Why for feed and not for human consumption? The black soldier fly larvae

With the surge in consumption of insects, the search continues to find ways to increase the popularity of insect‐based products in the Western world. The black soldier fly larvae (BSFL), which is mainly utilized for animal feed, has great potential to provide a sustainable source of nutrients for human food. This review aims to discuss some of the key benefits and challenges of BSFL and their potential role as a food ingredient and/or product for human consumption. Few articles specifically discuss BSFL as a food source, therefore a comprehensive literature search strategy consisted of collecting and evaluating published data about BSFL as animal feed that could be relevant to its use in food. The hurdles that need to be overcome in order to introduce BSFL as a viable food option include safety concerns, technofunctional properties, nutritional aspects, consumer attitudes, and product applications for BSFL.

Probabilistic modelling: theory and practice

Probabilistic modelling techniques allow much more realistic estimates of exposure and risk by computing the use of the full range of potential exposures rather than single 'worst case' exposures. However, these techniques require additional considerations regarding the appropriate data and models. This article reviews the theoretical aspects of probabilistic modelling and also considers some of the practical applications. The most common method, called Monte Carlo analysis, is discussed in some detail. The practical application of Monte Carlo to risk assessments is presented along with an evaluation of the input parameters. Topics also discussed include considerations of the requirements for precision and procedures for validation of assessments.

Coir Fiber–Process and Opportunities

Abstract

Growing environmental awareness throughout the world has triggered a paradigm shift towards designing materials compatible with the environment. Coira lignocelluosic natural fiberhas emerging importance as an engineering material due to its high tensile strength and elongation properties. The advantages of natural lignocellulosic fibers include acceptable specific strength properties, low cost, low density and biodegradability. This work is intended to present an overview of the main results presented in literature on this topic, focusing the attention on the fiber properties in terms of physical and chemical structure. Some aspects related to the traditional uses of coir fibers are also presented. Coir, as an ecofriendly fiber, has tremendous potential in India as well as the rest of the World for mattresses, fabric and other novel applications. Research and development efforts have been underway to find new use areas for coir.

The use of stable isotopes for food web analysis

General aspects in isotope biogeochemistry was summarized with emphasis on delta 15N and delta 13C contents in plants and animals in natural ecosystems. In the estuary, the variation of isotope ratios were principally governed by the mixing of land-derived organic matter, marine phytoplankton, and seagrasses. A clear cut linear relationship between animal delta 15N and its trophic level was obtained in the Antarctic food chain system. Several current efforts to use the stable isotopes for food web analysis were demonstrated for some terrestrial and marine systems as well as human food web.
