A Communication Support System for Older People with Dementia

CIRCA lets those with short-term memory loss draw on reminiscences to converse with relatives and caregivers. The system, which software engineers, psychologists,and designers developed with caregiver input, features a touch screen that displays photos, music, video, text, and other materials to help those with dementia access long-term memory. This paper presents a communication support system for older people with dementia.     

Marginalised Care: Migrant Workers Caring for Older People in Ireland

Older adult care in Ireland is a mix of public, private, voluntary and family provision. This model is characterised by deficient funding and support structures for both care recipients and carers, leading ultimately to fragmented service delivery, both in the community and in residential care. Against this backdrop, there has been a significant and rapid growth in the number of migrant registered nurses and care assistants providing care to Irish older people. With two potentially marginalised groups now at the centre of the caring relationship, questions arise regarding the sustainability of quality of care and quality of life for both providers and recipients of care. This research study draws on the perspectives of the older person, the migrant carer and the employer to develop an understanding of migrant worker care provision within the disadvantaged ageing sector in Ireland. The paper will frame migrant care workers’ experiences within the perspective of a marginalised sector, whose central consumers, older people, are not prioritised in policy or practice. Providing evidence of disadvantage for older adults and migrant carers, the research findings demonstrate that it is necessary to improve caring experiences and conditions for both groups if quality of care is to be enhanced.

The Use of Software Science in Evaluating Modularity Concepts

An investigation is made into the extent to which relationships from software science are useful in analyzing programming methodology principles that are concerned with modularity. Using previously published data from over 500 programs, it is shown that the software science effort measure provides quantitative answers to questions concerning the conditions under which modularization is beneficial. Among the issues discussed are the reduction of similar code sequences by temporary variable and subprogram defmition, and the use of global variables. Using data flow analysis, environmental considerations which affect the applicability of alternative modularity techniques are also discussed.     

Institutional Care for Older People in Developing Countries: The Case of Buenos Aires, Argentina

This paper examines the quality of care provided by old age homes in developing countries. It draws attention to the growing demand for such services and the emergence of a largely unregulated private sector. The paper reviews the findings of a survey of 101 private old age homes conducted in Buenos Aires, Argentina during 2004 and 2005. This reveals that the quality of care leaves much to be desired, and that the rights, autonomy and dignity of older people are often neglected. Particular issues of concern are the repressive managerial structures (including the use of restraints and medication), questionable processes of admission, and limited support for dependent residents. The paper calls for long-term care to be given a higher policy profile in developing countries than is currently the case.     

Evaluating the Need for Network Design Software

A burgeoning assortment of software tools is being developed to help telecommunications network designers and analysts create more dynamic and flexible networks that better suit corporate communications needs. However, these tools are only as effective as the craftsman who wields them; they cannot replace a designer's skills or compensate for the lack of them.     

Expanding the Criteria for Evaluating Socio-Technical Software

This paper compares two evaluation criterion frameworks for sociotechnical software. Research on the technology acceptance model (TAM) confirms that perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use are relevant criteria for users evaluating organizational software. However, information technology has changed considerably since TAM's 1989 inception, so an upgraded evaluation framework may apply. The web of system performance (WOSP) model suggests eight evaluation criteria, based on a systems theory definition of performance. This paper compares WOSP and TAM criterion frameworks in a performance evaluation experiment using the analytic hierarchy process method. Subjects who used both TAM and WOSP criteria preferred the WOSP criteria, were more satisfied with its decision outcomes, and found the WOSP evaluation more accurate and complete. As sociotechnical software becomes more complex, users may need (or prefer) more comprehensive evaluation criterion frameworks.

Social Roles in an Online Support Community for Older People

In this article, an online support community for older people is studied, with the aim of developing a taxonomy of social roles based on content analysis and social network analysis. Four hundred messages (posted between August 9, 2007, and February 5, 2008) in an online support community for older people (http://www.seniornet.org) were investigated. The data were analyzed to identify and shed light on patterns of the online functional behavior as well as the social structure of active members. Drawing on the findings, a set of six social roles were identified, defined, and described in depth. The findings showed that the structural positions of online community members were associated with the kind of content these members tended to post. For example, it was found that central members were very likely to give support, whereas members not very well connected were more inclined to post self-disclosing messages.     

Delineation of House Design Guidelines for Fall Prevention of Older People

As the average life span becomes longer due to the development of medical technology and improving living conditions, interest in the quality of life in old age is on the increase. Health is central to a better quality of life, but the increasing healthcare costs incurred by older people are expected to become a heavy burden on society. Falls are the main external cause of unintentional injury among older people and are also responsible for a large proportion of healthcare costs. They occur frequently in the home and this has necessitated the improvement of the home environment in relation to fall prevention. Although there have been a considerable amount of studies concerning design features and guidelines, not enough research about the relationship between fall risks and the home environment has been conducted. In this context, the purpose of this study is to delineate house design guidelines for fall prevention in a comprehensive and systematic way. The main method of this study is a content analysis technique, and thirteen sources related to the environmental design for fall prevention and universal design were analysed through the content analysis. As a result, a total of 220 guidelines for fall prevention were identified and systematically arranged according to fall risk factors. These guidelines will help older people better perceive the danger of falls and will promote the improvement of housing conditions based on fall risk factors.
