This paper proposes a new approach for the segmentation of both near-end and far-end intima-media regions of the common carotid artery in ultrasound images. The method requires minimal user interaction and is able to segment the near-end wall in arteries with large, hypoechogenic and irregular plaques, issues usually not considered previously due to the increased segmentation difficulty.  相似文献

A new algorithm is proposed for the semi-automatic segmentation of the near-end and the far-end adventitia boundary of the common carotid artery in ultrasound images. It uses the random sample consensus method to estimate the most significant cubic splines fitting the edge map of a longitudinal section. The consensus of the geometric model (a spline) is evaluated through a new gain function, which integrates the responses to different discriminating features of the carotid boundary: the proximity of the geometric model to any edge or to valley shaped edges; the consistency between the orientation of the normal to the geometric model and the intensity gradient; and the distance to a rough estimate of the lumen boundary.A set of 50 longitudinal B-mode images of the common carotid and their manual segmentations performed by two medical experts were used to assess the performance of the method. The image set was taken from 25 different subjects, most of them having plaques of different classes (class II to class IV), sizes and shapes.The quantitative evaluation showed promising results, having detection errors similar to the ones observed in manual segmentations for 95% of the far-end boundaries and 73% of the near-end boundaries.  相似文献

A new approach is introduced for the automatic detection of the lumen axis of the common carotid artery in B-mode ultrasound images. The image is smoothed using a Gaussian filter and then a dynamic programming scheme extracts the dominant paths of local minima of the intensity and the dominant paths of local maxima of the gradient magnitude with the gradient pointing downwards. Since these paths are possible estimates of the lumen axis and the far wall of a blood vessel, respectively, they are grouped together into pairs. Then, a pattern of two features is computed from each pair of paths and used as input to a linear discriminant classifier in order to select the pair of paths that correspond to the common carotid artery. The estimated lumen axis is the path of local minima of the intensity that belongs to the selected pair of paths. The proposed method is suited to real time processing, no user interaction is required and the number of parameters is minimal and easy to determine.  相似文献

In this paper, a robust method is proposed for segmentation of medical images by exploiting the concept of information gain. Medical images contain inherent noise due to imaging equipment, operating environment and patient movement during image acquisition. A robust medical image segmentation technique is thus inevitable for accurate results in subsequent stages. The clustering technique proposed in this work updates fuzzy membership values and cluster centroids based on information gain computed from the local neighborhood of a pixel. The proposed approach is less sensitive to noise and produces homogeneous clustering. Experiments are performed on medical and non-medical images and results are compared with state of the art segmentation approaches. Analysis of visual and quantitative results verifies that the proposed approach outperforms other techniques both on noisy and noise free images. Furthermore, the proposed technique is used to segment a dataset of 300 real carotid artery ultrasound images. A decision system for plaque detection in the carotid artery is then proposed. Intima media thickness (IMT) is measured from the segmented images produced by the proposed approach. A feature vector based on IMT values is constructed for making decision about the presence of plaque in carotid artery using probabilistic neural network (PNN). The proposed decision system detects plaque in carotid artery images with high accuracy. Finally, effect of the proposed segmentation technique has also been investigated on classification of carotid artery ultrasound images.  相似文献

In ultrasound images, tissues are characterized by their speckle texture. Moment-based techniques have proven their ability to capture texture features. However, in ultrasound images, the speckle size increases with the distance from the probe and in some cases the speckle has a concentric texture arrangement. We propose to use moment invariants with respect to image scale and rotation to capture the texture in such cases. Results on synthetic data show that moment invariants are able to characterize the texture but also that some moment orders are sensitive to regions and, moreover, some are sensitive to the boundaries between two different textures. This behavior seems to be very interesting to be used within some segmentation scheme dealing with a combination of regional and boundary information. In this paper we will try to prove the usability of this complementary information in a min-cut/max-flow graph cut scheme.  相似文献

A novel algorithm is proposed for the segmentation of the lumen and bifurcation boundaries of the carotid artery in B-mode ultrasound images. It uses the image contrast characteristics of the lumen and bifurcation of the carotid artery in relation to other tissues and structures for their identification. The relevant ultrasound data regarding the artery presented in the input image is identified using morphologic operators and processed by an anisotropic diffusion filter for speckle noise removal. The information obtained is then used to define two initial contours, one corresponding to the lumen and the other one regarding the bifurcation boundaries, for the application of the Chan-Vese level set segmentation model. A set of longitudinal ultrasound B-mode grayscale images of the common carotid artery was acquired using a GE Healthcare Vivid-e ultrasound system. The results reveal that the new algorithm is effective and robust, and that its main advantage relies on the automatic identification of the carotid lumen, which overcomes the known limitations of the traditional algorithms.  相似文献

The computer algorithms for the delineation of anatomical structures and other regions of interest on the medical imagery are important component in assisting and automating specific radiological tasks. In addition, the segmentation of region is an important first step for variety image related application and visualization tasks. In this paper, we propose a fast and automated connectivity-based local adaptive thresholding (CLAT) algorithm to segment the carotid artery in sequence medical imagery. This algorithm provides the new feature that is the circumscribed quadrangle on the segmented carotid artery for region-of-interest (ROI) determination. By using the preserved connectivity between consecutive slice images, the size of the ROI is adjusted like a moving window according to the segmentation result of previous slice image. The histogram is prepared for each ROI and then smoothed by local averaging for the threshold selection. The threshold value for carotid artery segmentation is locally selected on each slice image and is adaptively determined through the sequence image. In terms of automated features and computing time, this algorithm is more effective than region growing and deformable model approaches. This algorithm is also applicable to segment the cylinder shape structures and tree-like blood vessels such as renal artery and coronary artery in the medical imagery. Experiments have been conducted on synthesized images, phantom and clinical data sets with various Gaussian noise.  相似文献

People are interested in the composition of honeybee pollen due to its nutritional value and therapeutic benefits. Its palynological composition depends on the local flora surrounding the beehive, and its identification is currently done manually using optical microscopy. This procedure is tedious and expensive in systematic application and is unable to automatically separate pollen loads of different species of plants. We present an automatic methodology to discriminate pollen loads based on texture image classification. Texture features are generated using a multiscale filtering scheme. When the maximum likelihood approach (ML) is used during the calculation of the Discrete Hidden Markov Model (DHMM) parameters, DHMM parameters of the each class are only calculated using the training samples (positive training samples) of the same class. The training samples (negative training samples) not belonging to that class are not used in the calculation of DHMM model parameters. With the aim of supplying that deficiency, by involving the training samples of all classes in calculating processes, a Rocchio algorithm based approach is suggested. During the calculation period, in order to determine the most appropriate values of parameters for adjusting the relative effect of the positive and negative training samples, a Genetic algorithm is used as an optimization technique. The purposed method is used to classify the internal carotid artery Doppler signals recorded from 136 patients as well as of 55 healthy people. Our proposed method reached 97.38% classification accuracy with fivefold cross-validation (CV) technique. The classification results showed that the proposed method was effective for the classification of internal carotid artery Doppler signals.  相似文献

为实现卫星云图上台风的自动识别,提出了一种基于纹理方向整体分布特征的台风云系图象自动识别方法,通过引入矢量矩的概念来表现图象纹理整体分布规律,该识别方法采用全局搜索方式,将一窗口在整幅图象上滑动,首先计算出窗口图象内各点的纹理方向,进而得出窗口图像的矢量矩,将矢量矩与阈值比较来判整幅图象是否为台风云系图像,实验结果表明,该方法能够识别不同类型和不同发展阶段的台风云系图象,能够很好地将台风云系与其他干扰云系区分开,具有较广泛的适应性和较高的识别率。  相似文献

Fingerprint imaging using ultrasound has been investigated for several years and has shown to be a valid alternative to optical scanners. Capacitive micro-machined ultrasound transducers (cMUT) is an emerging MEMS technology that can be profitably exploited in biometric applications, like fingerprint or palm print.In this work a FEM model of a cMUT is proposed and used to design a 192-element array with a frequency band centered at 12.5 MHz. A cMUT array was manufactured by means of a proprietary fabrication process and an ultrasound probe was assembled and experimentally characterized. Comparison between simulation and experimental results has shown a quite good agreement. The cMUT probe was operated at a frequency of 12 MHz and used to produce images of fingerprints, the quality of which was quite satisfactory.  相似文献

The optimisation of image processing steps such as segmentation and feature extraction individually in an application does not yield an optimal pipeline. In this paper we demonstrate how the use of different image segmentation algorithms directly impacts upon the quality of texture measures extracted from segmented regions and final classification ability. The difference between the best and the worst possible performances by choosing different algorithms is found to be significant. We then develop the methodology for determining the optimal pipeline for scene analysis and show our experimental results on the publicly available benchmark “MINERVA”.  相似文献

This paper presents neural network-based dimension reduction of texture features in content-based image retrieval. In particular, we highlight the usefulness of hetero-associative neural networks to this task, and also propose a scheme to combine the hetero-associative and auto-associative functions. A multichannel Gabor-filtering approach is used to derive 30-dimensional texture features from a set of homogeneous texture images. Multi-layer feedforward neural networks are then trained to reduce the number of feature dimensions. Our results show that the methods lead to a reduction of up to 30% while keeping or even improving the performance of similarity ranking. This has the benefit of alleviating the ill-effects of the high dimensionality of features in current image indexing methods and resulting in significant speeding up retrieval rates. This paper presents a method for classification of liver ultrasound images based on texture analysis. The proposed method uses a set of seven texture features having high discriminative power which can be used by radiologists to classify the liver. Feature extraction is carried out using the following texture models: Spatial Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix, Gray Level Difference Statistics, First order Statistics, Fourier Power Spectrum, Statistical Feature Matrix, Law’s Texture Energy Measures and Fractal Features. Based upon the results of Linear Discriminative Analysis (LDA) followed by box-plot analysis and Pearson’s correlation coefficient, 7 best features from a set of 35 features are selected. These selected features are then fused using a linear classifier. The novelty of the proposed method is that, it combines the best features from different texture domains along with their weights and ‘weighted z-score’ values. Subsequently, these values are used to compute a discriminative index for liver classification. The results show that this method has overall classification accuracy of 95% and low computational complexity.  相似文献

A software has been developed that is aimed at quantitative analysis of images acquired by isoelectric focusing and double blotting procedures used for recombinant erythropoietin doping control. It represents a unified and easy-to-use tool for Epo doping experts in WADA accredited laboratories. It is based on image segmentation philosophy that enables identification of individual bands whose characteristics are needed for evaluation of the Epo doping positivity criteria. Several modules implemented in the GASepo software include an original know how, in particular, the method of robust calculation of the cut-off line, band segmentation and classification algorithms. In this study, different controllers for control of fractional-order coronary artery system in the presence of external disturbance are designed. Using sliding mode, the proposed type 1 and type 2 fuzzy methods, the suitable controllers are proposed. In sliding mode control, a fractional sliding surface is presented and the control signal is modified to prevent chattering in the control system. With mathematical analysis, a type of membership function is suggested which has better performance in the fractional order system. Also, a rule-base is presented which leads to better results in type 1 and type 2 fuzzy controllers. The risk of the proposed controllers in different conditions is analyzed. Finally, according to the other analyzing methods, it is shown that this analyzing method has more accurate results.  相似文献

ContextIn software project management, the distribution of resources to various project activities is one of the most challenging problems since it affects team productivity, product quality and project constraints related to budget and scheduling.ObjectiveThe study aims to (a) reveal the high complexity of modelling the effort usage proportion in different phases as well as the divergence from various rules-of-thumb in related literature, and (b) present a systematic data analysis framework, able to offer better interpretations and visualisation of the effort distributed in specific phases.MethodThe basis for the proposed multivariate statistical framework is Compositional Data Analysis, a methodology appropriate for proportions, along with other methods like the deviation from rules-of-thumb, the cluster analysis and the analysis of variance. The effort allocations to phases, as reported in around 1500 software projects of the ISBSG R11 repository, were transformed to vectors of proportions of the total effort and were analysed with respect to prime project attributes.ResultsThe proposed statistical framework was able to detect high dispersion among data, distribution inequality and various interesting correlations and trends, groupings and outliers, especially with respect to other categorical and continuous project attributes. Only a very small number of projects were found close to the rules-of-thumb from the related literature. Significant differences in the proportion of effort spent in different phrases for different types of projects were found.ConclusionThere is no simple model for the effort allocated to phases of software projects. The data from previous projects can provide valuable information regarding the distribution of the effort for various types of projects, through analysis with multivariate statistical methodologies. The proposed statistical framework is generic and can be easily applied in a similar sense to any dataset containing effort allocation to phases.  相似文献

This paper describes a portable software tool used for the processing and maintenance of data flow diagrams which form the basis of structured analysis techniques. The tool itself is based on the idea that data flow diagrams can be modelled by means of semantic nets and can be manipulated by a semantic net processor.
