A butanol-type ultrafine condensation particle counter (UCPC, Model 3776, TSI, Inc., Shoreview, MN, USA), which can achieve a 50% detection efficiency diameter (d50) of 2.5 nm using a capillary-sheath structure, was modified and tested in the laboratory for airborne measurements. The aerosol flow rate through the capillary is a key factor affecting the quantification of aerosol particle number concentrations. A pressure-dependent correction factor for the aerosol flow rate was determined using a newly added mass flow meter for the sheath flow and the external calibration system. The effect of particle coincidence in the optical sensing volume was evaluated using an aerosol electrometer (AE, Model 3068B, TSI, Inc.) as a reference. An additional correction factor for the coincidence effect was derived to improve the quantification accuracy at higher concentrations. The particle detection efficiency relative to the AE was measured for mobility diameters of 3.1–50 nm and inlet absolute pressures of 101–40 kPa. The pressure dependence of the d50 value, asymptotic detection efficiency, and shape of the particle detection efficiency curve is discussed, along with simple theoretical calculations for the diffusion loss of particles and the butanol saturation ratio in the condenser.

Critical heat flux (CHF) tests were performed to evaluate the effect of dissolved, nonreactive contaminants on low-pressure industrial boilers. These tests were conducted on a 2.38-inch (60.5 mm) I.D. vertical smooth bore tube with nonuniform circumferential heating at pressures between 100 and 500 psia (0.69 and 3.45 MPa). Tests were performed under two water chemistry conditions: clean (less than 1.6 ppm total dissolved solids) and contaminated (greater than 2000 ppm TDS). With all other operating parameters held constant, the following effects of contamination on the steam quality (X) at CHF were determined at the pressures indicated:

At 100 psia (0.69 MPa) Xclean < Xcont

At 300 psia (2.1 MPa) Xclean?Xcont

At 500 psia (3.5 MPa) Xclean > Xcont

The effect of contamination on CHF was found to be a function of pressure, initial contaminant concentration, and the relative steam quality at which CHF conditions occur. These results are compared to data available in the open literature where Xclean is always greater than Xcont. A method for correlating these data is also illustrated.  相似文献

The critical conditions under which flow curves in capillary flow abruptly change their slope to zero (spurt) and the influence of solvent additive and solvent power on this phenomenon have been investigated. Based on a forced high elastic state concept an expression for the so-called spurt phenomenon, i.e. fracture-induced slip at the wall in a capillary of a capillary rheometer, is deduced. It is found that the spurt fracture stress, τs cr, and the spurt fracture shear rate, γs cr, can be represented by the master curve log (τ s crr ((p/Mc)PE(Mc/p))2/3 against log (aT γs cr), where aT is the WLF shift factor, Mc the molecular weight between entanglements and p the density.

Estimation of slip rates at the wall and measurements on slightly crosslinked high density polyethylene supports the assumption that spurt results from melt fracture at the capillary wall.

Only addition of the non-solvent calcium stearate (with high density polyethylene) results in flow behavior which significantly deviates from that found for samples containing good solvents. Gel permeation chromato-graphy indicates that if chain scission resulting in lower molecular weight takes place, it will be limited to thin layers near the capillary wall.

melt fracture in the capillary cannot be reached. The flow behavior is influenced by addition of the non-solvent calcium stearate. The slopes of the flow curves is changed at relatively low shear rates but the high molecular weight polymer DMDS 5140 never the less shows spurt behavior at the same stress as for the pure sample.

This behavior may tentatively be interpreted as being caused by the formation of a boundary layer of non-solvent at low shear rate the thickness of which depends on the polymer and flow field. At stresses corresponding to the critical conditions, fracture in the polymer takes place. The interface between the non-solvent layer and the polymer matrix must according to Han61 be expected to be unstable  相似文献

An existing differential mobility analyzer (DMA) of cylindrical electrodes and a novel DMA of rectangular plate electrodes are demonstrated for size fractionation of nanoparticles at high-aerosol flow rates in this work. The two DMAs are capable of delivering monodisperse size selected nanoparticles (SMPS σg < 1.1) at gas flow rates ranging from 200 slm to 500 slm. At an aerosol flow rate of 200 slm, the maximum attainable particle mean size is of about 20 nm for the cylindrical DMA and of nearly 50 nm for the rectangular plate DMA. The number concentration of the monodisperse nanoparticles delivered by the high-flow DMAs spans from 104 cm?3 to 106 cm?3 depending upon the particle mean size and particle size dispersion.

The field of performance plastics is showing remarkable vitality and growth, even though the participants find the price to be high in terms of technical and sales support required, together with high capital investment for plants.

There has been a high degree of proliferation of new products in the form of new polymers, new grades of existing polymers, as well as filled, reinforced, alloyed versions. While this does introduce new degrees of freedom in material selection, it is a source of significant confusion for the design engineers who have to cope with selecting the preferred material from among the many that are available. The choices and data bases are becoming confusing.

Various forms of relatively exotic, aromatic-monomer chemistry are being applied, but the emphasis appears to be on new amorphous polymers.

High-performance requirements exist in virtually all segments of the plastics field; the major end uses are in aerospace, automotive, business machines, electrical/electronics, food packaging, and medical applications.

Foreign presence has strongly increased as European companies have increased imports or have purchased established product lines or business units.

There will be continued pressure on the performance plastics from the lower priced materials which are countering with upgraded, modified, alloyed versions of their own. There is also increased competition between thermoplastics and thermosets as the result of material developments and process refinements.  相似文献

Six distillation column models have been used in studies of the usefulness of the Inverse Nyquist Array (INA) method for design of dual composition control for distillation. Five of the column models are experimental, one describing an industrial column, the others four pilot plants. One column model is obtained by modeling from first principles.

The control strategies investigated and compared are multiloop SISO, 2-way decoupling and l-way decoupling. The control variables are the standard ones, i.e. reflux flow and boilup.

In most of the cases INA has been found to be a useful tool for design of the loops and for comparison of the different control approaches. INA has also been found to be useful for simultaneous tuning of the decouplers and the feedback controllers.

For 2-way decoupling the criterion to minimize interaction at the critical frequency for each primary feedback loop has been found useful in most, but not all, cases. The scheme can be designed by pure gains in the decouplers and there is no reason to introduce dynamics into the decouplers—the systems studied are already sufficiently rich in dynamics.

INA has been found to be a suitable vehicle for the choice between the two possible l-way decoupling schemes.

With the design approach taken, l-way decoupling has been found to provide considerably better control quality than 2-way decoupling in two of the six systems, the differences in control quality being small in the other cases.

The effect of model mismatching on the results, caused e.g. by process nonlinearities, is discussed and simple rules to decrease the parameter sensitivity for 2-way decoupling schemes are given. When model mismatching is considered, the advantage of l-way decoupling over 2-way decoupling seems to increase.

One deficiency of the INA design as used in this paper is that it does not single out the design which is to be preferred on the grounds of robustness.  相似文献

We present analytical solutions to the steady state nucleation-condensation-coagulation equation of aerosols in the atmosphere. These solutions are appropriate under different limits but more general than previously derived analytical solutions. For example, we provide an analytic solution to the coagulation limit plus a condensation correction. Our solutions are then compared with numerical results. We show that the solutions can be used to estimate the sensitivity of the cloud condensation nuclei number density to the nucleation rate of small condensation nuclei and to changes in the formation rate of sulfuric acid.

Microbiological stability in water mains has become an increasing problem for waterworks where more and more surface water is used for distribution requirements. Even when surface water is treated, appropriately, it usually contains a higher amount of organic compounds than does groundwater, and during certain periods, can attain temperatures between 20 and 25°C. Furthermore, ozonization applied during treatment modifies structures of the dissolved organic materials.

Twenty bacterial strains capable of aftergrowth were isolated starting from ozonized surface water, from water of subterranean origin, and from a mixture of these two types of water. Six typical strains were used to determine the importance of the temperature factor on aftergrowth in five types of waters of different characteristics.

Three criteria for the evaluation of aftergrowth are: the growth rate factor (r2), the growth yield (maximum number of germs/mL when growth stops), and the latency time (in hours). The results, in triplicate, obtained from growth curves then were submitted to an analysis of variance by two cross classifications.

It was established that aftergrowth is related to the classical Pseudomonas and Azobacter families, but also to the species of Bacillus, Corynebacter, Micrococcus, Vibrionaceae, and even Enterobacter. Furthermore, it has been proven that the temperature factor is most important in all aspects, as an increase in water temperature enhances all growth characteristics: shortening of the lag-phase; increase in growth-rate factor; and yield.

Under practical conditions, the significant growth delay is very important. With Pseudomonas putida, the lag-phase is on the order of three days at +7.5°C and 10 hours at +17°C.  相似文献

Objectives: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of different desensitizers’ application on the microleakage of previously restored Class V composite resin restorations.

Materials and methods: Class V cavities were prepared on the buccal surfaces of 40 extracted human third molars. Forty box-shaped cavities were divided into four groups, based on the desensitizers used (n = 10). All teeth were restored with the same bonding agent and composite material. No desensitizer was applied in the control group. In the experimental groups, BisBlock, Gluma and Universal bonding agents were the desensitizers. The desensitizers were applied after completion of composite restorations according to manufacturers’ instructions. All specimens were then thermocycled at 5–55 °C, with a 10-s dwell time for 500 cycles. The samples were then immersed in 0.5% methylene blue dye for 24 h, sectioned into two equal halves, evaluated for microleakage using a stereomicroscope at 30× magnification and scored on a scale of 0–3. The data were analysed using the Kruskal–Wallis test at the significance level p < 0.05.

Results: There were no significant differences in microleakage after desensitizer application (p > 0.05). However, based on the obtained numerical values in our study, while the BisBlock and bonding groups showed lower microleakage at the occlusal margin, BisBlock, Gluma and bonding group showed lower microleakage at the gingival margin compared to the control group.

Conclusions: The application of desensitizers as a post-treatment option could be considered an advisable procedure to minimize microleakage.  相似文献

During drinking-water treatment, ozone used as a preoxidant and chlorine required for final disinfection, lead to competing chemical reactions, in the case of raw water containing both organic compounds and inorganic salts (such as bromides and ammonia).

The study of the interactions between those reactants has been made according to the following main topics :

As for THM formation, experiments conducted on simple organic compounds or on natural fulvic acids show important decreases in THM or TCAA formation after ozonation. It may be noticed, however, that the ozonation of surface waters may induce the formation of haloform precursors, usually with a low level of reactivity.

In water supplies containing bromide ions, oxidation of the latter through hypobromous acid may take place during the ozonation stage. Failing preozonation treatment, hypobromous acid is generated very rapidly during chlorination, thus inducing the formation of chloro- brominated organic compounds.

During the ozonation of fulvic acid solutions, the presence of small amounts of bicarbonate was found to improve precursor removal significantly.

It can be concluded that the partial analogy of the action of ozone or chlorine on aromatic structures, whether simple or complex (such as humic and fulvic acids), seems to indicate that the consequence of preozonation is the destruction, at least in part, of the most reactive sites for THM production, thus leading to a decrease of the volatile organochlorinated compounds formed during the post-chlorination. However, some ozonation products of natural waters are THM precursors, though of low reactivity. Then, in the presence of bromide ions, the formation of volatile organobrominated compounds may be observed during ozonation.  相似文献

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are relatively well-known organic pollutants and due to their carcinogenic and mutagenic properties their presence in the environment still attracts a lot of attention.

According to literature reports and own research, PAHs presence in wastewaters is common. It was confirmed that PAHs are the components of municipal landfill leachate. Membrane techniques are one of the most interesting ways of removing PAHs from leachate.

The purpose of this article is to monitor PAHs concentration changes during the membrane (reverse osmosis - RO) leachate treatment processes. In the first stage of testing leachates were filtrated on the sand bed (pre-filtration). After the pre-filtration they were directed to the membrane module for the main filtration.

Sixteen PAHs listed by EPA were analyzed. The results with information on PAHs concentration in leachate samples were presented using HPLC with fluorescence detection (FLD). The changes in PAHs concentration were determined in leachate samples before and after pre-filtration as well as after RO. The decrease of PAHs concentration in the samples was observed after these processes. The total concentration of 16 PAHs in raw municipal landfill leachates amounted to 23.64–26.95 μg/L. The research confirmed the high efficiency in removal of PAHs while using a reverse osmosis (59–72%). Including the pre-filtration, the overall level of removed PAHs reached 81–86%. The average PAHs concentration after pre-filtration and RO was in the 4.46–4.99 μg/L range. The municipal landfill leachate with a high concentration of PAHs should be cleaned before it is discharged into the environment.  相似文献

A green and regioselective thiocyanation of aromatic and heteroaromatic compounds has been achieved via a simple protocol using cross-linked poly (4-vinylpyridine)-supported thiocyanate ion, [P4-VP]SCN, as a versatile polymeric reagent and potassium persulfate as a strong oxidizing agent, under heterogeneous conditions.

Various indoles, phenol and aniline derivatives, and pyrroles were transformed into their corresponding aryl thiocyanates in high to excellent yields. This procedure offers advantages such as short reaction time, simple reaction work-up, and the polymeric reagents can be regenerated and reused for several times without significant loss of their activity.  相似文献

Purpose: To investigate the effects of phosphoric acid esters (PAEs)-containing primers on the micro-tensile bond strengths (MTBS) of etched enamel, the micro-morphologies of the resin–enamel interfaces, and the enamel surfaces.

Materials and Methods: Thirty-three bovine incisors were used in this study. After the labial enamel surfaces were highly polished, they were etched, water sprayed, and air-dried. Afterward, the enamel surfaces were treated with or without (control) one of three PAEs-containing primers (40%MDP, Ivoclar Vivadent; Resulcin AquaPrime A + B, DMG; Xeno V, Dentsply), water sprayed, and air-dried. Subsequently, an adhesive Heliobond (Ivoclar Vivadent) was applied and resin composite (Core Build-up, Bisco) was placed incrementally. They were prepared into multiple beams of about 1 × 1 × 8 mm for MTBS tests. The enamel surfaces and resin–enamel interfaces were analyzed by SEM and TEM. The data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and LSD test.

Results: Using PAEs-containing primers could increase the enamel MTBS (p < 0.05). The primer MDP produced higher MTBS than the primer Resulcin AquaPrime A + B and Xeno V. The SEM findings revealed the primed enamel surfaces were covered with a thin or glue-like layer of monomer-calcium salts of PAEs and the residual enamel crystallites, and various micro-porosities were detected within the hybrid layers. The TEM findings revealed the hydroxyapatite crystallites were tightly covered by the adhesive, the adhesive mixed with resin composite, or sparse irregular enamel crystallites.

Conclusion: The application of PAEs-containing primers on the etched enamel substrate could significantly increase the immediate enamel bond strengths. However, this effect was dependent on the individual PAEs-containing primer used.  相似文献

Objective: To evaluate the influence of manual and mechanical mixing techniques as well as the effects of moisture on the push-out bond strength of ProRoot MTA (Dentsply Tulsa Dental, Tulsa, OK, USA) and Biodentine (Septodont, Saint Maur des Fosses, France) to radicular dentin.

Material and methods: Two hundred and forty dentin discs were assigned into three groups with respect to the moisture condition tested: (1) dry, (2) paper points, (3) wet. The discs were further divided into four subgroups according to the calcium silicate cements (CSCs) and mixing techniques used: (1) ProRoot MTA mixed manually, (2) ProRoot MTA mixed mechanically, (3) Biodentine mixed manually, and (4) Biodentine mixed mechanically. Bond strengths of the cements to root canal dentin were measured using a push-out test setup. The data were statistically analyzed using three-way ANOVA and Bonferroni post hoc test p = 0.05.

Results: The data indicated that the push-out bond strength values were significantly affected by CSCs, mixing techniques, and moisture conditions (p < 0.001). Dry conditions caused a significant decrease in bond strength values for both CSCs (p < 0.001). The mean bond strength of Biodentine was significantly higher than that of ProRoot MTA, regardless of the mixing techniques and moisture conditions (p < 0.001). Mechanical mixing favored bond strength values statistically compared to manual mixing (p < .001).

Conclusion: The mixing techniques and moisture conditions have an effect on the push-out bond strengths of ProRoot MTA and Biodentine. Dry samples and manual mixing of cements deteriorate the push-out bond strengths values.  相似文献

Cleanable dust filter media are typically used in huge baghouse filter apparatuses. Thereby, the regeneration by back-pulsing from the clean gas side is done by either time-controlled or pressure-controlled operation, whereas the latter is more common. Hence, the need for a detailed knowledge of the clogging and filtration mechanisms during long time operation of a pressure-controlled filter aging arises.

A mathematical model describing the pressure drop evolution during time-controlled filter aging has been developed. The core of the developed model is the concept of dust masses that distribute themselves on a specific particle deposition area inside and on the surface of the filter medium. By altering this particle deposition area, various clogging mechanisms, occurring during an aging procedure, are covered by the model.

In this work, the model was adapted and coefficient parameters adjusted for pressure-controlled filter regeneration operation. A multitude of pressure-controlled test runs were performed in a specially designed filtration apparatus. From these tests, process-specific parameters were regressed and used to model the respective pressure drop curves. These model pressure drop curves show good accordance both quantitatively and qualitatively to experimental data and give a detail view on different clogging mechanisms.  相似文献

Objectives: To investigate the effect of different self-etch adhesive systems application techniques: active or passive in a single or double layer on adhesive–dentin microshear bond strength.

Methods: Occlusal surfaces of 48 extracted human molars were ground to expose flat superficial dentin surfaces. Specimens were randomly divided into two main groups according to the tested self-etch adhesive system either: One-step self-etch (AdperTM easy-one) or two-step self-etch (AdperTM SE Plus). Each adhesive system was applied on the prepared dentin surfaces followed one of these techniques: (1) Passive application of a single layer, (2) Active application of single layer, (3) Passive application of double adhesive layer (with light curing in between), and (4) Active application of double adhesive layers. Resin composite was packed inside micro-tubes fixed on the bonded dentin surfaces and light cured for 40 s. All specimens were stored in artificial saliva either for 24 h or 3 months before testing. Microshear bond strength test was employed using a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min.

Results: AdperTM SE Plus showed higher significant microshear bond strength in compared with AdperTM easy-one. For both adhesive systems active application showed higher significant microshear bond strength to dentin than passive application. Double application of adhesive systems showed lower microshear bond strength than single application.

Conclusion: Active application of self-etch adhesives could improve the dentin microshear bond strength. Double application with curing in between the layers did not improve the bond strength to the tested adhesive.  相似文献

Two bromate surveys were made recently in order to evaluate the frequency of bromate appearance in drinking waters issued from waterworks including one or two ozonation steps. The First survey was carried out on 47 waterworks. Two sampling campaigns were analyzed in cool and warm seasons. The objective of the second survey was to follow, during 4 to 10 months, at 12 selected waterworks.

The aim of this paper is to present the data obtained and to try to model for some waterworks the bromate formation by means of some important parameters (Br, O3/DOC, T° and pH) of water to ozonate.

The main conclusion is that the bromate presence in distributed drinking waters is a reality for waterworks using ozonation steps, especially in warm period of the year. In the case of some waterworks, disinfection by sodium hypochlorite increased bromate levels in distributed water.

As shown by others on a laboratory-scale level, a multi-linear regression allows us the prediction of the bromate formation from some determining parameters, for some waterworks. However, the poor values of the linear regression lead us to have some doubts about its universal application in the real situation of an operating waterworks. A better evaluation of “C.t” will be required in the future in order to get a better prediction by the use of multi linear regression.  相似文献

Accurate refractive index values are required to determine the effects of aerosol particles on direct radiative forcing. Theoretical retrievals using extinction data alone or extinction plus absorption data have been simulated to determine the sensitivity of each retrieval. A range of aerosol types with a range of different refractive indices were considered. The simulations showed that the extinction-only retrieval was not able to accurately or precisely retrieve refractive index values, even for purely scattering compounds, but the addition of a simulated absorption measurement greatly improved the retrieval.
