Human–computer interaction requires modeling of the user. A user profile typically contains preferences, interests, characteristics, and interaction behavior. However, in its multimodal interaction with a smart environment the user displays characteristics that show how the user, not necessarily consciously, verbally and nonverbally provides the smart environment with useful input and feedback. Especially in ambient intelligence environments we encounter situations where the environment supports interaction between the environment, smart objects (e.g., mobile robots, smart furniture) and human participants in the environment. Therefore it is useful for the profile to contain a physical representation of the user obtained by multi-modal capturing techniques. We discuss the modeling and simulation of interacting participants in a virtual meeting room, we discuss how remote meeting participants can take part in meeting activities and they have some observations on translating research results to smart home environments. 相似文献

Due to the elevated consumption of resources, the high cost of the production of contents and the quality of service required
in audio/video streaming services, it is extremely important to optimize all the elements involved in the deployment of these
services. With this goal in mind, provider companies have developed their management and presentation tools. At the same time,
some specific tools for audio/video streaming analysis have appeared. Data are collected from servers and proxies by analyzing
their log files in order to generate different types of reports. In spite of their utility, there is a disconnection between
these types of tools. In this way, several important relationships between collected data are lost and the influence of other
important aspects such as the behaviour of the users and their relationship with the subject or the length of the contents
is not considered. This generates inaccurate analyses and the impossibility to improve the presentation, for example by generating
recommendations using the information gathered from the analysis tool. Fesoria is a system which combines both characteristics.
It is an analysis tool and, at the same time, a system to manage the whole audio/video service. Fesoria is able to process
the logs gathered from the streaming servers and proxies, and combine the extracted information with other types of data,
such as content metadata, content distribution networks architecture, user preferences, etc. All this information is analyzed
in order to generate reports on service performance, access evolution and users’ preferences, and thus to improve the presentation
of the services. The system has been used in real audio/video services since 2001 with satisfactory results.

The different aspects of sensors integration, and specifically that of a Mass Spectrometer (MS) with audio and video signals, are investigated for detecting and monitoring indoor fire events. The present study focuses on comparing the capabilities of a variety of chemical sensors, on answering technical challenges in regard to the integration of chemical, audio and video signals and on discussing integration issues for potential field applications. Controlled, small scale fire experiments were carried out in the laboratory. A commercial MS coupled with an in-house developed Pulsed Sampling System (PSS), was used for on-line sampling and near real-time monitoring of the evolved volatiles. The detection limit of PSS-MS was found to be 150 ppbv and its linearity was confirmed up to 10 ppmv using benzene gas standards. The profiles of ions with m/z 57, 78, 91 and 106, corresponding to indicative Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) of the fire event, were recorded and compared with the concentration profiles of CO2, CO, O2, NO and H/C (C3H8), acquired by the gas sensors of a commercial exhaust gas analyzer. Audio and video signals were recorded by a microphone and a visual camera, simultaneously, with PSS-MS data. Two types of fire experiments were performed in order to simulate field conditions: (a) direct fire monitoring, in case of unobstructed direct fire view and (b) indirect fire monitoring through reflection of audio and video signals on metallic surfaces, for simulating obstacles preventing direct fire view. The information derived by audio and video signals reaffirmed the chemical detection inferences for both types of fire experiments, thus increasing the credibility of each individual method. Occasionally, video, audio and chemical information were complementary, thus counterbalancing the detection limitations of the individual methods. The integrated approach of combining MS data with audio and video signals appears to be a promising method in safety and security applications, where reliable, early detection and real-time monitoring is necessary. 相似文献

To what extent a blended learning configuration of face-to-face lectures, online on-demand video recordings of the face-to-face lectures and the offering of online quizzes with appropriate feedback has an additional positive impact on the performance of these students compared to the traditional face-to-face course approach? In a between-subjects design in which students were randomly assigned to a group having access to the online lectures including multiple choice quizzes and appropriate feedback or to a group having access to the online lectures only, 474 students (161 men and 313 women) of a course on European Law agreed to participate in the experiment. By using regression analysis we found that the course grade of the students was predicted by their grade point average, their study discipline, their grade goal for the course, the expected difficulty-level of the course, the number of online lectures they viewed, the number of lectures the students attended in person and the interaction between the lectures they viewed online and attended in person. Students who attended few lectures had more benefit from viewing online lectures than students who attended many lectures. In contrast to our expectations, the regression analysis did not show a significant effect of automated feedback on student performance. Offering recordings of face-to-face lectures is an easy extension of a traditional course and is of practical importance, because it enables students who are often absent from the regular face-to-face lectures to be able to improve their course grade by viewing the lectures online. 相似文献

In the last ten years, libraries, individual departments, and professors have experimented with screen-capture software to develop edited tutorials, record in-class lectures via presentation software, and record think-aloud rationale for difficult problem sets. Moreover, screen-capture software has been used to provide visual/audio feedback for student writing. Currently, there is scant research on visual/audio feedback via screen-capture software in writing courses. The present study examines student perceptions and attitudes about two different modes and media of teacher feedback: Microsoft Word comments versus visual/audio commentary. The results indicate that the mode and medium of teacher feedback had an impact on students’ perceptions about the rhetorical context of the revision process and perceptions about the teacher/student relationship. Students who preferred the visual/audio modality of the teacher commentary videos cited their conversational quality, clarification of expectations, and reference to more global issues in writing. On the other hand, students who preferred the Microsoft Word comments were more apt to discuss its indexical quality in that students could easily revise surface level features or locate the “problem” sentence. The results also indicate that an either/or approach to teacher feedback is not necessary. Students articulated the relevance of using a combination approach in which Microsoft Word comments and the teacher commentary videos could be used for different elements or stages of the writing process. As instructors transition to teaching within online contexts and experiment with new technologies, it is important to examine the significance of the mode and medium of teacher feedback in student perceptions, participation, and writing practices. 相似文献

ContextFinite State Machine (FSM) inference from execution traces has received a lot of attention over the past few years. Various approaches have been explored, each holding different properties for the resulting models, but the lack of standard benchmarks limits the ability of comparing the proposed techniques. Evaluation is usually performed on a few case studies, which is useful for assessing the feasibility of the algorithm on particular cases, but fails to demonstrate effectiveness in a broad context. Consequently, understanding the strengths and weaknesses of inference techniques remains a challenging task.ObjectiveThis paper proposes CARE, a general, approach-independent, platform for the intensive evaluation of FSM inference techniques.MethodGrounded in a program specification scheme that provides a good control on the expected program structures, it allows the production of large benchmarks with well identified properties.ResultsThe CARE platform demonstrates the following features: (1) providing a benchmarking mechanism for FSM inference techniques, (2) allowing analysis of existing techniques w.r.t. a class of programs and/or behaviors, and (3) helping users in choosing the best suited approach for their objective. Moreover, our extensive experiments on different FSM inference techniques highlight that they do not behave in the same manner on every class of program. Characterizing different classes of programs thus helps understanding the strengths and weaknesses of the studied techniques.ConclusionExperiments reported in this paper show examples of use cases that demonstrate the ability of the platform to generate large and diverse sets of programs, which allows to carry out meaningful inference techniques analysis. The analysis strategies the CARE platform offers open new opportunities for program behavior learning, particularly in conjunction with model checking techniques. Scalable video coding has become a key technology to deploy systems where the adaptation of content to diverse constrained
usage environments (such as PDAs, mobile phones and networks) is carried out in a simple and efficient way. Content-based
adaptation and summarization are fields that aim for providing improved adaptation to the user, trying to optimize the semantic
coverage in the adapted/summarized version. This paper proposes the integration of content analysis with scalable video adaptation
paradigm. They must be fitted in such a way that the efficiency of scalable adaptation is not damaged. An integrated framework
is proposed for semantic video adaptation, as well as an adaptive skimming scheme that can use the results of semantic analysis.
They are described using the MPEG-21 DIA tools to provide the adaptation in a standard framework. Particularly, the case of
activity analysis is described to illustrate the integration of semantic analysis in the framework, and its use for online
content summarization and adaptation. Overall efficiency is achieved by means of computing activity using compressed domain
analysis with several metrics evaluated as measures of activity.

This paper presents a specializer and a binding-time analyzer for a functional language where expressions are allowed to be
used as both static and dynamic. With both static and dynamic expressions, data structures can be statically accessed while
they are residualized at the same time. Previously, such data structures were treated as completely dynamic, which prevented
their components from being accessed statically. The technique presented in this paper effectively allows data structures
to be lifted which was prohibited in the conventional partial evaluators. The binding-time analysis is formalized as a type
system and the solution is obtained by solving constraints generated by the type system. We prove the correctness of the constraint
solving algorithm and show that the algorithm runs efficiently in almost linear time.

This paper describes a network-based video capture and processing peripheral, called the Vidboard, for a distributed multimedia system centered around a 1-Gbit/s asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network. The Vidboard is capable of generating full-motion video streams having a range of presentation (picture size, color space, etc.) and network (traffic, transport, etc.) characteristics. The board is also capable of decoupling video from the real-time constraints of the television world, which allows easier integration of video into the software environment of computer systems. A suite of ATM-based protocols has been developed for transmitting video from the Vidboard to a workstation, and a series of experiments are presented in which video is transmitted to a workstation for display. 相似文献
