Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were used to prepare natural rubber (NR) nanocomposites. Our first efforts to achieve nanostructures in MWNTs/NR nanocomposites were formed by incorporating carbon nanotubes in a polymer solution and subsequently evaporating the solvent. Using this technique, nanotubes can be dispersed homogeneously in the NR matrix in an attempt to increase the mechanical properties of these nanocomposites. The properties of the nanocomposites such as tensile strength, tensile modulus, elongation at break and hardness were studied. Mechanical test results show an increase in the initial modulus for up to 12 times in relation to pure NR. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were used to prepare natural rubber (NR) nanocomposites. Our first effort to achieve nanostructures in MWNTs/NR nanocomposites were formed by incorporating carbonnanotubes in a polymer solution and subsequently evaporating the solvent. Using this technique, nanotubess can be dispersed homogeneously in the NR matrix in an attempt to increase the mechanical properties of these nanocomposites. The properties of the nanocomposites such as tensile strength, tensile modulus, tear strength, elongation at break and hardness were studied. Mechanical test results show an increase in the initial modulus for up to 12 times in relation to pure NR. In addition to mechanical testing, the dispersion state of the MWNTs into NR was studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in order to understand the morphology of the resulting system. According to the present study, application of the physical and mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes to NR can result in rubber products which have improved mechanical, physical and chemical properties, compared with existing rubber products reinforced with carbon black or silicone.  相似文献

Functionalized multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) with carboxylic acid group (–COOH) have been utilized for the preparation of epoxy nanocomposites. Composites were synthesized using three different wt% (0.5, 0.75 and 1) of MWNTs via the solution mixing technique followed by ultrasonication. Mechanical and thermo-mechanical properties of the fabricated composites have been experimented for the suitability of this material in a variety of structural applications. The flexural modulus, strength, hardness, impact strength and storage modulus increased upon increasing MWNTs contents. Best results have been observed in nanocomposites with 0.75 wt% nanotubes loading, which showed 101, 166 and 61% enhancement in the flexural modulus, hardness and storage modulus, respectively, compared to neat epoxy. Achievement of uniform dispersion and hence formation of improved interface between nanotubes and epoxy was the reason behind the maximum enhancement at this wt%, which is further evidenced by the fracture surface morphology obtained from microscopical investigations.  相似文献

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were discovered by Iijima in 1991 as the fourth form of carbon. Carbon nanotubes are the ultimate carbon fibres because of their high Young’s modulus of ≈ 1 TPa which is very useful for load transfer in nanocomposites. In the present work, CNT/Al nanocomposites were fabricated by the powder metallurgy technique and after extrusion of the nanocomposites bright field transmission electron microscopic (TEM) studies were carried out. From the TEM images so obtained, a novel method of ascertaining the Young’s modulus of multi-walled carbon nanotubes is worked out in the present paper which turns out to be 0·9 TPa which is consistent with the experimental results.  相似文献

Study was made of the effect of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and polymeric compatibilizer on thermal, mechanical, and tribological properties of high density polyethylene (HDPE). The composites were prepared by melt mixing in two steps. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were melt mixed with maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (PEgMA) as polymeric compatibilizer to produce a PEgMA-CNT masterbatch containing 20 wt% of CNTs. The masterbatch was then added to HDPE to prepare HDPE nanocomposites with CNT content of 2 or 6 wt%. The unmodified and modified (hydroxyl or amine groups) CNTs had similar effects on the properties of HDPE-PEgMA indicating that only non-covalent interactions were achieved between CNTs and matrix. According to SEM studies, single nanotubes and CNT agglomerates (size up to 1 μm) were present in all nanocomposites regardless of content or modification of CNTs. Addition of CNTs to HDPE-PEgMA increased decomposition temperature, but only slight changes were observed in crystallization temperature, crystallinity, melting temperature, and coefficient of linear thermal expansion (CLTE). Young’s modulus and tensile strength of matrix clearly increased, while elongation at break decreased. Measured values of Young’s moduli of HDPE-PEgMA-CNT composites were between the values of Young’s moduli for longitudinal (E11) and transverse (E22) direction predicted by Mori-Tanaka and Halpin-Tsai composite theories. Addition of CNTs to HDPE-PEgMA did not change the tribological properties of the matrix. Because of its higher crystallinity, PEgMA possessed significantly different properties from HDPE matrix: better mechanical properties, lower friction and wear, and lower CLTE in normal direction. Interestingly, the mechanical and tribological properties and CLTEs of HDPE-PEgMA-CNT composites lie between those of PEgMA and HDPE.  相似文献

In this study, PMMA/CNTs composite materials with carboxyl-multi walled carbon nanotubes (c-MWNTs) or untreated MWNTs were prepared via in-situ bulk polymerization. The as-prepared PMMA/CNTs composite materials were then characterized by Fourier-Transformation infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The molecular weights of PMMA extracted from PMMA/CNTs composite materials and bulk PMMA were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) with THF used as the eluant. The PMMA/CNTs composite materials were used to produce foams by a batch process in an autoclave using nitrogen as foaming agent. The cellular microstructure, insulation and compressive mechanical properties of PMMA/CNTs composite foams were also investigated in detail. Compared to neat PMMA foam, the presence of CNTs increases in cell density and reduces cell size. The insulation and compressive mechanical properties of PMMA/CNTs composite foams were found to improve substantially those of neat PMMA foam. In particular, 22.6% decrease in thermal conductivity, 19.7% decrease in dielectric constant and 160% increase in compressive modulus were observed with the addition of 0.3 wt% carboxyl-multi walled carbon nanotubes (c-MWNTs).  相似文献

Non-covalently functionalized carbon nanotubes are more attractive for multifunction composites because they preserve nearly all the nanotubes’ intrinsic properties and enhance the electroconductivity of polymer composites. However, It is seldom reported that they make dramatic improvement in mechanical properties. In this paper we have successfully prepared a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanocomposite with a non-covalently functionalized carbon nanotube (DOC-MWNTs) using a simple method, which achieve a significant enhancement in mechanical properties. The tensile modulus and tensile yield strength of the PVA composite film containing 5 wt% DOC-MWNTs increased by 140% and 65%, respectively, comparing to the pure PVA film. FT-IR, TEM, SEM, and DSC were used to investigate the MWNTs and PVA/MWNTs nanocomposites. The results show that the separately dispersed DOC-MWNTs filler throughout the PVA matrix and the strong adhesion between the DOC-MWNTs filler and the PVA matrix are responsible for the significant reinforcement of the mechanical properties of the composite prepared.  相似文献

Carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy composites modified with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were fabricated and characterized. High-energy sonication was used to disperse CNTs in the resin, followed by infiltration of fiber preform with the resin/CNT mixture. The effects of sonication time on the mechanical properties of “multiscale” composites, which contain reinforcements at varying scales, were studied. A low CNT loading of 0.3 wt% in resin had little influence on tensile properties, while it improved the flexural modulus, strength, and percent strain to break by 11.6%, 18.0%, and 11.4%, respectively, as compared to the control carbon fiber/epoxy composite. While sonication is an effective method to disperse CNTs in a resin, duration, intensity, and temperature need to be controlled to prevent damages imposed on CNTs and premature resin curing. A combination of Halpin–Tsai equations and woven fiber micromechanics was used in hierarchy to predict the mechanical properties of multiscale composites, and the discrepancies between the predicted and experimental values are explained.

The functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) with amino groups were prepared after such steps as oxidation, the addition of carboxyalkyl radicals, acylation and amidation. Besides oxidated-MWNTs/epoxy nanocomposites, amino-functionalized MWNTs/epoxy nanocomposites, in which MWNTs with amino groups acted as a curing agent and covalently attached into the epoxy matrix, were fabricated. Subsequently, the effects of MWNT content on the mechanical and thermal properties for the two systems were investigated. It is found that both the tensile strength and impact strength enhance with the increase of MWNT addition, and the most significant improvement of the tensile strength (+51%) and especially impact strength (+93%) is obtained with amine-treated MWNTs at an 1.5 wt.% content. Moreover, the thermal stability of the nanocomposites also distinctly improves. The improvement of the properties of the amine-treated MWNTs system is more remarkable than those of o-MWNTs system. The reasons for these changes were discussed.  相似文献

Polypropylene (PP)/multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) nanocomposites were prepared by diluting a PP/MWNT masterbatch by melt compounding with a twin screw extruder and prepared nanocomposites were characterized for their rheological, mechanical and morphological properties in terms of MWNT loading. The rheological results showed that the materials experience a fluid–solid transition at the composition of 2 wt.%, beyond which a continuous MWNT network forms throughout the matrix and in turn promotes the reinforcement. The tensile modulus and yield stress of the nanocomposites are substantially increased relative to the neat polypropylene. Nanotube reinforcement thus enhanced the yield stress, while reducing the ductility. The same behavior is observed in flexural tests. Charpy impact resistance of the notched samples increases slightly by the addition of MWNT, while impact resistance for the un-notched samples decreases with the addition of MWNTs. Finally, optimum in mechanical properties was observed at 2 wt.% MWNTs, which is near the rheological percolation threshold. From transmission electron microscopic (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, it was observed that nanotubes are distributed reasonably uniformly indicating a good dispersion of nanotubes in the PP matrix. These results reveal that, preparation of nanocomposites from masterbatch dilution is an excellent method to obtain well-dispersed CNTs, while limiting the handling difficulties in plastics processing industrial workshops.  相似文献

The self sensing properties of cementitious composites reinforced with well dispersed carbon nanotubes and carbon nanofibers were investigated. The electrical resistance of cementitious nanocomposites with w/c = 0.3 reinforced with well dispersed carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and nanofibers (CNFs) at an amount of 0.1 wt% and 0.3 wt% of cement was experimentally determined and compared with resistivity results of nanocomposites fabricated with “as received” nanoscale fibers at the same loading. Results indicate that conductivity measurements, besides being a valuable tool in evaluating the smart properties of the nanocomposites, may provide a good correlation between the resistivity values measured and the degree of dispersion of the material in the matrix. The addition of CNTs and CNFs at different loadings was proven to induce a decrease in electrical resistance, with the nanocomposites containing 0.1 wt% CNTs yielding better electrical properties. Furthermore, conductivity measurements under cyclic compressive loading provided an insight in the piezoresistive properties of selected nanocomposites. Results confirm that nanocomposites, reinforced with 0.1 wt% CNTs and CNFs, exhibited an increased change in resistivity, which is indicative of the amplified sensitivity of the material in strain sensing.  相似文献

In the present study, we have fabricated a series of high temperature vulcanized silicone rubber (HTVSR)/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) nanocomposites with different CNT contents. The CNTs were pretreated by the chitosan salt before being incorporated into the HTVSR. The nanocomposites were then characterized in terms of morphological, thermal, mechanical and electrical properties. It was found that the chitosan salt pretreated CNTs dispersed uniformly within the HTVSR matrix, improving the thermal and mechanical properties of the HTVSR. The nanocomposites could remain conductive without losing inherent properties after 100 times of repeated stretching/release cycles by 100%, 200%, and even 300%. Moreover, the nanocomposites had good response to the compressed pressures. The results obtained from this study indicate that the fabricated nanocomposites are potential to be used in many electrical fields such as the conductive elastomer or the pressure sensor.  相似文献

Multiwall carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanocomposites have been successfully fabricated with melt blending. Two melt blending approaches of batch mixing and continuous extrusion have been used and the properties of the derived nanocomposites have been compared. The interaction of PMMA and CNTs, which is crucial to greatly improve the polymer properties, has been physically enhanced by adding a third party of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) compatibilizer. It is found that the electrical threshold for both PMMA/CNT and PMMA/PVDF/CNT nanocomposites lies between 0.5 to 1 wt% of CNTs. The thermal and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites increase with CNTs and they are further increased by the addition of PVDF For 5 wt% CNT reinforced PMMA/PVDF/CNT nanocomposite, the onset of decomposition temperature is about 17 degrees C higher and elastic modulus is about 19.5% higher than those of neat PMMA. Rheological study also shows that the CNTs incorporated in the PMMA/PVDF/CNT nanocomposites act as physical cross-linkers.  相似文献

Poly ether ether ketone (PEEK)/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) nanocomposites were fabricated to characterize and understand the orientation and dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in a polymer matrix. A focused-ion-beam (FIB) technique was used for milling the nanocomposite by a focused gallium ion beam, and the MWNTs were carefully observed. The PEEK preferentially disappeared when the Ga+ ion beam milled the composite, and MWNTs were exposed on the surface of composites. Using this method, it is very easy to estimate and directly evaluate the orientation of the MWNTs in the polymer matrix even though they are embedded in the polymer matrix. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was employed to characterize the detailed position of the nanotubes in the PEEK matrix.  相似文献

In this study, nanocomposites based on three commercial ethylene vinyl acetate copolymers (EVA) and purified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) have been prepared via direct melt blending. The influence of the matrix polarity, related here to the relative content in vinyl acetate units, on the mechanical properties has been studied, by comparing the tensile properties of the nanocomposites to those of the unfilled matrices. The relative Young’s modulus of the nanocomposites is shown to slightly increase with the polarity of the matrix. Tapping mode atomic force microscopy has been used to study the state of dispersion of the MWNTs in the EVA matrices. The morphological results do not show a clear dependence between the polarity of the matrix and the dispersion state of the nanotubes: increasing the vinyl acetate content in the EVA matrix does not generate a much finer dispersion of the MWNTs. This was confirmed by the experimental determination of the relative Young’s modulus compared with the theoretical predictions. The increase, with the VA content, of the relative stiffness of the resulting materials is further explained by the determination of the mean aspect ratio of the dispersed particles, as evaluated using the Halpin–Tsai model.  相似文献
