Content based image retrieval is an active area of research. Many approaches have been proposed to retrieve images based on matching of some features derived from the image content. Color is an important feature of image content. The problem with many traditional matching-based retrieval methods is that the search time for retrieving similar images for a given query image increases linearly with the size of the image database. We present an efficient color indexing scheme for similarity-based retrieval which has a search time that increases logarithmically with the database size.In our approach, the color features are extracted automatically using a color clustering algorithm. Then the cluster centroids are used as representatives of the images in 3-dimensional color space and are indexed using a spatial indexing method that usesR-tree. The worst case search time complexity of this approach isOn q log(N* navg)), whereN is the number of images in the database, andn q andn avg are the number of colors in the query image and the average number of colors per image in the database respectively. We present the experimental results for the proposed approach on two databases consisting of 337 Trademark images and 200 Flag images.  相似文献

Efficient and robust information retrieval from large image databases is an essential functionality for the reuse, manipulation, and editing of multimedia documents. Structural feature indexing is a potential approach to efficient shape retrieval from large image databases, but the indexing is sensitive to noise, scales of observation, and local shape deformations. It has now been confirmed that efficiency of classification and robustness against noise and local shape transformations can be improved by the feature indexing approach incorporating shape feature generation techniques (Nishida, Comput. Vision Image Understanding 73 (1) (1999) 121-136). In this paper, based on this approach, an efficient, robust method is presented for retrieval of model shapes that have parts similar to the query shape presented to the image database. The effectiveness is confirmed by experimental trials with a large database of boundary contours obtained from real images, and is validated by systematically designed experiments with a large number of synthetic data.  相似文献

Content-based image retrieval by hierarchical linear subspace method   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We describe a hierarchical linear subspace method to query large on-line image databases using image similarity as the basis of the queries. The method is based on the generic multimedia indexing (GEMINI) approach which is used in the IBM query through the image content search system. Our approach is demonstrated on image indexing, in which the subspaces correspond to different resolutions of the images. During content-based image retrieval, the search starts in the subspace with the lowest resolution of the images. In this subspace, the set of all possible similar images is determined. In the next subspace, additional metric information corresponding to a higher resolution is used to reduce this set. This procedure is repeated until the similar images can be determined. For evaluation we used three image databases and two different subspace sequences.  相似文献

In this paper a content-based image retrieval method that can search large image databases efficiently by color, texture, and shape content is proposed. Quantized RGB histograms and the dominant triple (hue, saturation, and value), which are extracted from quantized HSV joint histogram in the local image region, are used for representing global/local color information in the image. Entropy and maximum entry from co-occurrence matrices are used for texture information and edge angle histogram is used for representing shape information. Relevance feedback approach, which has coupled proposed features, is used for obtaining better retrieval accuracy. A new indexing method that supports fast retrieval in large image databases is also presented. Tree structures constructed by k-means algorithm, along with the idea of triangle inequality, eliminate candidate images for similarity calculation between query image and each database image. We find that the proposed method reduces calculation up to average 92.2 percent of the images from direct comparison.  相似文献

Image database design based on 9D-SPA representation for spatial relations   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Spatial relationships between objects are important features for designing a content-based image retrieval system. We propose a new scheme, called 9D-SPA representation, for encoding the spatial relations in an image. With this representation, important functions of intelligent image database systems such as visualization, browsing, spatial reasoning, iconic indexing, and similarity retrieval can be easily achieved. The capability of discriminating images based on 9D-SPA representation is much more powerful than any spatial representation method based on minimum bounding rectangles or centroids of objects. The similarity measures using 9D-SPA representation provide a wide range of fuzzy matching capability in similarity retrieval to meet different user's requirements. Experimental results showed that our system is very effective in terms of recall and precision. In addition, the 9D-SPA representation can be incorporated into a two-level index structure to help reduce the search space of each query processing. The experimental results also demonstrated that, on average, only 0.1254 percent /spl sim/ 1.6829 percent of symbolic pictures (depending on various degrees of similarity) were accessed per query in an image database containing 50,000 symbolic pictures.  相似文献

Content-based image indexing and searching using Daubechies' wavelets   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
This paper describes WBIIS (Wavelet-Based Image Indexing and Searching), a new image indexing and retrieval algorithm with partial sketch image searching capability for large image databases. The algorithm characterizes the color variations over the spatial extent of the image in a manner that provides semantically meaningful image comparisons. The indexing algorithm applies a Daubechies' wavelet transform for each of the three opponent color components. The wavelet coefficients in the lowest few frequency bands, and their variances, are stored as feature vectors. To speed up retrieval, a two-step procedure is used that first does a crude selection based on the variances, and then refines the search by performing a feature vector match between the selected images and the query. For better accuracy in searching, two-level multiresolution matching may also be used. Masks are used for partial-sketch queries. This technique performs much better in capturing coherence of image, object granularity, local color/texture, and bias avoidance than traditional color layout algorithms. WBIIS is much faster and more accurate than traditional algorithms. When tested on a database of more than 10 000 general-purpose images, the best 100 matches were found in 3.3 seconds.  相似文献

A typical content-based image retrieval (CBIR) system would need to handle the vagueness in the user queries as well as the inherent uncertainty in image representation, similarity measure, and relevance feedback. We discuss how fuzzy set theory can be effectively used for this purpose and describe an image retrieval system called FIRST (fuzzy image retrieval system) which incorporates many of these ideas. FIRST can handle exemplar-based, graphical-sketch-based, as well as linguistic queries involving region labels, attributes, and spatial relations. FIRST uses fuzzy attributed relational graphs (FARGs) to represent images, where each node in the graph represents an image region and each edge represents a relation between two regions. The given query is converted to a FARG, and a low-complexity fuzzy graph matching algorithm is used to compare the query graph with the FARGs in the database. The use of an indexing scheme based on a leader clustering algorithm avoids an exhaustive search of the FARG database. We quantify the retrieval performance of the system in terms of several standard measures.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a method to represent achromatic and chromatic image signals independently for content-based image indexing and retrieval for image database applications. Starting from an opponent colour representation, human colour vision theories and modern digital signal processing technologies are applied to develop a compact and computationally efficient visual appearance model for coloured image patterns. We use the model to compute the statistics of achromatic and chromatic spatial patterns of colour images for indexing and content-based retrieval. Two types of colour images databases, one colour texture database and another photography colour image database are used to evaluate the performance of the developed method in content-based image indexing and retrieval. Experimental results are presented to show that the new method is superior or competitive to state-of-the-art content-based image indexing and retrieval techniques.  相似文献

Digitization has created an abundance of new information sources by altering how pictures are captured. Accessing large image databases from a web portal requires an opted indexing structure instead of reducing the contents of different kinds of databases for quick processing. This approach paves a path toward the increase of efficient image retrieval techniques and numerous research in image indexing involving large image datasets. Image retrieval usually encounters difficulties like a) merging the diverse representations of images and their Indexing, b) the low-level visual characters and semantic characters associated with an image are indirectly proportional, and c) noisy and less accurate extraction of image information (semantic and predicted attributes). This work clearly focuses and takes the base of reverse engineering and de-normalizing concept by evaluating how data can be stored effectively. Thus, retrieval becomes straightforward and rapid. This research also deals with deep root indexing with a multi-dimensional approach about how images can be indexed and provides improved results in terms of good performance in query processing and the reduction of maintenance and storage cost. We focus on the schema design on a non-clustered index solution, especially cover queries. This schema provides a filter predication to make an index with a particular content of rows and an index table called filtered indexing. Finally, we include non-key columns in addition to the key columns. Experiments on two image data sets ‘with and without’ filtered indexing show low query cost. We compare efficiency as regards accuracy in mean average precision to measure the accuracy of retrieval with the developed coherent semantic indexing. The results show that retrieval by using deep root indexing is simple and fast.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a novel approach to image indexing by incorporating a neural network model, Kohonen’s Self-Organising Map (SOM), for content-based image retrieval. The motivation stems from the idea of finding images by regarding users’ specifications or requirements imposed on the query, which has been ignored in most existing image retrieval systems. An important and unique aspect of our interactive scheme is to allow the user to select a Region-Of-Interest (ROI) from the sample image, and subsequent query concentrates on matching the regional colour features to find images containing similar regions as indicated by the user. The SOM algorithm is capable of adaptively partitioning each image into several homogeneous regions for representing and indexing the image. This is achieved by unsupervised clustering and classification of pixel-level features, called Local Neighbourhood Histograms (LNH), without a priori knowledge about the data distribution in the feature space. The indexes generated from the resultant prototypes of SOM learning demonstrate fairly good performance over an experimental image database, and therefore suggest the effectiveness and significant potential of our proposed indexing and retrieval strategy for application to content-based image retrieval. The general-purpose shape retrieval problem is a challenging task. Particularly, an ideal technique, which can work in clustered environment, meet the requirements of perceptual similarity measure on partial query and overcoming dimensionality curse and adverse environment, is in demand. This paper reports our study on one local structural approach that addresses these issues. Shape representation and indexing are two key points in shape retrieval. The proposed approach combines a novel local-structure-based shape representation and a new histogram indexing structure. The former makes possible partial shape matching of objects without the requirement of segmentation (separation) of objects from complex background, while the latter has an advantage on indexing performance. The search time is linearly proportional to the input complexity. In addition, the method is relatively robust under adverse environments. It is able to infer retrieval results from incomplete information of an input by first extracting consistent and structurally unique local neighborhood information from inputs or models, and then voting on the optimal matches. Thousands of images have been used to test the proposed concepts on sensitivity analysis, similarity-based retrieval, partial query and mixed object query. Very encouraging experimental results with respect to efficiency and effectiveness have been obtained.  相似文献

Recently, as Web and various databases contain a large number of images, content-based image retrieval (CBIR) applications are greatly needed. This paper proposes a new image retrieval system using color-spatial information from those applications.First, this paper suggests two kinds of indexing keys to prune away irrelevant images to a given query image: major colors' set (MCS) signature related with color information and distribution block signature (DBS) related with spatial information. After successively applying these filters to a large database, we get only small amount of high potential candidates that are somewhat similar to a query image. Then we make use of the quad modeling (QM) method to set the initial weights of two-dimensional cell in a query image according to each major color. Finally, we retrieve more similar images from the database by comparing a query image with candidate images through a similarity measuring function associated with the weights. In that procedure, we use a new relevance feedback mechanism. This feedback enhances the retrieval effectiveness by dynamically modulating the weights of color-spatial information. Experiments show that the proposed system is not only efficient but also effective.  相似文献

Attempts have been made to extend SQL to work with multimedia databases. We are reserved on the representation ability of extended SQL to cope with the richness in content of multimedia data. In this paper we present an example of a multimedia database system, Computer Aided Facial Image Inference and Retrieval system (CAFIIR). The system stores and manages facial images and criminal records, providing necessary functions for crime identification. We would like to demonstrate some core techniques for multimedia database with CAFIIR system. Firstly, CAFIIR is a integrated system. Besides database management, there are image analysis, image composition, image aging, and report generation subsystems, providing means for problem solving. Secondly, the richness of multimedia data urges feature-based database for their management. CAFIIR is feature-based. A indexing mechanism, iconic index, has been proposed for indexing facial images using hierarchical self-organization neural network. The indexing method operates on complex feature measures and provides means for visual navigation. Thirdly, special retrieval methods for facial images have been developed, including visual browsing, similarity retrieval, free text retrieval and fuzzy retrieval.  相似文献

Starting from a member of an image database designated the "query image," traditional image retrieval techniques, for example, search by visual similarity, allow one to locate additional instances of a target category residing in the database. However, in many cases, the query image or, more generally, the target category, resides only in the mind of the user as a set of subjective visual patterns, psychological impressions, or "mental pictures." Consequently, since image databases available today are often unstructured and lack reliable semantic annotations, it is often not obvious how to initiate a search session; this is the "page zero problem." We propose a new statistical framework based on relevance feedback to locate an instance of a semantic category in an unstructured image database with no semantic annotation. A search session is initiated from a random sample of images. At each retrieval round, the user is asked to select one image from among a set of displayed images-the one that is closest in his opinion to the target class. The matching is then "mental." Performance is measured by the number of iterations necessary to display an image which satisfies the user, at which point standard techniques can be employed to display other instances. Our core contribution is a Bayesian formulation which scales to large databases. The two key components are a response model which accounts for the user's subjective perception of similarity and a display algorithm which seeks to maximize the flow of information. Experiments with real users and two databases of 20,000 and 60,000 images demonstrate the efficiency of the search process.  相似文献

Scalable color image indexing and retrieval using vector wavelets   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
This paper presents a scalable content-based image indexing and retrieval system based on vector wavelet coefficients of color images. Highly decorrelated wavelet coefficient planes are used to acquire a search efficient feature space. The feature space is subsequently indexed using properties of all the images in the database. Therefore, the feature key of an image not only corresponds to the content of the image itself but also to how much the image is different from the other images being stored in the database. The search time linearly depends on the number of images similar to the query image and is independent of the database size. We show that, in a database of 5,000 images, query search takes less than 30 msec on a 266 MHz Pentium II processor, compared to several seconds of retrieval time in the earlier systems proposed in the literature  相似文献
