Domestic Wastewater Treatment Systems (DWTS) are often cited as significant sources of pollution in rural catchments. A mass balance based model has been developed to determine annual nutrient loading from individual DWTS into rivers in Ireland. The transport and attenuation of nitrogen and phosphorus in DWTS effluent to groundwater and surface water has been formulated using the results from field research in Ireland, as well as being informed by other international studies. Conceptually the model splits the transport of nutrients to the river into three pathways: direct to surface water (for areas of inadequate percolation), a near surface (subsoil) pathway, and a groundwater pathway. The model quantifies the net nutrient contribution for each DWTS and has been incorporated into a broader source load apportionment catchment model which includes agricultural inputs, thereby enabling the relative risk of nutrient pollution from DWTS in a catchment to be defined. 相似文献

Bayesian Networks have been proposed as an alternative to rule-based systems in domains with uncertainty. Applications in monitoring and control can benefit from this form of knowledge representation. Following the work of Chong and Walley, we explore the possibilities of Bayesian Networks in the Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTP) monitoring and control domain. We show the advantages of modelling knowledge in such a domain by means of Bayesian networks, put forth new methods for knowledge acquisition, describe their applications to a real waste water treatment plant and comment on the results. We also show how a Bayesian Network learning environment was used in the process and which characteristics of data in the domain suggested new ways of representing knowledge in network form but with uncertainty representations formalisms other than probability. The results of applying a possibilistic extension of current learning methods are also shown and compared. 相似文献

This paper describes an assessment of the nitrogen and phosphorus dynamics of the River Kennet in the south east of England. The Kennet catchment (1200 km2) is a predominantly groundwater fed river impacted by agricultural and sewage sources of nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) pollution. The results from a suite of simulation models are integrated to assess the key spatial and temporal variations in the nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) chemistry, and the influence of changes in phosphorous inputs from a Sewage Treatment Works on the macrophyte and epiphyte growth patterns. The models used are the Export Co-efficient model, the Integrated Nitrogen in Catchments model, and a new model of in-stream phosphorus and macrophyte dynamics: the ‘Kennet’ model. The paper concludes with a discussion on the present state of knowledge regarding the water quality functioning, future research needs regarding environmental modelling and the use of models as management tools for large, nutrient impacted riverine systems. 相似文献

Traditionally, the sanitation infrastructures of most of the Urban Wastewater Systems (UWSs) have been managed individually, without considering the many relationships among the sewer systems, Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) and receiving waters. The main objective of WWTP management was to comply with the emission limits, without considering the ecological state of the receiving waters. However, the European Union approved the Water Framework Directive (WFD) in 2000 that changes the conventional practice by introducing the integrated approach concept in the hydraulic infrastructure management. The same Directive also promotes the availability and use of decision support tools for water management, specifically where water resources are becoming increasingly scarce. This paper describes the work conducted in the Besòs catchment (Catalonia, NE of Spain) in order to deal with this European legislation. A study site was selected to develop an integrated model as a support tool for the UWS management. Specifically, two sewer systems, their WWTPs and a reach of the Congost River (a tributary of the Besòs River) have been modelled. The selected software to model flow and water quality were Infoworks CS, GPS-X and Infoworks RS for the sewer systems, WWTPs and stream reach, respectively. Besides these, a specific program was developed to be used as a data transfer interface between software. Once this model integration platform was built, and taking into account the expert knowledge of the managers, several management scenarios were defined including some critical events such as industrial spills, rainfall episodes, inhibition of nitrification, WWTP shutdowns, obstruction of a sewer system conduit and episodes of minimum river flow rates as well as potential control actions such as the implementation of storage tanks or the use of bypasses between sewer systems or WWTPs. All these scenarios were modelled and simulated and the results obtained were then analysed, focusing the attention on the river water quality, with the main objective being to gain relevant knowledge to deal with the tested scenarios. 相似文献
