Engineering literature mostly focuses on the “objects” and techniques that interest engineers: there are only a few accounts of the people that do engineering work and what that work actually involves. The relevant literature contributes a combination of personal opinion, anecdotal reports, and empirical evidence from quantitative and a few qualitative surveys. Most of the empirical research provides only indirect and limited evidence on engineering work as it is practiced because the survey questions seem to be based on preconceived notions of engineering work. Almost all the papers in the literature that refer to engineering practice aim to provide evidence for changing engineering education or evidence to support a particular set of engineering competencies. From these narrow objectives we can learn a little about engineering work. More empirical evidence is needed before we can work towards a comprehensive understanding, let alone improvement of engineering working methods and practices. 相似文献

In this paper, we provide a brief overview of the historical underpinnings of the design-construction industry and the development of design engineering and construction engineering as independent but related subdisciplines of civil engineering. The effects of the first and second generation of computer tools on design engineering are identified. The complementary and evolving definitions of construction engineering and design engineering are examined, specifically in the context of structural design engineering activities and deliverables and the corresponding construction engineering activities and deliverables. The concept of an “engineering continuum” is introduced, and the process is recast in light of that concept. Several case studies are used to examine the promise of third generation design-construction computing technologies such as virtual design and construction and their potential beneficial impact on the cost and schedule of the typical design-construction project. Refinements to the definitions of construction and design engineering that have the potential to maximize the benefits of third generation technology are proposed with an eye toward the form of fourth generation computing technologies that are on the horizon. 相似文献

During the past decade, the number of biomedical engineering (BME) undergraduate degree programs that reported engineering bachelor's (BSE) degree recipients to the American Society for Engineering Education increased from 19 to 38 among the Association of American Universities institutions (AAUs). This increase in BME BSE degree recipients coincided with substantial decreases in the percentage of women receiving BSE degrees at the public AAUs. AAUs that had BME BSE degree recipients in 2000 or first reported BME graduates between 2000 and 2009 experienced a decrease in the percentage and number of women receiving engineering undergraduate degrees across the other engineering disciplines. Demographic data for public and private AAUs and within the four largest engineering disciplines, electrical and computer engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, and chemical engineering show that the percentage and number of non-BME female BSE degree recipients decreased contemporaneously with an increase in the number of BME degree programs and BME BSE degree recipients. Academic leaders and diversity professionals should see the results presented here as cautionary. The targeting of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines toward specific underrepresented groups is discussed with respect to ongoing limited degree attainment of women in these fields. Construction education is not new. It was a part of the practical aspects of many early civil engineering degree programs. As early as the 1920's, specializations in construction engineering were found in a few civil engineering programs, paralleling structural engineering and other areas. However, the gradual need for more specialization than could normally be integrated in the civil engineering degree eventually led to the formation of some construction specialty degree undergraduate programs, particularly after World War II. This paper documents the historical evolution of construction education, promotes construction as a stand-alone professional engineering discipline, provides information for schools that are interested in starting an undergraduate construction engineering and management (CEM) degree program, and discusses the engineering accreditation aspects of the CEM curriculum and the role of the construction industry in the CEM curriculum development. 相似文献
