The kinetics of steam reforming of methane was determined on a Ni-YSZ anode, which we refer to as anode ‘A’ and on a Ni-YSZ anode modified by the addition of a basic compound, which we refer to as anode ‘B’. A salient feature of our work is that the data were collected on 50 μm thick anodes screen-printed on 110 μm thick YSZ electrolytes and the experiments were carried out in a fuel cell configuration. Orders in methane and steam were both higher on the modified Ni-YSZ anode. Activation energy was also higher on this anode suggesting different nature of sites in the two anodes. In the present study we have attempted to generate kinetic data at steam/carbon ratios which are economically attractive for fuel cell operation.

Creation of an autothermal system by coupling an endothermic to an exothermic reaction demands matching the thermal requirements of the two reactions. The application studied here is the operation of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) with both direct (DIR) and indirect (IIR) internal reforming of methane. Such internal reforming within a high-temperature fuel cell module can lead to an overall autothermal operation which simplifies the system design and increases efficiency. However, such coupling is not easy to achieve because of the mismatch between the thermal load associated with the rate of steam reforming at typical SOFC temperatures and the local amount of heat available from the fuel cell reactions. Previous results have shown that the use of typical metal-based (e.g. Ni) IIR catalysts leads to full methane consumption but undesirable local cooling at the reformer entrance and the use of less active IIR catalysts (e.g. non-metals or diffusion limited nickel) leads to methane being carried-over into the SOFC anode (methane slippage). In order to evaluate performance in the latter case, a combined DIR and IIR SOFC steady-state model has been developed. Simulation results have shown that, lowering the IIR catalyst activity to prevent local cooling effects at the reformer entrance is not adequate, as the fast kinetics of the direct reforming reaction then lead to full methane conversion and steep temperature gradients in the first 10% of the fuel channel length. It is shown that the simultaneous reduction of the anode DIR reaction rate improves performance considerably. The system behaviour towards changes in current density, operating pressure, and flow configuration (counter-flow vs. co-flow) has been studied. Reduction of both DIR and IIR catalyst activity combined with a counter-flow operation leads to the best performance. System performance with an IIR oxide-based catalyst is also evaluated.

Various kinds of precious metals were added to the Ni-Y2O3-stabilized zirconia (Ni-YSZ) cermets, and the relation between steam reforming of CH4 and the electrochemical activity as a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) anode was investigated. Ru and Pt additions promoted the reforming and suppressed the coke depositions. The electrochemical activity of the SOFC anode was enhanced by the addition of Ru and Pt, indicating that these precious metals effectively functioned as the anode catalysts. The impedance related to gas diffusion was greatly reduced, indicating that stability of the anode catalyst of SOFC was considerably improved since coke was hardly deposited.

This work is aimed at understanding the reaction mechanism of propane internal reforming in the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). This mechanism is important for the design and operation of SOFC internal processing of hydrocarbons. An anode-supported SOFC unit with Ni-YSZ anode operating at 800 °C was tested with direct feeding of 5% propane. CO2 reforming of propane was carried out in a reactor with Ni-YSZ catalyst to simulate internal propane processing in SOFC. The performance of this direct propane SOFC is stable. The C specie formed over the anode functional layer of SOFC can be completely removed. The major gas products of SOFC are H2, CO, CH4, C2H4 and CO2. Pseudo-steady-state internal processing of propane in the anode catalytic layer of SOFC is associated with a CO2/C3H8 molar ratio of about 1.26 and basically CO2 reforming of propane. CO2 dissociation to produce the O species to oxidize the C species from dehydrogenation and dissociation of propane and its fragments should be the major reaction during CO2 reforming of propane.

Creation of an autothermal system by coupling an endothermic to an exothermic reaction demands the matching of the thermal requirements of the two reactions. The application under study is a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) with indirect internal reforming (IIR) of methane, whereby the endothermic steam reforming reaction is thermally coupled to the exothermic oxidation reactions. A steady-state model of an IIR-SOFC has been developed to study the mismatch between the thermal load associated with the rate of steam reforming at typical SOFC temperatures and the local amount of heat available from the fuel cell reactions. Results have shown a local cooling effect, undesirable for ceramic fuel cells, close to the reformer entrance. The system behaviour towards changes in catalyst activity, fuel inlet temperature, current density, and operating pressure has been studied. Increasing the operating pressure is shown to be an effective way of reducing both the local cooling caused by the reforming reactions and the overall temperature increase across the cell. Simulations for both counter-flow and co-flow configurations have been performed and compared.

In recent years, fuel cell technology has attracted considerable attention from several fields of scientific research as fuel cells produce electric energy with high efficiency, emit little noise, and are non-polluting. Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are particularly important for stationary applications due to their high operating temperature (1,073–1,273 K). Methane appears to be a fuel of great interest for SOFC systems because it can be directly converted into hydrogen by direct internal reforming (DIR) within the SOFC anode. Unfortunately, internal steam reforming in SOFC leads to inhomogeneous temperature distributions which can result in mechanical failure of the cermet anode. Moreover this concept requires a large amount of steam in the fed gas. To avoid these problems, gradual internal reforming (GIR) can be used. GIR is based on local coupling between steam reforming and hydrogen oxidation. The steam required for the reforming reaction is obtained by the hydrogen oxidation. However, with GIR, Boudouard and cracking reactions can involve a risk of carbon formation. To cope with carbon formation a new cell configuration of SOFC electrolyte support was studied. This configuration combined a catalyst layer (0.1%Ir–CeO2) with a classical anode, allowing GIR without coking. In order to optimise the process a SOFC model has been developed, using the CFD-Ace+ software package, and including a thin electrolyte. The impact of a thin electrolyte on previous conclusions has been assessed. As predicted, electrochemical performances are higher and carbon formation is always avoided. However a sharp decrease in the electrochemical performances appears at high current densities due to steam clogging.

A test system based around a thin‐walled extruded solid electrolyte tubular reactor has been developed, which enables the fuel reforming catalysis and surface chemistry occurring within solid oxide fuel cells and the electrochemical performance of the fuel cell to be studied under genuine operating conditions. It permits simultaneous monitoring of the catalytic chemistry and the cell performance, allowing direct correlation between the fuel cell performance and the reforming characteristics of the anode, as well as enabling the influence of drawing current on the catalysis and surface reaction pathways to be studied. Temperature‐programmed reaction measurements can be carried out on anodes in an actual SOFC, and have been used to investigate the reduction characteristics of different anode formulations, methane activation and methane steam reforming, and to evaluate the nature and level of carbon deposition on the anode during reforming. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

Natural gas appears to be a fuel of great interest for SOFC systems. The principal component of natural gas is methane, which can be converted into hydrogen by direct or gradual internal reforming (DIR or GIR) within the SOFC anode. However, DIR requires a large amount of steam to produce hydrogen. If the injected mixture contains very small quantities of steam, GIR is then obtained. With GIR, the risk of carbon formation is even greater. This paper proposes a model and simulation, using the CFD-Ace software package, of the behaviour of a tubular SOFC using GIR and a comparison between utilization in DIR and GIR. A thermal study is included in the model and a detailed thermodynamic analysis is carried out to predict the carbon formation boundary for SOFCs fuelled by methane. Thermodynamic equilibrium calculations taking into account Boudouard and methane cracking reactions allowed us to investigate the occurrence of carbon formation. Simulations were used to calculate the distributions of partial pressures for all the gas species (CH4, H2, CO, CO2, H2O), current densities and potentials in both electronic and ionic phases within the anode part (i.e., gas channel and cermet anode). The simulations indicate that there is no decrease in electrochemical performance if GIR is used rather than DIR. A thermal study appears to confirm that the cooling effect due to the endothermic reforming reaction is eliminated in GIR, but the thermodynamic study indicates that carbon formation can be suspected for xH2O/xCH4 ratios lower than one.

Mathematical models of direct internal reforming solid oxide fuel cell (DIR‐SOFC) fueled by methane are developed using COMSOL® software. The benefits of inserting Ni‐catalyst rod in the middle of tubular‐SOFC are simulated and compared to conventional DIR‐SOFC. It reveals that DIR‐SOFC with inserted catalyst provides smoother temperature gradient along the system and gains higher power density and electrochemical efficiency with less carbon deposition. Sensitivity analyses are performed. By increasing inlet fuel flow rate, the temperature gradient and power density improve, but less electrical efficiency with higher carbon deposition is predicted. The feed with low inlet steam/carbon ratio enhances good system performances but also results in high potential for carbon formation; this gains great benefit of DIR‐SOFC with inserted catalyst because the rate of carbon deposition is remarkably low. Compared between counter‐ and co‐flow patterns, the latter provides smoother temperature distribution with higher efficiency; thus, it is the better option for practical applications. © 2009 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2010  相似文献

This paper presents an investigation into the complex interactions between catalytic combustion and CH4 steam reforming in a co-flow heat exchanger where the surface combustion drives the endothermic steam reforming on opposite sides of separating plates in alternating channel flows. To this end, a simplified transient model was established to assess the stability of a system combining H2 or CH4 combustion over a supported Pd catalyst and CH4 steam reforming over a supported Rh catalyst. The model uses previously reported detailed surface chemistry mechanisms, and results compared favorably with experiments using a flat-plate reactor with simultaneous H2 combustion over a γ-Al2O3-supported Pd catalyst and CH4 steam reforming over a γ-Al2O3-supported Rh catalyst. Results indicate that stable reactor operation is achievable at relatively low inlet temperatures (400 °C) with H2 combustion. Model results for a reactor with CH4 combustion indicated that stable reactor operation with reforming fuel conversion to H2 requires higher inlet temperatures. The results indicate that slow transient decay of conversion, on the order of minutes, can arise due to loss of combustion activity from high-temperature reduction of the Pd catalyst near the reactor entrance. However, model results also show that under preferred conditions, the endothermic reforming can be sustained with adequate conversion to maintain combustion catalyst temperatures within the range where activity is high. A parametric study of combustion inlet stoichiometry, temperature, and velocity reveals that higher combustion fuel/air ratios are preferred with lower inlet temperatures (≤500 °C) while lower fuel/air ratios are necessary at higher inlet temperatures (600 °C).

This study presents a performance analysis of a proton-conducting SOFC (SOFC-H+) with internal reforming of methane. The autothermal reforming within the SOFC-H+ stack is considered to be a potential solution of the carbon formation problem facing in operation of internal steam reforming SOFC-H+. A one-dimensional, steady-state model of the SOFC-H+ coupled with a detailed electrochemical model is employed to investigate its performance in terms of power density and fuel cell efficiency. The simulation results show that when SOFC-H+ is operated under an autothermal reforming environment, the presence of carbon monoxide, which is a major cause of carbon formation, in the fuel cell stack decreases. Effect of key operating parameters, such as temperature, steam-to-carbon and oxygen-to-carbon feed ratios, current density and fuel utilization, on the SOFC-H+ performance in terms of electrical efficiencies and energy demand is also investigated. The results indicate that operating temperatures have strong influence on SOFC-H+ performance, carbon monoxide production and heat generation.

We demonstrate that supported Sn/Ni alloy catalyst is more resistant to deactivation via carbon deposition than supported monometallic Ni catalyst in steam reforming of isooctane at moderate steam to carbon ratios, irrespective of the average size of metal particles and the metal loading. The experiments were performed for average diameters of catalytic particles ranging from 30 to 500 nm and for the loading of active material ranging from 15 to 44 wt% with respect to the total mass of catalyst. The steam reforming reactions were performed at conditions that are consistent with typical solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) operating conditions. DFT calculations show that the reasons for the enhanced carbon-tolerance of Sn/Ni compared to monometallic Ni are high propensity of Sn/Ni to oxidize carbon and lower driving force to form carbon deposits on low-coordinated metal sites.

A Ru/CGO catalyst was investigated in combination with a Cu current collector for the direct electro-oxidation and internal reforming of propane in a solid oxide fuel cell. The electrochemical power densities for the direct oxidation were larger than in the internal reforming process at 750 °C. The electrochemical performance in the presence of propane was significantly affected by the polarization resistance which was about three times larger than that obtained for the SOFC fed with hydrogen at 750 °C. However, out-of-cell steam reforming tests showed a C3H8 conversion to syngas approaching 90% at 800 °C. Thus, significant enhancements may be achieved by properly optimizing the anode structure. No formation of carbon deposits was observed both upon operation of the anode in the direct oxidation and internal reforming processes at 750 °C.

Electrocatalytic reforming of carbon dioxide by methane in SOFC system
The reaction of carbon dioxide catalytic reforming with methane is an attractive route because these greenhouse gases can be converted into variable feedstocks. However this reaction is a highly energy consuming and coke forming process. These problems were improved by the electrocatalytic reforming of CO2 with CH4 in a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) membrane reactor system, which generates high electrical power and synthesis gases. The single cell consists of catalyst electrode (NiO–MgO), counter electrode ((La,Sr)MnO3) and Y2O3 stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) electrolyte. The reaction rates of CO2 and CH4, and the electrochemical properties were investigated by an on-line GC and impedance-analyzer under open- and closed-circuit conditions, respectively. It was found that reaction rates of CO2 and CH4 under the closed-circuit condition were more stable than those of the open-circuit. The results were interpreted that the stability of catalyst anode was maintained by the reaction of oxygen ion transferred from the cathode with the surface carbon formed in the internal CO2 reforming by CH4 in SOFC system.

This article aims to investigate the transient behavior of a planar direct internal reforming solid oxide fuel cell (DIR-SOFC) comprehensively. A one-dimensional dynamic model of a planar DIR-SOFC is first developed based on mass and energy balances, and electrochemical principles. Further, a solution strategy is presented to solve the model, and the International Energy Agency (IEA) benchmark test is used to validate the model. Then, through model-based simulations, the steady-state performance of a co-flow planar DIR-SOFC under specified initial operating conditions and its dynamic response to introduced operating parameter disturbances are studied. The dynamic responses of important SOFC variables, such as cell temperature, current density, and cell voltage are all investigated when the SOFC is subjected to the step-changes in various operating parameters including both the load current and the inlet fuel and air flow rates. The results indicate that the rapid dynamics of the current density and the cell voltage are mainly influenced by the gas composition, particularly the H2 molar fraction in anode gas channels, while their slow dynamics are both dominated by the SOLID (including the PEN and interconnects) tem-perature. As the load current increases, the SOLID temperature and the maximum SOLID temperature gradient both increase, and thereby, the cell breakdown is apt to occur because of excessive thermal stresses. Changing the inlet fuel flow rate might lead to the change in the anode gas composition and the consequent change in the current den-sity distribution and cell voltage. The inlet air flow rate has a great impact on the cell temperature distribution along the cell, and thus, is a suitable manipulated variable to control the cell temperature.

Abstract

Reformed gas made by the steam methane reforming(SMR) process is used as fuel feed to MCFC, but it is not as good as pure hydrogen due to the presence of CO2 and CO. The sorption-enhanced steam methane reforming(SE-SMR) process can reduce CO2 and CO to a low level and produce high purity hydrogen. Considering the merits of similar operating temperatures (about 500°C) and carbon dioxide recycle, a novel concept of a six-step sorption-enhanced steam methane reforming (SE-SMR) combined with electricity generation by molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) is proposed. In the present paper, a cycle of the SE-SMR process, which include the steps of reaction/adsorption, depressurization, gas purges (nitrogen and reformed gas, respectively), and pressurization with reformed gas, is modeled and analyzed. The process stream in the SE-SMR process is used as anode feed in MCFC. According to the result of numerical simulation, a fuel cell grade hydrogen product (above 80% purity) at the SE-SMR temperature of 450°C can be obtained. A carbon dioxide recycle mechanism is developed for cathode feed of MCFC from flue gas by burning with excess air to achieve a proper CO2/air ratio (about 30:70). The novel electricity generation system, which can operate at lower energy consumption and high purity hydrogen feed is helpful for the MCFC'S performance and life time.
