Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/chitosan interpenetrating polymer networks (IPN) were prepared by UV irradiation. The water sorption behavior of the IPNs was measured at various temperatures and humidity levels. The water uptake of IPN13 is greater than that of other IPNs. Vapor sorption behavior is more affected by the density of water vapor than by hydrophilic properties with increasing temperature. Equilibrium water uptake increases as humidity increases, and the increase is more noticeable at high humidity. The sorption system of all IPNs is a relaxation‐controlled mechanism at a relative humidity (RH) of 90%, but it is a Fickian diffusion‐controlled mechanism when the RH is below 50%. With an increase in humidity, the diffusion coefficients were found to increase due to greater penetration of water into the IPNs. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Temperature‐ and pH‐responsive semiinterpenetrating polymer network (SIPN) hydrogels, constructed with chitosan (CS) and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC), were studied. The characterizations of the IPN hydrogels were investigated by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and swelling tests, under various conditions. CS/PDADMAC SIPN hydrogels exhibited a relatively high swelling ratio, in the range of 248–462%, at 25°C. The swelling ratio of CS/PDADMAC IPN hydrogels are pH, temperature, and ionic concentration dependent. DSC was used for the quantitative determination of the amounts of freezing and nonfreezing water. The amount of free water increased with increasing PDADMAC content in the IPN hydrogels. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 91: 2876–2880, 2004  相似文献

Interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogels based on poly(vinyl alcohol) and 1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone were prepared by radical polymerization with 2,2‐dimethoxy‐2‐phenylacetophenone as a photoinitiator and N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide as a crosslinker. The IPN hydrogels were analyzed for the sorption behavior of water at 35°C and a relative humidity of 95% with a dynamic vapor sorption system, and water diffusion coefficients were calculated. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to quantitatively determine the amounts of freezing and nonfreezing water. The free‐water contents in the IPN hydrogel samples PV51, PV31, and PV11 were 74.40, 64.03, and 60.48% in pure water, respectively. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Temperature‐responsive interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogels constructed with poly(vinyl alcohol) and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) using the sequential IPN method were studied. The characteristics of IPN hydrogels were investigated using the dynamic vapor sorption system. IPN hydrogels exhibited a relatively high sorption ratio, 180–360% at room temperature. The sorption ratio of hydrogels depended on temperature. Diffusion coefficients were calculated according to the Fickian Law at several temperatures. The apparent activation energy was 5.43 kJ mol?1, which corresponds to typical diffusion processes. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 90: 1389–1392, 2003  相似文献

An interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) composed of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) was prepared by the sequential IPN method. The equilibrium swelling ratio and bending behavior under electric fields of the IPN hydrogel were measured in an aqueous NaCl solution. The IPN exhibited a high equilibrium swelling ratio, in the range 280–380%. When the IPN in aqueous NaCl solution was subjected to an electric field, the IPN showed significant and quick bending toward the cathode. The IPN hydrogel also showed stepwise bending behavior, depending on the electric stimulus. In addition, the ionic conductivity of the IPN hydrogel was measured using dielectric analysis, and its conductive behavior followed the Arrhenius equation. The conductivity of the IPN hydrogel and the activation energy for the form of the IPN were 1.68 × 10?5 S/cm at 36°C and 61.0 kJ/mol, respectively. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogels based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(acrylamide‐co‐sodium methacrylate) poly(AAm‐co‐SMA) were prepared by the semi IPN method. These IPN hydrogels were prepared by polymerizing aqueous solution of acrylamide and sodium methacrylate, using ammonium persulphate/N,N,N1,N1‐tetramethylethylenediamine (APS/TMEDA) initiating system and N,N1‐methylene‐bisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker in the presence of a host polymer, poly(vinyl alcohol). The influence of reaction conditions, such as the concentration of PVA, sodium methacrylate, crosslinker, initiator, and reaction temperature, on the swelling behavior of these IPNs was investigated in detail. The results showed that the IPN hydrogels exhibited different swelling behavior as the reaction conditions varied. To verify the structural difference in the IPN hydrogels, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to identify the morphological changes in the IPN as the concentration of crosslinker varied. In addition to MBA, two other crosslinkers were also employed in the preparation of IPNs to illustrate the difference in their swelling phenomena. The swelling kinetics, equilibrium water content, and water transport mechanism of all the IPN hydrogels were investigated. IPN hydrogels being ionic in nature, the swelling behavior was significantly affected by environmental conditions, such as temperature, ionic strength, and pH of the swelling medium. Further, their swelling behavior was also examined in different physiological bio‐fluids. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 98: 302–314, 2005  相似文献

Semi‐ and full‐interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogels composed of poly(vinyl alcohol) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) were prepared to investigate the bending behavior under the electric response. To find out the characteristics of the hydrogel in the medium, swelling ratio, and rate and water state of the hydrogels were measured. The swelling ratio of the semi‐IPN hydrogels increased with PEI content in the matrix, whereas that of full‐IPN hydrogels dramatically decrease with increase of PEI contents in the hydrogels. In the water state of hydrogel, the bound water and free water of semi‐IPN hydrogels increased with PEI weight ratio. The full‐IPN hydrogels show the lower free water content in comparison with the semi‐IPN hydrogel. The IPN hydrogels exhibited bending angle change in response to external stimulus such as voltage, the bending angle increased with PEI concentration. In addition, the repeated bending behaviors according to the magnitude of the applied electric field revealed that the bending angle is reversible without collapse of formation of hydrogel in all samples. Thus, the hydrogels will be useful as novel modulation systems in the field of artificial organ and matrix for drug delivery. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

A series of novel hydrogels were prepared from acrylic acid (AA), N‐vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP), and chitosan by photopolymerization. The swelling behavior, gel strength, and drug release behavior of the poly(AA/NVP) copolymeric hydrogels and corresponding interpenetrating polymer network hydrogels were investigated. Results showed that the swelling ratios for the present hydrogels decreased with an increase of NVP content in the gel, but the gel strength increased with an increase of NVP content in the gel. Results also showed that the drug‐release behavior for the gels is related to the ionicity of drug and the swelling ratio of the gel. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel interpenetrating polymer network membranes were made from poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) blends of different compositions. The two polymer components were independently crosslinked chemically with glutaraldehyde and photochemically with 4,4′‐diazostilbene‐2,2′‐disulfonic acid disodium salt. The membrane performances were studied in pervaporation of tetrahydrofuran (THF)/water and THF/methanol mixtures. It was found that the membranes were excellent in THF dehydration, but much less efficient for the separation of THF/methanol mixtures. The pervaporation results were consistent with the membrane swelling data. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 89: 2808–2814, 2003  相似文献

In this study, pH‐ and temperature‐responsive hydrogels based on linear sodium alginate (SA) and crosslinked poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) were prepared by semi‐interpenetrating network (semi‐IPN) technique. The dually responsive hydrogels were characterized by FTIR, DSC, and SEM, and their temperature‐ and pH‐responsive behaviors were investigated by measuring equilibrium swelling ratios and pulsatile swelling experiments. The results showed that these hydrogels underwent volume phase transition at around 33°C irrespective of the pH value of the medium, but their pH sensitivity was evident only below their volume phase transition temperature. Under basic conditions, the swelling ratios of SA/PNIPAAm semi‐IPN hydrogels were greater than that of pure PNIPAAm hydrogel and increased with increasing SA content incorporated into the hydrogels, but the case was inverse under acidic conditions. The pulsatile swelling experiments indicated that the higher the SA content in SA/PNIPAAm semi‐IPN hydrogels, the faster the response rate to both pH and temperature change. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) constructed with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(diallyldimethyl ammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) using a sequential IPN method were prepared. The thermal characterization of the IPNs was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dielectric analysis (DEA), and thermogravimtric analysis (TGA). Decreases in the melting temperature of PVA segments in IPNs were observed with increasing PDADMAC content using DSC. DEA was employed to ascertain glass transition temperature of IPNs. The thermal decomposition of IPNs was investigated using TGA, and thermal decomposition of IPNs could be decelerated by changing PVA content. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hydrogels of mono-n-alkyl itaconate/N-acrylamide have been synthesised. The swelling process at three different pH values (acid, neutral and basic) has been studied. The experimental data indicate that our hydrogels follow second-order swelling kinetics. According to this, the kinetic constant, K, and the swelling capacity at equilibrium, W, have been calculated. The influence of the solvent pH and the molar mass of the mono-n-alkyl itaconate monomeric unit has been analysed. It seems that the general balance between the hydrogen bonding and the hydrophobic interactions regulates the swelling process of these hydrogels.  相似文献

This work refers to the synthesis and characterization of thermosensitive hydrogels based on interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) and calcium alginate in the form of films. The influence of the crosslinking degree of PNIPAAm and alginate content on thermal, swelling, mechanical, and morphological properties of hydrogels is investigated in detail. Characterization of pure PNIPAAm hydrogels and IPN hydrogels was performed by FTIR, DSC, DMA, and SEM. In addition, the studies of equilibrium swelling behavior as well as swelling, deswelling, and reswelling kinetics are performed. The results obtained imply the benefits of synthesizing IPNs based on PNIPAAm and calcium alginate over pure PNIPAAm hydrogels. The presence of calcium alginate contributes to the improvement of mechanical properties, the deswelling rate of hydrogels, and the network porosity, without altering the thermosensitivity of PNIPAAm significantly. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) composed of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) were prepared by the sequential‐IPN method. The thermal characterization of the IPNs was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and dielectric analysis (DEA). Depression of the melting temperature (Tm) of the PVA segment in IPNs was observed with increasing PNIPAAm content using DSC. DEA was employed to ascertain the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of IPNs. From the result of DEA, IPNs exhibited two Tg values, indicating the presence of phase separation in the IPNs. The thermal decomposition of IPNs was investigated using TGA and appeared at near 200°C. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 90: 881–885, 2003  相似文献

A series of novel semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) composed of poly[(acrylamide)‐co‐(sodium acrylate)] with varying amounts (5, 10, and 15 wt%) of poly[(vinylsulfonic acid), sodium salt] was synthesized. The semi‐IPN hydrogels were characterized by infrared spectroscopy. The swelling behavior of these IPNs was studied in distilled water/physiological solutions/buffer solutions/salt solutions. As the amount of poly[(vinylsulfonic acid), sodium salt] increased in the network, the swelling capacity of the semi‐IPNs increased considerably. The swelling and diffusion characteristics such as water penetration velocity (v), diffusion exponent (n), and diffusion coefficient (D) were calculated in distilled water, as well as in other physiological solutions. The highest swelling capacity was noted in urea and glucose solutions. The semi‐IPN hydrogels followed non‐Fickian diffusion behavior in water and physiological fluids, whereas Fickian behavior was observed in buffer solutions. The stimuli‐responsive characteristics towards physiological fluids, salt concentration, and temperature of these semi‐IPN hydrogels were also investigated. The swelling behavior of the semi‐IPNs decreased markedly with an increase of the concentration of the salt solutions. Copyright © 2006 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Some structural features of hydrogels from poly(acrylic acid) (PAAc) of various crosslinking degrees have been investigated through mechanical and swelling measurements. Interpenetrating polymer hydrogels (IPHs) of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and PAAc have been prepared by a sequential method: crosslinked PAAc chains were formed in aqueous solution by crosslinking copolymerization of acrylic acid and N,N‐methylenebisacrylamide in the presence of PVA. The application of freeze–thaw (F–T) cycles leads to the formation of a PVA hydrogel within the synthesized PAAc hydrogel. The swelling and viscoelastic properties of the IPHs were evaluated as a function of the content of crosslinker and the application of one F–T cycle. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Semi‐interpenetrating networks (Semi‐IPNs) with different compositions were prepared from poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) by the sol‐gel process in this study. The characterization of the PDMS/PVA semi‐IPN was carried out using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and swelling measurements. The presence of PVA domains dispersed in the PDMS network disrupted the network and allowed PDMS to crystallize, as observed by the crystallization and melting peaks in the DSC analyses. Because of the presence of hydrophilic (? OH) and hydrophobic (Si? (CH3)2) domains, there was an appropriate hydrophylic/hydrophobic balance in the semi‐IPNs prepared, which led to a maximum equilibrium water content of ~ 14 wt % without a loss in the ability to swell less polar solvents. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) prepared from poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAAc) and sodium alginate (SA) exhibited electrical sensitive behavior. The swelling behavior of the PMAAc/SA IPN hydrogel was studied by immersion of the gel into aqueous HCl solutions at various concentrations and into various pH buffer solutions, and their responses to electric fields were also investigated. When swollen IPN hydrogel was placed between a pair of electrodes it exhibited bending behavior on application of an electric field, and showed stepwise bending behavior depending on the magnitude of the electrical stimulus.
