It is presented here how some cure characteristics and mechanical properties of rubber compounds based on nonpolar rubber, natural rubber (NR), are affected by filling with conifer wood flour, both nonmodified or corona treated in air or in ammonia. The corona treatment was performed at room temperature and varied both: treatment duration and voltage to find out the maximal reinforcing effect of the modified wood flour. The discharge voltage was varied at 10, 12, and 15 kV to include both (1) the range of relative low voltages (lower than 10 ÷ 12 kV in which the major active species arise from ionized and activated air oxygen and (2) the range of relative high voltages (12 kV and higher) in which the active species arise from simultaneously ionized and activated air oxygen and nitrogen. The chemical composition of the nonmodified and corona‐treated wood surface was controlled by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The activity of the modified wood flour was evaluated by comparative measurement of some basic mechanical parameters of rubber compounds, filled at equal level by nonmodified or plasma‐treated wood flour. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nonmodified and corona‐activated conifer wood flour was evaluated as filler to nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) compounds containing different amounts of phenol‐formaldehyde resin (PFAR) by studying the cure characteristics and the mechanical properties of the filled compounds. It was found that the PFAR affects considerably the cure characteristics and the mechanical properties of the wood flour–filled NBR compounds due to a presumable action as an interface interactions modifier. Acting as an antiaging agent it improves also their thermal‐oxidative stability. The optimal amount of PFAR regarding the cure characteristics and mechanical parameters is of 15 phr/100 phr wood flour. The addition of PFAR just before the wood flour is preferable because of both its better homogenization in the rubber matrix and its lower adsorption by the wood flour, leading to an improvement of the mechanical properties of the wood flour–filled NBR compounds. The replacement of nonmodified wood flour by corona‐activated wood flour leads to additional increase of the mechanical parameters without significant affect of the optimum cure time, aging resistance, and water adsorption. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of the content and size of the filler on the curing characteristics and mechanical properties of linoleum flour‐reinforced acrylonitrile‐butadiene rubber (NBR) composites are analyzed. The linoleum flour was obtained from wastes of linoleum production. The effects of this filler are compared with those of two other kinds of lignocellulosic fillers. Four filler percentages (10, 20, 30 and 40 phr) were added to the rubber. The morphology of the fillers was studied and then related to the curing and mechanical characteristics of the studied compounds. The results indicate that all the fillers behave as vulcanizing agents, accelerating the vulcanization process, which is reflected in a significant decrease of the optimum cure time. In this case, linoleum is the most effective one; however, it produces lower mechanical properties than the other two systems. The results obtained together with the positive environmental impact in the recycling of production wastes would justify the use of linoleum flour in rubber technology. Polym. Eng. Polypropylene (PP) composites filled with wood flour (WF) were prepared with a twin‐screw extruder and an injection‐molding machine. Three types of ecologically friendly flame retardants (FRs) based on ammonium polyphosphate were used to improve the FR properties of the composites. The flame retardancy of the PP/WF composites was characterized with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), vertical burn testing (UL94‐V), and limiting oxygen index (LOI) measurements. The TGA data showed that all three types of FRs could enhance the thermal stability of the PP/WF/FR systems at high temperatures and effectively increase the char residue formation. The FRs could effectively reduce the flammability of the PP/WF/FR composites by achieving V‐0 UL94‐V classification. The increased LOI also showed that the flammability of the PP/WF/FR composites was reduced with the addition of FRs. The mechanical property study revealed that, with the incorporation of FRs, the tensile strength and flexural strength were decreased, but the tensile and flexural moduli were increased in all cases. The presence of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) resulted in an improvement of the filler–matrix bonding between the WF/intumescent FR and PP, and this consequently enhanced the overall mechanical properties of the composites. Morphological studies carried out with scanning electron microscopy revealed clear evidence that the adhesion at the interfacial region was enhanced with the addition of MAPP to the PP/WF/FR composites. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Composites with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as major matrix constituent, ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) as polymeric plasticizer and wood flour (WF) and fly ash (FA) as filler were extruded. Morphology of the samples was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Morphological study indicated good dispersion of the constituents. Infrared spectroscopy (IR) indicates interaction between EVA and PVC and also between the polymeric matrix and WF. The effect of various constituents on glass transition temperature (Tg) was evaluated using differential scanning calorimetry. Addition of EVA decreased the Tg, whereas Tg was increased due to addition of WF and FA. Study indicated that reduction in Tg on addition of EVA was compensated by increase in Tg due to addition of WF. The contribution of FA to change in Tg was not significant. Resulting composites have Tg close to that of PVC. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

The effect of carbon black fillers viz. semireinforcing furnace (SRF), high abrasion furnace (HAF) and intermediate super abrasion furnace (ISAF) carbon blacks on the cure, swelling and mechanical properties of 70/30 EPDM/NBR blend have been investigated. The maximum torque values have been found to be increased with increase in filler loading. Filledsystems have been found to exhibit a reduced solvent uptake tendency compared to the unfilled sample. Blends loaded with ISAF exhibited the lowest toluene uptake among the carbon black filled systems due to the better filler reinforcement. A more uniform morphology has been observed for ISAF‐filled samples compared to the other filler loaded systems. The improvement in the mechanical properties has been observed to be the highest for ISAF‐filled samples followed by HAF and SRF filled systems. This has been attributed to the smaller particle size of ISAF black. The experimental results of mechanical testing have been compared with various theoretical models. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. With the increasing interest in environmental and health issues, legal restrictions, such as European Union (EU) End of Life Vehicle Directives, were strengthened. This led us to incorporate nano zinc oxide (nano‐ZnO), with particle sizes of 30–40 nm and specific surface areas of 25.0–50.0 m2/g, instead of conventional ZnO into natural rubber (NR)/butadiene rubber (BR) compounds to decrease the content of zinc in the formulation. In the unfilled system, only a 20 wt % nano‐ZnO content, compared to conventional zinc oxide content, showed the cure characteristics and mechanical properties of the same level. This was because the increase in the specific surface area of the nano‐ZnO led to an increase in the degree of crosslinking. The effect of nano‐ZnO on the cure characteristics and mechanical properties was more pronounced in the silica‐filled system than in the unfilled system. This was mainly because of the dispersing agent used in the silica‐filled system, which also improved the dispersion of nano‐ZnO. The silica‐filled NR/BR compounds containing 0.3–3.0 phr of nano‐ZnO showed improved curing characteristics and mechanical properties, such as optimum cure time, 100 and 300% modulus, tensile strength, and tear strength compared to the compound with 5 phr of conventional ZnO. The optimum amounts of nano‐ZnO and stearic acid were only 1.0 and 0.1 phr, respectively. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2010  相似文献

The objective of this study was the production of rice husk flour (RHF) and wood flour (WF) filled polybutylene succinate (PBS) biocomposites as alternatives to cellulosic material filled conventional plastic (polyolefins) composites. PBS is one of the biodegradable polymers, made from the condensation reaction of 1,4‐butanediol and succinic acid that can be naturally degraded in the natural environment. We compared the mechanical properties between conventional plastics and agro‐flour–filled PBS biocomposites. We evaluated the biodegradability and mechanical properties of agro‐flour–filled PBS biocomposites according to the content and filler particle size of agro‐flour. As the agro‐flour loading was increased, the tensile and impact strength of the biocomposites decreased. As the filler particle size decreased, the tensile strength of the biocomposites increased but the impact strength decreased. The addition of agro‐flour to PBS produced a more rapid decrease in the tensile strength, notched Izod impact strength, and percentage weight loss of the biocomposites during the natural soil burial test. These results support the application of biocomposites as environmentally friendly materials. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 97: 1513–1521, 2005  相似文献

The cure characteristics and mechanical properties of blends consisting of hydrogenated natural rubber (HNR) and natural rubber (NR) blends were investigated. The HNR/NR blends at 50/50 wt ratio were vulcanized using various cure systems: peroxide vulcanization, conventional vulcanization with peroxide, and efficient vulcanization with peroxide. The HNR/NR vulcanizates cured by the combination of peroxide and sulfur donor (tetramethylthiuram disulfide, TMTD) in the efficient vulcanization with peroxide exhibited the best mechanical properties. It was also found that the hydrogenation level of HNR did not affect the tensile strength of the vulcanizates. The tensile strength of the blends decreased with increasing HNR content because of the higher incompatibility to cause the noncoherency behavior between NR and HNR. However, the HNR/NR vulcanizate at 50/50 wt ratio showed the maximum ultimate elongation corresponding to a co‐continuous morphology as attested to by scanning electron micrographs. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Composites of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), hydrogenated acrylonitrile–butadiene rubber (HNBR) and silica were prepared. Sulfur (S), dicumyl peroxide (DCP) and a combination of S and DCP (M) were used as curing agents, respectively. The morphology of the composites with different blend ratio was examined to correlate with observations on mechanical properties by scanning electron microscopy. The effects of blend ratio and curing systems on the curing characteristics and mechanical properties, such as stress–strain behavior, tensile strength, elongation at break and hardness of SBR/HNBR/Silica composites, were studied. Composites prepared by M curing systems showed comparatively better mechanical properties, wet traction and rolling resistance than S and D curing systems. The tensile strength, tear strength, and elongation at break were improved by adding HNBR for M curing systems. The wet traction of the vulcanizates containing HNBR was better than that of the vulcanizates without HNBR. A relatively uniform dispersion of silica was observed for SBR/HNBR/silica compositions compared with SBR/silica composites.  相似文献

The properties of silicone rubber filled with three kinds of binary mixtures of alumina particles with different size distribution (i.e., 30 μm + 0.5 μm, 10 μm + 0.5 μm, and 5 μm + 0.5 μm) were investigated as a function of relative volume fraction of the 0.5 μm particles in the hybrid alumina (Vs) at a fixed total filler content of 55 vol%. The results indicate that each binary mixture of alumina‐filled silicone rubber exhibited improved thermal conductivity and tensile strength, and decreased dielectric constant, compared to a single particle size filler‐reinforced one, and the maximum improvements were obtained at the Vs ranging from 0.2 to 0.35; the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of filled silicone rubber obviously reduced with increase in the Vs, whereas the elongation at break slightly decreased. At Vs = 0, the larger particles‐filled silicone rubber showed higher thermal conductivity, CTE, dielectric constant, and elongation at break, and lower tensile strength compared with the those of the smaller particles‐filled one. The moisture absorption and mechanical properties of wood flour–filled polypropylene composites in a hydrothermal environment have been studied by immersing the composites in water at 23, 60, and 100°C. The degree of moisture absorption was found to be dependent on the modification of matrix, the weight percentage, mesh size, and surface treatment of wood flours. It increased with increasing the immersion temperature. The tensile strength of all composites with wood flours of different contents, mesh sizes, and surface treatments increased after immersion in water baths of various temperatures, to either greater or lesser extents. The flexural strength and modulus followed a similar trend when immersed in water at ambient temperature. However, the contrary was true for composites when immersed in 60 and 100°C water baths. The impact strength increased after immersion in water at each immersion temperature, and the extent of such increment decreased with increasing the immersion temperature. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Curing characteristics, tensile properties, fatigue life, swelling behavior, and morphology of waste tire dust (WTD)/carbon black (CB) hybrid filler filled natural rubber (NR) compounds were studied. The WTD/CB hybrid filler filled NR compounds were compounded at 30 phr hybrid filler loading with increasing partial replacement of CB at 0, 10, 15, 20, and 30 phr. The curing characteristics such as scorch time, t2 and cure time, t90 decreased and increased with increment of CB loading in hybrid filler (30 phr content), respectively. Whereas maximum torque (MHR) and minimum torque (ML) increased with increasing CB loading. The tensile properties such as tensile strength, elongation at break, and tensile modulus of WTD/CB hybrid filler filled NR compounds showed steady increment as CB loading increased. The fatigue test showed that fatigue life increased with increment of CB loading. Rubber–filler interaction, Qf/Qg indicated that the NR compounds with the highest CB loading exhibited the highest rubber–filler interactions. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs of tensile and fatigue fractured surfaces and rubber–filler interaction study supported the observed result on tensile properties and fatigue life. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR)‐based composites were prepared by incorporating short nylon fibers of different lengths and concentration into the matrix using a two‐roll mixing mill according to a base formulation. The curing characteristics of the samples were studied. The influence of fiber length, loading, and rubber crosslinking systems on the properties of the composites was analyzed. Surface morphology of the composites has been studied using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Addition of nylon fiber to NBR offers good reinforcement, and causes improvement in mechanical properties. A fiber length of 6 mm was found to be optimum for the best balance of properties. It has been found that at higher fiber loadings, composites show brittle‐type behavior. Composites vulcanized by the dicumyl peroxide (DCP) system were found to have better mechanical properties than that by the sulfur system. The swelling behavior of the composites in N,N‐dimethyl formamide has been analyzed for the swelling coefficient values. Composites vulcanized in the DCP system were found to have higher rubber volume fraction than that in the sulfur system, which indicates better rubber–fiber interaction in the former. The crosslink densities of various composites were also compared. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 92: 1023–1030, 2004  相似文献

Curing characteristics, tensile properties, morphological studies of tensile fractured surfaces using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the extent of rubber filler interactions of rattan‐powder‐filled natural rubber (NR) composites were investigated as a function of filler loading and silane coupling agent (CA). NR composites were prepared by the incorporation of rattan powder at filler loading range of 0–30 phr into a NR matrix with a laboratory size two roll mill. The results indicate that in the presence of silane CA, scorch time (ts2), and cure time (t90) of rattan‐powder‐filled NR composites were shorten, while, maximum torque (MH) increased compared with NR composites without silane CA. Tensile strength and tensile modulus of composites were enhanced whereas elongation at break reduced in the presence of silane CA mainly due to increase in rubber‐filler interaction. It is proven by SEM studies that the bonding between the filler and rubber matrix has improved. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012  相似文献

Water absorption and mechanical performance of the injection‐molded hybrid composites prepared from different ratios of two polymer blends (57 wt%), two compatibilizers (3 wt%), and two wood species (40 wt%) were investigated. The ratio of polypropylene and high‐impact polystyrene (HIPS) gradually increased in the blend (from 10 to 30 wt%). Styrene–ethylene–butylene–styreneblock copolymer and maleic anhydride‐grafted PP (MAPP) were used as compatibilizer (3 wt%). The shore D hardness of the PP/wood composites was improved by the incorporation of the HIPS. The HIPS/wood flour composites showed higher tensile modulus but lower tensile strength than the PP/wood composites. The water resistance of the PP/wood composites decreased with increasing HIPS content. POLYM. COMPOS., 38:863–869, 2017. © 2015 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

The influence of highly degraded high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) on physical, rheological, and mechanical properties of HDPE‐wood flour composites was studied. For this purpose, the virgin HDPE was subjected to accelerated weathering under controlled conditions for 200 and 400 h. The virgin and exposed HDPE and pine wood flour were compounded to produce wood flour‐HFPE composites. The results showed that the accelerated weathering highly degraded HDPE. Degradation created polar functional carbonyl groups and also produced extensive cross‐linking in HDPE and consequently poor processibility. The interruptions in the flow characteristics of the degraded HDPE potentially caused processing hurdles when using them for extrusion or injection molding manufacturing as only small part (10%) of virgin HDPE could be replaced by highly degraded HDPE for wood flour‐HDPE composite manufacturing. The mechanical properties of composites containing highly degraded HDPEs were similar to the composites with virgin HDPE and in some cases they exhibited superior properties, with the exception being with the impact strength. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Recycling discarded rubber is important for both environmental and economic reasons. One of the most attractive methods of recycling rubber waste is to use ground rubber (GR) as a compounding ingredient or as a replacement for raw polymers. In this study, ground natural rubber was prepared with different curing systems and compounded into the parent compounds. The cure behaviors and physical properties of the GR‐filled vulcanizates were investigated, and they were largely affected by the curing systems of the rubber matrix and GR. GR‐filled vulcanizates with GR and the rubber matrix, having a conventional curing system, showed the largest changes in the cure characteristics. The greatest decrease in the physical properties was observed for peroxide‐cured‐GR‐filled vulcanizates. The addition of GR decreased the crosslink density of the GR‐filled vulcanizates. This was thought to be the main reason for the reduction of the mechanical properties of the GR‐filled vulcanizates. However, the adhesion between the GR and rubber matrix may also have caused the differences in the physical properties of the GR‐filled vulcanizates with respect to the curing systems of the rubber matrix and GR. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Viscoelastic and dielectric properties of composites with polyvinyl chloride as major matrix constituent, ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) as polymeric plasticizer, and wood flour (WF) and fly ash (FA) as filler have been studied. The effect of variation of WF, FA, and EVA on storage modulus E′, loss modulus E″, and glass transition temperature, Tg has been evaluated using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Effect on permittivity ε′ and conductivity is evaluated using dielectric analysis. The results show considerable influence of constituents of the composite on the properties evaluated. DMA shows that WF contributes to an increase in Tg, E′, and E″ and a decrease in loss tangent, tan δ. The FA content has insignificant effect on these properties. Increasing WF content increases ε′. Ultra fine nickel ferrite have been synthesized by the sol‐gel method. By heat treating different portions of the prepared powder separately at different temperatures, nano‐sized particles of nickel ferrite with varying particle sizes were obtained. These powders were characterised by the X‐ray diffraction and then incorporated in the nitrile rubber matrix according to a specific recipe for various loadings. The cure characteristics and the mechanical properties of these rubber ferrite composites (RFCs) were evaluated. The effect of loading and the grain size of the filler on the cure characteristics and tensile properties were also evaluated. It is found that the grain size and porosity of the filler plays a vital role in determining the mechanical properties of the RFCs. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献
