The morphology development of ethylene copolymers was modeled with the modified phase‐field theory. The metastability of polymer crystallization was also considered in the modeling. Modeling and experimental work were simultaneously undertaken to compare the crystallization kinetics of single‐site‐catalyzed and Ziegler‐catalyzed resins and their influence on morphology development in the rotational‐molding process. With a more uniform short‐chain branch distribution, the single‐site copolymers developed well‐defined spherulitic structures. The Ziegler–Natta catalyst resins were characterized by a higher nuclei density and a faster crystallization rate and produced finer structures in the molded parts. The modeling approach proposed in our work allowed an evaluation of the processing and the material effects on the development of morphological features during melt solidification. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Differential scanning calorimetry, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, small‐angle X‐ray scattering, and transmission electron microscope are employed to study the microstructure of biaxially self‐reinforced high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) prepared in uniaxial oscillating stress field by dynamic packing injection molding. The results indicate that the biaxial self‐reinforcement of HDPE is mainly due to the existence of interlocking shish‐kebab morphology (i.e., zip fastener structure), along with the orientation of lamellae and molecular chains and the enhanced crystallinity. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE)/high density polyethylene (HDPE) blends doped conductive graphite powders were constructed by the traditional melt‐blending method to acquire the conductive compatible polymer composites, and corresponding positive temperature coefficient (PTC) effect of electrical resistivity was investigated. The results indicated that the room‐temperature resistivity gradually decreased and PTC effects were remarkably enhanced by regulating the graphite contents or LLDPE/HDPE ratios. Especially, with increasing graphite contents, the polymer‐fixed composites showed the notable double PTC effects, originating from the volume expansion of the co‐crystallization or their fraction. Whereas, with increasing the LLDPE/HDPE ratio, the PTC effects of the graphite‐fixed composites occurred at the lower temperature, even far below the melting points of the co‐crystallization. Therefore, the regulation of co‐crystallization morphology of compatible polymer matrices was a new idea in the improvement of PTC materials. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Waste crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) was partially decrosslinked to obtain a thermoplastic recycled material through solid‐state mechanochemical milling with pan‐mill equipment at ambient temperature. The gel fraction and size exclusion chromatography measurements showed that the gel content of XLPE decreased remarkably with increasing cycles of mechanochemical milling, whereas the molecular weight of the sol fraction was not significantly reduced; this indicated the realization of partial decrosslinking during mechanochemical milling. Differential scanning calorimetry and X‐ray diffraction analysis showed that the melting temperature of decrosslinked polyethylene increased by 3.5°C because the bigger crystallites size resulting from the higher mobility of the chain segment. The improved thermoplastic characteristic of XLPE after mechanochemical milling were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and rheological measurement. The mechanical properties of recycled XLPE also achieved significant improvement after mechanochemical milling. Solid‐state mechanochemical milling is a cost‐effective, reliable, and environmentally friendly method for recycling XLPE at ambient temperature without any additional materials or chemicals. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Uniaxial oscillating stress field by dynamic packing injection molding (DPIM) is well established as a means of producing uniaxially self‐reinforced polyethylene and polypropylene. Here, the effects on the mechanical properties of high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) in both flow direction (MD) and transverse direction (TD) of packing modules and processing parameters in DPIM are described. Both biaxially and uniaxially self‐reinforced HDPE samples are obtained by uniaxial shear injection molding. The most remarkable biaxially self‐reinforced HDPE specimens show a 42% increase of the tensile strength in both MD and TD. The difference of stress–strain behavior and impact strength between MD and TD for the DPIM moldings indicates the asymmetry of microstructure in the two directions. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel rotation extrusion processing system was self‐designed to prepare high‐performance polyethylene (PE) pipes. In this study, during the extrusion of the PE pipes at a high mandrel rotation speed, compressed air, as a cooling medium, was introduced through their interior to achieve the quick cooling of the inner wall and the effects of the inner wall cooling rate on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the obtained PE pipes were investigated. The experimental results showed that in contrast to conventional extrusion, the molecular orientation deviated from the axial direction under a high mandrel rotation speed and was fixed by the inner wall cooling; with increasing cooling rate, the orientation degree also increased. On the other hand, cooling promoted the augmentation of spherulites. So when the cooling rate reached a certain high point, the effect of cooling on the formation of spherulites was stronger than that on the fixation of the orientation. A much higher cooling rate decreased the orientation degree, which was closely related to the performance of the PE pipe. As a result, there was an optimal cooling rate of the inner wall during the rotation extrusion for better performance of the PE pipe. When the cooling rate was 1.5°C/s, the hoop strength of the PE pipe produced by the novel extrusion method increased from the original 24.1 MPa up to 37.1 MPa without a decrease in the axial strength, and the pipe's crack initiation time increased from 27 to 70 h. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In order to deepen the mechanisms at the basis of mold surface replication onto the molded plastic surface, a novel experimental approach is proposed. Up to 20 different mold surface textures were made by machining with repetitive patterns of peaks and valleys. Mold replication tests were performed by over-molding of high density polyethylene (HDPE) on steel inserts. The surface morphology of inserts and injection molded parts was acquired by surface analyzer, and all the main roughness parameters were extracted and compared as well as the geometrical profiles. Surface morphology was also measured on molded samples after thermal relaxation at 100°C. As expected, a strong correlation was found between the roughness of mold insert and molded part over the full experimented range. Profiles on the molded surface have the same repetitive pattern of the corresponding insert surface but with lower peaks, higher valleys, and a horizontal shrinkage. Comparing molded HDPE surface profiles before and after thermal relaxation, it was observed a similar change to the one highlighted between mold insert and molded part. This occurrence suggests that the final surface appearance of the molded part is also a function of the relaxation mechanism during or immediately after injection molding.  相似文献

The effect of SCORIM was investigated on three grades of polybutene‐1 and one grade of ethylene–butene‐1 copolymer. The methods and processing conditions used for injection molding and the properties of the moldings are reported. Phase transformations and their relationship with mechanical properties are discussed in detail. Both, conventional and shear‐controlled orientation injection molding (SCORIM) were employed to produce moldings. SCORIM is based on the application of specific macroscopic shears to a solidifying melt. The multiple shear action enhances molecular alignment. The moldings were investigated by performing mechanical tests, fractographic analysis, differential scanning calorimetry studies, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, polarized light microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The application of SCORIM improves the mechanical performance. Molecular orientation results in the formation of shish‐kebab morphology. One grade of polybutene‐1 exhibited a greater than fivefold increase in Young's modulus. The application of high cavity pressures favored the formation of the stable Form I' in polybutene‐1. The formation of Form I' led to a decrease in crystallinity and mechanical properties. However, this loss was by far smaller than the gain obtained via the formation of shish‐kebab morphology. The relationship between mechanical properties and micromorphologies of the investigated materials is explained. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 88: 814–824, 2003  相似文献

To understand the crystalline morphology of the parts molded by gas-assisted injection molding (GAIM), in this work, the hierarchical structures and the crystalline morphology of gas-assisted injection molded high-density polyethylene (HDPE) were investigated. According to the comparison between the results of the GAIM part and those of the conventional injection molded counterpart, it is found that gas penetration can remarkably enhance the shear rate during GAIM process and oriented lamellar structure, shish-kebab structure and common spherulites arise in the skin, subskin and gas channel region, respectively, owing to the different shear rate in these regions. Meanwhile, cooling rate also plays an important role in the formation of the oriented crystalline structure.  相似文献

To compare the difference of morphological evolution of HDPE micropart and macropart, micropart with 200 μm thickness and macropart with 2000 μm thickness were prepared. The PLM images of micropart and macropart exhibited a similar “skin–core” structure, but the micropart showed a much larger fraction of orientation layer. The SEM observation of core layer of micropart featured an unoriented lamellae structure and shear layer of micropart showed a highly oriented shish‐kebab structure. The 2D‐WAXD patterns of shear layer of macropart indicated twisted oriented shish‐kebab (KM‐I) structures, however that of micropart indicated untwisted oriented shish‐kebab (KM‐II) structures which was firstly found in microinjection molding. The diffraction pattern of the micropart exhibited stronger azimuthal dependence than the shear layer of macropart, indicating the most pronounced orientation of HDPE chains within lamellae. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) has been widely used in piezoelectric applications as films and nanofiber mats, but there are limited publications on piezoelectric wet‐spun fibers. In this work, PVDF fibers were prepared using the wet spinning method, and the processing parameters, including the drawing ratio and heat setting temperature, were controlled in the continuous wet spinning system to increase the β‐phase crystallinity of the fibers. In addition, the wet‐spun PVDF fibers were compressed by a rolling press to eliminate voids in the fibers. Then, the compressed PVDF fibers were poled to align the molecular dipoles. The crystal structures of the PVDF fibers were investigated using X‐ray diffraction and Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy. Single filament tensile tests were performed to measure the tensile strength of the fibers. The morphologies of the PVDF fibers with respect to the processing parameters were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and polarization optical microscopy. The piezoelectric constant of the prepared PVDF fibers was then measured using a d33 meter. The wet‐spun PVDF fibers showed the highest β‐phase and piezoelectric constants when the drawing ratio and heat setting temperature were 6 and 150 °C, respectively. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Thermal analyses of microparts in high density polyethylene (HDPE) have shown that the specific processing conditions used in microinjection molding have irreversible consequences on the polymer morphology. This result has been demonstrated with the analysis of the non‐isothermal crystallization behavior of a HDPE with different thermal histories. The evolution of the absolute crystallinity has been analyzed with a relevant model able to separate the primary and secondary mechanisms all over the crystallization duration. This model has emphasized that the evolution of the primary crystallinity with time is different for the microparts compared to the conventional objects. These differences were attributed to variations of the crystallization mechanisms, especially within the nucleation phase, where a persistent melt memory effect of the former chains orientation/extension was assumed. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Crystal morphologies of high density polyethylene (HDPE) with low molecular weight obtained by gas-assisted injection molding (GAIM), conventional injection molding (CIM), and spontaneous cooling, respectively, were studied by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). It is found that banded spherulites are generated in the inner zone of GAIM parts and the outer zone of CIM parts but are absent in quiescent parts. According to the results, the representative morphologies of crystal change with gradual increment of instantaneous flow field in crystallization from non-banded spherulite to banded spherulite and then to oriented lamellae. This morphological evolution indicates that banded spherulites could be induced by flow field with certain intensity, which is confined by both an upper critical value and a lower one.  相似文献

In this study, an increase in the cooling rate of high‐density polyethylene parts was carried out via a change in the fluid flow pattern to introduce gas cooling under a gas‐assisted injection‐molding process; this was conducive to the retention of orientation chains shaped during the injection stage and further developed into much more oriented crystals. Morphological observation showed that the parts without gas cooling (WOGC) were composed of oriented crystals except the gas channel zone, whereas the parts with gas cooling (WGC) were full of oriented crystals, especially much more interlocking shish‐kebab structures in the subskin zone. The WGC parts had a higher degree of orientation than the corresponding zone of the WOGC parts. Although the lower crystallinity, the wider orientation regions, and much more interlocking shish‐kebab structures led to considerable increases from 32 and 990 MPa in the WOGC parts to 36 and 1150 MPa in the WGC parts for the yield strength and elastic modulus, respectively. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An optical fiber sensor similar to the one developed by Thomas and Bur 1 was constructed for the monitoring of the crystallization of three polyesters during the injection molding process. The polyesters studied were: polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), polytrimethylene terephthalate (PTT), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). With this optical system it was possible to obtain, in real time, some essential parameters of the polyester crystallization kinetics at different processing conditions. Thus, a study of the influence of injection molding variables on the nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of these polyesters was done. The processing variables were: mold wall and injection temperatures, Tw and Ti, respectively; flow rate, Q; and holding pressure, Ph. The experiments were done following a first order central composite design statistical analysis. The morphology of the samples was analyzed by polarized light optical microscopy, PLOM. The signal of the laser beam during the filling and the crystallization stages of the injection molding of these materials was found to be reproducible. The measurements showed that this system was sensitive to variations of the crystallization of different types of polymers under different processing conditions. The system was not able, however, to monitor the crystallization process when the crystallinity degree developed by the sample was very low, as in the PET resin. It was also observed that Tw and Ti were the most influential variables on the crystallization kinetics of PBT and PTT. Due to its slower crystallization kinetics, PTT was found to be more sensitive to changes in these parameters than the PBT. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 99: 563–579, 2006  相似文献

Previously, bi‐axial self‐reinforcement of high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) was achieved through a uni‐axial shear stress field introduced by dynamic packing injection molding technology. Here, further improvement of tensile strength along the flow direction (MD) was achieved by blending a small amount of high‐molecular‐weight polyethylene (HMWPE) with HDPE, while the tensile strength along the transverse direction (TD) still substantially exceeded that of conventional moldings. Tensile strengths in both flow and transverse directions were considerably enhanced, with improvements from 23 MPa to 76 MPa in MD and from 23 MPa to 31 MPa in TD. The effect of HMWPE content and molding parameters on tensile properties was also investigated. The tensile strength along MD was highly dependent on HMWPE content, oscillating cycle, mold temperature, melt temperature and packing pressure, while that along TD was insensitive to composition and processing parameters within the selected design space. According to the stress–strain curves, samples with HMWPE produced by dynamic packing injection molding had a special tensile failure mode in MD, different from both typical plastic and brittle failure modes. There were no yielding and necking phenomena, which are characteristic during tensile testing of plastic materials, but there was still a considerably higher elongation compared to those of brittle materials. However, in TD, all dynamic injection molding samples exhibited plastic failure as did typical conventional injection molding samples. Copyright © 2006 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The prediction of the crystallinity and microstructure that develop in injection molding is very important for satisfying the required specifications of molded products. A novel approach to the numerical simulation of the skin‐layer thickness and crystallinity in moldings of semicrystalline polymers is proposed. The approach is based on the calculation of the entropy reduction in the oriented melt and the elevated equilibrium melting temperature by means of a nonlinear viscoelastic constitutive equation. The elevation of the equilibrium melting temperature that results from the entropy reduction between the oriented and unoriented melts is used to determine the occurrence of flow‐induced crystallization. The crystallization rate enhanced by the flow effect is obtained by the inclusion of the elevated equilibrium melting temperature in the modified Hoffman–Lauritzen equation. Injection‐molding experiments at various processing conditions were carried out on polypropylenes of various molecular weights. The thickness of the highly oriented skin layer and the crystallinity in the moldings were measured. The measured data for the microstructures in the moldings agree well with the simulated results. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 95: 502–523, 2005  相似文献
