In this study, we prepared and characterized membranes containing polypropylene, poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate) (EVA), and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The production process involved blend extrusion and calendering followed by solvent extraction by toluene and water of the EVA and PVA phases. Morphology studies involving scanning electron microscopy determined the pore size distribution at the surface and in the internal regions of the membrane. The resulting membrane properties were related to the processing variables (extension rate, process temperature, and solvent extraction methods) and blend composition. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of addition of propylene copolymer, produced by metallocene catalysts, on the mechanical, rheological, and morphological properties of blends based on poly(propylene) (PP) and ethylene–1‐octene copolymer (EOC) was evaluated. It was observed that the addition of 2 wt % propylene–1‐octene copolymer (POC) improved the impact strength of the EOC/PP blends. The rheological analysis indicated that the addition of propylene copolymer produced materials with improved processability. Thermal and morphological analysis showed that the POC acts as a compatibilizer on the EOC/PP blends. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, J Appl Polym Sci 89: 1690–1695, 2003  相似文献

The spinnability and mechanical properties of poly(propylene) (PP)/zeolite‐supported Ag+ (zeolite‐Ag)/ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) ternary blend fibers were studied. It was found that the spinning temperature of the ternary blend fibers was decreased in the presence of EVA. The addition of 2 wt % EVA substantially improved the spinnability of the blend system by enhancing its flowability. It was also found that the ternary fiber with EVA28 (28 wt % vinyl acetate content) showed balanced improvement of mechanical properties by a concomitant increase in modulus and tensile strength. The improvements of spinnability and mechanical properties suggested that a core–shell structure of zeolite‐Ag/EVA28 particles, with zeolite‐Ag as the core and EVA28 as the shell, was formed and remained during the melt‐mixing process of the blended chips and during the course of fiber processing. EVA probably enhanced the binding between the zeolite‐Ag and the PP matrix, as made evident in SEM microphotographs. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 96: 1460–1466, 2005  相似文献

Summary: Propylene was copolymerized with 10‐undecen‐1‐ol using dimethylsilanylbis(2‐methyl‐4‐phenyl‐1‐indenyl)zirconium dichloride as catalyst and MAO and TIBA as cocatalysts. Comonomer incorporations from 0.1 to 0.9 mol‐% (0.5 to 3.6 wt.‐%) were obtained. These hydroxyl functionalized copolymers were applied as compatibilizers to PP/PA6 blend with a composition of 70/30. For comparison, hydroxyl functionalized polyethylene prepared with metallocene catalyst and commercial MAH grafted ethylene butyl acrylate (E/BA/MAH) and poly(propylene) (PP‐g‐MAH) were also used as compatibilizers. Effects of the compatibilizers on morphology and mechanical and thermal properties of the blends were studied. Enhanced adhesion between the blend components was observed in morphology and dynamic mechanical studies. Although improvement in toughness was not as pronounced as expected, there were indications that the hydroxyl functionalized propylene copolymers prepared with metallocene catalysts could serve as a new type of compatibilizer in polymer blends.

The thermal and mechanical properties and the morphologies of blends of poly(propylene) (PP) and an ethylene–(vinyl alcohol) copolymer (EVOH) and of blends of PP/EVOH/ethylene–(methacrylic acid)–Zn2+ ionomer were studied to establish the influence of the ionomer addition on the compatibilization of PP/EVOH blends and on their properties. The oxygen transmission rate (O2TR) values of the blends were measured as well. PP and EVOH are initially incompatible as was determined by tensile tests and scanning electronic microscopy. Addition of the ionomer Zn2+ led to good compatibility and mechanical behaviour was improved in all blends. The mechanical properties on extruded films were studied for 90/10 and 80/20 w/w PP/EVOH blends compatibilized with 10 % of ionomer Zn2+. These experiments have shown that the tensile properties are better than in the injection‐moulded samples. The stretching during the extrusion improved the compatibility of the blends, diminishing the size of EVOH domains and enhancing their distribution in the PP matrix. As was to be expected, the EVOH improved the oxygen permeation of the films, even in compatibilized blends. Copyright © 2004 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Phase behavior of aqueous systems containing block copolymers of poly(ethylene oxide (PEO) and poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) was evaluated by building up temperature-concentration phase diagrams. We have studied bifunctional triblock copolymers (HO-PEO-PPO-PEO-OH) and monofunctional diblock copolymers (R-PEO-PPO-OH and R-PPO-PEO-OH, where R length is linear C4 and C12–14). The cloud points of the polymer solutions depended on EO/PO ratio, polarity, R length and position of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments along the molecule. Such factors influence on the solutions behavior was also analyzed in terms of critical micelle concentration (CMC), which was obtained from surface tension vs. concentration plots. Salts (NaCl and KCl) added into the polymer solutions change the solvent polarity decreasing the cloud points. On the other hand, the cloud points of the polymer solutions increased as a hydrotrope (sodium p-toluenesulfonate) was added. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Composites of palm fibers and poly(propylene) (PP) were compounded in an extruder at 200°C. The composites were subsequently injection molded into standard tensile specimens for mechanical characterization. The fracture morphology of the specimens was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. It was observed that the composite modulus increased with the increase of fiber content, indicating the existence of adhesion between PP and the much stiffer palm fibers. However, the adhesion was not satisfactory and resulted in a decrease in the composite tensile strength with fiber addition. The compatibilizer Epolene E‐43 was used to minimize this incompatibility between the wood fibers and the PP matrix. The maleated PP additive enhanced the fiber–matrix adhesion, resulting in an improvement in composite performance. Also, small fibers showed better mechanical properties than those of long fibers. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 92: 2581–2592, 2004  相似文献

Polypropylene (PP) and acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene blends of different composition were prepared using a single‐screw extruder. The binary blend of PP/ABS was observed to be incompatible and shows poor mechanical properties. PP‐g‐2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (2‐HEMA) was used as a compatibilizer for the PP/ABS blends. The ternary compatibilized blends of PP/ABS/PP‐g‐2‐HEMA showed improvement in the mechanical properties. Electron micrographs of these blends showed a homogeneous and finer distribution of the dispersed phase. The mechanical performance increased particularly in the PP‐rich blend. The 2.5‐phr (part per hundred of resin) compatibilizer was observed to bring improvement to the properties. The suitability of various existing theoretical models for the predication of the tensile moduli of these blends was examined. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Commercial grade poly(ethylene terephthalate), (PET, intrinsic viscosity = 0.80 dL/g) and poly(butylene terephthalate), (PBT, intrinsic viscosity = 1.00 dL/g) were melt blended over the entire composition range using a counterrotating twin‐screw extruder. The mechanical, thermal, electrical, and rheological properties of the blends were studied. All of the blends showed higher impact properties than that of PET or PBT. The 50:50 blend composition exhibited the highest impact value. Other mechanical properties also showed similar trends for blends of this composition. The addition of PBT increased the processability of PET. Differential scanning calorimetry data showed the presence of both phases. For all blends, only a single glass‐transition temperature was observed. The melting characteristics of one phase were influenced by the presence of the other. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The surface tension of atactic polystyrene (PS), isotactic poly(propylene) (PP) and PS/PP‐blends, and additionally the interfacial tension between PP/PS have been measured in the temperature range between 200 and 280°C using the pendant drop method. Within the temperature range studied, the surface tension decreased linearly with increasing temperature for all systems whereas the surface tension of neat PP is approximately 7 mN/m smaller than the value of PS. The interfacial tension between PS and PP is in the range of approximately 4 mN/m and this indicates a strong incompatibility. It results a heterogeneous PP/PS blend morphology. A significant increase of the surface tension of the blends as a function of composition is observed only when the PS content exceeds 60 wt.‐%. Furthermore, microscopic observations indicate that even if the bulk matrix material is PS, a thin layer of PP can be detected by atomic force microscopy on the droplet surface used for surface tension measurements.  相似文献

We used a novel approach to prepare poly(propylene)–clay nanocomposite starting from pristine montmorillonite and reactive compatibilizer hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide. The nanocomposite structure was revealed by X‐ray diffraction and high‐resolution electronic microscopy. The thermal properties of the nanocomposite were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis. An increase of thermal stability was observed. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 89: 2586–2588, 2003  相似文献

In previous articles, we reported on a novel reactive extrusion process to obtain a compatibilized blend of polymer A and polymer B. It consisted in polymerizing the monomer of polymer A in the presence of polymer B. A fraction of the latter contained initiating sites from which the polymerization of monomer A took place. As such, both polymer A and a graft copolymer of polymer A and polymer B were formed in the process. That process was called in situ polymerization and in situ compatibilization of polymer blends. Its feasibility was illustrated for in situ polymerized and in situ compatibilized poly(propylene) and polyamide 6 (PP/PA6) blends. The latter were prepared by activated anionic polymerization of ?‐caprolactam (CL) in the presence of PP in a batch mixer and a twin‐screw extruder, respectively. A fraction of the PP contained isocyanate groups from which PA6 grafts were formed. Sodium caprolactam (NaCL) was used as the catalyst and a diisocyanate compound was used as the activator. In this study, we report on the effects of various parameters on the kinetics of the anionic polymerization of CL in the presence of PP. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Blends of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) with varying contents of plasticizer and finely ground powder of waste nitrile rubber rollers were prepared over a wide range of rubber contents through high‐temperature blending. The effects of rubber and plasticizer (dioctyl phthalate) content on the tensile strength, percentage elongation, impact properties, hardness, abrasion resistance, flexural crack resistance, limiting oxygen index (LOI), electrical properties, and breakdown voltage were studied. The percentage elongation, flexural crack resistance, and impact strength of blends increased considerably over those of PVC. The waste rubber had a plasticizing effect. Blends of waste plasticized PVC and waste nitrile rubber showed promising properties. The electrical properties and LOI decreased with increasing rubber and plasticizer content. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 91: 1552–1558, 2004  相似文献

The article presents results of studies on composites made from poly(propylene) (PP) modified with poly(aniline) (PANI) doped with dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DBSA) and chlorinated poly(propylene) (CPP). The volume resistivity of PP/CPP/PANI composites was detected, and the results show that the volume resistivity decreases with increasing CPP content, and there exists a minimum volume resistivity. Effects of CPP on the microstructure and crystalline structure of the PP/CPP/PANI composites and the relationship between the effects and the electric property were carefully analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD). The method that the specimens of SEM are polished is appropriate to investigate the morphology of conducting polymer composites. The obtained results illuminate that the area of conducting parts and insulating parts obtained from the digital analysis of the SEM image is obviously influenced by the CPP content, the parameters of the lamellar‐like structure are immediately related to CPP content and denote the dispersion of PANI‐DBSA, and the percent crystallinity and mean crystal size of PP are directly correlated with the CPP content. The increasing area of conducting parts, the increasement of layer distance, the decreasement of size and layer number of the lamellar‐like structure of PANI‐DBSA, and the increasement of the percent crystallinity and mean crystal size of PP are beneficial to the improvement of the conductive property of PP/CPP/PANI composites. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Extrusion flow experiments of linear and branched syndiotactic poly(propylene)s were carried out. The work was focused on flow instabilities. Ionized radiation was employed to induce long chain branching in linear samples. Sharkskin and melt fracture were postponed in the case of slightly long branched samples, which possess an enhanced melt elasticity compared to linear samples. For the most elastic samples the nature of the flow instability changed: sharkskin disappeared and melt fracture was observed instead. The correlation between sharkskin and melt strength results is discussed.

This paper analyzes the thermal and thermo‐oxidative degradation behavior, phase separation, melting, and crystallization of blends consisting of isotactic poly(propylene) (IPP) and poly(propylene) grafted with maleic anhydride (PP‐g‐MA). It has been established that, depending on the blend composition and crystallization/preparation procedure, the blends of IPP and PP‐g‐MA can either co‐crystallize or evidence phase separation. This conclusion has been attained by comparing the DSC results of crystallization under dynamic and isothermal conditions with X‐ray diffraction results. On the basis of the obtained results, the optimum mixing ratios have been established as 95–85 wt.‐% IPP/5–15 wt.‐% PP‐g‐MA. Thermo‐oxidative behavior has been studied by thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis.

The miscibility and crystallization behavior of poly(ethylene oxide)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PEO/PVA) blends were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and polarizing optical microscopy. Because the glass‐transition temperature of PVA was near the melting point of PEO crystalline, an uncommon DSC procedure was used to determine the glass‐transition temperature of the PVA‐rich phase. From the DSC and DMA results, two glass‐transition temperatures, which corresponded to the PEO‐rich phase and the PVA‐rich phase, were observed. It was an important criterion to indicate that a blend was immiscible. It was also found that the preparation method of samples influenced the morphology and crystallization behaviors of PEO/PVA blends. The domain size of the disperse phase (PVA‐rich) for the solution‐cast blends was much larger than that for the coprecipitated blends. The crystallinity, spherulitic morphology, and isothermal crystallization behavior of PEO in the solution‐cast blends were similar to those of the neat PEO. On the contrary, these properties in the coprecipitated blends were different from those of the neat PEO. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 92: 1562–1568, 2004  相似文献

Blends of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(ethylene octene) (POE) were prepared by melt blending with various amounts of trimethylolpropane triacylate (TMPTA). The mechanical properties, phase morphologies, and gel fractions at various absorbed doses of γ‐irradiation have been investigated. It was found that the toughness of blends was enhanced effectively after irradiation as well as the tensile properties. The elongation at break for all studied PET/POE blends (POE being up to 15 wt %) with 2 wt % TMPTA reached 250–400% at most absorbed doses of γ‐irradiation, approximately 50–80 times of those of untreated PET/POE blends. The impact strength of PET/POE (85/15 wt/wt) blends with 2 wt % TMPTA irradiated with as little as 30 kGy absorbed dose exceeded 17 kJ/m2, being approximately 3.4 times of those of untreated blends. The improvement of the mechanical properties was supported by the morphology changes. Scanning electron microscope images of fracture surfaces showed a smaller dispersed phase and more indistinct inter‐phase boundaries in the irradiated blends. This indicates increased compatibility of PET and POE in the PET/POE blends. The changes of the morphologies and the enhancement of the mechanical properties were ascribed to the enhanced inter‐phase boundaries by the formation of complex graft structures confirmed by the results of the gelation extraction and Fourier Transform Infrared analyses. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Different benzophenone‐type photoinitiators were photografted onto poly(propylene) (PP). The polymer surfaces were analyzed by means of contact angle measurements, UV spectroscopy, and FTIR‐ATR. The modified samples showed a better wettability and higher surface energies, increasing from 26 mN/m for pure PP to 36 mN/m for the modified samples. The UV spectrum of the modified PP films showed two absorption bands that could be related to the grafted initiator. The effect of irradiation time and photoinitiator concentration was investigated. Different acrylates were grafted efficiently onto the modified polymer surfaces. FTIR‐ATR and contact angle measurements confirmed the presence of the grafted chains. The surface energy of the grafted surfaces of samples increased to 70 mN/m, depending on the type of acrylate used. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 92: 2341–2350, 2004  相似文献

Poly(divinylbenzene) (poly(DVB)) microspheres with controllable pore structure were synthesized by suspension polymerization in the presence of toluene and low‐molecular weight poly(propylene) (PP) as coporogen. The weight fraction of PP in toluene varied from 0 to 20 wt %, and the feed ratio of coporogen and DVB was kept at 1/1 (vol/vol). Effects of PP weight fraction in coporogen on the specific surface area, the average pore size, the pore size distribution and the total pore volume of final microspheres were examined. As expected, poly(DVB) microspheres prepared with toluene as sole porogen had a high specific surface area (558 m2/g). Using mixtures of toluene and PP as coporogen, it was found that the specific surface area shifted higher values when low levels of PP (2.0–6.0 wt %) in toluene were used as coporogen. However, further increase of PP weight fraction in toluene resulted in progressive decline of the specific surface area. Hg intrusion/extrusion curves and N2 sorption isotherms implied caged pore structure with some small entrances. Furthermore, most of pore connectivity limitations may be eliminated when the weight fraction of PP in toluene exceeded 10.0 wt %. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献
