Poly(lactic acid) PLA was plasticized with low molecular weight poly(ethylene glycol) PEG‐200 to improve the ductility of PLA, while maintaining the plasticizer content at maximum 10 wt%. Low molecular weight of PEG enables increased miscibility with PLA and more efficient reduction of glass transition temperature (Tg). This effect is enhanced not only by the low molecular weight but also by its higher content. The tensile properties demonstrated that the addition of PEG‐200 to PLA led to an increase of elongation at break (>7000%), but a decrease of both tensile strength and tensile modulus. The plasticization of the PLA with PEG‐200 effectively lowers Tg as well as cold‐crystallization temperature, increasing with plasticizer content. SEM micrographs reveal plastic deformation and few long threads of a deformed material are discernible on the fracture surface. The use of low molecular weight PEG‐200 reduces the intermolecular force and increases the mobility of the polymeric chains, thereby improving the flexibility and plastic deformation of PLA. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nanocomposites of poly(lactide) (PLA) and the PLA plasticized with diglycerine tetraacetate (PL‐710) and ethylene glycol oligomer containing organo‐modified montmorillonites (ODA‐M and PGS‐M) by the protonated ammonium cations of octadecylamine and poly(ethylene glycol) stearylamine were prepared by melt intercalation method. In the X‐ray diffraction analysis, the PLA/ODA‐M and plasticized PLA/ODA‐M composites showed a clear enlargement of the difference of interlayer spacing between the composite and clay itself, indicating the formation of intercalated nanocomposite. However, a little enlargement of the interlayer spacing was observed for the PLA/PGS‐M and plasticized PLA/PGS‐M composites. From morphological studies using transmission electron microscopy, a finer dispersion of clay was observed for PLA/ODA‐M composite than PLA/PGS‐M composite and all the composites using the plasticized PLA. The PLA and PLA/PL‐710 composites containing ODA‐M showed a higher tensile strength and modulus than the corresponding composites with PGS‐M. The PLA/PL‐710 (10 wt %) composite containing ODA‐M showed considerably higher elongation at break than the pristine plasticized PLA, and had a comparable tensile modulus to pure PLA. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the composites decreased with increasing plasticizer. The addition of the clays did not cause a significant increase of Tg. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, melt intercalation method is applied to prepare poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)‐plasticized PLA nanocomposite films including 0, 3, and 5% organoclay (Cloisite 30B) using a laboratory scale compounder, which is connected to a microcast film device. To evaluate the nanomorphology and the dispersion state of the clays, X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are conducted. Tensile tests are performed to characterize the mechanical behavior of the films. Biodegradation rate is determined by degradation tests in composting medium. Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) is applied to observe the thermal behavior of the films. XRD and TEM show that the exfoliation predominantly occurrs in plasticized PLA nanocomposites, whereas unexfoliated agglomerates together with exfoliated clays are observed in the nonplasticized PLA. Tensile tests indicate that the addition of 3% clay to the neat‐PLA does not affect the strength; however, it enhances the modulus of the nanocomposites in comparison to neat‐PLA. Incorporation of 3% clay to the plasticized PLA improves the modulus with respect to PLA/PEG; on the other hand, the strain at break value is lowered ~ 40%. The increase in the rate of biodegradation in composting medium is found as in the order of PLA > PLA/PEG > 3% Clay/PLA/PEG > 5% Clay/PLA/PEG > 3% Clay/PLA. DSC analysis shows that the addition of 3% clay to the neat PLA results in an increase in Tg. The addition of 20% PEG as a plasticizer to the neat‐PLA decreases Tg about 30°C, however incorporation of clays increases Tg by 4°C for the plasticized PLA. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) has received great attention recently due to its good physical and mechanical properties such as high tensile strength and modulus, good processability and biodegradability. In this study, low molecular weight poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and epoxidized palm oil (EPO) were used as hybrid plasticizers to improve toughness and ductility of PLA. Using the solubility parameter, a tentative evaluation of the hybrid plasticizer that could act as the most effective plasticizer for PLA has been performed and the obtained results have been corroborated with the materials physical properties. Excellent plasticizing effect was obtained by hybrid plasticizer PEG:EPO with ratio 2:1. Addition of PEG:EPO (2:1) hybrid plasticizer to PLA shows a significant improvement of 12,402%, compared to neat PLA. The improvement in flexibility and decrease in rigidity for the plasticized PLA is well evidenced by lower glass transition temperature (Tg) and tensile modulus values. In relation to the thermal stability, a decrease in thermal properties of the hybrid plasticized PLA was observed due to the volatility of the plasticizers. PLA‐based nanocomposites filled with the commercial organomodified montmorillonite Dellite 43B (D43B) and containing acetyl tri‐n‐butyl citrate (ATBC) as plasticizer were prepared by extrusion in a pilot‐scale twin‐screw extruder and melt casted into flexible films. A preliminary investigation was carried out in a laboratory batch mixer by varying blending conditions and addition procedures of the components. Indeed, the method of addition of ATBC and D43B considerably affected thermo‐mechanical properties and morphology of the resultant nanocomposites. The simultaneous introduction of both ATBC and D43B during the extrusion process allowed producing clearly exfoliated nanocomposite materials with modulated mechanical and thermal properties. Moreover, rheological results, obtained during melt extrusion, assessed the processability of nanofilled‐plasticized PLA, making this simple procedure interesting in view of the industrial production of nanostructured biomaterials based on plasticized PLA. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Tri‐(butanediol‐monobutyrate) citrate (TBBC) as a new plasticizer for poly(lactic acid) (PLA) was synthesized via a two‐step esterification. The chemical structure of TBBC was characterized by 1H‐nuclear magnetic resonance. The studies on solubility parameters, transparence, and storage stability indicated the good miscibility between PLA and TBBC. The glass transition, crystallization, thermal, and mechanical properties of PLA plasticized by TBBC were evaluated. With an increase in TBBC content, the glass transition temperature (Tg), melting point (Tm), and the cold crystallization temperature (Tcc) of plasticized PLA gradually shifted to a lower temperature. The elongation at break and flexibility were greatly improved by the addition of TBBC. After 30 days of storage, PLA plasticized with up to 20 wt% of TBBC exhibited good storage stability and remained the original transparence and mechanical properties. The flexibility of PLA/TBBC films can be tuned by changing TBBC content. The corresponding crystalline morphology and structure were investigated by Polarizing optical microscope and X‐ray diffraction as well. This study revealed that TBBC was miscible with PLA and may therefore be a promising plasticizer for PLA‐based packaging materials. POLYM. ENG. Though glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) is a well‐known and promising energetic polymer, propellants based on it suffer from poor mechanical and low‐temperature properties. To overcome these problems, plasticized GAP‐based copolymeric binders were prepared and investigated through the incorporation of flexible‐structural polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polycaprolactone (PCL) into a binder recipe under a Desmodur N‐100 polyisocyanate (N‐100)/isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) (2 : 1, wt. ratio) mixed curative system. The nitrate esters (NEs) or GAP oligomer were used as energetic plasticizers at various ratios to the polymers. The GAP/PCL binders held the plasticizers much more than the GAP/PEG binders did. The glass transition temperatures (Tg) of segmented copolymeric binders were more dependent on the plasticizer level than the PEG or PCL content. The increase in the plasticizer content decreased the mechanical strength and modulus of binders, while the change of strain was modest. Finally, the NE plasticized GAP‐based solid propellants showed enhanced mechanical and thermal properties by the incorporation of PEG or PCL. The properties of GAP/PCL propellants were superior to those of GAP/PEG propellants.  相似文献

The effect of polyethylene glycol (PEG) on the mechanical and thermal properties of poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) blends was examined. Overall, it was found that PEG acted as an effective plasticizer for the PLA phase in these microphase‐separated blends, increasing the elongation at break in all blends and decreasing the Tg of the PLA phase. Significant effects on other properties were also observed. The tensile strength and Young's modulus both decreased with increasing PEG content in the blends. In contrast, the elongation at break increased with the addition of PEG, suggesting that PEG acted as a plasticizer in the polymer blends. Binary and ternary blends composed of poly(lactic acid) (PLA), starch, and poly(ethylene glycols) (PEGs) with different molecular weights (weight‐average molecular weights = 300, 2000, 4000, 6000, and 10, 000 g/mol) were prepared, and the plasticizing effect and miscibility of PEGs in poly(lactic acid)/starch (PTPS) or PLA were intensively studied. The results indicate that the PEGs were effective plasticizers for the PTPS blends. The small‐molecule plasticizers of PEG300 (i.e., the Mw of PEG was 300g/mol) and glycerol presented better plasticizing effects, whereas its migration and limited miscibility resulted in significant decreases in the water resistance and elongation at break. PEG2000, with a moderate molecular weight, was partially miscible in sample PTPS3; this led to better performance in water resistance and mechanical properties. For higher molecular weight PEG, its plasticization for both starch and PLA was depressed, and visible phase separation also occurred, especially for PTPS6. It was also found that the presence of PEG significantly decreased the glass‐transition temperature and accelerated the crystallization of the PLA matrix, depending on the PEG molecular weight and concentration. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Molecular mobility and physical ageing of amorphous plasticized polylactide (PLA) with two different contents of mesolactide are studied with the help of thermal analysis. Used plasticizers are acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC) and triacetin (TA), two molecules with established miscibility and plasticizing efficiency. Lower plasticizer permanence of TA compared with ATBC is found. The plasticizer molecules decreased the size of the cooperativity domains at the glass transition temperature Tg and likely in the glassy state by decreasing intermacromolecular interactions and notwithstanding the mesolactide content of PLA and the chemical identity of the plasticizer. The recovery function is given and shows a significant effect of the plasticizer on the physical ageing. The supplementary free volume brought by the plasticizer enhances molecular mobility in the glassy state and increases structural relaxation at one order of magnitude. The comparison between different plasticizers reveals that the structural relaxation is however independent from the type of plasticizer and the percentage of mesolactide in PLA. POLYM. ENG. Di(isononyl) cyclohexane‐1,2‐dicarboxylate (DINCH) was used as a new plasticizer for poly(lactic acid) (PLA), and the effects of DINCH and tributyl citrate ester (TBC) on the morphology, mechanical and thermal properties, and durability of PLA were compared. DINCH has limited compatibility with PLA, leading to PLA/DINCH blends with phase separation in which DINCH forms spherical dispersed phase. TBC is compatible with PLA and evenly distributed in PLA. Plasticized PLA with 10 and 20 phr DINCH have a constant glass transition temperature (Tg) of 50°C and are stiff materials with high elongation at break and impact strength. TBC could significantly decrease the Tg and increase the crystallinity of PLA, and PLA/TBC (100/20) blend is a soft material with a Tg of 24°C. The durability of plasticized PLA was characterized by weight loss measurement under water immersion, mechanical properties, and thermal analysis. The results reveal that PLA/DINCH blends have better water resistance and aging resistance properties than PLA/TBC blends, which is attributed to the relatively high hydrophobicity of DINCH and high Tg of PLA/DINCH blends. This study was aimed at the modulation of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) properties by the addition of both a low‐molecular‐weight plasticizer, acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC), and a biodegradable aliphatic–aromatic copolyester, poly(butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) (PBAT). PLA/PBAT, PLA/ATBC, and PLA/PBAT/ATBC mixtures with 10–35 wt % ATBC and/or PBAT were prepared in a discontinuous laboratory mixer, compression‐molded, and characterized by thermal, morphological, and mechanical tests to evaluate the effect of the concentration of either the plasticizer or copolyester on the final material flexibility. Materials with modulable properties, Young's modulus in the range 100–3000 MPa and elongation at break in the range 10–300%, were obtained. Moreover, thermal analysis showed a preferential solubilization of ATBC in the PBAT phase. Gas permeability tests were also performed to assess possible use in food packaging applications. The results are discussed with particular emphasis toward the effects of plasticization on physical blending in the determination of the phase morphology and final properties. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Citrate esters triethyl citrate, tributyl citrate, and acetyl tributyl citrate were used as plasticizers for amorphous poly(D,L ‐lactide) (PDLLA). The resultant compositions were analyzed by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, and tensile testing to investigate the properties of the blends. Glass transition temperatures (Tgs) obtained by DSC were also compared to theoretically calculated Tgs. Increasing plasticizer content decreased the resultant Tg of the blend with plasticizer efficiency enhanced as the molecular weight of the citrate ester increased. However, in blends with high plasticizer content, a lack of miscibility also occurred with increased molecular weight. Theoretical results were comparable with those obtained experimentally at compositions, which were miscible. Increasing plasticizer content increased the ductility and decreased the strength of the polymer. The addition of 10 wt % plasticizer to PDLLA decreased tensile strength by over 50% with the deterioration larger at higher concentrations of plasticizer. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. The blends of low molecular weight triacetin (TAC) and oligomeric poly(1,3‐butylene glycol adipate) (PBGA) were used as multiple plasticizers to lubricate poly(lactic acid) (PLA) in this study. The thermal and mechanical properties of plasticized polymers were investigated by means of dynamic mechanical analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to analyze the morphologies of the blends. Multiple plasticizers were effective in lowering the glass transition temperature (Tg) and the melting temperature (Tm) of PLA. Moreover, crystallinity of PLA increased with increasing the content of multiple plasticizers. Tensile strength of the blends decreased following the increasing of the plasticizers, but increased in elongation at break. AFM topographic images showed that the multiple plasticizers dispersed between interfibrillar regions. Moreover, the fibrillar crystallite formed the quasicrosslinkings, which is another cause for the increase in elongation at break. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. BACKGROUND: Amorphous poly(lactic acid) (PLA) was plasticized with two polyadipates with different molar masses. Some physical properties were studied over time to evaluate the stability of these blends. The aim of this study was to improve PLA ductility and consider the feasibility of its use in flexible films for food packaging. RESULTS: The addition of polyadipates caused a decrease of the glass transition temperature (Tg) and an increase of PLA chain mobility. Samples with Tg values above the storage temperature suffered physical ageing with a reduction in free volume. All the unaged blends were mainly amorphous, but samples with Tg below the storage temperature developed crystallinity during ageing leading to phase separation. Ductile properties of films improved with plasticizer content immediately after blending, but there was a deterioration in such properties upon ageing due to matrix densification and crystallization of PLA chains. CONCLUSION: PLA can be efficiently plasticized by polyadipates and the results have shown that some of the prepared films remain flexible with no phase separation after 150 days. The objectives of the presented work were to investigate films based on polylactic acid (PLA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) in order to improve ductility and weldability of PLA films. The effect of plasticizer amount on the thermal, rheological, and mechanical properties of PLA plasticized films was investigated. The PEG content does affect the glass transition and the cold crystallization temperature of PLA in blends, while the melting temperature was not affected by the addition of PEG. The complex viscosity of the neat PLA granules and of plasticized films showed strong temperature and angular velocity dependence. The Young's modulus and tensile strength of plasticized films were improved with increasing plasticizer concentration, while the elongation at break stays rather constant. Plasticized PLA films were furthermore heat welded. These investigations showed that plasticized PLA films can be welded by heat welding. Plasticization of semicrystalline poly(l-lactide) (PLA) with a new plasticizer - poly(propylene glycol) (PPG) is described. PLA was plasticized with PPG with nominal Mw of 425 g/mol (PPG4) and 1000 g/mol (PPG1) and crystallized. The plasticization decreased Tg, which was reflected in a lower yield stress and improved elongation at break. The crystallization in the blends was accompanied by a phase separation facilitated by an increase of plasticizer concentration in the amorphous phase and by annealing of blends at crystallization temperature. The ultimate properties of the blends with high plasticizer contents correlated with the acceleration of spherulite growth rate that reflected accumulation of plasticizer in front of growing spherulites causing weakness of interspherulitic boundaries. In PLA/PPG1 blends the phase separation was the most intense leading to the formation of PPG1 droplets, which facilitated plastic deformation of the blends that enabled to achieve the elongation at break of about 90-100% for 10 and 12.5 wt% PPG1 content in spite of relatively high Tg of PLA rich phase of the respective blends, 46.1-47.6 °C. Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), long known as a plasticizer for PLA, with nominal Mw of 600 g/mol, was also used to plasticize PLA for comparison.  相似文献

Plasticized poly(lactic acid) (PLA)‐based nanocomposites filled with graphene nanoplatelets (xGnP) and containing poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and epoxidized palm oil (EPO) with ratio 2 : 1 (2P : 1E) as hybrid plasticizer were prepared by melt blending method. The key objective is to take advantage of plasticization to increase the material ductility while preserving valuable stiffness, strength, and toughness via addition of xGnP. The tensile modulus of PLA/2P : 1E/0.1 wt % xGnP was substantially improved (30%) with strength and elasticity maintained, as compared to plasticized PLA. TGA analysis revealed that the xGnP was capable of acting as barrier to reduce thermal diffusion across the plasticized PLA matrix, and thus enhanced thermal stability of the plasticized PLA. Incorporation of xGnP also enhanced antimicrobial activity of nanocomposites toward Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus, and Listeria monocytogenes. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The objective of this work is to get further knowledge on the external plasticization mechanisms of melt extruded polyhydroxyl‐3‐butyrate‐co?3‐valerate (PHBV) when combined with wheat straw fibers (WSF). Different types of biodegradable substances, all authorized for food contact according to the European regulation, i.e., acetyltributyl citrate (ATBC), glycerol triacetate (GTA) and (PEG) at different molecular weights, were tested at different percentages (5, 10 and 20 wt %). Thermal and mechanical characterization of PHBV/plasticizer blends showed that a significant plasticizing effect was obtained using hydrophobic substances such as ATBC and GTA, with an increase of the elongation at break from 1.8% up to about 6% for an additive content of 10 wt %. However, the incorporation of WSF in plasticized PHBV led to a dramatic decrease in the elongation at break of composites, neutralizing the increase of this parameter by the addition of the plasticizers. The stress at break of plasticized films was also significantly decreased by the introduction of fibers. Such a loss of ductility was mainly explained by the occurrence of microscopic defects in the materials induced by the presence of fibers and to a poor adhesion at the fiber/matrix interface. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(lactide) (PLA) is rapidly gaining interest as a biodegradable thermoplastic for general usage in degradable disposables. To improve mechanical properties, a PLA with low stereoregularity was blended with polyethylene glycol (PEG). Blends with up to 30 wt% PEG were miscible at ambient temperature. Blending with PEG significantly decreased the Tg, decreased the modulus and increased the fracture strain of PLA. However, the PLA/PEG 70/30 blend became increasingly rigid over time at ambient conditions. The mechanism of aging primarily under ambient conditions of temperature and humidity was studied. Changes in mechanical properties, thermal transitions and solid state morphology were examined over time. Aging was caused by slow crystallization of PEG. Crystallization of PEG depleted the amorphous phase of PEG and gradually increased the Tg. As Tg approached the aging temperature, reduced molecular diffusivity slowed the crystallization rate dramatically. Aging essentially ceased when Tg of the amorphous phase reached the aging temperature. The increase in matrix Tg and the reinforcing effect of the crystals produced a change in mechanical properties from elastomer-like to thermoplastic-like.  相似文献
