Two acidified sodium chlorite postmilking teat disinfectants were evaluated for efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus agalactiae by using National Mastitis Council experimental challenge procedures. The effect of these teat dips on teat skin and teat end condition was also determined. Both dips contained 0.32% sodium chlorite, 1.32% lactic, and 2.5% glycerin. Dips differed in the amount of sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (0.53 or 0.27%) added as a surfactant. Both dips significantly reduced new intramammary infection (IMI) rates compared with undipped controls. The dip containing 0.53% dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid reduced new IMI by Staph. aureus by 72% and Strep. agalactiae by 75%. The dip containing 0.27% dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid reduced new IMI by Staph. aureus by 100% and by Strep. agalactiae by 88%. Changes in teat skin and teat end condition for treatment and control groups varied in parallel over time. Teats treated with either teat dip had higher mean teat skin and teat end scores than control teats at some weeks. However, teat skin and teat end condition did not tend to change from the start to the completion of the trial. Application of the two new postmilking teat dips was effective in reducing new IMI from contagious mastitis pathogens. (Key words: teat dip, contagious mastitis, chlorous acid)  相似文献

We evaluated the effectiveness of a 1.6% phenol-based teat dip using both a teat skin assay and natural exposure field trial. A teat skin assay was conducted to ascertain the concentration of phenol + phenate to be used in the field study. One percent and 0.5% iodine, and 0.5, 1.1, and 1.6% phenol + phenate were compared using Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Logarithmic reductions for S. aureus were 2.2 and 2.8 for 0.5 and 1% iodine, and 1.3, 2.1, and 2.8 for 0.5, 1.1, and 1.6% phenol + phenate, respectively. Logarithmic reductions for E. coli were 3.3 and 3.8 for 0.5 and 1% iodine, and 1.2, 1.9, and 2.6 for 0.5, 1.1, and 1.6% phenol + phenate, respectively. A concentration of 1.6% phenol + phenate was chosen as experimental teat dip, and 0.5% iodine served as control. The field study was conducted at Beltsville (n = 185) and Clarksville (n = 100) dairy herds using a split herd design. Teat dips were used premilking and postmilking for 12 mo. The number of new intramammary infections (IMI) for the Beltsville herd in iodine and phenol + phenate teat dipped cows were: 29 and 35 for major pathogens, and 81 and 72, for minor pathogens. For the Clarksville herd, number of new intramammary infections in iodine and phenol + phenate teat dipped cows was 9 and 10 for major pathogens, and 50 and 60 for minor pathogens. Rates of IMI per quarter day per lactation were not different for either herd or when herd data were combined. The number of clinical mastitis cases per 100 cows per month were similar in both treatments. The incidences of new IMI and clinical mastitis were similar using both dips.  相似文献

The efficacy of 2 iodine barrier teat dips was compared with a conventional iodine postmilking teat dip. The products were evaluated using a natural exposure trial on a 250-cow dairy based on the National Mastitis Council guidelines. Bacteriological samples were taken every 2 wk over 6 mo. All dips contained 1.0% available iodine and high levels of free iodine for germicidal efficacy. Barrier 1 was an experimental dip containing 14 to 20 ppm of free iodine, barrier 2 contained 8 to 14 ppm of free iodine, and the nonbarrier control contained 12 to 16 ppm of free iodine. The average free iodine for barrier 1 and barrier 2 combined was 14 ppm, which was equal to the average free iodine for the positive control. A 21% reduction of new intramammary infections (IMI) was observed for the 2 barrier dips combined when compared with the nonbarrier control. A significant reduction of 38% was observed for the clinical infection rate for barrier 1 when compared with barrier 2; however, barrier 1 did not significantly reduce the subclinical IMI when compared with barrier 2. Barrier 1 significantly reduced the combined clinical and subclinical IMI by 24% when compared with the positive control. The skin condition showed slight variation among the dips over the course of the trial, but no difference was observed at the end of the trial. Barrier 1, with the highest concentration of free iodine, gave the best efficacy results of all 3 dips.  相似文献

Two postmilking teat dips containing .5 and 1% iodine were evaluated for approximately 8 mo under conditions of natural exposure to mastitis pathogens on four commercial dairy farms. In the two herds using .5% iodophor, incidence of intramammary infection with Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus agalactiae was reduced 68.3 and 46.2%, respectively. When numbers of new infections with both pathogens were combined, efficacy for the .5% iodophor was 62.3%. In the two herds using 1% iodophor, incidence of intramammary infection with Staph. aureus and Strep. agalactiae was reduced 52.4 and 70.7%, respectively. When numbers of new infections with both pathogens were combined, efficacy for the 1% iodophor was 64.3%. Efficacy of teat dips was variable against coagulase-negative staphylococci and Corynebacterium bovis.  相似文献

A trial was conducted for 12 months in a herd of 120 Holstein cows in order to determine the efficacy of a teat disinfectant, which contained a phenolic combination, for the prevention of bovine intramammary infections during lactation. Postmilking teat disinfection was compared to a negative control using a split-udder experimental design. The percentage of quarters newly infected by mastitis pathogens was 45% lower in mammary glands with teats that had been dipped in the experimental teat disinfectant after milking than it was in undipped controls. New infections caused by Streptococcus uberis, Staphylococcus aureus, coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species, and Corynebacterium bovis were significantly lower in mammary glands with teats that had been dipped in the experimental teat disinfectant than in undipped controls. No statistical differences in the incidence of clinical mastitis between treatment groups were observed. No irritation or chapping of teats dipped in the experimental teat disinfectant were observed. The results of this study suggest that the experimental teat disinfectant containing a phenolic combination is an effective postmilking teat disinfectant for use in the prevention of new intramammary infections by both contagious and environmental mastitis pathogens.  相似文献

Effective postmilking teat dip products with lower iodine concentrations are being formulated as concern increases about iodine residues in milk. Increased free iodine concentration with greater germicidal activity in teat dip products is also possible with special formulation procedures. Low iodine concentration dips are cheaper and have reduced teat irritation. A concentrated iodine teat dip containing .18% iodine and 8 ppm free iodine upon dilution was evaluated under experimental bacterial challenge to determine efficacy for prevention of new intramammary infections. The undiluted product also contained 15% collagen protein emollient as a teat skin conditioner. Efficacy of the teat dip was 93.6 and 51. 7% for Staphylococcus aureus (Newbould 305) and Streptococcus agalactiae (McDonald 44). No adverse effects of the dip on teat skin were noted.  相似文献

The use of teat dips is one of the most effective strategies to control mastitis by preventing new intramammary infections. Reducing bacterial load on teat skin helps control the spread of pathogens and spoilage and improves the quality of milk. The objective of this study was to evaluate the reduction of bacterial populations through the application of bacteriocin-based teat formulas. Teats of 12 Holstein cows received 2 different concentrations of bactofencin A, nisin, and reuterin alone or in combination, as well as iodine (positive control) and saline (negative control). Teat swabs were collected before and after application of teat formulas and analyzed for staphylococci, streptococci, and total bacteria counts. There were no differences for staphylococci, streptococci, and total bacterial counts for samples collected before application throughout the entire experiment. Reuterin-low and reuterin-high treatments reduced total bacterial count by 0.47 and 0.36 logs, respectively, whereas bactofencin A had no effect on any tested bacterial groups. Nisin-low treatment reduced staphylococci, streptococci, and total bacterial counts by 0.47, 0.30 and 0.50 logs, respectively. Nisin-high treatment resulted in 0.50, 0.50, and 0.47 log reduction for staphylococci, streptococci, and total bacterial counts. The bacteriocin consortium showed the highest reduction rates with 0.91, 0.54, and 0.90 log reductions obtained for staphylococci, streptococci, and total bacteria counts, respectively, for the low-concentration consortium. Similarly, the high-concentration consortium showed reduction rates with 0.95, 0.60, and 0.82 log reductions obtained for staphylococci, streptococci, and total bacteria counts, respectively. Thus, nisin and the bacteriocin consortium showed the most promise as a teat disinfectant by reducing staphylococci, streptococci, and total bacteria counts.  相似文献

The objective of mastitis control during the dry period is to have as few infected quarters as possible at calving. This depends on enhancing elimination of infections present at drying off and on reducing the new infection rate during the dry period; prevention of new infection appears to offer greater long-term benefits. Incidence of new infection is high in the dry period with periods of high susceptibility shortly after dry off and again prepartum. Pathogens of both contagious and environmental origin cause new dry period infections; however, exposure to contagious pathogens probably decreases with cessation of regular milking, whereas exposure to environmental pathogens continues throughout the dry period. Varying susceptibility over the dry period may be affected by bacterial loads on the teat skin, characteristics of the teat canal, and internal protective mechanisms. At present, antibiotic therapy at the end of lactation is the most effective means of eliminating existing infections and preventing new infections. Although there are reasons to prefer selective therapy, present evidence favors a recommendation for treatment of all cows at the time of drying off. A shortcoming of present therapy regimens for the dry period is that they provide little or no protective effect against new infection prepartum. Other mastitis control methods and management practices have not been shown conclusively to reduce new dry period infections. However, it appears that reduction of exposure to environmental pathogens during dry period should be recommended. More effective means to reduce new infections in the prepartum period are needed.  相似文献

Mastitis is the most frequent disease of dairy cows and has well-recognized detrimental effects on animal wellbeing and dairy farm profitability. Since the beginning of modern dairy farming, producers have sought effective methods to minimize the occurrence of mastitis in their herds. The objective of this paper is to review and highlight important advances in detection, management, and prevention of mastitis that have occurred since the first volume of the Journal of Dairy Science was published in 1917. Initial research efforts were directed at understanding the nature of pathogenic bacteria that were responsible for most intramammary infections. For decades, researchers worked to identify effective strategies to control mastitis caused by Streptococcus agalactiae and Staphylococcus aureus. To develop successful control programs, mastitis workers first had to identify mechanisms of infection, define the clinical and subclinical states of the disease, discover appropriate screening tests, determine likely points of exposure, identify pathogen-specific characteristics, and develop effective procedures for machine milking. Pioneering researchers eventually recognized that mastitis control was based on preventing new infections from occurring in healthy cows and reducing the duration that cows remained infected. Development of a control program that incorporated post-milking teat dipping, hygienic milking procedures, and strategic use of antibiotic therapy at dry-off resulted in widespread control of contagious pathogens. As herd management changed, researchers were tasked with defining control of mastitis caused by opportunistic pathogens originating from environmental sources. As mastitis pathogens have evolved, researchers have sought to define antimicrobial usage that will maintain animal wellbeing while minimizing unnecessary usage. During the last century, tremendous significant advances in mastitis control have been made but changing herd structure and more rigorous processor standards ensure that mastitis will remain an important subject focus of future research.  相似文献

An experimental teat dip containing 0.5% hydrogen peroxide as the active ingredient was compared with a teat disinfectant also containing 0.5% hydrogen peroxide that is commercially available throughout North America. The study was conducted under conditions of experimental challenge with a positive control following the guidelines recommended by the National Mastitis Council. The efficacy of the test product and the positive control product were compared in 45 cows, with 89 total teats receiving each product after milking during a 10-wk study period. There was no significant difference between the experimental hydrogen peroxide product and the positive control in new intramammary infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus (27.0 and 18.0% in the treatment groups, respectively). Additionally, there was no significant difference between the experimental product (6.7%) and the positive control groups (4.5%) in new intramammary infections caused by Streptococcus agalactiae. Traditional analysis of teat skin condition changes supported improved teat skin condition with the test disinfectant. After accounting for the correlation of teats within cow, significant differences were also observed between the treatment groups for teat skin condition. The experimental hydrogen peroxide-based teat disinfectant provided efficacy similar to that of the positive control teat disinfectant, with significant improvement in teat skin condition and no adverse effects on teat end condition.  相似文献

The abilities of common postmilking teat disinfectant solutions and a teat skin ointment to retard Staphylococcus aureus colonization and promote healing of chapped skin were studied. Ten Holstein cows, free of S. aureus intramammary infections and mammary epidermal colonization, were used. All teats were experimentally chapped with 1N sodium hydroxide and dipped in S. aureus broth culture of 5 x 10(6) cfu/ml after three consecutive milkings. Postmilking teat disinfectant treatments were applied, starting after the second application of S. aureus broth culture, and were continued for the next 19 milkings. Quarters of each cow received one of the following postmilking teat treatments: 1% iodine plus 10% glycerin solution; .5% chlorhexidine plus 4.87% glycerin solution; 1% chlorhexidine ointment; and no postmilking treatment. After milking and before treatment application, samples of skin swabbings of the teat end and teat side and samples of milk were collected. Daily teat skin chapping visual scores were made to assess chapping and healing. Teat skin chapping decreased with time, and the decline was similar among treatments. The concentration of S. aureus recovered from teat skin swabbing solutions decreased over time. Staphylococcus aureus were recovered at significantly lower concentrations from swabbing solutions of teats that were dipped with iodine and chlorhexidine solutions as compared with untreated teats. Staphylococcus aureus was in marginally higher concentrations on ointment-treated teats than on dipped teats. Results indicate the importance of using postmilking teat dips on chapped teats and suggest no advantage in applying a disinfectant ointment to chapped teats to reduce S. aureus colonization and improve skin healing.  相似文献

We tested two postmilking teat dips for efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus agalactiae using experimental challenge procedures recommended by the National Mastitis Council. The chlorine dioxide teat dip that contained 0.7% sodium chlorite reduced the number of new intramammary infections (IMI) caused by Staph. aureus by 86.6% and reduced new IMI caused by Strep. agalactiae by 88.4%. The 0.5% iodophor teat dip reduced the number of new IMI caused by Staph. aureus by 92.9% and reduced the number of new IMI caused by Strep. agalactiae by 43.4%. Teat skin and teat end conditions were evaluated before and after the study, and no deleterious effects were noted among dipped quarters compared with undipped control quarters for either teat dip.  相似文献

A 1.0% iodophore teat disinfectant (Full-Bac) was evaluated in comparison with a positive control (Bovadine), a commercially available 1.0% iodophore teat disinfectant. The study was conducted under conditions of experimental challenge, following the guidelines recommended by the National Mastitis Council. The test product and a positive control were compared in 41 cows, with 82 teats receiving each product at milking, during a 10-wk study period. There were no differences between the test product and the positive control in new intramammary infections due to Staphylococcus aureus, which averaged 13.4% in each of the 2 treatment groups. Additionally, no statistical difference was seen between the test product and positive control in new intramammary infections by Streptococcus agalactiae, which averaged 8.5 and 6.1% for the Full-Bac and Bovadine groups, respectively. Teat skin and teat end condition scores were statistically evaluated at wk 1, 5, and 9 of the study, and no significant differences were observed between the treatment groups. The test teat disinfectant provided similar germicidal activity to that of the positive control teat disinfectant with no adverse effects on teat skin or teat end condition during the warm-season study period.  相似文献

A teat disinfectant containing a phenolic combination was evaluated in a natural exposure study in two dairy research herds. Premilking teat disinfection was compared with a negative control using a split-udder experimental design. In both herds, premilking and postmilking teat disinfections with the phenolic combination were significantly more effective in preventing new intramammary infection (IMI) than was postmilking teat disinfection only. Clinical mastitis and new IMI by Streptococcus uberis, Streptococcus dysgalactiae, Gram-negative pathogens, and coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species were significantly lower in quarters of cows with teats predipped and postdipped than in quarters with teats postdipped only. No chapping or teat skin irritation was observed. Premilking teat disinfection with the phenolic combination in association with good udder preparation and postmilking teat disinfection can further reduce the occurrence of new IMI by numerous mastitis pathogens during lactation.  相似文献

Klebsiella pneumoniae is an opportunistic and environmental mastitis-causing pathogen, with potential for contagious transmission. Repetitive element sequence-based PCR was used to determine genetic diversity and explore potential transmission and reservoirs for mastitis caused by K. pneumoniae on 2 large Chinese dairy farms. A total of 1,354 samples was collected from the 2 dairy farms, including milk samples from cows with subclinical and clinical mastitis, bedding, feces, feed, teat skin, and milking liners. Environmental samples were collected from all barns and milking parlors and extramammary samples from randomly selected dairy cows on both farms. In total, 272 and 93 K. pneumoniae isolates were obtained from Farms A and B, respectively (with ~8K and 2K lactating cows, respectively). Isolation rates from clinical mastitis (CM), subclinical mastitis (SCM), and environmental or extramammary samples were 34, 23 and 37%, respectively for Farm A and 42, 3, and 34% for Farm B. The K. pneumoniae isolated from CM milk and extramammary or environmental sources had high genetic diversity (index of diversity >90%) on the 2 farms and from SCM on Farm A. However, on Farm B, 9 SCM isolates were classified as 2 genotypes, resulting in a relatively low index of diversity (Simpson's index of diversity = 0.39; 95% CI = 0.08–0.70). Genotypes of K. pneumoniae causing mastitis were commonly detected in feces, bedding, and milking liners (Farm A), or from teat skin, sawdust bedding, and feed (Farm B). Based on its high level of genetic diversity, we inferred K. pneumoniae was an opportunistic and environmental pathogen causing outbreaks of CM on these 2 large Chinese dairy farms. Nevertheless, that only a few genotypes caused SCM implied some strains had increased udder adaptability and a contagious nature or a common extramammary source. Finally, control of intramammary infections caused by K. pneumoniae on large Chinese dairy farms must consider farm-level predictors, as the 2 outbreaks had distinct potential environmental sources of infection.  相似文献

The prevention of mastitis is the most important part of a mastitis control programme. Postmilking disinfection is considered the most effective procedure for preventing new intramammary infections in dairy herds. This article reviews the different protocols used to evaluate the efficacy of teat disinfectant products. These protocols include experimental challenge, natural exposure and excised teat, along with agar diffusion assays and teat swabbing. The experimental designs, limitations, positive and negative aspects of each protocol were compared and discussed throughout this article.  相似文献

An experimental challenge trial was performed according to the guidelines recommended by the National Mastitis Council (NMC). A 0.1% iodine teat dip (Quartermate with I-Tech) was examined. This product gave an 87.9% reduction of new intramammary infections with Staphylococcus aureus and a 66.5% reduction for Streptococcus agalactiae compared with a negative control. An experimental challenge trial was performed against Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus agalactiae following the procedures recommended by the National Mastitis Council. The efficacy of two teat dips, product 1 (Bovadine with I-Tech II) and product 2 (Bovadine with I-Tech, used as a positive control), was determined. Both teat dips contain 1% iodine and 10% glycerin. Product 1 established an 89.7% reduction in infections against Staph. aureus and 73.1% reduction in infections against Strep. agalactiae. Product 2 demonstrated an 86.2% reduction in infections against Staph. aureus and 78.4% reduction in infections against Strep. agalactiae. Teat skin and teat ends were evaluated before and after the trial. No significant change in teat condition was observed for either product.  相似文献

A postmilking teat dip containing chlorous acid-chlorine dioxide was evaluated by experimental challenge and in two herds under natural exposure. The test product had an efficacy of 78.9% against Staphylococcus aureus and 52.5% against Streptococcus agalactiae in the experimental challenge trial. The product was compared with a 1% iodine product in a 15-mo natural exposure study. Post-dipping with chlorous acid-chlorine dioxide reduced incidence of udder infection by major mastitis pathogens 36.1% when data were combined from the two herds. The 1% iodine and the chlorous acid-chlorine dioxide products were not equivalent for major mastitis pathogens; the test product was more effective. Incidence of udder infection by environmental mastitis pathogens was reduced 36.8% in both herds combined. Efficacy of the two teat dips was equivalent for environmental pathogens.  相似文献

Efficacy of an iodine backflush system for reducing new intramammary infection was tested in two 11-wk trials. Forty cows in each trial were paired by breed, age, stage of lactation, and intramammary infection status. Each pair was assigned randomly either to a group milked with clusters that were reverse flushed with water, 25 ppm iodine, water and air or to a group milked with clusters receiving no backflush treatment between cows. Backflushing clusters reduced infections caused by Corynebacterium bovis and coagulase-positive staphylococci in both trials. However, backflushing clusters produced no clear advantage for reducing new infections with coagulase-negative staphylococci, Gram-negative bacilli, or streptococci (species other than Streptococcus agalactiae). No differences in somatic cell counts between experimental groups were observed. Teat cup liners and teat ends were swabbed after 120 and 1200 milkings/liner. Total microbial counts were significantly greater for liners that were not backflushed than from backflushed liners at each swabbing. However, no differences were significant between groups for mean teat end microbial counts in either trial.  相似文献
