The American Psychological Association's Visiting Scientist Program has now completed its twelfth and final year of operation as a National Science Foundation-sponsored activity. The APA is planning to continue the program under the auspices of the Educational Affairs Office while seeking alternate funding. As in the past, the Visiting Scientist Program provided colleges and small universities with visits from eminent psychologists who offered their services as either scientific lecturers or educational consultants. Over 1,000 such visits have been made to educational institutions across the United States, 84 of which were made during 1971-1972. Throughout its existence the program has maintained the following objectives: (a) to stimulate interest in the scientific aspects of psychology at the collegiate level; (6) to present some of the new developments in psychological research and application; (c) to provide psychology departments with expert consultation regarding curricula, laboratories, staffing, programs, and procedures; (d) to acquaint students with the opportunities for advanced study and scientific and professional careers in psychology, including the teaching of psychology. For the last several years a special effort has been made to include psychologists and institutions which would serve as representatives of minority groups. This year's participants included 12 black psychologists, 9 women psychologists, and 1 Indian psychologist; 14 black institutions, and 2 women's colleges. The reports of the visits were very favorable, and the Educational Affairs Office would like to express its appreciation to all of those who contributed to the success of this year's program. Notes that the American Psychological Association's Visiting Scientist Program has now completed its fifteenth and last year of operation. Support for the program was provided from contributions from the institutions visited. Because the program is not self-supporting and is no longer receiving funds from the American Psychological Foundation or the American Psychological Association, the program terminates this year. The reports of the visits were very favorable, and the Educational Affairs Office would like to express its appreciation to all of those who contributed to the success of this year's program. A list of institutions and visiting psychologists is provided. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

The NSF-sponsored Visiting Scientist Program has just completed 11 years of operation under the auspices of the Educational Affairs Office of APA. During this time, 925 visits have been made to educational institutions in all states except Wyoming; 74 of these visits were made during 1970-1971. This year, 32 of these visits were made by black psychologists to black institutions. The visit assignments to black educational institutions were made with the assistance of the Association of Black Psychologists and their regional coordinators. The remaining 42 visits were conducted in the usual manner of the Visiting Scientist Program. The primary focus, once again, was on institutions that do not have graduate programs. The Educational Affairs Office would like to express its appreciation to all of those who contributed to the success of the Program. This discusses the seventh year of the APA'S Visiting Scientist Program supported by the National Science Foundation. The general purpose and procedures have been described in a series of six earlier reports (Ross, 1961, 1962, 1964, 196Sa, 1965b, 1966). The program has the following objectives: (a) to stimulate interest in the scientific aspects of psychology at the collegiate level; (6) to present some of the frontiers of psychological research and application to small institutions where psychology is not now fully developed; (c1) to provide an opportunity to administrative officers, staff members, and students at colleges to consult with leaders in psychological science; and (d) to stimulate students to consider careers in psychology, including the teaching of psychology. The Visiting Psychologist Program, sponsored by the American Psychological Association and supported by the National Institute of Mental Health, has two major goals: (1) to provide information on recent developments in the field to psychologists in service settings, and (2) to provide opportunities to visit and learn about field centers for psychologists with significant training, service, and research responsibilities. The specific goals of the program are to disseminate up-to-date knowledge of recent research findings and to demonstrate innovations in psychological procedures and techniques. The Visiting Psychologist Program, under which psychologists from universities and other training and service centers visit selected field settings, involves the careful selection of visiting psychologists who have something new and substantial to transmit to the field, and the determination of representative settings to be visited that do not have ready access to significant recent developments. Main topics discussed in this article include the following: (1) how the program functions; (2) selection of visiting psychologists; (3) selection of agencies; and (4) how to apply. The NIMH-sponsored Visiting Psychologist Program has completed its seventh year of operation. This program is designed to facilitate the dissemination of current knowledge generated in recent research findings and to provide for the demonstration of innovations in psychological research to mental health professionals. The program attempts to reach practitioners in service settings by offering consultation, lectures, and demonstrations by psychologists who are themselves significantly involved in research, training, and delivery of services. During the 1973-1974 program year, 49 agencies were visited, of which 38 were newly selected agencies and 11 were return visits to agencies visited the previous year. Forty-eight psychologists participated as visitors in the program. Agencies that received initial visits are listed, with their Visiting Psychologists, in Table 1. Agencies and Visiting Psychologists involved in return visits are listed in Table 2. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

This article describes the awards and small-grants programs of the American Psychological Foundation (APF), which was established in 1953 to receive gifts from psychologists who wish to contribute to the advancement of psychology as a science and a profession in the service of knowledge and the welfare of people. Through its awards program, the Foundation honors annually a senior psychologist who in his or her career has made distinguished contributions to research and scholarship (the Gold Medal Award), and it also recognizes outstanding achievements in teaching and in interpreting psychology in the public media (books, radio, magazines, newspapers, television). Through its small grants program, the APF supports activities of importance to psychology that would otherwise go unfunded. The Foundation's program depends on the concern and generosity of psychologists. Enclosed are a list of the names of all whose contributions to the APF were received in 1977. Notes that the 1967-68 academic year was the eighth year of APA's Visiting Scientist Program. The program is supported by the National Science Foundation. Although the goals of the program and the procedures for carrying it out are much the same as in previous years, some changes were made in the program this year, which are outlined. The institutions and visitors are listed in Table 1. Psychologists who served as visitors are thanked for their services; their effectiveness and the effectiveness of the program through the years is attested to by the vast number of positive comments received from visited institutions. The 1964-65 academic year was the fifth year of the Visiting Scientist Program supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The general purposes and procedures have been described in a series of four earlier reports (Ross, 1961, 1962, 1964, 1965), but the objectives of the program are reviewed here. The second program to be reported is a small program which we call the International Scientist Program, which also is in its fifth year--and NSF is closing out this program by April 1, 1966. The previous reports have described the operation and listed the visitors. Included in this article is a list of the colleges visited in the 1964-65 APA Visiting Scientist Program. Rehabilitation psychology, Division 22 of the American Psychological Association, has successfully completed a program for defining excellence among rehabilitation psychologists. This program is certified under the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) and awards a diplomate based upon a thorough examination of education and experience, and the successful passing of a rigorous examination. Excellence in rehabilitation psychology is characterized by a very broad educational base, as well as a training base which includes more than a casual acquaintance with information from literally hundreds of areas of life. This very broad-based education and training is applied to a highly specific population of persons requiring and seeking rehabilitation. The diplomate in rehabilitation psychology marks a milestone in providing health service providers with highly trained and credentialed psychologists.
