Pilot-symbol aided coherent M-ary PSK modems in digital cellular mobile radio systems are analyzed theoretically. The error-floors caused by the Doppler spread in a fast fading channel are removed in both flat and selective fading channels. However, the error-floors caused by the delay spread are lower-bounded by those that exist in the ideal coherent detection. The systems are modeled as frequency-selective fast Rayleigh fading channels, corrupted by co-channel interference (CCI) and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). In the proposed scheme, pilot symbols are inserted periodically to monitor the channel characteristics. The fading processes experienced by the pilot symbols are used to estimate those suffered by the data symbols using interpolation or filtering. The estimated fade characteristics are used to compensate the random phase variation caused by the Doppler spread, so that the signals can be demodulated coherently. The theoretical performances of the fade compensated coherent modems are evaluated. The results show that the fade compensated coherent demodulation with the least redundancy achieves the same performance as the ideal differential detection in a fading channel. The performance approaches that of the ideal coherent demodulation as more redundancy is allowed. The pilot-symbol-insertion (PSI) scheme is also applicable to M-ary QAM modems and Rician channels. It has been revealed that direct sequence code-division multiple access (DS-CDMA) can achieve a good bit-error rate (BER) performance, comparable to multicarrier CDMA (MC-CDMA), by using coherent frequency-domain equalization (FDE) instead of coherent Rake combining. However, coherent FDE requires accurate channel estimation. Pilot-assisted channel estimation is a practical solution, but its accuracy is sensitive to the Doppler spread. In this paper, a frequency-domain differential encoding and detection scheme is proposed for a DS-CDMA mobile radio. Joint frequency-domain differential detection and equalization (FDDDE) based on minimum mean-square error (MMSE) criterion is presented, where a simple decision feedback filter is used to provide a reliable reference signal for MMSE-FDDDE. Also presented is an approximate BER analysis. It is confirmed by both approximate BER analysis and computer simulation that MMSE-FDDDE provides good BER performance close to the coherent MMSE-FDE and shows high robustness against the Doppler spread; it outperforms coherent MMSE-FDE for large Doppler spreads. The proposed MMSE-FDDDE can also be applied to MC-CDMA. A performance comparison between uncoded DS- and MC-CDMA shows that DS-CDMA with MMSE-FDDDE achieves better BER performance than MC-CDMA with MMSE-FDDDE for small spreading factors.  相似文献

Linearly time-varying fading models are used to investigate differential detection of PSK signals transmitted over frequency-flat fading channels. The structure of the optimal differential PSK detector is derived and an analytical technique is developed to compute its error performance. Multipath fading severely limits the performances of conventional code division multiple-access (CDMA) systems. Since every signal passes through an independent frequency-selective fading channel, even modest cross-correlations among signature sequences may induce severe near-far effects in a central multiuser receiver. This paper presents a systematic approach to the detection problem in CDMA frequency-selective fading channels and proposes a low complexity linear multiuser receiver, which eliminates fading induced near-far problem.We initially analyze an optimal multiuser detector, consisting of a bank of RAKE filters followed by a dynamic programming algorithm and evaluate its performance through error probability bounds. The concepts of error sequence decomposition and asymptotic multiuser efficiency, used to characterize the optimal receiver performance, are extended to multipath fading channels.The complexity of the optimal detector motivates the work on a near-far resistant, low complexity decorrelating multiuser detector, which exploits multipath diversity by using a multipath decorrelating filter followed by maximal-ratio combining. Analytic expressions for error probability and asymptotic multiuser efficiency of the suboptimal receiver are derived that include the effects of multipath fading, multiple-access interference and signature sequences correlation on the receiver's performance.The results indicate that multiuser detectors not only alleviate the near-far problem but approach single-user RAKE performance, while preserving the multipath diversity gain. A new scheme of fractional-bit differential detection of minimum shift keying (MSK) is proposed. This technique is aimed at reducing timing fluctuation of eye patterns, which is found to be a cause of abnormally long burst errors in a frequency-selective fading channel. We have confirmed in a detailed laboratory experiment that such long-burst errors can be eliminated by employing a differential delay shorter than one-bit interval, thereby yielding remarkable improvement in the measured average bit error rates. The result, in a way, highlights the influence of eye-pattern timing fluctuation on an actual digital mobile radio system.  相似文献

Error rates of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) signals in multipath slow fading Nakagami-m fading channels are considered. The exact probability density function of a sum of Nakagami-m random phase vectors is used to derive a closed-form expression for the error rates of OFDM signals. The precise error-rate analysis is extended to a system using multichannel reception with maximal ratio combining. An asymptotic error-rate analysis is also provided. For a two-tap channel with finite values of Nakagami-m fading parameters, our analysis and numerical results show that the asymptotic error-rate performance of an OFDM signal is similar to that of a single carrier signal transmitted over a Rayleigh fading channel. On the other hand, our analysis further shows that a frequency-selective channel that can be represented by two constant taps has similar asymptotic error-rate performance to that of a one-sided Gaussian fading channel. It is observed that, depending on the number of channel taps, the error-rate performance does not necessarily improve with increasing Nakagami-m fading parameters.  相似文献

In this paper, the design of signal constellations parameters is studied for Differential Unitary Space-Time Modulation (DUSTM) based on the design criterion of maximizing the diversity product. Further, noninteger searching method for the signal constellation parameters design is proposed in order to get better codes. Experimental results show that under the different Doppler spread and data transmission rate, the proposed design performs better than the previous design using integer parameters in Multiple Input Multiple Output Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) system over frequency-selective fading channels.  相似文献

The authors derive an exact and easily computed expression for the pairwise error event probability of interleaved coded PSK modulations transmitted over channels with correlated Rayleigh flat fading and additive white Gaussian noise. Both coherent and differential detection are considered. In the case of coded DPSK, it is found that full interleaving does not necessarily provide the best error performance, especially when the fading is relatively fast and when the autocorrelation function of the channel fading process exhibits an oscillating behavior. For coherent detection or for differential detection in channels with relatively slow fading, increasing the interleaving depth always improves the error performance. In these cases, an interleaving depth equivalent to one-fifth to one-quarter the duration of a fade cycle is almost as good as full interleaving  相似文献

We investigate linear and nonlinear space-time minimum mean-square-error (MMSE) multiuser detectors for high data rate wireless code-division multiple-access (CDMA) networks. The centralized reverse-link detectors comprise a space-time feedforward filter and a multiuser feedback filter which processes the previously detected symbols of all in-sector users. The feedforward filter processes chip-rate samples from a bank of chip-matched filters which operate on the baseband outputs from an array of antennas. We present an adaptive multiuser recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm which determines the MMSE adjusted filter coefficients with less complexity than individual adaptation for each user. We calculate the outage probabilities and isolate the effects of antenna, diversity, and interference suppression gains for linear and nonlinear filtering and for CDMA systems with varying levels of system control (e.g., timing control, code assignment, cell layout). For eight users transmitting uncoded 2-Mb/s quadrature phase-shift keying with a spreading gain of eight chips per symbol over a fading channel with a multipath delay spread of 1.25 μs, the performance of a three-antenna feedforward/feedback detector was within 1 dB (in signal-to-noise ratio per antenna) of ideal detection in the absence of interference. By training for 10% of a 5-ms frame, RLS adaptation enabled the same detector to suffer less than a 0.5-dB penalty due to the combined effects of imperfect coefficients and error propagation. The advantage of nonlinear feedforward/feedback detection over linear feedforward detection was shown to be significantly larger for a CDMA system with enhanced system control  相似文献

The mechanism and fundamental nature of the “cycle slip phenomenon” in clock recovery, which triggers the occurrence of burst-type irreducible errors in frequency-selective fading conditions, are theoretically clarified for PSK transmission systems with a coherent detection scheme. The appropriateness of the theory is identified through measurement by means of a fading simulator and a 64 kb/s QPSK modem. A DPSK demodulator which uses a digital delay line is presented. By digitising the demodulation process, the hardware design for the receiver is simplified. This also gives a greater flexibility to demodulate different carrier frequencies and data bit rates with the same receiver. Energy detection of frequency-shift keying (FSK) signals is the optimum noncoherent detection technique yielding a minimum bit-error rate (BER) on the additive white Gaussian noise channel. It is usually used when carrier phase estimation is difficult. When FSK signals are passed through a frequency-selective multipath fading channel, the multipath delay in the channel results in a multitone waveform being received during each signaling interval. An effective practical sequence estimation receiver for this situation is proposed. It makes use of energy detectors followed by a Viterbi (1979) or sequence estimator that uses an energy difference metric. Statistical properties of the detection variable are derived. Analytical upper and lower bounds on the BER are derived and the results compared with computer simulations to show the effectiveness of the technique.  相似文献

The error performance of multiple-symbol differential detection of uncoded QPSK signals transmitted over correlated Rayleigh fading channels is studied. The optimal detector is presented, along with an exact expression for the corresponding pairwise error event probability. It is shown that multiple-symbol differential detection is a very effective strategy for eliminating the irreducible error floor associated with a conventional differential detector. In all of the cases investigated, a detector with an observation interval as small as two symbols is sufficient for this purpose. It is also found that the error performance of a multiple-symbol differential detector is not sensitive to the mismatch between the decoding metric and the channel fading statistics  相似文献

A technique that can suppress multiple-access interference (MAI) in space-time block-coded (STBC) multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) code-division multiple-access (CDMA) systems is developed. The proposed scheme, called a constrained minimum mean square error (CMMSE) receiver, is an extension of the CMMSE receiver for a single-input-single-output system to MIMO systems. It is shown that the complexity of the proposed CMMSE receiver is almost independent of the number of transmitter antennas. The advantage of the proposed receiver over the existing receivers for STBC CDMA systems is demonstrated by comparing the closed-form expressions of the signal-to-interference plus noise ratio and simulated bit error rates. The results indicate that the proposed CMMSE receiver can provide a significant performance improvement over the conventional receivers and that the gain achieved by suppressing the MAI can be larger than that from increasing the transmitter or receiver diversity.  相似文献

It is shown that the degradation in the performance of wideband digital transmission systems due to intersymbol interference can be reduced by utilizing diversity selection using coding. A BCH (31, 21, 5) double-error-correcting code and QPSK (quadrature-phase-shift-keying) modulation with coherent detection are used for this study. The probability of word error is taken to be the measure of system performance. Analytic expressions are derived for the word error probability; these expressions simplify the simulation processes. It is found that a diversity selection algorithm using coding can reduce the floor of word error probability, and hence increase the dynamic range of received power before the word error probability reaches that floor  相似文献
