The present study examined whether differences in mineral content of the diet or faecal samples contribute to variation in analytical recovery of marker chromium from these samples. Three corn/soya bean diets containing various levels of Ca, P and Mg, and the corresponding faeces of swine fed these diets were used. Diet and faecal samples were analysed by colorimetry and atomic absorption spectrophotometry with increments of Cr added to samples either preceding or following the acid digestion procedure. Results indicated significant differences (P <0·05) in analytical recovery of Cr between diets and corresponding faeces, between individual diets and faeces, and between methods of determination. The acid digestion step leads to the lower recovery of Cr (diets, P <0·05; faeces, P <0·01) whereas no significant differences were found in post-digestion procedure by either method of determination, indicating that marker-chromium loss due to the acid digestion procedure was not higher than the apparent loss due to the acid analytical method. Results suggest that the analytical recovery factors should be considered when estimating faecal recovery of marker chromium or digestibility of nutrients.  相似文献

The effects of oryzanol and ferulic acid on the glucose metabolism of high-fat-fed mice were investigated. Male C57BL/6N mice were randomly divided into 4 groups: NC group fed with normal control diet; HF group fed with high-fat (17%) diet; HF-O group fed with high-fat diet supplemented with 0.5% oryzanol; and HF-FA group fed with high-fat diet supplemented with 0.5% ferulic acid. All animals were allowed free access to the experimental diets and water for 7 wk. At the end of the experimental period, the HF-O and HF-FA groups exhibited significantly lower blood glucose level and glucose-6-phosphatase (G6pase) and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) activities, and higher glycogen and insulin concentrations and glucokinase (GK) activity compared with NC and HF groups. The results of this study illustrate that both oryzanol and ferulic acid could reduce the risk of high-fat diet-induced hyperglycemia via regulation of insulin secretion and hepatic glucose-regulating enzyme activities.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of an uncooked Taiwanese yam, Dioscorea alata L. cv. Tainung No. 2, on faecal characteristics, faecal microflora, short‐chain fatty acid (SCFA) levels in the caecal content and faeces, and morphological and proliferation indices of the caecal and colonic crypts in BALB/c mice. Mice were randomly allocated to consume a control diet or a 25 or 50% (w/w) yam diet for 21 days. Faecal wet and dry masses increased with increasing proportions of dietary yam. Both yam diets similarly increased faecal moisture content and decreased faecal pH as compared with the control diet. The yam diets increased total bacteria and bifidobacteria counts and decreased Clostridium perfringens counts in faeces. The 50% yam diet, but not the 25% yam diet, increased total SCFA concentration in the caecal content. However, both yam diets increased total SCFA output in faeces. Both yam diets also promoted crypt depth, width and proliferation indices in the caecum; in contrast, they only promoted crypt width in the distal colon. In conclusion, the 25 and 50% yam diets increased the faecal mass and SCFA output, modulated the faecal microflora and thickened the mucosa lining of the caecum in BALB/c mice. The effect of ration on heat of glucose fermentation in sheep rumen fluid was investigated. Heat production was measured in a semiadiabatic calorimeter. In trial 1, the effect of glucose (.4 to 6.4 mg) on fermentative heat production was determined in rumen fluid from sheep fed 25 or 100% roughage diet. Heat of glucose fermentation decreased with increase in glucose dose in both diets. Maximal heat of glucose fermentation in both diets agreed with stoichiometric calculations. However, at 6.4 mg glucose, maximal heat was 18 kcal/mol in the 25% roughage diet and 14 kcal/mol in the 100% roughage diet. Purine N and maximal rate of heat production were not affected by diet type. In trial 2, the effect of glucose (1.6 and 6.4 mg) on fermentative heat production was determined in rumen fluid from sheep fed 25, 50, 75, and 100% roughage. In addition, fermentation pattern was measured in donors of the rumen fluid. Heat of glucose fermentation was positively correlated with organic matter digestibility and negatively correlated with rumen pH and acetate concentration. These observations indicate that in addition to the effect of roughage on the fermentation pattern, supplemental adaptation may occur, as indicated by the reduction in the heat of glucose fermentation.  相似文献

Heat stress of lactating cattle results in dramatic reductions in dry matter intake (DMI). As a result, energy input cannot satisfy energy needs and thus accelerates body fat mobilization. Decreasing the level of roughage neutral detergent fiber (NDF) in prepartum diets, and thereby increasing the amount of nonfiber carbohydrates, may provide an adequate supply of energy and glucose precursors to maintain and minimize the decrease in DMI while reducing mobilization of adipose tissue. The effects of 3-wk prepartum diets containing different amounts of roughage NDF on DMI, blood metabolites, and lactation performance of dairy cows were investigated under summer conditions in Thailand. Thirty cross-bred cows (87.5% Holstein × 12.5% Sahiwal) were dried off 60 d before their expected calving date and were assigned immediately to a nonlactating cow diet containing the net energy for lactation recommended by the National Research Council (2001) model. The treatment diets contained 17.4, 19.2, and 21.0% DM as roughage NDF from bana grass (Pennisetum purpureum × Pennisetum glaucum) silage. Levels of concentrate NDF were 39.8, 40.2, and 38.6% of dietary NDF, so the levels of dietary NDF were 28.9, 32.1, and 34.2% of DM. After parturition, all cows received a lactating cow diet containing 12.7% roughage NDF and 23% dietary NDF. During the entire experiment, the minimum and maximum temperature-humidity index averaged 77.7 and 86.8, respectively, indicating conditions appropriate for the induction of extreme heat stress. As parturition approached, DMI decreased steadily, resulting in a 12.9, 25, and 32.8% decrease in DMI from d −21 until calving for nonlactating cows fed prepartum diets containing 17.4, 19.2, and 21% roughage NDF, respectively. During the 3-wk prepartum period, intakes of DM and net energy for lactation and concentrations of plasma glucose and serum insulin were higher for cows fed diets containing less roughage NDF. In cows fed the 3-wk prepartum diets containing less roughage NDF, calf birth weights, milk yield, and 4% fat-corrected milk were higher, whereas periparturient concentrations of serum nonesterified fatty acids and plasma β-hydroxybutyrate were lower. There was a carryover effect of the prepartum diet on serum nonesterified fatty acids and plasma β-hydroxybutyrate during the first 7 d in milk, and therefore on milk production. These results suggest that feeding diets containing decreased amounts of roughage NDF during the 3-wk prepartum period may minimize the decrease in DMI and lipid mobilization as parturition approaches. This strategy may thus minimize the effect of hormonal factors and heat stress on periparturient cows.  相似文献

The prevalence, serotypes and virulence profiles of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) were investigated in 205 healthy beef and dairy cattle, and 106 goats reared in the southeastern region of Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The prevalence of STEC was 57.5% (61/106) in goats, 39.2%, (40/102) in beef cattle and 17.5% (18/103) in dairy cattle. Among the 514 STEC isolates, 40 different serotypes were found and some of them were identified in a specific host. STEC isolates harboring stx(1) corresponded to 15.6% (28/180), 26.7% (16/60) and 24.1% (66/274) in beef cattle, dairy cattle and goats, respectively. stx(2) was found in 30% (54/180), 53.3% (32/60) and 34.7% (95/274) of beef and dairy cattle, and goats. stx(1) plus stx(2) sequences were harbored by 54.4% (98/180), 20% (12/60) and 41.2% (113/274) of beef cattle, dairy cattle and goats, respectively. The eae sequence was found in 15% (9/60) and 0.6% (1/180) of STEC isolates from dairy and beef cattle, respectively, and the toxB gene was found only in one O157:H7 strain isolated from beef cattle. Strains with the genetic profiles stx(2) ehxA iha saa and stx(1) stx(2) ehxA iha saa were the most prevalent among STEC isolates from cattle. Profiles stx(1) stx(2) ehxA iha, stx(2), and stx(1) iha accounted for 75.5% (207 /274) of the STEC isolates from goats. While STEC strains carrying either stx(2) alone or associated with stx(1) were found more frequently in cattle, those harboring sequences stx(1c) and stx(2d) alone or associated with stx(1c) predominated in goats. Our data show a diversity of STEC strains in food-producing animals, most of them carrying genes linked to severe forms of human diseases.  相似文献

The n‐alkane technique was evaluated for estimating the diet composition of sheep grazing in heathlands. Six dietary treatments, composed by different proportions of herbaceous (Lolium perenne and Trifolium repens) and woody species (Erica umbellata, Erica cinerea, Calluna vulgaris and Ulex gallii) were offered to 24 sheep housed in metabolism crates. Diet composition was estimated from alkane concentrations in diet and faeces, by least‐squares procedures, using all available alkanes (C1) from C25 to C33, or only those with higher concentration (C2): C27, C29, C30, C31 and C33. Additionally, the effect of applying mean treatment faecal recoveries (R1), mean faecal recoveries of all experimental diets (R2) or no faecal recovery correction (R3) was studied in both selections of alkanes (C1 and C2). No significant differences were observed between the use of all alkane information (C1) or limited number of alkanes (C2) in the diet composition calculations. There were no significant differences between measured proportions of dietary components and those estimated with procedures R1 and R2. In contrast, the proportions calculated with R3 procedure differed significantly (P < 0.05) from the measured proportions, overestimating feeds with higher content of long chain n‐alkanes. The results indicate that correction of faecal alkane concentrations to allow for incomplete faecal recovery is necessary in order to obtain accurate estimates of diet composition, using mean treatment faecal recoveries (R1) or mean faecal recoveries of all experimental diets (R2). The in vitro cumulative gas production technique can be used to assess microbial activity of a complex community, in relation to fermentation of a particular energy source. Therefore, in combination with an in vivo study to examine the effects of two different diets for weaning piglets, microbial activities of faeces were compared from animals on the two different diets. The two diets were: CHO diet [containing added fermentable carbohydrates, including sugarbeet pulp (SBP) and wheat starch (WST)], and control diet without any added fermentable carbohydrates. Neither diet contained antibiotics or extra added copper. Twenty‐four piglets were selected from 12 litters (two per litter), weaned at 4 weeks of age (neither creep feeding nor any antibiotic treatment before and during the study), and introduced to one of the two diets. After 9 days on the diet, faecal samples were collected from selected animals, and tested for their activity in terms of gas production kinetics, and end‐products such as volatile fatty acids, ammonia and dry matter disappearance of the two test substrates SBP and WST. The bacterial diversity was also analysed before and after in vitro fermentation using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analysis of amplified 16S rRNA genes. There were differences both in kinetics and end‐products of the substrates. More interestingly, significant differences were detected between inocula, although mainly in terms of fermentation kinetics of the two substrates. With the CHO inoculum, SBP was fermented faster than with the control, while this effect was reversed for WST. Significantly higher diversity, as measured by DGGE fingerprint analysis, was detected in the microbial community enrichment on SBP as compared with WST at the end of fermentation. The difference between the kinetics of SBP compared with WST fermentation by faecal microbiota from the CHO diet fed piglets suggests better adaptation to SBP fermentation than to WST fermentation. The WST fermentation was more unexpected, given that a significant amount of starch is known to be fermentable by the small intestinal microbiota. It was concluded that the microbial community composition and activity in the GIT may be changed in response to diet, and that this change can be detected in vitro. Fecal samples from 630 slaughtered finisher pigs were examined by PCR to assess the shedding of Escherichia coli O157 (rfbE) and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC, stx). The proportion of positive samples was 7.5% for rfbE and 22% for stx. By colony hybridization, 31 E. coli O157 and 45 STEC strains were isolated, and these strains were further characterized by phenotypic and genotypic traits. Among E. coli O157 strains, 30 were sorbitol positive, 30 had an H type other than H7, and none harbored stx genes. Intimin (eae), enterohemolysin (ehxA), EAST1 (astA), and porcine A/E-associated protein (paa) were present in 10, 3, 26, and 6% of strains. Among them, one eae-gamma1-positive O157:H7 strain testing positive for ehxA and astA and two eae-alpha1-positive O157:H45 strains were classified as enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC). The O157:H45 EPEC harbored the EAF plasmid and the bfpA gene, factors characteristic for typical EPEC. The isolated STEC strains (43 sorbitol positive) belonged to 11 O:H serotypes, including three previously reported in human STEC causing hemolytic uremic syndrome (O9:H-, O26:H-, and O103:H2). All but one strain harbored stx2e. The eae and ehxA genes, which are strongly correlated with human disease, were present in only one O103:H2 strain positive for stx1 and paa, whereas the astA gene was found more frequently (14 strains). High prevalence of STEC was found among finisher pigs, but according to the virulence factors the majority of these strains seem to be of low virulence.  相似文献

An assessment was carried out of the effects of an increase in the amount of fibre, as cellulose, and of a replacement of maize starch by potato starch in diets containing egg albumen as the sole protein, on the determination of true digestibility (TD) and biological value (BV). An increase in the fibre content of the diet at the expense of maize starch led to a rise in both fascal and urinary N excretion, with diets containing either 20 or 80 g egg albumen kg?1. However, the response of the rats to increasing fibre concentration in the diet was different for the two levels of protein probably due to differences in dry matter intake (DMI). It was found that the conventional method of estimating metabolic faecal nitrogen (MFN) was not adequate for diets of decreasing digestibility; TD decreased by 0.35% for a rise of 1% cellulose in the diet. A more accurate method of estimating MFN was derived from a relationship between the N in the faeces and the digestibility of the diet. The increase in urinary N excretion led to a decrease of 0.41% in BV for a 1% rise in the cellulose concentration of the diet. It appears, therefore, that the ratio of digestible to indigestible matter in the diet affects the determination of protein quality. The replacement of maize starch by potato starch in the diet caused an increase in faecal N excretion and a decrease in urinary N excretion until a level of 200 g potato starch kg-1 was reached. This affected the determination of TD and BV accordingly. An increase in the size of the caecum of the rats fed potato starch indicated that increased fermentation may have resulted in production of additional bacterial cells to be excreted in the faeces. Thus, both the amount of fibre and the type of starch in the diet affect the determination of protein quality.  相似文献

Data were from 20 experiments that utilized early to midlactation Holstein cows fed complete mixed diets or fed at constant forage:concentrate ratios. Within-cow diet comparisons (1688 cow-periods) were analyzed by least squares analysis of variance; mathematical model included experiment, cow in experiment, period, body weight, and source of roughage. Objectives were to determine relationships between neutral detergent fiber content of diet and milk yield and dry matter intake. Roughages and number of cow-periods were: sugarcane bagasse/silage (507), cottonseed hulls (504), corn silage (268), ground corrugated boxes (170), alfalfa/peanut hay (132), and others (107). Dry matter intake and estimated net energy intake had linear effects on milk yield and explained 21.6 and 24.0% of its residual variation; milk yield had curvilinear (quadratic) effect and explained 22.4% of dry matter intake residual variation. Interaction between neutral detergent fiber and source of roughage on milk yield, 4% fat-corrected milk, and dry matter intake resulted in reductions of 5.6, 5.6, and 13% in residual variations. Results suggest neutral detergent (% of dry matter) has greater effect on dry matter intake than on milk yield and its use in formulating diets for dairy cows will be within roughage source.  相似文献

Two experiments were done to determine whether short-term supplementation (5 days pre-slaughter) with magnesium acetate, or a combination of magnesium acetate, tryptophan, vitamin E and vitamin C would improve pork quality. In the first experiment the pigs (Pietrain×Yorkshire, n=96) were fed a standard feed or a magnesium supplemented feed for 5 days prior to slaughter. As a possible stress factor half of the animals were slaughtered upon arrival at the slaughterplant whereas the remaining animals were allowed two hours of rest in lairage before slaughter. Magnesium supplementation did not result in an increase in plasma magnesium concentration at slaughter. Omission of lairage resulted in higher plasma glucose concentrations, but plasma lactate concentrations were not affected. Drip loss and ultimate pH were not affected by diet or omission of lairage. Omission of lairage resulted in poorer color characteristics. This effect was prevented by supplementation with magnesium. In the second experiment the pigs (Pietrain×Yorkshire, n=92) were fed a standard feed or this standard feed supplemented with magnesium acetate, tryptophan, vitamin E and vitamin C for 5 days prior to slaughter. Supplementation with vitamin E did not increase muscle vitamin E concentration. Inclusion of supplements in the diet failed to improve water-holding capacity or color characteristics. These results indicate that short-term supplementation with magnesium acetate, tryptophan, vitamin E and vitamin C is of little value in improving pork quality when pigs are not stressed beyond levels associated with routine slaughter procedures.  相似文献

Diurnal variation in faecal excretion of dietary chromium (Cr) was studied in this experiment in mature swine. Five gestating sows weighing between 225 and 250 kg were fed a corn/soya bean meal diet containing 14% crude protein, NRC recommended amounts of vitamins and minerals with a Ca: P ratio of 1.3:1. Chromic oxide was added (0.1% w/w) to the test diet, and ferric oxide was added (0.5% w/w) to the pre-test and post-test diets as dietary markers. Sows received 0.9 kg of the diet twice daily for 8 days. Total faeces from the test diet were collected and a sample of approximately 150 g of morning samples for days 6 to 9 of the experiment was separated. Faecal recovery of dietary Cr was calculated from the total collection and the samples of the 4-day period. It was found that faecal concentration of the Cr varied between days (P < 0.05) and between times of the day (P < 0.05); true equilibrium of Cr excretion was never reached. Diurnal variation in faecal excretion of dietary Cr was shown to exist; Cr concentration was higher in the late morning samples than in the morning samples (P < 0.05). Total faecal recovery of dietary Cr was 93.27%, whereas a greater (P < 0.05) value was obtained by morning sampling (118.76%). A portion of the dietary Cr (6.73%) was retained in the gastrointestinal tract even after 2 days of Cr withdrawal from the diet.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the in vivo uptake of antioxidant capacity (AC) in rats fed on diets containing commonly consumed MRPs obtained from bread crust (BC) at long-term. Additionally we focused on understanding the effects of those compounds on the oxidative status of these animals. The global antioxidant response of the diets was measured. During 88 days, rats were fed control diet or diets containing BC or its soluble high molecular weight, soluble low molecular weight or insoluble fractions (BC, HMW, LMW and insoluble diets, respectively). In the final week, faeces from different dietary treatments were collected to determine the AC still retained in it and then calculate the uptake efficiency of AC. Animals were sacrificed and the liver and biceps brachii muscle were removed to investigate catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels. The addition of BC or its derivatives in the diet led to a significantly higher AC excreted with the faeces and to a lower uptake rate (around 90% in these groups vs. 98% in the control group). The muscle and liver showed different oxidative status after consumption of experimental diets. The muscle evidenced certain oxidative damage due to the BC consumption, more pronounced when the isolated fractions were ingested. However, the BC diet, but not the rest, induced a positive effect on the antioxidant defence in the liver, the key organ for xenobiotic metabolism, with increases in the CAT and GPx activities as well as the GSH stock (56, 20 and 14% with respect to the control group, respectively). The discordance found between the antioxidant status of muscle and antioxidant status of liver highlights the importance of considering several tissues to establish the effect of glycated compounds on the redox balance in an organism.  相似文献

Ca-Fe interactions are known, but no studies are available about the effects of Ca-enriched goat or cow milk on Fe status in nutritional ferropenic anaemia (NFA). To examine this matter, control and Fe-deficient rats were fed for 14 d with goat or cow milk diets containing either normal or high Ca content (5000 or 10,000 mg/kg diet), and different indices and parameters related to iron status were measured. The apparent digestibility coefficient (ADC) and the Fe retention/intake (R/I) ratio were higher in control and anaemic rats fed goat milk diet (G diet), despite high-Ca content. Ca enrichment decreased Fe stores in liver and sternum in anaemic rats fed cow milk diet (C diet), however G diet did not modify Fe content in the organs studied in control and anaemic rats. In anaemic rats, Ca-supplementation decreased haematocrit, but platelets and serum Fe were not affected, however, in control rats platelets increased except for Ca-enriched G diet, this fact reveals that Ca-Fe interaction is minimized with G diet. Serum ferritin was always higher in rats fed G vs. C diet, both in control and anaemic rats fed either normal or Ca-enriched diets. Ca-supplementation decreased ferritin levels in control and anaemic rats fed C diet and also, though to a lesser extent, in those given the G diet. This indicates that with this G diet there is a better recovery of body Fe stores in anaemic rats, despite Ca-supplementation. In this study it is noteworthy that despite high Ca content, a goat milk diet resulted in minimal Ca-Fe interactions and did not adversely affect Fe status in rats with NFA.  相似文献

The effects of eight different pre-slaughter diets on gut microflora, pH and dry matter were evaluated in 112 slaughter-weight, pasture-finished heifers. Hide dirtiness at slaughter, plasma cortisol, meat pH and stickiness, and liveweight loss, were also examined. The pre-slaughter diets were: 48 h of 100% meadow hay, lucerne hay, red clover hay, perennial ryegrass hay, haylage, haylage supplemented with maize silage, pasture, or 24 h fasting before transport. Fasted animals had the highest counts of rumen Escherichia coli and Enterobacteria compared to other treatments (P<0.001), while red clover hay and haylage had the lowest (P<0.05). Faecal E. coli counts were also highest for fasted animals (P<0.05). Rumen E. coli and Enterobacteria counts were positively correlated with rumen pH (P<0.001), and negatively correlated with fibre intake (P<0.001). Diet significantly affected the pH of both the rumen and faeces (P<0.001), with fasted animals having the highest rumen pH and haylage and red-clover hay-fed animals the lowest. Dry matter (%) of the rumen contents was also significantly affected by diet (P<0.001). The mean carcass weight of fed heifers was 5 kg heavier than that of the fasted heifers (P<0.05). A pH/volatile fatty acid (VFA) dependent mechanism is suggested as the major mode for E. coli suppression by feeds used in the study. Coumarins may have contributed to lower ruminal and faecal E. coli counts with E. coli counts negatively correlated with expected coumarin ingestion (P<0.01). Feeding pasture-fed cattle conserved herbaceous forages, in preference to fasting, before transport for slaughter may prove beneficial in reducing the risk of carcass contamination with E. coli and other bacteria of digesta and/or faecal origin, and in protecting carcass weight.  相似文献

The possible degradation of non-extractable condensed tannins (NECT) within the intestinal tract and their effect on faecal weight and composition was studied. Two groups of male Wistar rats were fed either a NECT-free control diet, or a diet containing 100 g carob pod concentrate kg?1 (53 g NECT kg?1 dry matter) for 5 weeks. A slight effect of NECT on growth rate was observed in the fifth week. The NECT diet did not affect food intake. Significant increases of total faecal output as well as water, nitrogen and fat excretion were observed. NECT were not degraded in the intestinal tract, since they were quantitatively recovered in faeces (98 ± 1%). Since the usual spectrophotometric methods gave contradictory results on NECT levels in the diet and faeces, an alternative method based on Klason lignin residues was used.  相似文献

The effects of germinated faba bean (Vicia faba minor var Alameda)‐ and chickpea (Cicer arietinum kabuli var Athenas)‐based diets on performance, N utilisation, amino acid ileal digestibility and plasma concentrations were studied in growing male Wistar rats. Raw and germinated faba bean and chickpea seed meals were incorporated in essential amino acid‐supplemented and energy‐equalised diets as the only sources of protein. A lactalbumin‐based diet equalised in protein (100 g kg?1) and digestible energy (15.5 kJ g?1) with the test diets was used as control. Weight gains, gain/feed ratios, N retention and NPU values of animals fed raw or germinated legumes were lower than those of rats given the control (lactalbumin) diet, while faecal dry weights were higher. However, N retention and NPU values of rats fed germinated faba bean diets were higher and faecal dry weights lower than those of animals fed non‐germinated faba bean diets. Liver and thymus fresh and dry relative weights were lower than controls for all legume diets, whilst small intestine, caecum and colon relative weights were higher than controls for non‐germinated faba beans and chickpeas either germinated or not. Caecum and colon fresh and dry relative weights of rats fed germinated faba bean seeds were lower than those of rats fed non‐germinated faba beans and not different from controls. Except for aspartic acid and proline in rats fed raw faba bean diets, apparent ileal digestibilities of amino acids were not different or higher in rats fed legume diets as compared with controls. Except for arginine, apparent ileal amino acid digestibility was higher for germinated than for non‐germinated faba bean seeds. The amounts of glycine, arginine and ornithine in plasma significantly increased whilst those of threonine, alanine, leucine and lysine decreased with respect to controls in faba bean‐ or chickpea‐fed rats, either germinated or not. We conclude that (a) germination of faba bean seeds gave rise to a significant (P < 0.01) but limited improvement in performance, N retention and apparent ileal digestibilities of some amino acids in growing rats compared with non‐germinated seeds, while there was no detectable effect in the case of germinated chickpea seeds, and (b) the apparent ileal amino acid digestibility of essential amino acid‐supplemented diets based on faba bean or chickpea meals, either germinated or not, is similar or even higher than controls. © 2002 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The physical structure of fodder beets, raw potatoes, ensiled pressed sugar beet pulp, ensiled brewers grains, and corn cob silage was evaluated in diets containing concentrates and either corn silage or grass silage as the roughage source. In one series of experiments, the chewing activity of eight cows was measured over 4 d. The beet pulp and fodder beets were added to the two roughage sources at two ratios [20:80 and 35:65, dry matter (DM) basis]. Potatoes, brewers grains, and corn cob silage were fed in a fixed amount (5 to 6 kg of DM) with corn silage. The chewing indexes (eating and ruminating time per kilogram of DM ingested) for fodder beets and beet pulp averaged 34.3 and 32.3 min/kg of DM, respectively, and were hardly affected by the nature of the roughage or by the inclusion ratio. The chewing indexes for potatoes, brewers grains, and corn cob silage were 23.7, 56.6, and 41.6 min/kg of DM, respectively. In another series of experiments using 8 to 11 cows, the ratio of roughage to concentrates was lowered weekly by 5 percentage units, and the critical rough-age portion of the diet was determined (i.e., the amount just before a lack of physical structure was observed). The roughage source was either fed alone or supplemented with about 4 kg of DM of the experimental feed. The critical roughage portion of the diet decreased when the experimental feeds were added; the decrease was greatest with ensiled pressed beet pulp and was lowest with corn cob silage.  相似文献
