The achievement of accuracy in precision machining depends on the ability to take account of system deflection. The application of intelligent control to grinding processes is a way to achieve a desired workpiece size and surface integrity. A generic intelligent control system for grinding has been developed based and implemented on a commercially available CNC grinding machine. The implementation has been shown to be successful. The paper describes the object-oriented development of the generic intelligent control system for grinding based on the proposed modular conceptual framework for adaptive grinding control, reviews previous work towards intelligent grinding control, summarises the previously used adaptive strategies and introduces the structure and operation of the generic intelligent control system. Finally, the problems encountered during the system development are discussed.

The sensing systems for flexible automation and robotics systems are increasing in complexity and require more data processing.
Dedicated microprocessors and stand-alone sensor systems are being used more often to relieve the increased processing burden.
This leads naturally to a modular approach for building systems. A system comprising interchangeable ‘Intelligent Sensor Modules’
is presented, along with a set of possible algorithms and methods for inter-modular communication. As an example of the modular
approach, the generic task of inserting a peg from a random orientation is implemented by constructing a simple modular system
(consisting of a microprocessor controlled tactile array sensor, a robot, and a host microcomputer) by using the techniques
presented herewith.

Mass customization strategies could be usefully deployed by companies whose products are characterized by a modular design.
Typically, each module serves a specific aspect of the overall product function at varying performance levels. Each product
variant (constructed through a unique combination of modular performance levels), therefore, serves to customize the overall
performance of the product, thus serving the unique needs of each customer. The high demand for each module guarantees economies
of scale and, eventually, low cost to customer. The rationale of configuring production processes for producing individual
product variants originates from the fact that massive process data is commonly available in a firm and there exists a generic
process structure underlying the production of similar products in a family. To design a decision support mechanism that constructs
process configuration corresponding to a given product configuration, this paper develops a formal modeling of process variety
using Petri nets. Object-oriented Petri nets (PNs) with changeable structures (OPNs-CS) are applied to deal with the issues
of generic representation, constraints compliance, and operational sequence requirements. Object-oriented PN (OPN) models
facilitate generic representation of product and process variety as well as their instantiations. The OPNs-CS model is tested
with simulation. Based on simulation results, the optimal configuration of production processes can be determined for each
individual product as well as the cohort of a product family. To illustrate the feasibility and potential of OPNs-CS based
process variety modeling, a case study of process configuration for mass customized textile spindles is reported.

In manufacturing systems, wear-out and eventual failure are unavoidable. However, to reduce the rate of their occurrence and to prolong the life of equipment or the capacity for extended productive use of the equipment under the necessary technological functioning and servicing, maintenance can be performed. For large manufacturing systems, maintenance integration involves a particular development concerned with both complexity models and computing time. This paper presents an effective way of modeling complex manufacturing systems through hierarchical and modular analysis by using stochastic Petri nets and Markov chains. In the proposed approach, the integration of maintenance policies in a manufacturing system is facilitated by the development of a generic model. With this generic modeling, the user doesn't need to code the strategies but only to instantiate the generic model with the structure of the manufacturing system. This method allows various maintenance strategies to be coded in the generic model with the aim of studying their influence on system dependability and performance.

A modular architecture model of a computer-supported collaborative design (CSCD) system is proposed on the basis of the hierarchical
structure characteristics of a distributed collaborative design system and advanced component object technology. The model
mainly regards the module as the core organizing and managing design objects and uses the common object request broker architecture
(CORBA) specifications as an interactive platform to achieve object communication. The browser/server computing model deals
with the remote heterogeneous collaborative design problem. Product design strategies and mechanisms for collaborative design
are separated to facilitate the application of distributed collaborative design environment for quick implementation. The
open design framework for CSCD system developers can support the implementation of distributed collaborative design to improve
product design speed and reduce product development time. The modular CSCD system (MCSCDS) model and its implementation are
achieved in the modular CSCD, a prototype system.

A software system is presented for simulating the behaviour of an automated material handling and transportation system typically used in flexible manufacturing. The program is written in the UPL language on top of a commercially available CAD system. It makes use of a discrete event simulation model written in ECSL to generate a schedule of events defining an animation scenario. The program relies on a graphical library of modular component elements that enable structured automated material handling and transportation system elements to be created. The motion patterns are generic and are implemented as procedures that can be associated with any entity as required. Motion employs the concept of entity associativity within the CAD environment in order to apply the same motion patterns to groups of entities. The latter retain, however, their individual motion specification. Advantages of the program include inherent integration with CAM, availability of a host of parent CAD facilities and thus ability to visualise facility performance and to appraise design in detail.
