A population medical genetic study of spinal muscular atrophies (SMA) was carried out in 1800 individuals in 6 russian and 3 middle asian regions. 33 patients with SMA were ascertained including 29 with autosomal recessive childhood proximal SMA (SMA I-III) and 4 patients with rare SMA types. There were revealed either overlapping of diagnostic criteria of I-III types in some patients or interfamilial differences of types in 3 from 6 familial cases, (one of them with distant relatives affected as well as pronounced clinical genetic variability of rare forms of SMA (all sporadic cases).

With the inadequate anatomic revision observed in the literature, the authors tried to establish the most frequent origin patterns of the arteria ascendens, colic branch of the ileocolic artery. The search consisted of one hundred cases and it was possible to distinguish four fundamental types of vascular origin. The absence of studies in radiological anatomy made this contribution very important for the knowledge of the arterial disposition in the modern diagnostic procedures of the region.     

Decision Tree Assessment of Challenging Technologies for Mission to Europa

The intriguing possibility that conditions exist that could support the evolution of life, as we understand it, in the ice-covered oceans of Europa makes the exploration of that Jovian moon a significant priority in NASA’s solar system explorations. There is a need, therefore, to develop and demonstrate technologies and scientific methodologies that could be used to explore these extreme subice realms with the goal of establishing whether or not some form of life has evolved. A NASA search-for-life mission to Europa would involve site reconnaissance, site selection, landing, deep drilling through ice, small autonomous submersibles traversing the purported sea under the ice, and in-situ life detection. Many advanced technologies not currently available would be required. Identification and rank ordering of enabling technologies in a portfolio that can be developed for a certain specified research and development budget is crucial for mission success. This paper describes the results of utilizing a decision tree methodology and an appropriate optimization process to formalize the technology investment strategy.     

Shuttle Debris Impact Analysis: Postreturn to Flight Real-Time Mission Support

Prior to the Columbia accident, quantitative impact assessment tools were not available to analyze debris impacts onto the Shuttle’s thermal protection system. Following the accident, the Columbia Accident Investigation Board recommended changes to increase the safety of future shuttle flights; one component was the development of physics-based analytical capabilities to evaluate damage due to debris impacts. This paper will present an overview of real time debris assessment impact analysis conducted by the Boeing Philadelphia Advanced Structural Analysis Impact Analysis Team in support of Space Shuttle missions since Return to Flight, the first mission after the Columbia accident. Specifically, analyses performed in support of missions STS-114, 121 and 117 will be presented. For each of these cases, an overview of the structural and material model development will be provided, and results of each analysis will be presented followed by a discussion of how the results lead into real time mission decisions. This work illustrates the importance of maintaining a physics-based real-time analysis capability as a vital instrument in supporting the safety of future spaceflight missions.     

Mission statement rationales and organizational alignment in the not-for-profit health care sector

This article presents the findings from a research study conducted on the use of mission statements in not-for-profit health care organizations. In particular, the study sought to determine if a relationship exists between the initial "rationales" that led to the creation of a mission statement and hospital performance. The findings suggest that some of the rationales for developing mission statements are indeed more important than others and that organizational alignment with the mission statement is of key importance to both the mission's and the hospital's success.     

New Approach to Mission Design Based on the Fundamental Equations of Motion

The complexity of space missions has been steadily increasing as new missions are expected to be designed to fly under more and more stringent constraints. This paper shows the use of a new, simple methodology that is useful for complex mission design. It deals with determining the “exact” control force needed to cause a spacecraft to move at a given inclination in a circular orbit around an oblate rotating body whose gravitational field is nonuniform. The methodology uses the explicit Udwadia–Kalaba equations of motions showing the simplicity, accuracy, and power of the approach, and the ease with which the control forces can be explicitly obtained.

Seroprevalence of hepatitis E virus among United Nations Mission in Haiti (UNMIH) peacekeepers, 1995

In the management of unstable angina and non-Q-wave acute myocardial infarction (AMI), there is considerable debate regarding the use of invasive strategy versus conservative strategy. The Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) III B trial found similar clinical outcomes for the 2 strategies, but the Veterans Administration Non-Q-Wave Infarction Strategies in-Hospital trial found a higher mortality with the invasive strategy. Both these trials were conducted before platelet glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibition and coronary stenting, both of which improve clinical outcome. Thus, there is a need to reexamine the question of which management strategy is optimal in the current era of platelet glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibition and new coronary interventions. The Treat Angina with Aggrastat and determine Cost of Therapy with an Invasive or Conservative Strategy (TACTICS-TIMI 18) trial is an international, multicenter, randomized trial that is evaluating the clinical efficacy of early invasive and early conservative treatment strategies in patients with unstable angina or non-Q-wave AMI treated with tirofiban, heparin, and aspirin. Patients are randomized to an invasive strategy, involving cardiac catheterization within 4 to 48 hours and revascularization with angioplasty or bypass surgery if feasible, versus a conservative strategy, where patients are referred for catheterization only for recurrent pain at rest or provokable ischemia. The primary end point is death, MI, or rehospitalization for acute coronary syndromes through a 6-month follow-up. The trial is also testing the "troponin hypothesis," that baseline troponins T and I will be useful in selecting an optimal management strategy.     

Standards and evaluation in the education and training of professional psychologists: The National Council of Schools of Professional Psychology Mission Bay Conference.

The National Council of Schools of Professional Psychology (NCSPP) hosted a National Conference in December 1986. Three general and 33 specific resolutions were unanimously adopted. Particular focus was on core curriculum and evaluation related to the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for careers in professional psychology. The resolutions have significant areas of convergence and divergence with the resolutions adopted at the June 1987 National Conference on Graduate Education in Psychology in Salt Lake City, Utah. The resolutions of the Mission Bay and Utah conferences are in agreement on the primary importance of recruiting and retaining minority faculty and students and developing curricula more sensitive to cultural diversity. Regarding the role of freestanding schools, the Mission Bay conference resolutions maintain that criterion-based evaluations should be applied equitably to all programs in whatever setting and eschew the venue-based orientation endorsed at the Utah conference.
