There is growing interest in examining oxytocin and social functioning in human and non-human primates. Studies of human oxytocin biology are typically restricted to peripheral assessments because opportunities to collect cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are rare. Several studies have examined CSF oxytocin levels in captive adult primates, but none to our knowledge have been conducted under free-ranging conditions and inclusive of infants. The main goal of this study was to establish feasibility of quantifying CSF oxytocin levels in free-ranging adult female and infant rhesus monkeys living on Cayo Santiago, PR. CSF oxytocin levels were examined in relation to individuals' demographic and reproductive characteristics as well as plasma cortisol levels. CSF oxytocin concentrations ranged from 36.02 to 134.41 pg/ml in adult females (ages 7–26 years; N = 31) and 35.94 to 77.3 pg/ml in infants (ages 38–134 days; N = 17). CSF oxytocin levels were positively correlated with adult female age and negatively correlated with infant age. The former correlation was driven by reproductive status. CSF oxytocin levels were unrelated to dominance rank or plasma cortisol levels. In contrast to a previous study of plasma oxytocin concentrations in this population, CSF oxytocin levels did not differ significantly between lactating and non-lactating females. These findings: 1) provide feasibility data for examining CSF oxytocin levels in free-ranging non-human primates and 2) indicate that CSF oxytocin levels may be a biomarker of age-related central nervous system changes across lifespan development. A 10-month-old infant with tuberculous (Tb) meningitis accompanying hydrocephalus was successfully treated with a VP shunt operation soon after a PCR assay of CSF was found to be negative for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. PCR assay of CSF is helpful for determination of the timing for VP shunting in Tb meningitis.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of early exposure to variable parenting style and infant abuse on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concentrations of monoamine metabolites and examined the role of monoaminergic function in the intergenerational transmission of infant abuse in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta). Forty-three infants reared by their biological mothers and 15 infants that were cross-fostered at birth and reared by unrelated mothers were followed longitudinally through their first 3 years of life or longer. Approximately half of the infants were reared by abusive mothers and half by nonabusive controls. Abused infants did not differ from controls in CSF concentrations of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), homovanillic acid (HVA), or 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylgycol (MHPG). Abused infants, however, were exposed to higher rates of maternal rejection, and highly rejected infants had lower CSF 5-HIAA and HVA than low-rejection infants. The abused females who became abusive mothers in adulthood had lower CSF 5-HIAA than the abused females who did not. A similar trend was also observed among the cross-fostered females, suggesting that low serotonergic function resulting from early exposure to high rates of maternal rejection plays a role in the intergenerational transmission of infant abuse. We report a case of pulmonary fibrosis in an infant receiving amiodarone for treatment of intractable atrioventricular reentrant tachycardia secondary to Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. At 9 months, a screening chest radiograph showed a diffuse interstitial infiltrate in an asymptomatic, thriving infant. Amiodarone was discontinued and the pulmonary fibrosis resolved gradually over 6 months. This case documents the first report of amiodarone induced pulmonary fibrosis in the pediatric age group. We speculate that as amiodarone is used more frequently to manage pediatric arrhythmias, pulmonary fibrosis, a known complication of this antiarrhythmia in adults may be seen with increasing frequency in children.  相似文献

Spontaneous intracranial hypotension is a rare but well known entity first described by the German neurosurgeon Schaltenbrand. We report the clinical and radiological findings of four patients (2 males, 2 females, mean age 55 years) presenting with this clinical entity and peculiar constant MRI findings. Intense postural headache was present in all patients together with a very low CSF pressure at lumbar tap although none of the patients had any history of recent lumbar puncture, spinal or cerebral surgery or cranio-cervical trauma. MRI revealed in all patients an intense meningeal enhancement and thickening which was most prominent on the dural side of the subdural space. The ventricular system was thin, presenting almost like slit ventricules. A downward shift of the cerebellar tonsils and hemorrhagic subdural collections were also observed in two patients. Biopsy of meninges performed in two patients showed fibrosis of the leptomeninges together with signs of old hemorrhage in one case. We postulate that histologic and radiologic changes are due to chronic subdural bleeding in relation with abnormal displacement of the nervous structures due to intracranial hypotension. The underlying cause of spontaneous intracranial hypotension is rarely established and the course of the disease is benign. Some authors have advocated to perform isotopic cysternography in search for a CSF leak, particularly in the spine, that could be surgically corrected. No such investigation has been conducted yet in our patients because the spontaneous evolution has been mostly favorable.  相似文献

This study extends an examination of the behavioral and pituitary-adrenal responses of infant squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) separated from their mothers under different environmental conditions to another physiological system by measuring the metabolites of the central monoamines found in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). This study included spectrographic examination of the vocalizations emitted by the infant during separation. Infants were separated from their mothers for 24 hr under 3 conditions: Home, infant remained in his home cage after removal of mother; adjacent, infant was placed in a cage adjacent to its mother; and total, infant was totally isolated. The behavioral results indicated that the number of calls emitted differed with condition (adjacent?>?total?>?home), and the peak frequency of the calls and number of multiple calls was greatest in the total condition. Plasma cortisol elevations after separation differentiated the conditions of separation (total?>?adjacent?>?home?>?base). The elevations in the CSF catecholamine metabolites (3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol and homovanillic acid) were also sensitive to the conditions of separation (total?>?adjacent?>?base). A normal full-term baby boy, born by vaginal delivery, became ill on day 2 with fever and failure to feed. CSF examination revealed 260 x 10(6)/l leucocytes, mainly mononuclears, protein 2 g/l and glucose zero. Pasteurella multocida was isolated in pure culture from the baby's CSF, blood and umbilicus and from the mother's vagina. The baby was treated with i.v. penicillin for 7 weeks. Progress was complicated by mild hydrocephalus, which resolved, and prolonged low grade fever. Recovery was complete, without neurological sequelae. This case illustrates that P. multocida can infect the vagina where it presents a hazard to a newborn infant delivered vaginally. Early diagnosis is critical, intravenous high dose penicillin being the treatment of choice.  相似文献

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from 20 infants who died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), 7 cases of infectious death and 5 cases of violent death were examined with respect to concentrations of interleukin-6 (IL-6). The measurements were performed by ELISA. IL-6 levels in SIDS were significantly lower than in infectious death (p < 0.02), but significantly higher than in violent death (p < 0.02). Since IL-6 plays an important role in immune responses and may induce fever, the findings may suggest that immune activation plays a role in SIDS. The presence of cytokines in the central nervous system (CNS) may cause respiratory depression, especially in vulnerable infants.  相似文献

Diffuse villous hyperplasia of the choroid plexus, which is distinct from bilateral choroid plexus papillomas, is extremely rare and is often associated with hydrocephalus due to the overproduction of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The authors describe an infant with hydrocephalus, diagnosed by computerized tomography scanning, who developed ascites following placement of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt and, subsequently, demonstrated excessive CSF production when the shunt was externalized. The patient was later successfully treated by placement of a ventriculoatrial shunt. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated diffuse villous hyperplasia of the choroid plexus as the cause of the patient's hydrocephalus. The literature on diffuse villous hyperplasia of the choroid plexus is reviewed.  相似文献

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid, homovanillic acid, tryptophan, and gamma-aminobutyric acid were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography in 102 infants during the 1st year of life (preterm and term neonates included). CSF levels are expressed versus corrected age (postnatal days - preterm days) which reflects the stage of maturity of the central nervous system. These results are compared to those obtained in CSF of 53 victims of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). All components were significantly higher in SIDS than in the age-matched control group. This increase does not seem to be an artefact related to death. Indeed, under the same conditions concerning postmortem time interval before CSF sampling and analysis, the levels are not significantly higher in infants who died from a known pathology than in living infants. Moreover, in living infants as regards a pathology such as asphyxia or hypoventilation in comparison with SIDS, similar profiles are observed in some neurotransmitters or metabolites. Other studies are necessary to explore further neurotransmission systems in SIDS.  相似文献

This study examines sexual behavior, serotonin turnover in the central nervous system, and testosterone in free-ranging non-human primates. Study subjects were 33 young adult male rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) living in naturalistic social groups on a 475-acre South Carolina barrier island. Blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples were obtained during random trappings, and the subjects were located for observation by radio telemetry. Quantitative behavioral samples totaling 203 observation hours were taken during two mating seasons (September through January) in 1994 and 1995. Control observations (65 h) on 13 subjects were also taken during the non-mating seasons in 1994 and 1995. The results indicate that CSF 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), CSF testosterone, and plasma testosterone concentrations increase significantly during the mating season. During the mating season, there were significant increases in high intensity aggression, low intensity aggression, grooming behavior, and heterosexual mounting. In the mating season, CSF 5-HIAA was significantly correlated with several sociosexual behaviors: consorts per hour, heterosexual mounts per hour, and inseminations per hour. In contrast to previous findings from the non-mating season, CSF 5-HIAA was not correlated with any measures of aggression or sociality, although during consorting, CSF 5-HIAA was positively correlated with grooming. From these findings, we conclude that the lack of correlation between intense and severe aggression and CSF 5-HIAA in the mating season may reflect the use of high intensity aggression in 'normative' male-male competition over access to reproductively active females. We also conclude that CNS serotonin turnover is positively correlated with sexual competence, i.e. males with low CSF 5-HIAA concentrations are less sexually competent than males with higher concentrations.  相似文献

We studied whether there was an association between nerve conduction studies (NCS), CSF, and CD4-T lymphocyte parameters in a large cohort of HIV positive individuals. Two hundred and twenty-eight HIV positive individuals underwent motor and sensory nerve conduction studies, CSF evaluation, peripheral CD4-T lymphocyte count, and neurologic evaluation to determine the presence or absence of peripheral neuropathy. We compared NCS of HIV positive subjects with and without abnormal CSF parameters in the entire cohort. We also compared CSF parameters in a subset of CD4-matched patients with and without neuropathy. CSF abnormalities (in excess of laboratory norms) occurred frequently in the entire study group. There was no statistically significant relationship between NCS and CSF parameters. In addition, there was no significant difference in the CSF findings in the group of patients with clinical neuropathy compared to the group without neuropathy. However, there was an association (p < 0.05) between lower CD4 counts and NCS parameters. In general, abnormal CSF findings are not associated with deteriorating peripheral nerve function in HIV infected patients and are just as likely to be found in an HIV positive patient whether or not a peripheral neuropathy is present.  相似文献

The expression of heat shock proteins (hsp) within the target organ is implicated in the pathogenesis of a number of diseases of suspected autoimmune etiology, including MS. To pursue the potential role of a humoral response to the hsp 60/65 kd family in MS, we studied serum and CSF by Western blotting using recombinant Mycobacterium bovis hsp 65 and human hsp 60 as antigens and compared the findings with samples from patients with other neurologic diseases (OND). Analysis of the IgG response in CSF from 18 patients with MS indicated moderate reactivity in 10 cases and no reactivity in eight. In the OND group, reactivity was found in the CSF from one of two patients with Parkinson's disease, four of four Alzheimer's disease patients, and two of two patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. CSF samples from seven of seven patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis were negative, as were samples from two normal subjects. There was no reactivity in CSF from two Huntington's disease patients. We conclude that antibodies reactive with hsp 60/65 are present in CSF of some MS patients but are also present in a number of chronic neurodegenerative conditions. The findings indicate that a humoral response to hsp 60/65 in the CSF is not specific for MS.  相似文献

Cases of meningitis due to Bacteroides fragilis are rare; we report a case revealing a meningorectal fistula. CASE REPORT: A 2-month-old infant developed a severe sepsis syndrome following a rectosigmoidoscopy for rectal bleeding. Lumbar puncture diagnosed bacterial meningitis. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) culture evidenced B fragilis with betalactamase. The initial antibiotherapy was changed for imipenem-metronidazole, which is at present the recommended antibiotherapy. Malformation including pre-spinal tumor and meningorectal fistula was evoked on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and confirmed by surgery. The outcome was favorable after surgery and antibiotherapy. CONCLUSION: B fragilis meningitis are usually associated with sepsis, whose origin is obvious. In our case, meningitis was isolated, revealing a meningorectal fistula.  相似文献

Hallmark lesions of Alzheimer's disease (AD) are filled with reactive immunocompetent microglia, suggesting that immunological aberrations may participate in the pathophysiology of this disorder. Microglia may participate in the initial stages of neurodegeneration before the onset of dementia. If immune mediated processes are closely linked to neuronal breakdown it would be of importance to have a reliable means to detect these processes. Serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) antibodies are discussed as such potential sources. The serendipitous use of the developing rat central nervous system (CNS) to screen CSF antibrain antibodies produced some unexpected findings. Firstly, CSF antibodies of AD and other dementia patients recognized distinctly different neuronal structures in the developing rat brain. Secondly, some AD CSF recognized fiber networks whereas others recognized amoeboid microglial cells. The same AD CSF which recognized amoeboid microglia cells also specifically marked activated microglia and neural macrophages in experimentally induced lesions. AD CSF microglial antibodies appear to be significant in view of the increasing association between microglia and neurogenerative processes in AD. In addition, CSF microglial antibodies are present in numerous at-risk descendants of familial AD patients. Some have subsequently developed the disorder. These findings together with the fact that microglial antibodies are usually found in the early stages of AD suggest that AD CSF microglial antibodies could be of value in detecting neurodegenerative processes before the onset of dementia. These findings add further support to the concept that inflammation and similar immune mechanisms may contribute to AD pathogenesis.  相似文献

A newly advanced MRI pulse sequence, the FLAIR (fluid-attenuated inversion recovery) imaging, in which a long TE spin echo sequence is used with suppression of the CSF with an inversion pulse, displays the CSF space as a no signal intensity area. We examined 45 cases of mild head trauma with posttraumatic amnesia by FLAIR images and could detect some findings which could not be detected by CT scan and conventional MR images. These findings could be detected in many patients with long post-traumatic amnesia (over 2 hours), but they could not be detected in patients with short posttraumatic amnesia (within 30 mins). These findings existed surrounding lateral ventricles and we classified them into 3 types: type 1 is anterior horn of lateral ventricle, type 2 is the base of frontal lobe, type 3 is cerebral deep white matter. Some of them were examined again by FLAIR images a month later, and these findings had disappeared. We suspect that these lesions were brain edema or mild contusion without hemorrhage.  相似文献

We have prospectively studied 27 adult patients attending the Department of Infectious Diseases, G?teborg, Sweden, between October 1992 and October 1996 with a diagnosis of acute viral encephalitis. In addition to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) virus isolations and antibody analyses against herpes simplex virus, cytomegalovirus, varicella zoster virus, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), enterovirus, adenovirus, tick-borne encephalitis virus, and mycoplasma, polymerase chain reaction test (PCR) to 5 viruses from the family of human herpes viridae, and to adenovirus as well as to enterovirus were analysed in CSF. 10 patients had herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1), 1 had varicella zoster virus, 1 had tick-borne encephalitis, and 2 had Influenza A infections. In 13 patients the aetiology remained unclear. Eight patients with HSV-1 encephalitis and clinical symptoms for 2-11 d before admission were PCR-positive, while 2 patients with a < or = 2 d history of disease were negative for HSV-1 DNA on admission. These 2 patients became positive for HSV-1 DNA in CSF samples taken 4 d later in 1 case and 7 d later in the other. In 4 patients with HSV-1 encephalitis, in 1 patient with Influenza A complicated by encephalitis, and in 1 patient with encephalitis of unknown origin EBV DNA was found in CSF samples during the study. The clinical significance of these findings is unclear. The study shows that HSV-1 was the most common etiological agent in patients with viral encephalitis in the G?teborg area. In spite of improved diagnostic procedures, a large proportion of patients with symptoms and laboratory findings compatible with viral encephalitis still have an unclear aetiology.  相似文献

Hearing loss has been reported following leakage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The etiology has been attributed to an induced imbalance in the intracochlear hydrodynamics. The present study reports a guinea pig model with surgically induced loss of CSF. In 18 anesthetized animals, CSF was drained by a suboccipital incision in the dura: Eighteen animals were used as controls. The compound action potentials were recorded by an ear canal silver electrode. The animals with CSF loss showed a small increase in threshold and latency, while the control group was unchanged. The concept of an induced inner ear fluid dysfunction after CSF leak is supported by these findings.  相似文献

Recommendations to adopt the supine position were followed by a dramatic decrease of SIDS. But no explanation has been given for the association between SIDS and the prone position nor for its decrease in the supine position. We report data on an infant and a mannequin demonstrating an increase in temperature around the head in the prone position. A 4-month-old boy presented an acute life-threatening event related to temperature after febrile otitis despite treatment: 40.5 degrees C, heart rate 280 bpm with circulatory failure and cardiorespiratory arrest requiring resuscitation. There were no seizures. Blood and CSF cultures were negative. The course under antibiotics was favourable. On d 3, we measured temperature at several sites on and around the heat. Temperatures were higher in the prone than in the supine position in pericephalic areas: +1 degrees C (supracephalic), +2.5 degrees C (peritemporal), and +3.5 degrees C (submandibular). In a thermoregulated room, we used a mechanically ventilated mannequin of an infant. The prone position was also associated with an increase in temperature around the head: +3.3 degrees C (supracephalic), +1.8 degrees C (peritemporal), and +1.1 degrees C (submandibular). Changing from the supine to prone position thus increased temperature around the head (infant and mannequin). To our knowledge, this has not been reported before. SIDS is related to factors modifying temperature status and environment. Furthermore, evacuation of heat is mandatory for an infant. We think the increase in temperature around the head in the prone position is due to the absence of convective fluxes, and speculate it could impair thermolysis.  相似文献
