Micro/nano-scaled mechanical metamaterials have attracted extensive attention in various fields attributed to their superior properties benefiting from their rationally designed micro/nano-structures. As one of the most advanced technologies in the 21st century, additive manufacturing (3D printing) opens an easier and faster path for fabricating micro/nano-scaled mechanical metamaterials with complex structures. Here, the size effect of metamaterials at micro/nano scales is introduced first. Then, the additive manufacturing technologies to fabricate mechanical metamaterials at micro/nano scales are introduced. The latest research progress on micro/nano-scaled mechanical metamaterials is also reviewed according to the type of materials. In addition, the structural and functional applications of micro/nano-scaled mechanical metamaterials are further summarized. Finally, the challenges, including advanced 3D printing technologies, novel material development, and innovative structural design, for micro/nano-scaled mechanical metamaterials are discussed, and future perspectives are provided. The review aims to provide insight into the research and development of 3D-printed micro/nano-scaled mechanical metamaterials.  相似文献

Three-dimensional photonic metamaterials at optical frequencies   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Metamaterials are artificially structured media with unit cells much smaller than the wavelength of light. They have proved to possess novel electromagnetic properties, such as negative magnetic permeability and negative refractive index. This enables applications such as negative refraction, superlensing and invisibility cloaking. Although the physical properties can already be demonstrated in two-dimensional (2D) metamaterials, the practical applications require 3D bulk-like structures. This prerequisite has been achieved in the gigahertz range for microwave applications owing to the ease of fabrication by simply stacking printed circuit boards. In the optical domain, such an elegant method has been the missing building block towards the realization of 3D metamaterials. Here, we present a general method to manufacture 3D optical (infrared) metamaterials using a layer-by-layer technique. Specifically, we introduce a fabrication process involving planarization, lateral alignment and stacking. We demonstrate stacked metamaterials, investigate the interaction between adjacent stacked layers and analyse the optical properties of stacked metamaterials with respect to an increasing number of layers.  相似文献

Bending and folding techniques such as origami and kirigami enable the scale‐invariant design of 3D structures, metamaterials, and robots from 2D starting materials. These design principles are especially valuable for small systems because most micro‐ and nanofabrication involves lithographic patterning of planar materials. Ultrathin films of inorganic materials serve as an ideal substrate for the fabrication of flexible microsystems because they possess high intrinsic strength, are not susceptible to plasticity, and are easily integrated into microfabrication processes. Here, atomic layer deposition (ALD) is employed to synthesize films down to 2 nm thickness to create membranes, metamaterials, and machines with micrometer‐scale dimensions. Two materials are studied as model systems: ultrathin SiO2 and Pt. In this thickness limit, ALD films of these materials behave elastically and can be fabricated with fJ‐scale bending stiffnesses. Further, ALD membranes are utilized to design micrometer‐scale mechanical metamaterials and magnetically actuated 3D devices. These results establish thin ALD films as a scalable basis for micrometer‐scale actuators and robotics.  相似文献

Mechanical metamaterials inspired by the Japanese art of paper folding have gained considerable attention because of their potential to yield deployable and highly tunable assemblies. The inherent foldability of origami structures enlarges the material design space with remarkable properties such as auxeticity and high deformation recoverability and deployability, the latter being key in applications where spatial constraints are pivotal. This work integrates the results of the design, 3D direct laser writing fabrication, and in situ scanning electron microscopic mechanical characterization of microscale origami metamaterials, based on the multimodal assembly of Miura‐Ori tubes. The origami‐architected metamaterials, achieved by means of microfabrication, display remarkable mechanical properties: stiffness and Poisson’s ratio tunable anisotropy, large degree of shape recoverability, multistability, and even reversible auxeticity whereby the metamaterial switches Poisson’s ratio sign during deformation. The findings here reported underscore the scalable and multifunctional nature of origami designs, and pave the way toward harnessing the power of origami engineering at small scales.  相似文献

Rationally designed artificial materials, called metamaterials, allow for tailoring effective material properties beyond (“meta”) the properties of their bulk ingredient materials. This statement is especially true for chiral metamaterials, as unlocking certain degrees of freedom necessarily requires broken centrosymmetry. While the field of chiral electromagnetic/optical metamaterials has become rather mature, the field of elastic/mechanical metamaterials is just emerging and wide open. This research news reviews recent theoretical and experimental progress concerning 3D chiral mechanical and optical metamaterials, with special emphasis on work performed at KIT.  相似文献

Metamaterials with adjustable, sometimes unusual properties offer advantages over conventional materials with predefined mechanical properties in many technological applications. A group of metamaterials, called modular metamaterials or metastructures, are developed through the arrangement of multiple, mostly similar building blocks. These modular structures can be assembled using prefabricated modules and reconfigured to promote efficiency and functionality. Herein, a novel modular metastructure is developed by taking advantage of the high compliance of preprogrammable double-spirals. First, the mechanical behavior of a four-module metastructure under tension, compression, rotation, and sliding is simulated using the finite-element method. Then, 3D printing and mechanical testing are used to illustrate the tunable anisotropic and asymmetric behavior of the spiral-based metastructures in practice. The results show the simple reconfiguration of the presented metastructure toward the desired functions. The mechanical behavior of single double-spirals and the characteristics that can be achieved through their combinations make our modular metastructure suitable for various applications in robotics, aerospace, and medical engineering.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

To demonstrate printability and fire performance of 3D printable fibre reinforced cementitious materials at elevated temperatures, large-scaling printing and fire performance testing are required for engineering applications. In this work, a mixture design of 3D printable fibre reinforced cementitious composite (3DPFRCC) for large-scale printing was developed. A structure with dimensions of 78 × 60 × 90?cm (L × W × H) was printed by a gantry printer in 150?min, which demonstrates that the developed 3DPFRCC mixture possesses good buildability. The rheological property, setting-time, and mechanical properties under normal and elevated temperatures of the developed 3DPFRCC were then characterised. Final results indicate that the developed 3DPFRCC is suitable for engineering applications due to its good printability and mechanical properties under normal and elevated temperatures.  相似文献

Graphene, a two-dimensional, single-layer sheet of sp(2) hybridized carbon atoms, has attracted tremendous attention and research interest, owing to its exceptional physical properties, such as high electronic conductivity, good thermal stability, and excellent mechanical strength. Other forms of graphene-related materials, including graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, and exfoliated graphite, have been reliably produced in large scale. The promising properties together with the ease of processibility and functionalization make graphene-based materials ideal candidates for incorporation into a variety of functional materials. Importantly, graphene and its derivatives have been explored in a wide range of applications, such as electronic and photonic devices, clean energy, and sensors. In this review, after a general introduction to graphene and its derivatives, the synthesis, characterization, properties, and applications of graphene-based materials are discussed.  相似文献

Materials research plays a vital role in transforming breakthrough scientific ideas into next‐generation technology. Similar to the way silicon revolutionized the microelectronics industry, the proper materials can greatly impact the field of plasmonics and metamaterials. Currently, research in plasmonics and metamaterials lacks good material building blocks in order to realize useful devices. Such devices suffer from many drawbacks arising from the undesirable properties of their material building blocks, especially metals. There are many materials, other than conventional metallic components such as gold and silver, that exhibit metallic properties and provide advantages in device performance, design flexibility, fabrication, integration, and tunability. This review explores different material classes for plasmonic and metamaterial applications, such as conventional semiconductors, transparent conducting oxides, perovskite oxides, metal nitrides, silicides, germanides, and 2D materials such as graphene. This review provides a summary of the recent developments in the search for better plasmonic materials and an outlook of further research directions.  相似文献

The importance of three-dimensional (3D) graphene-based macrostructures (GBMs) is increasingly being recognized over the last five years for diverse clean energy-related applications and global climate change mitigation. With exceptionally large specific surface area and highly interconnected pore networks, 3D graphene scaffolds manifest extraordinary nanoscale effects that result in materials with unusual electrical, mechanical, and electrochemical properties. A global multidisciplinary research effort focusing on the development of innovative 3D GBMs with hierarchical microstructures and novel functionalities has therefore recently emerged. This review provides a comprehensive account of the key design principles in preparing high performance 3D GBMs and discusses their application as advanced electrode materials in a range of energy storage and conversion devices, including lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells, dye-sensitized solar cells, and photoelectrochemical water splitting units. In addition, the review provides insights into newer and emerging sustainable energy applications of 3D GBMs, such as adsorbents for high-density hydrogen storage and selective capture of CO2 from flue gases, as well as catalysts for photoconversion of CO2 into clean fuels and value-added chemicals. The current state of knowledge is highlighted for each of the applications, followed by a discussion of our own perspectives on each topic. Finally, the future outlook on practical deployment of 3D GBMs is suggested as concluding remarks.  相似文献

Materials that are lightweight yet exhibit superior mechanical properties are of compelling importance for several technological applications that range from aircrafts to household appliances. Lightweight materials allow energy saving and reduce the amount of resources required for manufacturing. Researchers have expended significant efforts in the quest for such materials, which require new concepts in both tailoring material microstructure as well as structural design. Architectured materials, which take advantage of new engineering paradigms, have recently emerged as an exciting avenue to create bespoke combinations of desired macroscopic material responses. In some instances, rather unique structures have emerged from advanced geometrical concepts (e.g. gyroids, menger cubes, or origami/kirigami-based structures), while in others innovation has emerged from mimicking nature in bio-inspired materials (e.g. honeycomb structures, nacre, fish scales etc.). Beyond design, additive manufacturing has enabled the facile fabrication of complex geometrical and bio-inspired architectures, using computer aided design models. The combination of simulations and experiments on these structures has led to an enhancement of mechanical properties, including strength, stiffness and toughness. In this review, we provide a perspective on topologically engineered architectured materials that exhibit optimal mechanical behaviour and can be readily printed using additive manufacturing.  相似文献

Topological mechanical metamaterials have emerged with the development of topological phases and topological phase transitions in modern condensed matter physics. Their attractive topological properties provide promising applications that are hard to achieve with traditional mechanical metamaterials, such as waveguiding without backscattering loss, vibration isolation, and free motion of structures. In this review, we briefly retrospectively examine the most flourishing works on topological mechanical metamaterials and identify the mechanisms underlying these topological mechanical phases, such as analogs to quantum Hall effects and Weyl semimetals. Topological mechanical phases are classified into two categories of t depending on their behavior when working in different frequency domains, as finite frequency properties (ω ≠ 0) are related to elastic wave propagation and zero frequency properties (ω = 0) are related to quasi-static free motion. We conclude by outlining future challenges and opportunities for the topological mechanism, and the design/fabrication and application of topological mechanical metamaterials.  相似文献

High-precision 3D printing technology opens to almost endless opportunities to design complex shapes present in tailored architected materials. The scope of this work is to review the latest studies regarding 3D printed lattice structures that involve the use of photopolymers fabricated by Material Jetting (MJ), with a focus on the widely used Polyjet and MultiJet techniques. The main aspects governing this printing process are introduced to determine their influence during the fabrication of 3D printed lattices. Performed experimental studies, considered assumptions, and constitutive models for the respective numerical simulations are analyzed. Furthermore, an overview of the latest extensively studied 3D printed architected lattice materials is exposed by emphasizing their achieved mechanical performances through the use of Ashby plots. Then, we highlight the advantages, limitations, and challenges of the material jetting technology to manufacture tunable architected materials for innovative devices, oriented to several engineering applications. Finally, possible approaches for future works and gaps to be covered by further research are indicated, including cost and environmental-related issues.  相似文献

Metamaterials, artificially structured electromagnetic (EM) materials, have enabled the realization of many unconventional EM properties not found in nature, such as negative refractive index, magnetic response, invisibility cloaking, and so on. Based on these man‐made materials with novel EM properties, various devices are designed and realized. However, quantum analog devices based on metamaterials have not been achieved so far. Here, metamaterials are designed and printed to perform quantum search algorithm. The structures, comprising of an array of 2D subwavelength air holes with different radii perforated on the dielectric layer, are fabricated using a 3D‐printing technique. When an incident wave enters in the designed metamaterials, the profile of beam wavefront is processed iteratively as it propagates through the metamaterial periodically. After roundtrips, precisely the same as the efficiency of quantum search algorithm, searched items will be found with the incident wave all focusing on the marked positions. Such a metamaterial‐based quantum searching simulator may lead to remarkable achievements in wave‐based signal processors.  相似文献

The concept of metamaterials originates from the proposal of left-hand materials with negative refractive index, followed by which, varieties of metamaterials with kinds of fantastic properties that cannot be found in natural materials, such as zero/negative Poisson’s ratio, electromagnetic/acoustic/thermal cloaking effect, etc., were come up with. According to their application fields, the metamaterials are roughly classified into four categories, electromagnetic metamaterials, acoustic metamaterials, thermal metamaterials, and mechanical metamaterials. By designing structures and arranging the distribution of materials with different physical parameters, the function of metamaterials can be realized in theory. Additive manufacturing (AM) technology provides a more direct and efficient way to achieve a sample of metamaterial and experiment verification due to the great advantages in fabricating complex structures. In this review, we introduce the typical metamaterials in different application situations and their design methods. In particular, we are focused on the fabrication of metamaterials and the application status of AM technology in them. Furthermore, we discuss the limits of present metamaterials in the aspect of design method and the disadvantages of existing AM technology, as well as the development tendency of metamaterials.  相似文献
