A study was undertaken to simulate the thinning behavior of titanium 6Al-4V alloy sheet during Superplastic Forming and to
evaluate the feasibility of controlling thinning in areas of interest with Friction Stir Processing (FSP) of the material.
The commercially available Finite Element Analysis software ABAQUS was used to execute these simulations. Material properties
of the parent sheet and the Friction Stir Processed regions input into the models were determined experimentally by elevated
temperature tensile testing. The results of these simulations were compared to experimental test results via Superplastically
Forming representative aerospace parts and analytical computations for validation. It was found that numerical simulations
can be used to predict the thin-out characteristics of superplastically formed titanium parts and the thin-out can be controlled
in desired areas by FSP, locally, prior to forming. 相似文献

New experimental data is presented on Forming Limits in Single Point Incremental Forming (SPIF), which is a sheet metal forming process which does not require dies. A Box-Behnken Design of Experiment is used to develop the experimental plan and analyze data. In former work, the most critical factors affecting Single Point Incremental Forming were found to be material type, material thickness, formed shape, tool size, and incremental step size. In this experimental work, new results are presented as graphical response surfaces which show the forming limit for all the critical factors listed previously. The determination of the superplastic properties of a material, just like any mechanical property, is highly dependent on
the test method, coupon geometry, and analysis of the raw data from the test. Thus the published properties of a material
from one source will differ from that of another source unless a common test method is employed. The ASTM E2448 Standard Test
Method for Determining the Superplastic Properties of Metallic Sheet Materials has been written to provide a common platform
for testing, evaluating, and publishing superplastic properties to a uniform format, useful for both academia and industry.
The Boeing Company is now using ASTM 2448 to quantify the superplastic properties of fine grain Ti-6Al-4V alloy, and is specifying
it to qualify production material to the Boeing Material Standard BMS7-385. The standard includes specimen geometry and testing
conditions, the test machine requirements, and how to analyze the data, including the basic stress vs. strain curve and determination
of ‘m’ value.
