Presents a rationale for a new focus for curriculum. Recent studies have shown that the "hidden agenda" of schooling educates students' attitudes, values, and perceptions, and that personal/psychological education is taking place. Indirectly the student is learning to see himself, recognize his competence, and develop a sense of worth. It is suggested that, at minimum, the school reinforces the child in the psychological advantage or disadvantage with which he enters it. A new program of psychological education is outlined which includes experience-based learning laboratories, peer counseling, cross-age teaching, improvisational drama, film and communication, and self-analytic groups. Such procedures call for a different approach to the problems of secondary schooling by direct focus on the personal education of the pupil as a curriculum objective. (28 ref.) The curriculum at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine has evolved with a high priority on problem-based and life-long learning. As the information pool enlarges, a greater emphasis must be placed on the ability of physicians to access the biomedical literature following residency training. To foster information retrieval skills, our medical school has included on the ability of physicians to access the biomedical literature following residency training. To foster information retrieval skills, our medical school has included on-line searching instruction since 1987. On-line classes are taught by experienced medical librarians during the second month of the first year curriculum. After receiving training, students are assigned a code via Grateful Med software. The purpose of the study was to measure the long-term effectiveness of this training approach and to determine the students' ability to formulate a search strategy and run a search to answer clinical questions at the third year level. During the 1990-1991 school year, all third year students were asked to use Grateful Med to answer two questions related to surgical patient care and to complete a questionnaire showing how they use Grateful Med and how they view their training. The students' searches were compared to "gold standard" searches run by an experienced medical librarian. Nineteen percent of all searches resulted in zero retrieval, and the remainder missed 74-100% of the gold standard available citations. Additional instruction shortly after on-line training could identify problem areas (poor search behavior) and information retrieval skills should be integrated and encouraged in all levels of the curriculum.  相似文献

A sixth grade curriculum entitled "Immunization, Plus!" Was developed to promote adolescent immunization. This targeted immunization curriculum utilized contemporary learning theory and innovative teaching approaches and styles to maximize acceptability among educators. Because instructional time in school was limited, a thematic curriculum was created to embed immunization and communicable disease content within mathematics, science/health, and language arts units. The curriculum, which reflected the theory of multiple intelligences among students, offered an array of different learning formats, including linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, and bodily-kinesthetic. The curriculum was made available free of charge to school districts in California, and its evaluation was planned to track distribution, utilization, and changes in students' knowledge, attitude, and behavior.  相似文献

Comments on articles in the November 1997 issue of American Psychologist concerning student evaluations of teaching (SETs). The current author notes that though SETs are widely used as an easy and objective means to evaluate teachers, their use has produced an unintended consequence—grade inflation, a primary contributor to declining academic standards and the "dumbing-down" of the curriculum. It is contended that the practice of inflating grades to increase SET ratings suggests a lack of integrity. The goal of this study was to analyse students' perceptions of anatomy teaching. A questionnaire was distributed to two classes of first year dental students taught anatomy in both problem-based learning (PBL) and traditional formats. The questionnaire explored the students' most preferred techniques for learning anatomy, their examination preferences and their perceived level of mastery of anatomy. Fifty-seven (95%) students completed the survey. The most commonly used study aids were atlases, dissection and lecture notes (in descending order). Students expressed the desire for the final examination to include both written and oral components. Six months after the final examination, the students reported their perceived level of mastery of anatomy as either "very good" or "OK". Even in the PBL curriculum 39% of both classes felt it is necessary to have quizzes during the course to motivate and guide them in studying anatomy.  相似文献
