Interpenetrating networks of varying percentages of bismaleimide (BMI) in vinyl ester oligomer (VEO) modified unsaturated polyester (UP) matrices have been developed. Vinyl ester oligomer was prepared by reacting commercially available epoxy resin GY 250 (Ciba‐Geigy) and acrylic acid, and used as a toughening agent for unsaturated polyester resin. Unsaturated polyesters modified with 10, 20, and 30 wt % vinyl ester oligomer were made. The VEO toughened unsaturated polyester matrix systems, further modified with 5, 10, and 15 wt % bismaleimide (BMI). BMI–VEO–UP matrices were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and heat deflection temperature analysis. The matrices, in the form of castings, were characterized for their mechanical properties according to ASTM methods: tensile strength, flexural strength, and unnotched Izod impact test. Data obtained from mechanical studies and thermal characterization indicate that the introduction of VEO and BMI into unsaturated polyester resin improves thermomechanical properties according to their percentage concentration. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An intercrosslinked network of polysulfone (PSF)—bismaleimide (BMI) modified epoxy matrix system was made by using diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy resin, hydroxyl terminated polysulfone and bismaleimide (3,3′‐bis(maleimidophenyl) phenylphosphine oxide) with diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) as curing agent. BMI–PSF–epoxy matrices were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and heat deflection temperature (HDT) analysis. The matrices, in the form of castings, were characterized for their mechanical properties such as tensile strength, flexural strength, and unnotched Izod impact test as per ASTM methods. Mechanical studies indicated that the introduction of polysulfone into epoxy resin improves the toughness to an appreciable extent with insignificant increase in stress–strain properties. DSC studies indicated that the introduction of polysulfone decreases the glass transition temperature, whereas the incorporation of bismaleimide into epoxy resin influences the mechanical and thermal properties according to its percentage content. DSC thermograms of polysulfone as well as BMI modified epoxy resin show a unimodal reaction exotherm. The thermal stability and flame retardant properties of cured epoxy resins were improved with the introduction of bismaleimide and polysulfone. Water absorption characteristics were studied as per ASTM method and the morphology of the BMI modified epoxy and PSF‐epoxy systems were studied by scanning electron microscope. POLYM. An intercrosslinked network of unsaturated polyester–bismaleimide modified epoxy matrix systems was developed. Epoxy systems modified with 10, 20, and 30% (by weight) of unsaturated polyester were made by using epoxy resin and unsaturated polyester with benzoyl peroxide and diaminodiphenylmethane as curing agents. The reaction between unsaturated polyester and epoxy resin was confirmed by IR spectral studies. The unsaturated polyester toughened epoxy systems were further modified with 5, 10, and 15% (by weightt) of bismaleimide (BMI). The matrices, in the form of castings, were characterized for their mechanical properties. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of the matrix samples were performed to determine the glass transition temperature (Tg) and thermal degradation temperature of the systems, respectively. Mechanical properties, viz: tensile strength, flexural strength, and plain strain fracture toughness of intercrosslinked epoxy systems, were studied by ASTM methods. Data obtained from mechanical and thermal studies indicated that the introduction of unsaturated polyester into epoxy resin improves toughness but with a reduction in glass transition, whereas the incorporation of bismaleimide into epoxy resin improved both mechanical strength and thermal behavior of epoxy resin. The introduction of bismaleimide into unsaturated polyester‐modified epoxy resin altered thermomechanical properties according to their percentage concentration. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel hybrid intercrosslinked networks of hydroxyl‐terminated polydimethylsiloxane‐modified epoxy and bismaleimide matrix systems have been developed. Epoxy systems modified with 5, 10, and 15 wt % of hydroxyl‐terminated polydimethylsiloxane (HTPDMS) were developed by using epoxy resin and hydroxyl‐terminated polydimethylsiloxane with γ‐aminopropyltriethoxysilane (γ‐APS) as compatibilizer and dibutyltindilaurate as catalyst. The reaction between hydroxyl‐terminated polydimethylsiloxane and epoxy resin was confirmed by IR spectral studies. The siliconized epoxy systems were further modified with 5, 10, and 15 wt % of bismaleimide (BMI). The matrices, in the form of castings, were characterized for their mechanical properties. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis of the matrix samples were also performed to determine the glass‐transition temperature and thermal‐degradation temperature of the systems. Data obtained from mechanical studies and thermal characterization indicate that the introduction of siloxane into epoxy improves the toughness and thermal stability of epoxy resin with reduction in strength and modulus values. Similarly the incorporation of bismaleimde into epoxy resin improved both tensile strength and thermal behavior of epoxy resin. However, the introduction of siloxane and bismaleimide into epoxy enhances both the mechanical and thermal properties according to their percentage content. Among the siliconized epoxy/bismaleimide intercrosslinked matrices, the epoxy matrix having 5% siloxane and 15% bismaleimide exhibited better mechanical and thermal properties than did matrices having other combinations. The resulting siliconized (5%) epoxy bismaleimide (15%) matrix can be used in the place of unmodified epoxy for the fabrication of aerospace and engineering composite components for better performance. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Epoxy resin has been chemically modified using 4, 8, and 12% of bisphenol-A based polysulphone along with three types of bismaleimides, namely [N, N′-bismaleimido-4,4′-diphenylmethane (BMI-1), 1,3-bis (maleimido) benzene (BMI-2) and 1,1′-bis (4-maleimidophenyl) cyclohexane (BMI-3)]. The epoxy hybrid matrices developed, in the form of castings, were used to characterize their mechanical properties like tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural strength, flexural modulus, impact strength, hardness, and dynamic mechanical analysis as per ASTM standards. Data obtained from mechanical studies indicate that the introduction of hydroxyl terminated polysulfone into epoxy resin enhanced the value of impact strength to the extent of 48% due to the formation of flexible graft structures. Similarly, the incorporation of bismaleimides into epoxy resin also improved both tensile and flexural behavior of epoxy resin. Further, the introduction of combination of both polysulfone and bismaleimides into epoxy resin improved the mechanical properties according to their percentage content. Among the bismaleimides-modified polysulfone epoxy matrices, the epoxy matrix modified with 8% polysulfone and 8% BMI-2 exhibited better mechanical properties than other modified epoxy matrices.  相似文献

An intercrosslinked network of varying percentages of N,N′-bismaleimido-4,4′-disphenyl methane (BMI), vinyl ester oligomer (VEO) modified unsaturated polyester (UP) matrices have been developed. Vinyl ester oligomer was prepared by reacting commercially available epoxy resin GY 250 (Ciba-Geigy) and acrylic acid was used as toughening agent for unsaturated polyester resin. The dielectric strength and water absorption measurements were also performed according to ASTM standards. Data obtained from mechanical studies, dielectric strength and water absorption indicate that the introduction of VEO into unsaturated polyester resin improves mechanical properties and affects the moisture resistance according to its percentage concentration. Intercrosslinked networks of bismaleimide (BMI) modified polyurethane–epoxy systems were prepared from chain‐extended BMI and polyurethane modified epoxy and cured in the presence of 4,4′‐diaminodiphenylmethane. Infrared spectral analysis was used to confirm the grafting of polyurethane onto the epoxy skeleton. The prepared matrices were characterized by mechanical, thermal, and morphological studies. The results, obtained from the mechanical and thermal studies, reveal that the incorporation of polyurethane into epoxy increases the mechanical strength and decreases the glass‐transition temperature and thermal stability. The incorporation of chain‐extended BMI into polyurethane modified epoxy systems increases the thermal stability and both tensile and flexural properties, and decreases the impact strength and glass‐transition temperature. Surface morphologies of polyurethane modified epoxy and chain‐extended BMI modified polyurethane– epoxy systems were studied by scanning electron microscopy. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An intercrosslinked network of hybrid bismaleimide (BMI) modified vinyl ester oligomer–unsaturated polyester matrix systems have been developed. Vinyl ester oligomer (VEO) was used as a toughening agent for unsaturated polyester resin and was added in 2, 4, and 6% (by wt). Benzoyl peroxide was used as curing agent. The VEO‐toughened unsaturated polyester matrix systems were further modified with 5, 10, and 15% (by wt) of bismaleimide. Bismaleimides modified vinyl ester–unsaturated polyester matrices were characterized by mechanical (tensile strength, flexural strength, tensile modulus, flexural modulus, and impact strength), thermal [differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetic analysis (TGA), heat deflection temperature analysis (HDT)] and morphological studies [scanning electron microscope (SEM)] and water absorption. Data obtained from mechanical studies indicated that the introduction of VEO into unsaturated polyester resin improves the fracture toughness. The introduction of BMI into VEO incorporated unsaturated polyester resin enhanced both thermal and mechanical behavior. The scanning electron micrographs of fractured surfaces of VEO‐modified unsaturated polyester systems and BMI modified vinyl ester–unsaturated polyester matrices illustrate the presence of homogeneous morphology. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Interpenetrating polymer networks of bismaleimide‐modified polyurethane–epoxy systems were prepared using the aliphatic and aromatic bismaleimides‐ and polyurethane‐modified epoxy and cured in the presence of 4,4′‐diaminodiphenylmethane. Infrared spectral analysis was used to confirm the polyurethane‐crosslinked epoxy (PU–EP). The matrices developed were characterized by mechanical, thermal, electrical, and morphological studies. The results obtained from the mechanical studies indicate that the incorporation of polyurethane and bismaleimides into epoxy increased the tensile strength, flexural strength, and impact strength, according to their nature and percentage concentration. The results obtained from the thermal and electrical studies indicate that the incorporation of polyurethane into epoxy decreased the thermal properties (glass transition temperature, heat distortion temperature (HDT), thermal stability) and electrical properties (dielectric strength, volume and surface resistivity, and arc resistance). The incorporation of aromatic bismaleimide into the polyurethane‐modified epoxy system increased the glass transition temperature, thermal stability, and electrical properties. Decreased values of glass transition and HDT were obtained in the case of aliphatic bismaleimide‐modified polyurethane–epoxy system. Surface morphology of modified epoxy systems was studied using scanning electron microscopy, and it was found that the polyurethane‐modified epoxy systems exhibited heterogeneous morphology and bismaleimides‐modified epoxy systems showed a homogeneous morphology. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Curing of N,N,N′,N′‐tetraglycidyldiaminodiphenylmethane with new curing agents like 3,3′‐dichloro‐4,4′‐diaminodiphenylmethane and 2,2′‐dichloro‐4,4′‐diaminodiphenylmethane in comparison with diaminodiphenylmethane and 4,4′‐diaminodiphenylsulphone (DDS) was carried out using dynamic differential scanning calorimetry. The shelf life of various epoxy formulations was evaluated by the residual cure exotherm method. The glass‐transition temperatures of cured epoxy formulations were determined using dynamic mechanical analysis. The mechanical properties such as the tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural strength, and Izod impact strength were also evaluated and compared. The activation energy, frequency factor, and shelf life of chloro‐substituted hardener formulations were high as compared to those of unsubstituted hardener formulations. The marginal differences in the glass‐transition temperature, tensile strength, tensile modulus, and flexural strength and the small decrement in the Izod impact strength values were interpreted in terms of chlorine substitution. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Tert‐butyl hydroquinone–based poly(cyanoarylene ether) (PENT) was synthesized by the nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction of 2,6‐dichlorobenzonitrile with tert‐butyl hydroquinone using N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NMP) as solvent in the presence of anhydrous potassium carbonate in a nitrogen atmosphere at 200°C. PENT‐toughened diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A epoxy resin (DGEBA) was developed using 4,4′‐diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) as the curing agent. Scanning electron micrographs revealed that all blends had a two‐phase morphology. The morphology changed from dispersed PENT to a cocontinuous structure with an increase in PENT content in the blends from 5 to 15 phr. The viscoelastic properties of the blends were investigated using dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. The storage modulus of the blends was less than that of the unmodified resin, whereas the loss modulus of the blends was higher than that of the neat epoxy. The tensile strength of the blends improved slightly, whereas flexural strength remained the same as that of the unmodified resin. Fracture toughness was found to increase with an increase in PENT content in the blends. Toughening mechanisms like local plastic deformation of the matrix, crack path deflection, crack pinning, ductile tearing of thermoplastic, and particle bridging were evident from the scanning electron micrographs of failed specimens from the fracture toughness measurements. The thermal stability of the blends were comparable to that of the neat resin. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 100: 3536–3544, 2006  相似文献

This study is concerned with the preparation and mechanical characterization of bio-based polymers from renewable resources. Epoxidized soybean oil at various concentrations is cured with an amine curing agent. The prepared matrices have been chemically modified with three types of bismaleimides, namely N, N′-bismaleimido-4, 4′-diphenyl methane (BMI-1), 1,3-bis(maleimido)benzene(BMI-2) and 3,3′-bis(maleimido phenyl)phenyl phosphineoxide (BMI-3). The crosslinked matrices thus developed were characterized for their mechanical properties such as tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural strength, flexural modulus, and impact strength. The incorporation of bismaleimides in the soy-based matrices significantly enhances the mechanical properties. The morphological behavior of matrices is also studied using a scanning electron microscope. The results indicate that the bismaleimide-modified soy-based epoxy resin at appropriate concentration holds great potential as a replacement for petroleum-based materials in engineering applications.  相似文献

The synthesis and characterization of the vinyltriethoxysilane‐modified silica nanoparticles were investigated. It was shown that the vinyltriethoxysilane molecules had been successfully grafted onto the silica nanoparticles. The native and silane‐modified silica dispersions in N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone with the total solids contents within the range 1–6 wt % exhibited dramatically different flow behaviors. The polymerization of N,N′‐bismaleimide‐4,4′‐diphenylmethane (BMI) initiated by barbituric acid in the presence of the native or vinyltriethoxysilane‐modified silica nanoparticles were then carried out in γ‐butyrolactone (total solids content = 20%). The higher the level of silica, the better the thermal stability of the BMI/silane/silica composite particles. The silane‐modified silica particles significantly improved their dispersion capability within the continuous BMI oligomer matrix. Furthermore, the degree of dispersion of the vinyltriethoxysilane‐modified silica particles in the BMI oligomer matrix decreased with the weight percentage of silica based on total solids increased from 20 to 40 wt %. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hydroxy‐terminated poly(arylene ether nitrile) oligomers with pendent tert‐butyl groups (PENTOH) were synthesized by the nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction of 2,6‐dichlorobenzonitrile with tert‐butyl hydroquinone in N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone medium with anhydrous potassium carbonate as a catalyst at 200°C in a nitrogen atmosphere. The PENTOH oligomers were blended with diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A epoxy resin and cured with 4,4′‐diaminodiphenyl sulfone. The curing reaction was monitored with infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The morphology, fracture toughness, and thermomechanical properties of the blends were investigated. The scanning electron micrographs revealed a two‐phase morphology with a particulate structure of the PENTOH phase dispersed in the epoxy matrix, except for the epoxy resin modified with PENTOH with a number‐average molecular weight of approximately 4000. The storage modulus of the blends was higher than that of the neat epoxy resin. The crosslink density calculated from the storage modulus in the rubbery plateau region decreased with an increase in PENTOH in the blends. The fracture toughness increased more than twofold with the addition of PENTOH oligomers. The tensile strength of the blends increased marginally, whereas the flexural strength decreased marginally. The dispersed PENTOH initiated several toughening mechanisms, which improved the fracture toughness of the blends. The thermal stability of the epoxy resin was not affected by the addition of PENTOH to the epoxy resin. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 2007  相似文献

The hybrid material of EP‐POSS mixture was synthesized by the hydrolysis and condensation of (γ‐glycidoxypropyl) trimethoxysilane. A series of binary systems of EP‐POSS/epoxy blends, epoxy resin modified by silica nanoparticles (SiO2/epoxy), and ternary system of SiO2/EP‐POSS/epoxy nanocomposite were prepared. The dispersion of SiO2 in the matrices was evidenced by transmission electron micrograph, and the mechanical properties, that is, flexural strength, flexural modulus, and impact strength were examined for EP‐POSS/epoxy blends, SiO2/epoxy, and SiO2/EP‐POSS/epoxy, respectively. The fractured surface of the impact samples was observed by scanning electron micrograph. Thermogravimetry analysis were applied to investigate the different thermal stabilities of the binary system and ternary system by introducing EP‐POSS and SiO2 to epoxy resin. The results showed that the impact strength, flexural strength, and modulus of the SiO2/EP‐POSS/epoxy system increased around by 57.9, 14.1, and 44.0% compared with the pure epoxy resin, Ti, Tmax and the residues of the ternary system were 387°C, 426°C, and 25.2%, increased remarkably by 20°C, 11°C and 101.6% in contrast to the pure epoxy resin, which was also higher than the binary systems. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We investigated the tensile behavior of glass‐fiber‐filled polyacetal [i.e., polyoxymethylene (POM)], focusing on the mutual influence of the functional groups in the POM matrices and the glass binder system. The different POM matrices were compounded with three kinds of glass fibers (20 wt %) treated with different glass binders, namely, epoxy resin, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), and a mixture of TPU and epoxy resin. A good correlation between the tensile strength and elongation at break was observed, regardless of the difference in the glass binders. The composites based on the modified POM matrix, which had both a carboxyl end group and a hydroxyl end group, improved the tensile properties noticeably in comparison with those based on the normal POM matrix. The composites were strengthened with an increase in the concentration of the functional groups. The results of scanning electron microscopy observations indicated that the fractured surfaces of a specimen having maximum tensile strength and elongation exhibited cohesion of the modified POM on the surfaces of the glass fibers. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amine‐terminated poly(arylene ether sulfone)–carboxylic‐terminated butadiene‐acrylonitrile–poly(arylene ether sulfone) (PES‐CTBN‐PES) triblock copolymers with controlled molecular weights of 15,000 (15K) or 20,000 (20K) g/mol were synthesized from amine‐terminated PES oligomer and commercial CTBN rubber (CTBN 1300x13). The copolymers were utilized to modify a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A epoxy resin by varying the loading from 5 to 40 wt %. The epoxy resins were cured with 4,4′‐diaminodiphenylsulfone and subjected to tests for thermal properties, plane strain fracture toughness (KIC), flexural properties, and solvent resistance measurements. The fracture surfaces were analyzed with SEM to elucidate the toughening mechanism. The properties of copolymer‐toughened epoxy resins were compared to those of samples modified by PES/CTBN blends, PES oligomer, or CTBN. The PES‐CTBN‐PES copolymer (20K) showed a KIC of 2.33 MPa m0.5 at 40 wt % loading while maintaining good flexural properties and chemical resistance. However, the epoxy resin modified with a CTBN/8K PES blend (2:1) exhibited lower KIC (1.82 MPa m0.5), lower flexural properties, and poorer thermal properties and solvent resistance compared to the 20K PES‐CTBN‐PES copolymer‐toughened samples. The high fracture toughness with the PES‐CTBN‐PES copolymer is believed to be due to the ductile fracture of the continuous PES‐rich phases, as well as the cavitation of the rubber‐rich phases. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A bisphenol A‐based epoxy resin was modified with pristine sepiolite and an organically surface‐modified sepiolite and thermally cured using two different curing agents: an aliphatic and a cycloaromatic diamine. The nanocomposites were characterized by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), rheology, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and electron microscopy. The initial sepiolite–epoxy mixtures show a better dispersion for the sepiolite‐modified system that forms a percolation network structure. Mechanical properties have also been determined. The flexural modulus of the epoxy matrix slightly increases by the incorporation of the organophilic sepiolite. The flexural strength of the sepiolite‐modified resin cured with the aliphatic diamine increased by 10%, while the sepiolite‐modified resin cured with the cycloaromatic diamine resulted in a lower flexural strength, as compared with the unmodified resin. Electron micrographs revealed a better nanodispersion of the sepiolite in the epoxy matrix for the organophilic modified sepiolite nanocomposite. The initial thermal decomposition temperature did not change significantly with the addition of sepiolite, whereas mechanical properties were affected. The reduced flexural strength was attributed to the stress concentrations caused by the sepiolite modifier. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

Organic–inorganic hybrids involving cyanate ester and hydroxyl‐terminated polydimethylsiloxane (HTPDMS) modified diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA; epoxy resin) filled with organomodified clay [montmorillonite (MMT)] nanocomposites were prepared via in situ polymerization and compared with unfilled‐clay macrocomposites. The epoxy‐organomodified MMT clay nanocomposites were prepared by the homogeneous dispersion of various percentages (1–5%), and the resulting homogeneous epoxy/clay hybrids were modified with 10% HTPDMS and γ‐aminopropyltriethoxysilane as a coupling agent in the presence of a tin catalyst. The siliconized epoxy/clay prepolymer was further modified separately with 10% of three different types of cyanate esters, namely, 4,4′‐dicyanato‐2,2′‐diphenylpropane, 1,1′‐bis(3‐methyl‐4‐cyanatophenyl) cyclohexane, and 1,3‐dicyanato benzene, and cured with diaminodiphenylmethane as a curing agent. The reactions during the curing process between the epoxy, siloxane, and cyanate were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared analysis. The results of dynamic mechanical analysis showed that the glass‐transition temperatures of the clay‐filled hybrid epoxy systems were lower than that of neat epoxy. The data obtained from mechanical studies implied that there was a significant improvement in the strength and modulus by the nanoscale reinforcement of organomodified MMT clay with the matrix resin. The morphologies of the siloxane‐containing, hybrid epoxy/clay systems showed heterogeneous character due to the partial incompatibility of HTPDMS. The exfoliation of the organoclay was ascertained from X‐ray diffraction patterns. The increase in the percentage of organomodified MMT clay up to 5 wt % led to a significant improvement in the mechanical properties and an insignificant decrease in the glass‐transition temperature versus the unfilled‐clay systems. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel bismaleimide‐modified siliconized epoxy intercrosslinked network systems were developed. Siliconized epoxy systems containing 5, 10, and 15% siloxane units were prepared using epoxy resin and hydroxyl‐terminated polydimethylsiloxane (HTPDMS) with γ‐aminopropyltriethoxysilane (γ‐APS) as a compatibilizer and dibutyltindilaurate as a catalyst. The siliconized epoxy systems were further modified with 5, 10, and 15% (wt %) of bismaleimide [(N,N′‐bismaleimido‐4,4′‐diphenylmethane) (BMI)] and cured by diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and heat‐distortion temperature measurement of the matrix samples were carried out to assess their thermal behavior. DSC thermograms of the BMI‐modified epoxy systems show unimodel reaction exotherms. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the cured BMI‐modified epoxy and siliconized epoxy systems increases with increasing BMI content. Thermogravimetric analysis and heat‐distortion temperature measurements indicate that the thermal degradation temperature and heat‐distortion temperature of the BMI‐modified epoxy and siliconized epoxy systems increase with increasing BMI content. The morphology of the BMI‐modified siliconized epoxy systems was also studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 81: 2330–2346, 2001  相似文献
