A xanthan gum‐gN‐vinyl formamide graft copolymer was synthesized through the graft copolymerization of N‐vinyl formamide (NVF) onto xanthan gum with an efficient system, that is, potassium monopersulfate (PMS)/Ag(I) in an aqueous medium. The effects of the concentrations of Ag(I), PMS (KHSO5), hydrogen ion, xanthan gum, and NVF along with the time and temperature on the graft copolymerization were studied by the determination of the grafting parameters (grafting ratio, add‐on, conversion, grafting efficiency, and homopolymer) and the rate of grafting. The maximum grafting ratio was obtained at a 0.6 g/dm3 concentration of xanthan gum. All the parameters showed an increasing trend with an increasing concentration of peroxymonosulfate, except the homopolymer percentage, which showed a decreasing trend. The grafting ratio, add‐on conversion, grafting efficiency, and rate of grafting increased with the concentration of Ag(I) increasing from 0.8 × 10?2 to 1.2 × 10?2 mol/dm3. The optimum time and temperature for the maximum degree of grafting were 90 min and 35°C, respectively. The graft copolymer was characterized with IR spectral analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential calorimetry analysis. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Graft copolymers of sodium carboxymethylcellulose with N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone were prepared in aqueous solutions with azobisisobutyronitrile as the initiator. The graft copolymers [sodium carboxymethylcellulose‐g‐poly(N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone)] were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and scanning electron microscopy. The grafting parameters, including the graft yield of the graft copolymer and the grafting efficiency of the reaction, were evaluated comparatively. The effects of reaction variables such as the time, temperature, and monomer and initiator concentrations on these parameters were studied. The graft yield and grafting efficiency increased and then decreased with increasing concentrations of N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone and azobisisobutyronitrile and increasing polymerization temperatures. The optimum temperature and polymerization time were 70°C and 4.30 h, respectively. Further changes in the properties of grafted sodium carboxymethylcellulose, such as the intrinsic viscosity, were determined. The overall activation energy for the grafting was also calculated to be 10.5 kcal/mol. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 104: 936–943, 2007  相似文献

Unreported graft copolymer of N,N′‐dimethylacrylamide (DMA) with partially carboxymethylated guar gum (CmgOH) has been synthesized and the reaction conditions have been optimized for affording maximum grafting using a potassium peroxymonosulphate (PMS)/thiourea (TU) redox initiators under nitrogen atmosphere. The study of graft copolymerization has been performed to observe maximum value of grafting parameters except percentage of homopolymer by varying the concentrations of DMA, PMS, and TU. The grafting parameters increase continuously on increasing the concentration of DMA from 8 × 10?2 to 24 × 10?2 mol dm?3, PMS from 5 × 10?3 to 21 × 10?3 mol dm?3, and TU from 1.6 × 10?3 to 4.8 × 10?3 mol dm?3. The optimum temperature and time for grafting of DMA onto CmgOH were found to be 35°C and 120 min, respectively. The water‐swelling capacity of graft copolymer is investigated. Flocculation property for both coking and noncoking coals is studied for the treatment of coal mine waste water. The graft copolymer is characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2010  相似文献

Polysaccharide based graft copolymer (xanthan gum‐g‐4‐vinyl pyridine) was synthesized using potassium peroxymonosulphate/ascorbic acid redox initiator in inert atmosphere at 40°C. By studying the effect of the concentration of monomer, peroxymonosulphate (PMS), ascorbic acid (AA), xanthan gum (XOH), hydrogen ion along with effect of time and temperature on grafting characteristics: grafting ratio (%G), add on (%A), conversion (%C), efficiency (%E), homopolymer (%H), and rate of grafting (Rg), the reaction conditions for optimum grafting were determined. The optimum concentration of AA, H+ ion, 4‐VP for maximum grafting were found to be 10.0 × 10?3 mol dm?3, 2.5 × 10?2 mol dm?3, 10.0 × 10?3 mol dm?3, respectively. Maximum %G was obtained at minimum concentration of xanthan gum i.e., at 40.0 × 10?2 g dm?3 and at maximum concentration of PMS i.e., at 10.0 × 10?3 mol dm?3. The optimum temperature and time duration of reaction for maximum % of grafting were found to be 45°C and 120 min respectively. The synthesized graft copolymer was characterized by FTIR analysis. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the xanthan gum‐g‐4‐vinyl pyridine is thermally more stable than pure gum. A probable mechanism was suggested for the graft copolymerization. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

Graft copolymerization of 4‐vinylpyridine (4‐VP) onto guar gum (GOH) using potassium monopersulfate (PMS)/thioacetamide (TAA) as a redox pair was studied in an aqueous medium under inert atmosphere. The concentration of potassium monopersulfate and thioacetamide should be 1.0 × 10?2 and 5.0 × 10?3 mol dm?3, respectively, for highest grafting ratio and efficiency. Efficient grafting was observed at 19.25 × 10?2 and 4.87 × 10?2 mol dm?3 concentration of 4‐vinylpyridine and sulfuric acid, respectively. The optimum temperature for grafting is 30°C. As the time period of reaction is increased, the grafting ratio increases, whereas efficiency decreases. The plausible mechanism of grafting has been suggested. A sample of guar gum and guar‐ g‐4‐vinylpyridine were subjected to thermogravimetric analysis with the objective of studying the effect of grafting 4‐vinylpyridine on the thermal stability of guar gum. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, graft copolymerization of N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone onto xanthan gum initiated by potassium peroxydiphosphate/Ag+ system in an aqueous medium has been studied under oxygen free nitrogen atmosphere. Grafting ratio, grafting efficiency, and add on increase on increasing the concentration of potassium peroxydiphosphate (2.0 × 10?3 to 12 × 10?3 mol dm?3), Ag+(0.4 × 10?3 to 2.8 × 10?3 mol dm?3), and hydrogen ion concentration from 2 × 10?3 to 14.0 × 10?3 mol dm?3. Maximum grafting has been obtained when xanthan gum and monomer concentration were 0.4 g dm?3 and 16 × 10?2 mol dm?3, respectively, at 35°C and 120 min. Water swelling capacity, swelling ratio, metal ion uptake, and metal retention capacity have also been studied, and it has been found that graft copolymer shows enhancement in these properties than pure xanthan gum. The graft copolymer has been characterized by FTIR and thermal analysis. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

The continued interest in graft copolymer architectures arises from their unique solution properties and potential for a myriad of applications ranging from drug delivery to adhesives. Poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) represents a popular amorphous, water‐soluble polymer used as a polymeric binder in binder jetting additive manufacturing, as fillers in cosmetic products, and for subcutaneous drug delivery systems. This report describes the synthesis of poly(2‐oxazoline) and PVP graft copolymers using a ‘grafting to’ methodology with an efficient thiol–ene ‘click’ reaction. Copolymerization of 2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline and 2‐(3‐butenyl)‐2‐oxazoline introduced pendent vinyl grafting sites with a predictable absolute number‐average molecular weight. In parallel, reversible addition‐fragmentation chain‐transfer polymerization and subsequent aminolysis yielded well‐defined, oligomeric, thiol‐terminated PVP. Thiol–ene click chemistry enabled the formation of poly(2‐oxazoline)‐graft‐poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PMeOx‐g‐PVP) copolymers with varying mole percent grafting sites and PVP graft length. 1H NMR spectroscopy, aqueous SEC with multiangle light scattering (SEC‐MALS), and bromine titrations confirmed chemical structure, and DSC with TGA elucidated thermal transitions. Aqueous SEC‐MALS and 1H NMR spectroscopy also determined absolute number‐ and weight‐average molecular weights and average grafting levels, which revealed optimal reaction conditions. Zero‐shear viscosities of 5 and 10 wt% solutions in deionized water for each graft copolymer compared to their linear analogs demonstrated a significant (ca 31%) decrease in viscosity at the same number‐average molecular weight. This decrease in solution viscosity suggested PMeOx‐g‐PVP copolymers as exceptional alternatives to linear analogs for aqueous‐based, binder jetting additive manufacturing.  相似文献

Polylactic acid (PLA) films were surface modified by gamma ray irradiation‐induced grafting of N‐vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP). The in vitro degradation behavior of polylactic acid grafting N‐vinyl pyrrolidone (PLA‐g‐PVP) copolymer was analyzed in terms of weight loss, molecular weight, and thermal properties. Grafting NVP significantly accelerated the degradation of PLA. The mass losses of the copolymers, which were less than that of pure PLA at the beginning of the degradation period, sharply accelerated with increasing degradation time. Moreover, the crystallization temperature decreased with increasing degradation time in the same graft ratio, and the degree of crystallinity increased. Cytotoxicity experiments and animal experiments in vivo were carried out to evaluate the biocompatibility of PLA‐g‐PVP copolymer. Varying graft ratios of PVP could control the degradation rate of copolymers, and thus broadening the applications of this material, such as in tissue engineering scaffolds, drug delivery, and prevention of postsurgical adhesion. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The free‐radical copolymerization of water‐soluble poly(1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone‐co‐hydroxyethylmethacrylate) was carried out with a feed monomer ratio of 75:25 mol %, and the total monomer concentration was 2.67M. The synthesis of the copolymer was carried out in dioxane at 70°C with benzoyl peroxide as the initiator. The copolymer composition was obtained with elemental analysis and 1H‐NMR spectroscopy. The water‐soluble polymer was characterized with elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared, 1H‐ and 13C‐NMR spectroscopy, and thermal analysis. Additionally, viscosimetric measurements of the copolymer were performed. The thermal behavior of the copolymer and its complexes were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry techniques under a nitrogen atmosphere. The copolymer showed high thermal stability and a glass transition in the DSC curves. The separation of various metal ions by the water‐soluble poly(1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone‐co‐hydroxyethylmethacrylate) reagent in the aqueous phase with liquid‐phase polymer‐based retention was investigated. The method was based on the retention of inorganic ions by this polymer in a membrane filtration cell and subsequent separation of low‐molar‐mass species from the polymer/metal‐ion complex formed. Poly(1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone‐co‐hydroxyethylmethacrylate) could bind metal ions such as Cr(III), Co(II), Zn(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), and Fe(III) in aqueous solutions at pHs 3, 5, and 7. The retention percentage for all the metal ions in the polymer was increased at pH 7, at which the maximum retention capacity could be observed. The interaction of inorganic ions with the hydrophilic polymer was determined as a function of the pH and filtration factor. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The optimum conditions for grafting N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone onto dextran initiated by a peroxydiphosphate/thiourea redox system were determined through the variation of the concentrations of N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone, hydrogen ion, potassium peroxydiphosphate, thiourea, and dextran along with the time and temperature. The grafting ratio increased as the concentration of N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone increased and reached the maximum value at 24 × 10?2 mol/dm3. Similarly, when the concentration of hydrogen ion increased, the grafting parameters increased from 3 × 10?3 to 5 × 10?3 mol/dm3 and attained the maximum value at 5 × 10?3 mol/dm3. The grafting ratio, add‐on, and efficiency increased continuously with the concentration of peroxydiphosphate increasing from 0.8 × 10?2 to 2.4 × 10?2 mol/dm3. When the concentration of thiourea increased from 0.4 × 10?2 to 2.0 × 10?2 mol/dm3, the grafting ratio attained the maximum value at 1.2 × 10?2 mol/dm3. The grafting parameters decreased continuously as the concentration of dextran increased from 0.6 to 1.4 g/dm3. An attempt was made to study some physicochemical properties in terms of metal‐ion sorption, swelling, and flocculation. Dextran‐gN‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone was characterized with infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

Using microwave (MW) irradiation grafting of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) onto guar gum in water was done without using any radical initiator or catalyst within a very short reaction time. The extent of grafting could be adjusted by controlling the reaction conditions and maximum percentage grafting (%G) of about 188% was obtained under optimum conditions in 1.66 min. The average molecular weight of the grafted PAN chains and water‐retention power of the alkali hydrolyzed MW‐grafted gums were also determined and compared with those of the conventionally synthesized (cs) graft copolymer. A representative MW‐grafted copolymer, guar‐g‐polyacrylonitrile was characterized by IR, NMR, XRD, TGA, and elemental analysis. A plausible mechanism for the grafting under MW was proposed. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 92: 1569–1575, 2004  相似文献

Cassia siamea seed polysaccharide was grafted with acrylonitrile under microwave (MW) irradiation without adding any radical initiator or catalyst. Free radicals are generated here due to the dielectric heating caused by the localized rotation of the hydroxyl groups at the polysaccharide backbone and initiate grafting. To obtain the optimal conditions for the microwave promoted grafting, effect of reaction variables such as monomer/seed gum concentration; MW power and exposure time on the graft copolymerization was studied and the maximum %grafting (%G) and %efficiency (%E) observed were 150% and 43.54%, respectively. The representative graft copolymer was characterized by Fourier transform‐infrared, Thermogravimetric analysis and X‐ray diffraction measurement, taking C. siamea gum as reference. At the same monomer concentration, K2S2O8/ascorbic acid initiated grafting onto the seed gum could result into 80% grafting with 23.22% efficiency. Various properties of the MW synthesized grafted gum like water/saline retention, water retention after saponification and viscosity of the gum solutions were studied. The results have been compared with the conventionally synthesized grafted gum and the parent gum. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 101: 2384–2390, 2006  相似文献

Radical copolymerizations of 1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone with acrylamide and N,N′‐dimethylacrylamide at different feed ratios were investigated. The copolymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The copolymer composition was determined from the 1H NMR spectra and found to be statistical. The metal complexation of poly(acrylamide‐co‐1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone) and poly(N,N′‐dimethylacrylamide‐co‐1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone) for the metal ions Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), Pb(II), Fe(III), and Cr(III) were investigated in an aqueous phase. The liquid‐phase polymer‐based retention method is based on the retention of inorganic ions by soluble polymers in a membrane filtration cell and subsequent separation of low‐molecular compounds from the polymer complex formed. The metal ion interaction with the hydrophilic polymers was determined as a function of the pH and the filtration factor. Poly(N,N‐dimethylacrylamide‐co‐1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone) showed a higher affinity for the metal ions than poly(acrylamide‐co‐1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone). According to the interaction pattern obtained, Cr(III) and Cu(II) formed the most stable complexes at pH 7. Pb(II) and Zn(II) were not retained. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A copolymer, poly(L ‐lactide)‐g‐poly(N‐vinyl pyrrolidone) (PLLA‐g‐PVP) was prepared with poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) and N‐vinyl pyrrolidone in the presence of methanol as a solvent by γ‐ray irradiation. The structure of PLLA‐g‐PVP was characterized by 1H‐NMR and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The PLLA‐g‐PVP graft ratio calculated by the percentage increase in weight increased with the increase of absorbed dose, and the percentage crystallinity of PLLA‐g‐PVP decreased with increasing graft ratio. The introduction of the poly(N‐vinyl pyrrolidone) chain into PLLA resulted in a decrease in the contact angle of PLLA‐g‐PVP with increasing graft ratio. In vitro degradation testing showed that PLLA‐g‐PVP had a higher degradation rate both in the weight‐loss test and molecular weight measurement because of a lower crystalline percentage and higher hydrophilicity compared to PLLA. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The graft copolymerization reaction of acrylamide onto guar gum with a vanadium(V)/mandelic acid redox pair was carried out in an N2 atmosphere. The optimum concentrations of vanadium(V), mandelic acid, hydrogen ions, acrylamide, and guar gum for the maximum percentage of grafting were 6.0 × 10?3, 2.0 × 10?2, 55.0 × 10?2, and 20.0 × 10?2 mol/dm3 and 110.1 × 10?2 g/dm3, respectively. The optimum time and temperature of reaction were 90 min and 35°C, respectively, and during the study of [H+] variation, a prompt change in the value of the grafting parameters was observed. The maximum percentage of swelling of the graft copolymer was achieved at room temperature in 1 h. Studies of the flocculation, viscosity, and metal‐ion absorption capacity were also performed. The synthesized graft copolymer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analyses, which showed that the grafted guar gum was thermally more stable than the ungrafted guar gum. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Alginate‐g‐vinyl sulfonic acid graft copolymer was synthesized through the graft copolymerization of vinyl sulfonic acid (VSA) onto alginate with an efficient system, i.e., potassium peroxydiphosphate (PDP)/thiourea in an aqueous medium. The effects of the concentration of thiourea, PDP, hydrogen ion, alginate, and VSA along with the time and temperature on the graft copolymerization were studied by the determination of the grafting parameters (grafting ratio, add‐on, conversion, grafting efficiency, and homopolymer). The synthesized graft copolymer was characterized by FTIR analysis. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the alginate‐g‐vinyl sulfonic acid is thermally more stable than alginate. Water swelling capacity, metal ion sorption, flocculation, and resistance to biodegradability studies of synthesized graft copolymer have been performed with respect to the parent polymer. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The graft polymerization of methyl methacrylate and butyl acrylate onto poly(vinyl chloride‐co‐vinyl acetate) with atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was successfully carried out with copper(I) thiocyanate/N,N,N,N,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine and copper(I) chloride/2,2′‐bipyridine as catalysts in the solvent N,N‐dimethylformamide. For methyl methacrylate, a kinetic plot of ln([M]0/[M]) (where [M]0 is the initial monomer concentration and [M] is the monomer concentration) versus time for the graft polymerization was almost linear, and the molecular weight of the graft copolymer increased with increasing conversion, this being typical for ATRP. The formation of the graft polymer was confirmed with gel permeation chromatography, 1H‐NMR, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The glass‐transition temperature of the copolymer increased with the concentration of methyl methacrylate. The graft copolymer was hydrolyzed, and its swelling capacity was measured. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 96: 183–189, 2005  相似文献

The objective of this research was the surface grafting polymerization of biocompatible monomer N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NVP) onto a plasma‐treated nonwoven poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) substrate with ultraviolet (UV)‐induced methods. The effects of various parameters, such as the monomer concentration, reaction time, initiator (ammonium peroxodisulfate) concentration, and crosslinking agent (N,N′‐methylene bisacrylamide) concentration, on the grafting percentage were studied. The grafting efficiency of the modified nonwoven PET surfaces reached a maximum at 50 min of UV irradiation and with a 30 wt % aqueous NVP solution. After the plasma activation and/or grafting, the hydrophobic surface of the nonwoven was modified into a hydrophilic surface. NVP was successfully grafted onto nonwoven PET surfaces. The surface wettability showed that the water absorption of NVP‐grafted nonwoven PET (NVP‐g‐nonwoven PET) increased with increasing grafting time. NVP‐g‐nonwoven PET was verified by Fourier transform infrared spectra and scanning electron microscopy measurements. An antibacterial assessment using an anti‐Staphylococcus aureus test indicated that S. aureus was restrained from growing in NVP‐g‐nonwoven PET. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Silicone rubber (SR), a material widely used in the biomedical field, was modified with stimuli‐responsive poly(N‐vinyl caprolactam) (PVCL) and poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) with the aim of improving its ability to host drug molecules. The grafting of PVCL and PMAA onto SR was carried out by means of a γ‐ray preirradiation method, and the dependence of the grafting yield on the comonomer concentration, preirradiation dose, temperature, and reaction time was evaluated. Modified SR films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and swelling studies to confirm the grafting of the copolymer. The SR‐g‐[vinyl caprolactam (VCL)/methacrylic acid (MAA)] copolymers showed a sensitivity to the temperature and pH, high hemocompatibility, and low affinity to bovine serum albumin and fibrinogen proteins. Moreover, the SR‐g‐(VCL/MAA) copolymers were able to host some nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs, such as diclofenac and ibuprofen, and the antifungal agent nystatin. The graft copolymer was shown to be useful for providing sustained release for several hours; this indicates that the modified SR is a promising material for drug‐eluting medical devices. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
