Methylene-bis-ortho-chloroanilline (MOCA), an excellent cross-linker widely used to prepare cured polyurethane (PU) elastomers with high performance, was used to modify a multi-walled carbon nanotube. PU/carbon nanotube (CNT) nanocomposites were prepared by incorporation of the MOCA-grafted CNT into PU matrix. Fourier transform infrared spectra have shown that the modified CNTs have been linked with PU matrix. The microstructure of composites was investigated by Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy. The results of Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analysis and Differential Scanning Calorimetry have investigated the grafted CNTs as cross-linker in the cured composites. The studies on the thermal and mechanical properties of the composites have indicated that the storage modulus and tensile strength, as well as glass transition temperature and thermal stability are significantly increased with increasing CNT content.  相似文献

The interest in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as reinforcements for aluminium (Al) has been growing considerably. Efforts have been largely focused on investigating their contribution to the enhancement of the mechanical performance of the composites. The uniform dispersion of CNTs in the Al matrix has been identified as being critical to the pursuit of enhanced properties. Ball milling as a mechanical dispersion technique has proved its potential. In this work, we use ball milling to disperse up to 5 wt.% CNT in an Al matrix. The effect of CNT content on the mechanical properties of the composites was investigated. Cold compaction and hot extrusion were used to consolidate the ball-milled Al–CNT mixtures. Enhancements of up to 50% in tensile strength and 23% in stiffness compared to pure aluminium were observed. Some carbide formation was observed in the composite containing 5 wt.% CNT. In spite of the observed overall reinforcing effect, the large aspect ratio CNTs used in the present study were difficult to disperse at CNT wt.% greater than 2, and thus the expected improvements in mechanical properties with increase in CNT weight content were not fully realized.  相似文献

Study was made of the effect of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and polymeric compatibilizer on thermal, mechanical, and tribological properties of high density polyethylene (HDPE). The composites were prepared by melt mixing in two steps. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were melt mixed with maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (PEgMA) as polymeric compatibilizer to produce a PEgMA-CNT masterbatch containing 20 wt% of CNTs. The masterbatch was then added to HDPE to prepare HDPE nanocomposites with CNT content of 2 or 6 wt%. The unmodified and modified (hydroxyl or amine groups) CNTs had similar effects on the properties of HDPE-PEgMA indicating that only non-covalent interactions were achieved between CNTs and matrix. According to SEM studies, single nanotubes and CNT agglomerates (size up to 1 μm) were present in all nanocomposites regardless of content or modification of CNTs. Addition of CNTs to HDPE-PEgMA increased decomposition temperature, but only slight changes were observed in crystallization temperature, crystallinity, melting temperature, and coefficient of linear thermal expansion (CLTE). Young’s modulus and tensile strength of matrix clearly increased, while elongation at break decreased. Measured values of Young’s moduli of HDPE-PEgMA-CNT composites were between the values of Young’s moduli for longitudinal (E11) and transverse (E22) direction predicted by Mori-Tanaka and Halpin-Tsai composite theories. Addition of CNTs to HDPE-PEgMA did not change the tribological properties of the matrix. Because of its higher crystallinity, PEgMA possessed significantly different properties from HDPE matrix: better mechanical properties, lower friction and wear, and lower CLTE in normal direction. Interestingly, the mechanical and tribological properties and CLTEs of HDPE-PEgMA-CNT composites lie between those of PEgMA and HDPE.  相似文献

The goal of the present study was to investigate the influence of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on the impact and after impact behaviour of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates. About 0.5% per weight MWCNTs were dispersed via a high shear device in the epoxy matrix (Bisphenol A) of carbon reinforced quasi-isotropic laminates. Subsequently, the modified CFRPs were subjected to low-energy impact and directly compared with unmodified laminates. In previous studies, the beneficial effect of the MWCNT inclusion to the fracture properties of CFRPs has been demonstrated. In terms of the CFRP impact performance, enhanced performance for the CNT doped specimens was observed for higher energy levels. However, the after-impact properties and more specifically compression after impact were improved for both the effective compression modulus and the compression strength. In addition, compression–compression fatigue after impact performance of the CNT modified laminates was also improved, by extending the fatigue life.  相似文献

This paper examines the recent advancements in the science and technology of carbon nanotube (CNT)-based fibers and composites. The assessment is made according to the hierarchical structural levels of CNTs used in composites, ranging from 1-D to 2-D to 3-D. At the 1-D level, fibers composed of pure CNTs or CNTs embedded in a polymeric matrix produced by various techniques are reviewed. At the 2-D level, the focuses are on CNT-modified advanced fibers, CNT-modified interlaminar surfaces and highly oriented CNTs in planar form. At the 3-D level, we examine the mechanical and physical properties CNT/polymer composites, CNT-based damage sensing, and textile assemblies of CNTs. The opportunities and challenges in basic research at these hierarchical levels have been discussed.  相似文献

This paper presents the development of glass fibres coated with nanocomposites consisting of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and epoxy. Single glass fibres with different CNT content coating are embedded in a polymer matrix as a strain sensor for composite structures. Raman spectroscopy and electrical response of glass fibres under mechanical load are coupled for in situ sensing of deformation in composites. The results show that the fibres with nanocomposite coating exhibit efficient stress transfer across the fibre/matrix interface, and these with a higher CNT content are more prone to fibre fragmentation at the same matrix strain. A relationship between the fibre stress and the change in electrical resistance against the fibre strain is established. The major finding of this study has a practical implication in that the fibres with nanocomposite coating can serve as a sensor to monitor the deformation and damage process in composites.  相似文献

Considerable experimental work on carbon nanotube-reinforced composites has shown that the reinforcement efficiency of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) becomes lower than the theoretical expectation when CNT content reaches a critical value. This critical volume fraction (percolation threshold) is considered related to the formation of percolating network. In this work, a percolation model is proposed to describe the observed sharp decrease in the reinforcement efficiency of multiwalled CNTs (MWCNTs) dispersed in thermoplastics when the CNT content exceeds the percolation threshold. The percolation threshold is estimated via a numerical simulation of randomly curved CNTs according to the statistics on geometrical features of real CNTs. The percolation model, integrated into the Halpin–Tsai equations, is verified using the experimental data of various thermoplastic composites reinforced with MWCNTs. The developed mechanical model achieves a good agreement with the measured moduli of nanocomposites, and demonstrates an excellent prediction capability over a wide range of CNT content.  相似文献

Composites have set the standard for high strength materials for several decades. With the discovery of nanotubes, new possibilities for reinforced composites have arisen, with potential mechanical properties superior to those of currently available materials. This paper reports the properties of epoxy matrix reinforced with fibres of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) which, in many ways, are similar to standard composites reinforced with commercial fibres. The composites were formed by the back diffusion of the uncured epoxy into an array of aligned fibres of CNTs. The fibre density and volume fraction were measured from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Properties in tension and compression were measured, and the level of fibre–matrix interaction analysed fractographically. The results show the significant potential for this route to CNT reinforcement.  相似文献

Hierarchical +1 composites consisting of carbon fibers with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) grown onto them and an epoxy matrix were processed, and the mode I fracture toughness of these composites was evaluated. The mode I fracture toughness of the initial batches of the hierarchical composites was lower than that of the baseline samples without CNTs. Hence, efforts to enhance the adhesion between carbon fibers and CNTs were made, resulting in enhanced adhesion. The enhanced adhesion was confirmed by Scotch tape tests and mode I fracture toughness tests followed by fractographic studies. The mode I fracture toughness of the hierarchical composites with enhanced adhesion was 51% and 89% higher than those of the baseline samples and hierarchical composites with poor adhesion, respectively. Moreover, fractographic studies of the fracture surfaces of the hierarchical composites with enhanced adhesion showed that CNTs were still attached to carbon fibers even after the mechanical tests.  相似文献

This paper presents an analytical and experimental study on the strain sensing behavior of carbon nanotube (CNT)-based polymer composites. Tensile tests were conducted on CNT/polycarbonate composites and the responses in the electrical resistance were measured during the tests. An analytical model incorporating the electrical tunneling effect due to the matrix material between CNTs was also developed to describe the electrical resistance change as a result of mechanical deformation. The model deals with the inter-nanotube matrix deformation at the micro/nanoscale due to the macroscale deformation of the nanocomposites. A comparison of the analytical predictions and the experimental data showed that the proposed model captures the sensing behavior. In addition, the effect of the micro/nanoscale structures on the strain induced resistance change was discussed to provide useful information for designing CNT-based polymer composites with high strain sensing capability.  相似文献

Mechanical and weight properties of polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) are measured and modeled at the interlaminar region, predicting the density and elastic modulus of individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs). A simple model of the CNTs density and elastic modulus within the PNC, accounting for fundamental material properties, geometry, and interactions, is developed, capable of predicting CNT contributions in the PNCs. Furthermore, the model is validated with experimental results that demonstrate enhancement of the elastic modulus, while reducing density in the presence of aligned CNTs. By establishing an inverse relation of density and elastic modulus (negative correlation), it is demonstrated the potential of increasing mechanical properties while reducing weight. Therefore, by introducing controlled nanoporosity through suitable CNT distributions within the interlayer of multi-lamina structures, it is possible to simultaneously control effective weight reduction and enhanced modulus, toward bio-inspired carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites.  相似文献

Multi-phase composites have been studied by incorporating carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a secondary reinforcement in an epoxy matrix which was then reinforced with glass fiber mat. Different types of CNTs e.g. amino functionalized carbon nanotubes (ACNT) and pristine carbon nanotubes (PCNT) were homogeneously dispersed in the epoxy matrix and two-ply laminates were fabricated using vacuum-assisted resin infusion molding technique. The issues related to CNT dispersion and interfacial bonding and its affect on the mechanical properties have been studied. An important finding of this study is that PCNT scores over ACNT in composites prepared under certain conditions. This is a very significant finding since PCNT is available at a much lower cost than ACNT.  相似文献

Carbon fiber felt with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were prepared by immersing three-dimensional (3D) felt into CNT aqueous solution (with dispersant) followed by removing water with different drying methods. Epoxy resin was then introduced into the felt to obtain 3D fiber felt/CNTs modified epoxy composites. This paper highlights the effect of drying method on macro-morphologies of the felt, morphological dispersion of CNTs and some relevant properties of the composites, including electrical conductivity and flexural performance. The results demonstrate that compared to the commonly used heat drying method, freeze drying technique possesses obvious advantages for the fabrication of fiber felt/CNT modified epoxy composites.  相似文献

In this study, CNT-A356 composites were prepared by reinforcing an aluminum alloy A356 matrix material with carbon nanotubes (CNT) in 4 different ratio (0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2) and the hardness, abrasion and microstructure properties of these composites were investigated. The powder metallurgy method was used in the production of composite samples. A356 powder and CNTs’ were mixed by ball milling for 1?hour and cold pressed in the powder compression mold. The mold was then taken into a functional oven and hot pressing was performed. The compacted powder bodies were sintered at 550° C for 1?hour in a 10?6 millibars vacuum environment. Hardness measurements, wear tests and microstructure analyzes of the produced samples were carried out. As a result of experimental studies; it has been observed that the CNTs’ are placed in bulk and between the matrix grains and a more hollow structure is formed by increasing the CNT ratio. Moreover, while the CNT ratio exceeded 1%, the hardness values decreased and weight loss increased. The highest hardness value was obtained in the composites containing 1% CNT.  相似文献

In this study carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were grown on carbon fibers to enhance the in-plane and out-of-plane properties of fiber reinforced polymer composites (FRPs). A relatively low temperature synthesis technique was utilized to directly grow CNTs over the carbon fibers. Several composites based on carbon fibers with different surface treatments (e.g. growing CNTs with different lengths and distribution patterns and coating the fibers with a thermal barrier coating (TBC) layer) were fabricated and characterized via on- and off-axis tensile tests. The on-axis tensile strength and ductility of the hybrid FRPs were improved by 11% and 35%, respectively, due to the presence of the TBC and the surface grown CNTs. This configuration also exhibited 16% improvement on the off-axis stiffness. Results suggest that certain CNT growth patterns and lengths are more pertinent than the other surface treatments to achieve superior mechanical properties.  相似文献

Compared to the small diameter of a carbon nanotube (CNT), the thickness of the CNT–matrix interphase in a CNT–composite is considerable. Hence, the interphase property can significantly influence the macroscopic properties of the composite. This paper applies an effective multi-scale method to explore such an interphase effect on the properties of nano-composites reinforced by single-walled CNTs. The method integrates the van der Waals (vdW) gap interphase, the dense interphase, and the randomly distributed wavy CNTs in a matrix to realize an accurate prediction of macroscopic properties with a nanoscopic resolution, by using a conventional finite element code commercially available. The study concluded that with the same volume fraction, increasing CNT waviness and diameter reduces the composite Young's modulus, and that ignoring either the vdW gap interphase or the dense interphase can lead to an erroneous characterization, and that both interphases can be ignored in some circumstances.  相似文献

The mechanical and thermo-mechanical properties of polybenzoxazine nanocomposites containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) functionalized with surfactant are studied. The results are specifically compared with the corresponding properties of epoxy-based nanocomposites. The CNTs bring about significant improvements in flexural strength, flexural modulus, storage modulus and glass transition temperature, Tg, of CNT/polybenzoxazine nanocomposites at the expense of impact fracture toughness. The surfactant treatment has a beneficial effect on the improvement of these properties, except the impact toughness, through enhanced CNT dispersion and interfacial interaction. The former four properties are in general higher for the CNT/polybenzoxazine nanocomposites than the epoxy counterparts, and vice versa for the impact toughness. The addition of CNTs has an ameliorating effect of lowering the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of polybenzoxazine nanocomposites in both the regions below and above Tg, whereas the reverse is true for the epoxy nanocomposites. This observation has a particular implication of exploiting the CNT/polybenzoxazine nanocomposites in applications requiring low shrinkage and accurate dimensional control.  相似文献

Utilizing the extra-ordinary properties of carbon nanotube (CNT) in metal matrix composite (MMC) for macroscopic applications is still a big challenge for science and technology. Very few successful attempts have been made for commercial applications due to the difficulties incorporating CNTs in metals with up-scalable processes. CNT reinforced copper and copper alloy (bronze) composites have been fabricated by well-established hot-press sintering method of powder metallurgy. The parameters of CNT–metal powder mixing and hot-press sintering have been optimized and the matrix materials of the mixed powders and composites have been evaluated. However, the effect of shape and size of metal particles as well as selection of carbon nanotubes has significant influence on the mechanical and electrical properties of the composites. The hardness of copper matrix composite has improved up to 47% compared to that of pure copper, while the electrical conductivity of bronze composite has improved up to 20% compared to that of the pure alloy. Thus carbon nanotube can improve the mechanical properties of highly-conductive low-strength copper metals, whereas in low-conductivity high-strength copper alloys the electrical conductivity can be improved.  相似文献

In the current study we investigated the effect of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) addition on the erosive wear response of epoxy resin and carbon fibre reinforced laminates (CFRPs) and demonstrated the positive synergy of CNTs and carbon fibres, which resulted in almost 50% decrease of the erosion rate (ER) of the CFRPs at high impact angles (90°). Incorporation of CNTs led in slight increase of the ER of the epoxy systems, especially at low impact angles. The relative fibre orientation in the CFRPs had a negligible effect on the erosive wear response mainly due to the quasi isotropic nature of the tested CFRPs. Based on the erosion efficiency parameter the response of the epoxy systems was characterised as semi-brittle, while CFRPs behaved in a brittle manner. Scanning electron micrograph provided evidence that the presence of CNTs reduced the amount of broken and/or detached fibres in the case of CFRPs.  相似文献
