Pure titanium matrix composite reinforced with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was prepared by spark plasma sintering and hot extrusion via powder metallurgy process. Titanium (Ti) powders were coated with CNTs via a wet process using a zwitterionic surfactant solution containing 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 wt.% of CNTs. In situ TiC formation via reaction of CNTs with titanium occurred during sintering, and TiC particles were uniformly dispersed in the matrix. As-extruded Ti/TiCs composite rods were annealed at 473 K for 3.6 ks to reduce the residual stress during processing. After annealing process, the tensile properties of the composites were evaluated at room temperature, 473, 573 and 673 K, respectively. Hardness test was also performed at room temperature up to 573 K with a step of 50 K. The mechanical properties of extruded Ti/CNTs composites at elevated temperature were remarkably improved by adding a small amount of CNTs, compared to extruded Ti matrix. These were due to the TiC dispersoids originated from CNTs effectively stabilized the microstructure of extruded Ti composites by their pinning effect. Moreover, the coarsening and growth of Ti grain never occurred even though they were annealed at 573, 673 K for 36 ks and 673 K for 360 ks, respectively.  相似文献

In order to obtain homogeneously dispersed carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforcement with well structure in Al powder, a novel and simple approach was developed as a means of overcoming the limits of traditional mixing methods. This process involves the even deposition of Ni catalyst onto the surface of Al powder by impregnation route with a low Ni content (0.5 wt.%) and in situ synthesis of CNTs in Al powder by chemical vapor deposition. The in situ synthesized CNTs with well-crystallized bamboo-like structure in the composite powders can obviate the reaction with Al below 1000 °C. The feasibility of fabricating CNT/Al composites with high mechanical properties using the as-prepared composite powders was proved by our primary test, which indicated that the compressive yield stress and elastic modulus of 1.5 wt.%-CNT/Al composites synthesized by hot extrusion are 2.2 and 3.0 times as large as that of the pure Al matrix.  相似文献

The interest in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as reinforcements for aluminium (Al) has been growing considerably. Efforts have been largely focused on investigating their contribution to the enhancement of the mechanical performance of the composites. The uniform dispersion of CNTs in the Al matrix has been identified as being critical to the pursuit of enhanced properties. Ball milling as a mechanical dispersion technique has proved its potential. In this work, we use ball milling to disperse up to 5 wt.% CNT in an Al matrix. The effect of CNT content on the mechanical properties of the composites was investigated. Cold compaction and hot extrusion were used to consolidate the ball-milled Al–CNT mixtures. Enhancements of up to 50% in tensile strength and 23% in stiffness compared to pure aluminium were observed. Some carbide formation was observed in the composite containing 5 wt.% CNT. In spite of the observed overall reinforcing effect, the large aspect ratio CNTs used in the present study were difficult to disperse at CNT wt.% greater than 2, and thus the expected improvements in mechanical properties with increase in CNT weight content were not fully realized.  相似文献

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon black (CB) filled powder styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) composites were prepared by spray drying of the suspension of CNTs and CB in SBR latex. The powders were sphere like and fine with uniform diameters of 10-15 μm. Experimental results showed that the introduction of CNTs into the matrix was beneficial to improve the security of the vulcanization of the rubber composites, and the dynamic and basic mechanical properties of the CNTs/SBR composites were better than those of CB/SBR and neat SBR composites. Observations on the microstructure of the composites indicated that CNTs were well dispersed in the matrix. Morphology of the fracture confirmed that the bonding between CNTs and rubber matrix was strong and load can be transferred to CNTs efficiently during the mechanical property tests. Moreover, the powder SBR composites containing well-dispersed CNTs could be perfect candidate as additives for other polymers.  相似文献

TiB and La2O3 reinforced titanium matrix composites were in situ prepared by casting and hot working. An effort was made to investigate relationship between β heat treatment temperature, microstructure and mechanical properties. Tensile tests were performed at room temperature, 600, 650 and 700 °C, respectively. Results indicated that composites treated at 10 °C above β transus points obtained fine grain microstructures and superior mechanical properties. When composites were treated at 20 °C above β transus points, the larger α colonies sizes led extremely decreased strength and the effect of reinforcements’ volume fraction on matrix of composites was reduced; dominant failure modes at high temperatures also differed from the fine microstructure.  相似文献

The (AlN, TiN)-Al2O3 composites were fabricated by reaction sintering powder mixtures containing 10-30 wt.% (Al, Ti)-Al2O3 at 1420-1520°C in nitrogen. It was found that the densification and mechanical properties of the sintered composites depended strongly on the Al, Ti contents of the starting powder and hot pressing parameters. Reaction sintering 20 wt.% (Al, Ti)-Al2O3 powder in nitrogen in 1520°C for 30 min yields (AlN, TiN)-Al2O3 composites with the best mechanical properties, with a hardness HRA of 94.1, bending strength of 687 MPa, and fracture toughness of 6.5 MPa m1/2. Microstructure analysis indicated that TiN is present as well dispersed particulates within a matrix of Al2O3. The AlN identified by XRD was not directly observed, but probably resides at the Al2O3 grain boundary. The fracture mode of these composites was observed to be transgranular.  相似文献

Study was made of the effect of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and polymeric compatibilizer on thermal, mechanical, and tribological properties of high density polyethylene (HDPE). The composites were prepared by melt mixing in two steps. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were melt mixed with maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (PEgMA) as polymeric compatibilizer to produce a PEgMA-CNT masterbatch containing 20 wt% of CNTs. The masterbatch was then added to HDPE to prepare HDPE nanocomposites with CNT content of 2 or 6 wt%. The unmodified and modified (hydroxyl or amine groups) CNTs had similar effects on the properties of HDPE-PEgMA indicating that only non-covalent interactions were achieved between CNTs and matrix. According to SEM studies, single nanotubes and CNT agglomerates (size up to 1 μm) were present in all nanocomposites regardless of content or modification of CNTs. Addition of CNTs to HDPE-PEgMA increased decomposition temperature, but only slight changes were observed in crystallization temperature, crystallinity, melting temperature, and coefficient of linear thermal expansion (CLTE). Young’s modulus and tensile strength of matrix clearly increased, while elongation at break decreased. Measured values of Young’s moduli of HDPE-PEgMA-CNT composites were between the values of Young’s moduli for longitudinal (E11) and transverse (E22) direction predicted by Mori-Tanaka and Halpin-Tsai composite theories. Addition of CNTs to HDPE-PEgMA did not change the tribological properties of the matrix. Because of its higher crystallinity, PEgMA possessed significantly different properties from HDPE matrix: better mechanical properties, lower friction and wear, and lower CLTE in normal direction. Interestingly, the mechanical and tribological properties and CLTEs of HDPE-PEgMA-CNT composites lie between those of PEgMA and HDPE.  相似文献

Carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced composites have been identified as promising structural materials for the mechanical components of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), potentially leading to advanced performance. High alignment and volume fraction of CNTs in the composites are the prerequisites to achieve such desirable mechanical characteristics. In particular, horizontal CNT alignment in composite films is necessary to enable high longitudinal moduli of the composites which is crucial for the performance of microactuators. A practical process has been developed to transfer CNT arrays from vertical to horizontal alignment which is followed by in situ wetting, realign and pressurized consolidation processes, which lead to a high CNT volume fraction in the range of 46-63%. As a result, SU8 epoxy composite films reinforced with horizontally aligned CNTs and a high volume faction of CNTs have been achieved with outstanding mechanical characteristics. The transverse modulus of the composite films has been characterised through nanoindentation and the longitudinal elastic modulus has been investigated. An experimental transverse modulus of 9.6 GPa and an inferred longitudinal modulus in the range of 460-630 GPa have been achieved, which demonstrate effective CNT reinforcement in the SU8 matrix.  相似文献

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were grown from the surface of glass fibers by chemical vapor deposition, and these hybrid fibers were individually dispersed in an epoxy matrix to investigate the local composite structure and properties near the fiber surface. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy revealed the influence of infiltration and curing of a liquid epoxy precursor on the morphology of the CNT “forest” region, or region of high CNT density near the fiber surface. Subsequent image analysis highlighted the importance of spatially dependent volume fractions of CNTs in the matrix as a function of distance from the fiber surface, and nanoindentation was used to probe local mechanical properties in the CNT forest region, showing strong correlations between local stiffness and volume fraction. This work represents the first in situ measurements of local mechanical properties of the nano-structured matrix region in hybrid fiber-reinforced composites, providing a means of quantifying the reinforcement provided by the grafted nanofillers.  相似文献

Magnesium nano-composites containing hybrid aluminium-carbon nanotube (Al-CNT) reinforcement were synthesized through powder metallurgy route using microwave assisted rapid sintering technique followed by hot extrusion. Compared to monolithic Mg, microstructural characterization revealed reasonably uniform distribution of Al-CNT particles in the matrix and reduction in average matrix grain size in the case of hybrid nano-composites. Compared to monolithic Mg, the Mg/Al-CNT nano-composites exhibited higher elastic modulus, strength and failure strain up to 1.00 wt.% Al content. The CNT content was kept constant at 0.18 wt.%. Among the different nano-composite formulations, the Mg/1.00Al-0.18CNT nano-composite exhibited the best improvement in elastic modulus (E), tensile yield strength (0.2%YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and failure strain (up to +3.6%, +38%, +36% and +42%, respectively) compared to pure Mg. The effect of hybrid Al-CNT reinforcement integration on the enhancement of mechanical properties of Mg is investigated in this paper.  相似文献

1.5 vol.% and 4.5 vol.% carbon nanotubes reinforced 2009Al (CNT/2009Al) composites with homogeneously dispersed CNTs and refined matrix grains, were fabricated using powder metallurgy (PM) followed by 4-pass friction stir processing (FSP). Tensile properties of the composites between 293 and 573 K and the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) from 293 to 473 K were tested. It was indicated that load transfer mechanism still takes effect at temperatures elevated up to 573 K, thus the yield strength of the 1.5 vol.% CNT/2009Al composite at 423–573 K, was enhanced compared with the 2009Al matrix. However, for the 4.5 vol.% CNT/2009Al composite, the yield strength at 573 K was even lower than that for the matrix, due to the quicker softening of ultrafine-grained matrix. Compared with the 2009Al matrix, the CTEs of the composites were greatly reduced for the zero thermal expansion and high modulus of the CNTs and could be well predicted by the Schapery’s model.  相似文献

Unidirectional SiC/SiC composites are prepared by nano-powder infiltration and transient eutectic-phase (NITE) process, using pyrolytic carbon (PyC)-coated Tyranno-SA SiC fibers as reinforcement and SiC nano-powder with sintering additives for matrix formation. The effects of two kinds of fiber volume fraction incorporating fabrication temperature were characterized on densification, microstructure and mechanical properties. Densification of the composites with low fiber volume fraction (appropriately 30 vol%) was developed even at lower fabrication temperature of 1800 °C, and then saturated at 3rd stage of matrix densification corresponding to classic liquid phase sintering. Hence, densification of the composites with high volume fraction (above 50 vol%) became restricted because the many fibers retarded the infiltration of SiC nano-powder at lower fabrication temperature of 1800 °C. When fabrication temperature increased by 1900 °C, densification of the composites was effectively enhanced in the intra-fiber-bundles and simultaneously the interaction between PyC interface and matrix was strengthened. SEM observation on the fracture surface revealed that fiber pull-out length was accordingly changed with fabrication temperature as well as fiber volume fraction, which dominated tensile fracture behaviors. Through NITE process, SiC/SiC composites with two fracture types were successfully developed by tailoring of appropriate fabrication temperature to fiber volume fraction as follows: (1) high ductility type and (2) high strength type.  相似文献

High temperature titanium matrix composites (TMCs) with different volume fraction of reinforcements were insitu synthesized by casting and hot forging. An effort was made to investigate the mechanical properties as a function of the microstructure of composites. Tensile tests were performed at room temperature, 600 °C, 650 °C and 700 °C respectively. Creep behavior at 650 °C was characterized in the stress range of 200-300 MPa. Results indicated that the composite with 2.11 vol.% reinforcements had the highest tensile strength and lowest steady state creep rate. Morphology of TiB whiskers was critical to mechanical properties of TMCs. TiB whiskers fracture and debonding acted as the dominant failure modes.  相似文献

By using pure titanium powder coated with un-bundled multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) via wet process, powder metallurgy (P/M) titanium matrix composite (TMC) reinforced with the CNTs was prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) and subsequently hot extrusion process. The microstructure and mechanical properties of P/M pure titanium and reinforced with CNTs were evaluated. The distribution of CNTs and in situ formed titanium carbide (TiC) compounds during sintering was investigated by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with EDS analyzer. The mechanical properties of TMC were significantly improved by the additive of CNTs. For example, when employing the pure titanium composite powder coated with CNTs of 0.35 mass%, the increase of tensile strength and yield stress of the extruded TMC was 157 MPa and 169 MPa, respectively, compared to those of extruded titanium materials with no CNT additive. Fractured surfaces of tensile specimens were analyzed by SEM, and the uniform distribution of CNTs and TiC particles, being effective for the dispersion strengthening, at the surface of the TMC were obviously observed.  相似文献

A prior thermal (pre-curing) treatment of mixtures of epoxy monomer and amino-functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was used to promote a chemical reaction between the matrix and the reinforcement, favouring the formation of a strong interface. Samples of epoxy resin and different weight percentages of amino-functionalized multi-walled CNTs were prepared with and without the pre-curing treatment (150 °C, 1 h). The degree of dispersion of the nanofiller was better when this pre-curing treatment was used. This allowed a higher CNT content while keeping a high sample homogeneity. Without the pre-curing step, the addition of CNTs increases both the flexural strength and strain to failure by 45%. Moreover, with the pre-curing step, the nanocomposite with 0.25 wt.% CNTs presents an increase of flexural strength by 58% and strain to failure by 68% regard to neat epoxy resin.  相似文献

The versatile electrospinning technique was used to successfully align and disperse multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) in nylon 6,6 matrix to obtain composite fibers. The morphology of the composite fibers and the dispersion of the CNTs within the fibers were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. TEM analysis revealed that the CNTs were well-dispersed, separated and aligned along the fiber axis. The thermal and mechanical properties of the composite fibers were characterized as a function of weight fraction of the CNTs. Incorporation of the CNTs in the fibers resulted in an increase in glass-transition temperature (Tg) by ∼7 °C, indicating that the addition of CNTs has restricted the mobility of the polymer chains and provided confinement to neighboring molecular chains. Tensile and nanoindentation experiments were performed to investigate the mechanical deformation behavior of the composite fibers. The results suggested that incorporation of high strength and high aspect ratio CNTs into the fiber matrix enhanced significantly the stiffness and strength of nylon 6,6 fibers. An understanding of the structure–property relationships can provide fruitful insights to develop electrospun fibers with superior properties for miniaturized and load-bearing applications.  相似文献

Composites have set the standard for high strength materials for several decades. With the discovery of nanotubes, new possibilities for reinforced composites have arisen, with potential mechanical properties superior to those of currently available materials. This paper reports the properties of epoxy matrix reinforced with fibres of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) which, in many ways, are similar to standard composites reinforced with commercial fibres. The composites were formed by the back diffusion of the uncured epoxy into an array of aligned fibres of CNTs. The fibre density and volume fraction were measured from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Properties in tension and compression were measured, and the level of fibre–matrix interaction analysed fractographically. The results show the significant potential for this route to CNT reinforcement.  相似文献

The mechanical properties of magnesium matrix composites reinforced by pyrolytic carbon coated short carbon fiber at temperatures close to and above the solidus temperature were investigated by tensile tests for the first time. Microstructural observations and fractographic analysis were carried out in order to reveal the damage mechanisms of the composites with different fraction of liquid. Tensile strength of the composites decreased monotonously with temperature, an exponential equation relating the tensile strength to temperature and liquid fraction was derived. The elongation increases monotonously with temperatures from 400 °C to 428 °C (solidus temperature), and then decreases gradually with increasing fraction of liquid except a trough at 432 °C. The composites almost have no ductility and cannot sustain tensile stress when the fraction of liquid reaches 8%. The amount and distribution of liquid phase in the composites directly determines their mechanical properties and damage behavior.  相似文献

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) filled powder styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) composites were prepared by spray drying of the suspension of CNTs in SBR latex. The powder was spherical like and uniform with an average diameter of less than 10 μm. The dispersion of CNTs in the rubber matrix was improved remarkably compared with that in the rubber composites obtained by the conventional mechanical mixing method. Further study about the effect of CNTs on the prepared SBR composites was performed by analyzing the vulcanization process of the SBR powder, thermal and mechanical properties of the vulcanized SBR composites. Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) analysis indicated that the glass transition temperatures of SBR composites increased with the increasing ratio of CNTs. The vulcanization process showed that CNTs could decelerate the vulcanization of the SBR composites. Dynamic mechanical analysis indicated that the storage modulus of the composites was improved with the CNTs additions, especially when the CNTs addition exceeded 30 phr. Compared with pure SBR composites, the hardness, tensile and tear strengths of the composites filled with 60 phr CNTs enhanced 73.9%, 327.7% and 191.1%, respectively, which should be ascribed to the excellent mechanical properties of CNTs and uniform dispersion of CNTs in the rubber matrix.  相似文献

In this study, the mechanical and thermal properties of epoxy composites using two different forms of carbon nanotubes (powder and masterbatch) were investigated. Composites were prepared by loading the surface-modified CNT powder and/or CNT masterbatch into either ductile or brittle epoxy matrices. The results show that 3 wt.% CNT masterbatch enhances Young’s modulus by 20%, tensile strength by 30%, flexural strength by 15%, and 21.1 °C increment in the glass transition temperature (by 34%) of ductile epoxy matrix. From scanning electron microscopy images, it was observed that the CNT masterbatch was uniformly distributed indicating the pre-dispersed CNTs in the masterbatch allow an easier path for preparation of CNT-epoxy composites with reduced agglomeration of CNTs. These results demonstrate a good CNT dispersion and ductility of epoxy matrix play a key role to achieve high performance CNT-epoxy composites.  相似文献
