Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/epoxy nanocomposites were fabricated by using ultrasonication and the cast molding method. In this process, MWCNTs modified by mixed acids were well dispersed and highly loaded in an epoxy matrix. The effects of MWCNTs addition and surface modification on the mechanical performances and fracture morphologies of composites were investigated. It was found that the tensile strength improved with the increase of MWCNTs addition, and when the content of MWCNTs loading reached 8 wt.%, the tensile strength reached the highest value of 69.7 MPa. In addition, the fracture strain also enhanced distinctly, implying that MWCNTs loading not only elevated the tensile strength of the epoxy matrix, but also increased the fracture toughness. Nevertheless, the elastic modulus reduced with the increase of MWCNTs loading. The reasons for the mechanical property changes are discussed. 相似文献

A modified method for interconnecting multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was put forward. And interconnected MWCNTs by reaction of acyl chloride and amino groups were obtained. Scanning electron microscopy shows that hetero-junctions of MWCNTs with different morphologies were formed. Then specimens of pristine MWCNTs, chemically functionalized MWCNTs and interconnected MWCNTs reinforced epoxy resin composites were fabricated by cast moulding. Tensile properties and fracture surfaces of the specimens were investigated. The results show that, compared with pristine MWCNTs and chemically functionalized MWCNTs, the chemically interconnected MWCNTs improved the fracture strain and therefore the toughness of the composites significantly. 相似文献

A nanocomposite with soluble high-performance poly(phthalazinone ether sulfone ketone) (PPESK) as matrix and multi-walled carbon nanotube buckypaper (MWCNT-BP) as reinforcement was fabricated by hot-press processing. The morphologies, dynamic and static mechanical behavior, thermal stability of the MWCNT-BP/PPESK composites were studied using scanning electron microscope (SEM), dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). SEM microphotographs revealed a high impregnation degree of the MWCNT-BP/PPESK composites. Dynamic and static mechanical analysis revealed that the nanocomposites possessed high storage modulus, and good retention rate of mechanical strength even at 250 °C, which is mainly attributed to satisfied impregnation and strong interactions between MWCNT-BP and PPESK. Thermogravimetric analysis exhibited that the nanocomposites had excellent thermal stability. These investigations confirm that MWCNT-BP can be effectively used to manufacture high-loading CNT/PPESK composites with improved properties. 相似文献

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were chemically functionalized to prepare thermoplastic polyurethane (PU) composites with enhanced properties. In order to achieve a high compatibility of functionalized MWCNTs with the PU matrix, polycaprolactone diol (PCL), as one of PU’s monomers, was selectively grafted on the surface of MWCNTs (MWCNT–PCL), while carboxylic acid groups functionalized MWCNTs (MWCNT–COOH) and raw MWCNTs served as control. Both MWCNT–COOH and MWCNT–PCL improved the dispersion of MWCNTs in the PU matrix and interfacial bonding between them at 1 wt% loading fraction. The MWCNT–PCL/PU composite showed the greatest extent of improvement, where the tensile strength and modulus were 51.2% and 33.5% higher than those of pure PU respectively, without sacrificing the elongation at break. The considerable improvement in both mechanical properties and thermal stability of MWCNT–PCL/PU composite should result from the homogeneous dispersion of MWCNT–PCL in the PU matrix and strong interfacial bonding between them. 相似文献

Composites based on epoxy resin and differently aligned multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) sheets have been developed using hot-melt prepreg processing. Aligned MWCNT sheets were produced from MWCNT arrays using the drawing and winding technique. Wavy MWCNTs in the sheets have limited reinforcement efficiency in the composites. Therefore, mechanical stretching of the MWCNT sheets and their prepregs was conducted for this study. Mechanical stretching of the MWCNT sheets and hot stretching of the MWCNT/epoxy prepregs markedly improved the mechanical properties of the composites. The improved mechanical properties of stretched composites derived from the increased MWCNT volume fraction and the reduced MWCNT waviness caused by stretching. With a 3% stretch ratio, the MWCNT/epoxy composites achieved their best mechanical properties in this study. Although hot stretching of the prepregs increased the tensile strength and modulus of the composites considerably, its efficiency was lower than that of stretching the MWCNT sheets. 相似文献

Knowledge of how polyurethanes, PU, complexity affects their derived multiwalled carbon nanotube, MWCNT, composites could shed important clues for preparing future tailored PU/MWCNT elastic, strong and electrically conductive composites. In this regard, hard segment content and nature, along with MWCNT functionalisation, are believed to have great influence on both nanoscale PU/MWCNT self assembling mechanisms and on final composites properties. In this work the effect of PU hard segment content into composites was analysed. According to the results, a preferential interaction of nanotubes with polyurethanes hard segments can be assumed although nanotubes introduction hindered both soft and hard segments crystallisation. In all cases carbon nanotubes percolative network formation seemed to be crucial for obtaining significant reinforcement, being observed at this stage, a reduction of ductility, phenomena which is related to an increase on hard domains interconnections by MWCNT. The hard to soft segment ratio into PU plays a crucial role on determining the stress transfer to MWCNT. In addition, PU hard domains nature has important effect on nanotubes reinforcing character, this fact being related to the different PU intrinsic morphologies as well as different PU-MWCNT interactions. 相似文献

In this paper, the mechanical properties of vapor grown carbon nanofiber (VGCNF)/polymer composites are reviewed. The paper starts with the structural and intrinsic mechanical properties of VGCNFs. Then the major factors (filler dispersion and distribution, filler aspect ratio, adhesion and interface between filler and polymer matrix) affecting the mechanical properties of VGCNF/polymer composites are presented. After that, VGCNF/polymer composite mechanical properties are discussed in terms of nanofibers dispersion and alignment, adhesion between the nanofiber and polymer matrix, and other factors. The influence of processing methods and processing conditions on the properties of VGCNF/polymer composite is also considered. At the end, the possible future challenges for VGCNF and VGCNF/polymer composites are highlighted. 相似文献

The excellent mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) make them the ideal reinforcements for high performance composites. The misalignment and waviness of CNTs within composites are two major issues that limit the reinforcing efficiency. We report an effective method to increase the strength and stiffness of high volume fraction, aligned CNT composites by reducing CNT waviness using a drawing and stretching approach. Stretching the composites after fabrication improved the ultimate strength by 50%, 150%, and 190% corresponding to stretch ratios of 2%, 4% and 7%, respectively. Improvement of the electrical conductivities exhibited a similar trend. These results demonstrate the importance of straightening and aligning CNTs in improving the composite strength and electrical conductivity. 相似文献

Untreated and acid-treated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) were used to fabricate MWNT/epoxy composite samples by sonication technique. The effect of MWNT addition and their surface modification on the mechanical properties were investigated. Modified Halpin–Tasi equation was used to evaluate the Young’s modulus and tensile strength of the MWNT/epoxy composite samples by the incorporation of an orientation as well as an exponential shape factor in the equation. There was a good correlation between the experimentally obtained Young’s modulus and tensile strength values and the modified Halpin–Tsai theory. The fracture surfaces of MWNT/epoxy composite samples were analyzed by scanning electron microscope. 相似文献

The mechanical and electrical properties of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) reinforced poly(phenylene sulphide) (PPS) composites prepared by melt-extrusion have been evaluated. The wrapping of SWCNTs in polyetherimide (PEI) and the addition of inorganic fullerene-like tungsten disulfide (IF-WS2) nanoparticles provided an effective method for dispersing the SWCNTs, leading to enhanced properties of the resulting hybrid composites. Mechanical tests demonstrated significant enhancements in stiffness, strength and toughness by the addition of both nanofillers, and the Young’s modulus of the hybrid composites was fairly well predicted by two-phase modelling. The electrical conductivity of PPS improved dramatically at low SWCNT content (0.1-0.5 wt%). At higher concentrations, the replacement of part of the SWCNTs with IF-WS2 maintained the level of conductivity of the composites. Overall, the hybrids possess superior performance than composites reinforced solely with wrapped or non-wrapped SWCNTs, and their properties can be tailored by modifying the SWCNT/IF-WS2 ratio. 相似文献

Methylene-bis-ortho-chloroanilline (MOCA), an excellent cross-linker widely used to prepare cured polyurethane (PU) elastomers with high performance, was used to modify a multi-walled carbon nanotube. PU/carbon nanotube (CNT) nanocomposites were prepared by incorporation of the MOCA-grafted CNT into PU matrix. Fourier transform infrared spectra have shown that the modified CNTs have been linked with PU matrix. The microstructure of composites was investigated by Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy. The results of Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analysis and Differential Scanning Calorimetry have investigated the grafted CNTs as cross-linker in the cured composites. The studies on the thermal and mechanical properties of the composites have indicated that the storage modulus and tensile strength, as well as glass transition temperature and thermal stability are significantly increased with increasing CNT content. 相似文献

Soy polyol-based polyurethane (PU) nanocomposites (PUNCs) with 1 wt.% hydroxyl-functionalized multi-wall carbon nanotubes (CNT-OH) were prepared via in situ polymerization. CNT-OH increased the glass transition temperature as well as significantly improved the thermal stability and conductivity of the PUNCs. The PUNC Young’s modulus was much lower than that of neat PU. The tensile strength of the PUNCs with large CNT-OH diameters was slightly higher than that of neat PU. Compared with neat PU, the elongation at break of the PUNCs improved by 30%, 39%, and 45% with increased CNT-OH diameters. Scanning and transmission electron microscopic methods revealed CNT-OH relatively homogeneous dispersion in the PU matrix. 相似文献

Fabricating carbon nanotube-based composites requires high degree of dispersion of carbon nanotubes into a polymer matrix. The widely used approaches reported in open literature for such a purpose are usually complicated and high-cost. Herein, we found that Chinese ink could be used to prepare composites composed of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The Chinese ink acted as a solvent and a dispersant. The MWCNT-ink-PVA ternary composite possessed both high flexibility and high electrical conductivity, with an optimized electrical conductivity of 8.17 S cm−1. This simple method is believed to be applicable to other nanosacle carbon materials. 相似文献

The hybrids of multi-walled carbon nanotube and poly(lactic acid) (MWCNT/PLA) were prepared by a melt-blending method. In order to enhance the compatibility between the PLA and MWCNTs, the surface of the MWCNTs was covalently modified by Jeffamine® polyetheramines by functionalizing MWCNTs with carboxylic groups. Different molecular weights and hydrophilicity of the polyethermaines were grafted onto MWCNTs with the assistance of a dehydrating agent. The results showed that low-molecular-weight Jeffamine® polyetheramine modified MWCNTs can effectively improve the thermal properties of PLA composites. On the other hand, high-molecular-weight and poly(oxyethylene)-segmented polyetheramine could render the modified MWCNTs of well dispersion in PLA, and consequently affecting the improvements of mechanical properties and conductivity of composite materials. With the addition of 3.0 wt% MWCNTs, the increment of E′ of the composite at 40 °C was 79%. For conductivity, the surface resistivity decreased from 1.27 × 1012 Ω/sq for neat PLA to 8.30 × 10−3 Ω/sq for the composites. 相似文献

This study aims to investigate experimentally the effects of aspect ratio (length/diameter ratio) and concentration of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on thermal properties of high density polyethylene (HDPE) based composites. The aspect ratios of two types of MWCNT fillers are in the range of 200–400 and 500–3000. Composite samples were prepared by melt mixing up to weight fraction of 19% filler content, followed by a compression molding. Measurements of density, specific heat and thermal diffusivity (by modulated photothermal radiometry, PTR) were performed and effective thermal conductivities ke of nanocomposites were calculated using these values. The results show that the composites containing MWCNTs with higher aspect ratio have higher thermal conductivities than the ones with lower aspect ratio. In terms of conductivity enhancement ke/km − 1, the results indicate that MWCNTs with higher aspect ratio provide three to fourfold larger enhancement than the ones with lower aspect ratio, at low filler concentrations. 相似文献

The in-situ bulk polycondensation process in combination with a ball milling dispersion process was used to prepare the water blown multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNT)/polyurethane (PU) composite foam. The mechanical properties, piezoresistive properties, strain sensitivity, stress and resistance relaxation behaviors of the composite foams were investigated. The results show that the CNT/PU composite foam has a better compression strength than the unfilled polyurethane foams and a negative pressure coefficient behavior under uniaxial compression. The resistance response of CNT/PU nanocomposites foam under cyclic compressive loading was quite stable. The nanocomposite foam containing a weight fraction of carbon nanotubes close to the percolation threshold presents the largest strain sensitivity for the resistance. The characteristic of resistance relaxation of CNT/PU composite foam is different from the stress relaxation due to the different relaxation mechanism. During compressive stress relaxation, the CNT/PU foam composites have excellent resistance recoverability while poor stress recoverability. 相似文献

A simple synthetic method for placing a mesoporous silica coating on multi-wall carbon nanotubes (CNTs@MS) was developed to improve the surface compatibility with regard to a polar epoxy matrix. In addition, the mesoporous silica shell with silanol groups on the CNTs provides a platform to attach silane molecules (e.g. 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane, GPTMS) that enable the CNTs@MS to be incorporated into the epoxy matrix at a content of up to 20 wt.%. The viscosities of the CNTs@MS- and GPTMS-modified-CNTs@MS–epoxy composites are much lower than that of the CNTs–epoxy, and then the voids in the GPTMS-modified-CNTs@MS–epoxy composites are most significantly reduced. The effects of the CNTs@MS and GPTMS-modified CNTs@MS on the mechanical and thermal properties of the epoxy composite are investigated. The results show that the GPTMS-modified CNTs@MS improved the filler–epoxy matrix interaction, and has better compatibility in epoxy than the CNTs@MS. As the surface compatibility and interaction strength increase in the epoxy matrix, the enhancement in storage modulus, thermal conductivity and reduction in the coefficient of thermal expansion are in the following order: GPTMS-modified CNTs@MS > CNTs@MS ≫ CNTs. 相似文献

A series of composites based on polylactide (PLA), have been prepared by melt-blending with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) and Tri(1-hydroxyethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride) phosphate (IP) functionalized MWNT (MIP). The morphology, thermal stability and burning behavior of the composites were investigated by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Cone Calorimeter Test (CCT), respectively. Significant improvement in fire retardant performance was observed for the PLA/MIP composite from CCT (reducing both the heat release rate and the total heat release) and TGA (increasing the char residue) compared to PLA/MWNT. SEM and Raman spectroscopy were utilized to explore the surface morphology and chemical structure of the char residues. It revealed that the catalytic charring effect of IP, the physical crosslinking effect of MWNT, and the combined effect of both IP and MWNT (forming continuous and compact char layers) were very efficient in improving the flame retarding properties of PLA/MIP composite. 相似文献

Mechanical reinforcement of polymer matrices loaded by carbon nanotubes is expected to benefit by both the high aspect ratio and the very high modulus of such nanofillers and, consequently, it depends not only by their content within the hosting system but also by the state of dispersion. This work analyses the effect on the bending modulus of dispersed multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) into an epoxy system. Results indicate that reinforcement efficiency is characterised by two limiting behaviours whose transition region coincides with the development of a percolative network of nanotubes. Well below the percolation threshold, the carbon nanotubes, contribute to the composite modulus with their exceptional modulus (in this case a value of 1.780 TPa was found), whereas it dramatically decreases above this limit due to the reduction of the effective aspect ratio and the micron sized cluster formation. An estimate of the maximum reinforcement induced by carbon nanotubes has been proposed based on percolation and stress transfer theory for large aspect ratio fillers. 相似文献
