Liquid infiltration is an efficient way to densify carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and was used to strengthen CNT fibres in the method of array spinning. Rather than the volatility, the dipole moment of solvent plays a more important role in determining the densification level. The fibres densified by highly polar but non-volatile solvents such as N,N-dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulphoxide, and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone were 100–200 MPa stronger than those by ethanol and acetone. Ethylene glycol is the most efficient solvent due to its two polar OH groups and improved the fibre strength to 1.45 GPa. Long chain or cross-linked polymers like polyvinyl alcohol, polyimide, and bismaleimide (BMI) were introduced into CNT fibres by infiltration with aid of polar solvents. These polymers reinforced the fibres significantly, as they can connect non-neighboring CNTs and benefit the load transfer. The strongest CNT/BMI fibre was 2.38 GPa in strength and 110 GPa in modulus.  相似文献

The tensile, flexural and impact properties of randomly oriented short Sansevieria cylindrica fibre/polyester (SCFP) composites are described for the first time in this work. Composites were fabricated using raw S. cylindrica fibres (SCFs) with varying fibre lengths and weight percents of fibre. When the length of the SCFs was increased, the tensile, flexural and impact properties of the composite were increased up to a 30-mm fibre length, and then a curtailment in properties occurred for higher fibre length composites. SCFP composites showed a regular trend of an increase in properties with fibre weight percent until 40% and afterwards a decrease in properties for composites with greater fibre weight percent. Tensile tests revealed that the tensile strength was about 76 MPa, the Young’s modulus was 1.1 GPa and the elongation at break was between 7% and 8.3%. The flexural strength and modulus were estimated to be around 84 MPa and 3 GPa, respectively. Impact tests exhibited a strength of approximately 9.5 J/cm2. The analysis of the tensile, flexural and impact properties of short SCFP composites displayed a critical fibre length and optimum fibre weight percent of 30 mm and 40%, respectively. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) studies were carried out to evaluate the fibre/matrix interactions. The experimental tensile strengths were compared with the theoretical predictions and found to be in good agreement with Hirsch’s model. An X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of the composites exposed the presence of cellulose IV with a crystallinity index of 60% and crystallite size of 68 nm.  相似文献

The unidirectional boron nitride fibre reinforced boron nitride matrix (BNf/BN) composites were prepared via the precursor infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP) route, and the structure, composition, mechanical and dielectric properties were studied. The composites have a high content and fine crystallinity of BN. The density is 1.60 g cm−3 with a low open porosity of 4.66%. The composites display good mechanical properties with the average flexural strength, elastic modulus and fracture toughness being 53.8 MPa, 20.8 GPa and 6.88 MPa m1/2, respectively. Lots of long fibres pull-out from the fracture surface, suggesting a good fibre/matrix interface. As temperature increases, both of the flexural strength and elastic modulus exhibit a decreasing trend, with the lowest values being 36.2 MPa and 8.6 GPa at 1000 °C, respectively. The desirable residual ratios of the flexural strength and elastic modulus at 1000 °C are 67.3% and 41.3%, respectively. The composites have excellent dielectric properties, with the average dielectric constant and loss tangent being 3.07 and 0.0044 at 2-18 GHz, respectively.  相似文献

This study presents results from a study of the mechanical behaviour of flax reinforced Poly(l-Lactic Acid) (PLLA) under in-plane shear and mode I interlaminar fracture testing. Slow cooling of the unreinforced polymer has been shown to develop crystalline structure, causing improvement in matrix strength and modulus but a drop in toughness. The in-plane shear properties of the composite also drop for the slowest cooling rate, the best combination of in-plane shear performance and delamination resistance is noted for an intermediate cooling rate, (15.5 °C/min). The values of GIc obtained at this cooling rate are higher than those for equivalent glass/polyester composites. These macro-scale results have been correlated with microdroplet interface debonding and matrix characterization measurements from a previous study. The composite performance is dominated by the matrix rather than the interface.  相似文献

Ceramic matrix composites (CMC) have been considered in the last two decades to be alternative materials for highly demanding thermo-structural applications. Pre-ceramic polymers offer significant advantages for manufacturing these composites by the polymer impregnation method. In the present work, carbon fiber/silicon oxycarbide (C/SiC x O y ) composites were obtained by controlled pyrolysis of carbon fiber/bridge polysilsesquioxane composites (COMPOSITE 1) followed by infiltration/pyrolysis cycles with a polycyclic silicone network. The polysilsesquioxane showed high wettability and adhesion on the carbon fiber surface. An improvement of the thermo-oxidation resistance and a reduction of the porosity as a function of the number of polycyclic silicone infiltration cycles were observed. An extra improvement in the thermo-oxidation protection was found when the C/SiC x O y composite was coated with a poly(phenylsilsesquioxane) layer (COMPOSITE 2). Shear properties for the composites showed a dependence on the nature of the matrix. The average in-plane shear strength and the shear modulus were 44.2 ± 1.9 MPa and 2.2 ± 0.5 GPa for the polymeric matrix composite (COMPOSITE 1), respectively. For the ceramic matrix composite (COMPOSITE 2) the values were 14.2 ± 4.1 MPa and 15.0 ± 2.0 GPa, respectively. The properties of the latter composite were also governed by the microstructure of the ceramic matrix.  相似文献

Silk reinforced gelatin based composites were prepared by compression molding. The fiber content in the composite was 20 wt.%. Tensile strength (TS), tensile modulus (TM), bending strength (BS), bending modulus (BM), impact strength (IS) and hardness of the composites were found 44.5 MPa, 0.65 GPa, 63 MPa, 3.7 GPa, 5.1 kJ/m2 and 96 shore A respectively. The environmental effect on composite was observed by simulating weathering test and the composite lost 15.2% TS at the end of 30 h of the weathering testing period. The biodegradation test shows that the composite degrades very quickly and losses 52.1% weight at the end of 24 h. Morphological analysis was carried out to observe fracture behaviour and fiber pullout of the samples.  相似文献

For the first time, the recently synthesized pyrochlore MgZrSi2O7 [J. Xu et al., Mater. Chem. Phys. 128 (2011) 410] has been analyzed using the first principles calculations. The electronic and elastic properties were predicted; in particular, the band gap is indirect and has the value of 6.75 eV. The bulk modulus equals to 186.51 ± 1.95 GPa. Anisotropy of elastic properties was analyzed by comparing the upper and lower estimates of the shear moduli. In addition, directional dependence of the Young's modulus was calculated and visualized; its value varies in the range from 249.7 GPa (along the a, b, c crystallographic axes) to 136.84 GPa (along the bisector direction in any of the ab, bc, ac planes).  相似文献

The aim of this study was to develop cellulose nanofiber (CNF) reinforced polylactic acid (PLA) by twin screw extrusion. Nanocomposites were prepared by premixing a master batch with high concentration of CNFs in PLA and diluting to final concentrations (1, 3, 5 wt.%) during the extrusion. Morphology, mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties (DMA) were studied theoretically and experimentally to see how different CNF concentrations affected the composites’ properties. The tensile modulus and strength increased from 2.9 GPa to 3.6 GPa and from 58 MPa to 71 MPa, respectively, for nanocomposites with 5 wt.% CNF. The DMA results were also positive; the storage modulus increased for all nanocomposites compared to PLA; being more significant in the high temperature region (70 °C). The addition of nanofibers shifted the tan delta peak towards higher temperatures. The tan delta peak of the PLA shifted from 70 °C to 76 °C for composites with 5 wt.% CNF.  相似文献

Three-dimensional (3D) silicon carbide (SiC) matrix composites reinforced with KD-I SiC fibres were fabricated by precursor impregnation and pyrolysis (PIP) process. The fibre-matrix interfaces were tailored by pre-coating the as-received KD-I SiC fibres with PyC layers of different thicknesses or a layer of SiC. Interfacial characteristics and their effects on the composite mechanical properties were evaluated. The results indicate that the composite reinforced with as-received fibre possessed an interfacial shear strength of 72.1 MPa while the composite reinforced with SiC layer coated fibres had a much higher interfacial shear strength of 135.2 MPa. However, both composites showed inferior flexural strength and fracture toughness. With optimised PyC coating thickness, the interface coating led to much improved mechanical properties, i.e. a flexural strength of 420.6 MPa was achieved when the interlayer thickness is 0.1 μm, and a fracture toughness of 23.1 MPa m1/2 was obtained for the interlayer thickness of 0.53 μm. In addition, the composites prepared by the PIP process exhibited superior mechanical properties over the composites prepared by the chemical vapour infiltration and vapour silicon infiltration (CVI-VSI) process.  相似文献

This study examined the mechanical properties of aligned multi-walled carbon nanotube (CNT)/epoxy composites processed using a hot-melt prepreg method. Vertically aligned ultra-long CNT arrays (forest) were synthesized using chemical vapor deposition, and were converted to horizontally aligned CNT sheets by pulling them out. An aligned CNT/epoxy prepreg was fabricated using hot-melting with B-stage cured epoxy resin film. The resin content in prepreg was well controlled. The prepreg sheets showed good drapability and tackiness. Composite film specimens of 24-33 μm thickness were produced, and tensile tests were conducted to evaluate the mechanical properties. The resultant composites exhibit higher Young’s modulus and tensile strength than those of composites produced using conventional CNT/epoxy mixing methods. For example, the maximum elastic modulus and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of a CNT (21.4 vol.%)/epoxy composite were 50.6 GPa and 183 MPa. These values were, respectively, 19 and 2.9 times those of the epoxy resin.  相似文献

A novel, entirely bio-derived polylactide carbohydrate copolymer (RP1) is used as a compatibilizer, to produce bacterial cellulose (BC) poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) nanocomposites with improved mechanical properties. Contact angle measurements of RP1 droplets on single BC nanofibres proved that it has a higher affinity towards BC than PLLA. RP1 has a comparable Young’s modulus, but lower tensile strength, than PLLA. When RP1 was blended with PLLA at a concentration of 5 wt%, the tensile modulus and strength of the resulting polymer blend decreased from 4.08 GPa and 63.1, respectively, for PLLA to 3.75 GPa and 56.1 MPa. A composite of BC and PLLA (with 5 wt% RP1 and 5 wt% BC) has a higher Young’s modulus and tensile strength, compared to either pure PLLA or PLLA–BC nanocomposites.  相似文献

In this paper, electrical and mechanical properties of Poly (p-phenylene sulfide) (PPS)/multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) nanocomposites were reported. The composites were obtained just by simply melt mixing PPS with raw MWNTs without any pre-treatment. The dispersion of MWNTs and interfacial interaction were investigated through SEM &TEM and Raman spectra. The rheological test and crystallization behavior were also investigated to study the effects of MWNTs concentration on the structure and chain mobility of the prepared composites. Though raw MWNTs without any pre-treatment were used, a good dispersion and interaction between PPS and MWNTs have been evidenced, resulting in a great improvement of electrical properties and mechanical properties of the composites. Raman spectra showed a remarkable decrease of G band intensity and a shift of D bond, demonstrating a strong filler–matrix interaction, which was considered as due to π–π stacking between PPS and MWNTs. The storage modulus (G′) versus frequency curve presented a plateau above the percolation threshold of about 2–3 wt% with the formation of an interconnected nanotube structure, indicative of ‘pseudo-solid-like’ behavior. Meanwhile, a conductive percolation threshold of 5 wt% was achieved and the conductivity of nanocomposites increased sharply by several orders of magnitude. The difference between electrical and rheological percolation threshold, and the effect of critical percolation on the chain mobility, especially on crystallization behavior of PPS, were discussed. In summary, our work provides a simple and fast way to prepare PPS/MWNTs nanocomposites with good dispersion and improved properties.  相似文献

Three-phase glass fiber reinforced composites (GFRP) consisting of traditional woven glass fiber and polyamide-6 (PA6) matrix dispersed with organically modified layered silicates were prepared and investigated in this study. The fabrication of GFRP with different weight percentages of layered silicates was successful when the matrix contains less than 5 wt% of the layered silicates. The improvement due to the high aspect ratio and high stiffness of the layered silicates is illustrated through the matrix-controlled properties of the GFRP. The results showed that the GFRP with 5 wt% layered silicates offer the largest improvement of approximately 30% increase in both flexural strength and compressive strength at elevated temperatures. On the other hand, the in-plane shear properties measured from [±45]s laminates revealed that the layered silicates help improved both the in-plane shear strength and modulus appropriately. By utilizing a nanocomposite matrix, improvement of stiffness and strength, as well as thermal and barrier properties is obtained without any change in processing temperature of the fiber composites.  相似文献

Fine MoSi2 powders containing a small amount of Mo5Si3 have been prepared by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS), followed by spark plasma sintering (SPS) for 10 min at 1200-1500°C and 30 MPa. Dense MoSi2 materials, in which the grain size is ∼7.5 μm, have been fabricated at 1300°C. They exhibit excellent mechanical properties: Vicker’s hardness Hv (10.6 GPa), fracture toughness KIC (4.5 MPa m1/2), and bending strength σb (560 MPa). The strength of 325 MPa can be retained up to 1000°C.  相似文献

Unidirectional hemp yarn-reinforced green composites were fabricated with soy protein concentrate (SPC) resin processed at various pH values. To preserve the yarn alignment during the fabrication of green composites, hemp yarn was wound onto a metal frame with slight tension and precured SPC resin was applied to the yarns. Effects of pH values on the tensile properties of the SPC resin and hemp yarn/SPC resin interfacial shear strength (IFSS) were investigated. Increasing pH of the SPC resin from 7 to 12 decreased its fracture stress and Young’s modulus from 13.1 MPa and 357.5 MPa to 8.1 MPa and 156.2 MPa, respectively. At the same time fracture strain and moisture content increased from 31.5% and 15.65% to 53·4% and 19.30%, respectively, indicating resin plasticization. However, hemp yarn/SPC resin IFSS increased from 17.7 MPa at pH 7 up to 28.0 MPa at pH 10, after which it decreased. The fracture toughness of the composites increased up to pH of 10 but further increase in pH reduced the toughness. SEM photomicrographs showed fracture surfaces of hemp yarn-reinforced green composites that indicated better resin/fiber interaction at pH of 10 than 7 or 12.  相似文献

The mechanical and electrical properties of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) reinforced poly(phenylene sulphide) (PPS) composites prepared by melt-extrusion have been evaluated. The wrapping of SWCNTs in polyetherimide (PEI) and the addition of inorganic fullerene-like tungsten disulfide (IF-WS2) nanoparticles provided an effective method for dispersing the SWCNTs, leading to enhanced properties of the resulting hybrid composites. Mechanical tests demonstrated significant enhancements in stiffness, strength and toughness by the addition of both nanofillers, and the Young’s modulus of the hybrid composites was fairly well predicted by two-phase modelling. The electrical conductivity of PPS improved dramatically at low SWCNT content (0.1-0.5 wt%). At higher concentrations, the replacement of part of the SWCNTs with IF-WS2 maintained the level of conductivity of the composites. Overall, the hybrids possess superior performance than composites reinforced solely with wrapped or non-wrapped SWCNTs, and their properties can be tailored by modifying the SWCNT/IF-WS2 ratio.  相似文献

Resin-matrix composites, reinforced with high aspect ratio 2826MB amorphous metal ribbon in a simple stacking pattern, were fabricated and evaluated. Typical composite properties at 60 vol% ribbon are a density of 5.27 g cm–3, a longitudinal tensile strength of 1740 MPa, a transverse tensile strength of 870 MPa, a near-isotropic in-plane modulus of 100 GPa and a fracture toughness similar to that of 6061-T6 aluminium alloy. These composites are also shown to have poor mechanical fatigue resistance. In comparison with other engineering materials, these composites are superior on a specific strength basis. However, they are not competitive with quasi-isotropic AS graphite-epoxy on a specific modulus basis. Because of this deficiency, it is concluded that amorphous metal ribbon reinforced composites would not be in a competitive position for most high performance composite applications. However, the high biaxial composite strength properties, potential low cost, and the unusual soft magnetic properties offered by the ribbons may result in some unique composite applications.  相似文献

The main objective of this study is to introduce a new natural fiber as reinforcement in polymers for making composites. Wildcane grass stalk fibers were extracted from its stem using retting and chemical (NaOH) extraction processes. These fibers were treated with KMnO4 solution to improve adhesion with matrix. The resulting fibers were intentionally reinforced in a polyester matrix unidirectionally, and the flexural properties of the composite were determined. The fibers extracted by retting process have a tensile strength of 159 MPa, modulus of 11.84 GPa, and an effective density of 0.844 g/cm3. The composites were formulated up to a maximum fiber volume fraction of 0.39, resulting in a flexural strength of 99.17 MPa and flexural modulus of 3.96 GPa for wildcane grass fibers extracted by retting. The flexural strength and the modulus of chemically extracted wildcane grass fiber composites have increased by approximately, 7 and 17%, respectively compared to those of composites made from fibers extracted by retting process. The flexural strength and the modulus of KMnO4-treated fiber composites have increased by 12 and 76% over those of composites made from fibers extracted by retting process and decreased by 3 and 48% over those of composites made from fibers extracted by chemical process, respectively. The results of this study indicate that wildcane grass fibers have potential as reinforcing fillers in plastics in order to produce inexpensive materials with high toughness.  相似文献

The high-performance carbon fiber reinforced poly(phenylene sulfide) composites were continuously fabricated using thermoplastic prepregs in a double-belt press. The effects of process velocity on the composite consolidation quality and mechanical properties were investigated. It is found that the tensile and interlaminar shear properties of composites prepared using the double-belt press are comparable to that of compression-molded composites when the process velocity is no more than 0.20 m·min−1. The composite fracture morphologies also show different failure mechanisms between different samples and indicate that the interfacial adhesion strength may play a vital role in the mechanical properties of CF/PPS composites. Furthermore, experimental results show that the heating time above 330 °C should be over 440 s and the void content should be lower than 2.38% in order to obtain high performance CF/PPS composites.  相似文献

Starch-based biocomposites reinforced with jute (micro-sized fiber) and bacterial cellulose (BC) (nano-sized fiber) were prepared by film casting. Reinforcement in the composites is essentially influenced by fiber nature, and amount of loading. The optimum amount of fiber loading for jute and bacterial cellulose in each composite system are 60 wt% and 50 wt% (of starch weight), respectively. Mechanical properties are largely improved due to the strong hydrogen interaction between the starch matrix and cellulose fiber together with good fiber dispersion and impregnation in these composites revealed by SEM. The composites reinforced with 40 wt% or higher bacterial cellulose contents have markedly superior mechanical properties than those reinforced with jute. Young’s modulus and tensile strength of the optimum 50 wt% bacterial cellulose reinforced composite averaged 2.6 GPa and 58 MPa, respectively. These values are 106-fold and 20-fold more than the pure starch/glycerol film. DMTA revealed that the presence of bacterial cellulose (with optimum loading) significantly enhanced the storage modulus and glass transition temperature of the composite, with a 35 °C increment. Thermal degradation of the bacterial cellulose component occurred at higher temperatures implying improved thermal stability. The composites reinforced with bacterial cellulose also had much better water resistance than those associated with jute. In addition, even at high fiber loading, the composites reinforced by bacterial cellulose clearly retain an exceptional level of optical transparency owing to the effect of the nano-sized fibers and also good interfacial bonding between the matrix and bacterial cellulose.  相似文献
