The friction and wear behavior of carbon nanotube reinforced polyamide 6 (PA6/CNT) composites under dry sliding and water lubricated condition was comparatively investigated using a pin-on-disc wear tester at different normal loads. The morphologies of the worn surfaces and counterfaces of the composites were also observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that CNTs could improve the wear resistance and reduce the friction coefficient of PA6 considerably under both sliding conditions, due to the effective reinforcing and self-lubricating effects of CNTs on the PA6 matrix. The composites exhibited lower friction coefficient and higher wear rate under water lubricated condition than under dry sliding. Although the cooling and boundary lubrication effect of the water contributed to reduce the friction coefficient of the composites, the adsorbed water lowered the strength of the composites and also inhibited the formation of transfer layers on the counterfaces resulting in less wear resistance. With the increasing normal loads, the friction coefficient of the composites increased under the dry sliding and decreased under the water lubricated condition, owing to inconsistent influences of shear strength and real contact areas. The specific wear rate of the composites increased under both sliding conditions.  相似文献

An epoxy-based nanocomposite containing graphite powder (7 vol%) and nano-scale TiO2 (4 vol%) was developed for tribological evaluation. A series of composites containing additional fillers such as short carbon fibers (SCF), Aramid and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) particles was developed and evaluated in adhesive and low amplitude oscillating wear modes. The incorporation of SCF and Aramid particles resulted in a remarkable improvement in the sliding wear resistance. However, SCF impaired the low amplitude oscillating wear resistance. The further addition of PTFE to the SCF filled nanocomposites reduced the friction and wear under both wear conditions. However, an adverse effect of PTFE was found for the Aramid particles filled nanocomposites. Under sliding conditions, the lowest wear rate and coefficient of friction showed the 2–4 vol% PTFE filled SCF nanocomposite. Aramid particles containing nanocomposites (without PTFE) exhibited the best wear and friction behavior under low amplitude oscillating wear conditions among the selected composites. The wear mechanisms were studied by scanning electron microscopy.  相似文献

Multiphase composite materials filled with multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), short nickel-coated carbon fibers and millimeter-long carbon fibers with various weight fractions and compositions are developed and used for the design of wide-band thin radar-absorbing screens. The effective complex permittivity of several composite samples is measured in the frequency range from 8 GHz to 18 GHz. The obtained results show that the addition of the MWCNTs into the mixture allows tuning the EM properties of the composite filled with the short nickel-coated fibers. Numerical simulations are also performed in order to design new radar-absorbing shields. Single-layer and bi-layer thin dielectric Salisbury screens are designed to exhibit minimum reflection coefficient at 10 GHz and at 15 GHz, and maximum bandwidth at −10 dB. It results that the total thickness of the screen can be reduced below 2 mm by using a lossy sheet made with the composite filled with MWCNTs and nickel-coated carbon fibers, whereas the bandwidth at −10 dB can exceed 6 GHz in a bi-layer structure.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to evaluate effects of stacking thickness on the microscopic damage behavior in a filament wound carbon fiber reinforced plastics (FW-CFRPs) composite cylinder subjected to impact or quasi-static out-of-plane loading. From both tests, thicker CFRP improved the stiffness of the cylinder and decreased the resultant plastic deformation due to indentation. From the cross-sectional observation, it is clarified that fiber breakages were localized for the specimens with impact tests more than 10-layers and specimens with quasi-static tests more than 15-layers. In order to discuss the relation between the damage and the absorbed energy, damage depth ratio was defined as fiber damage depth per unit CFRP thickness. To normalize the effect of thickness, absorbed energy ratio was also defined as absorbed energy per unit CFRP thickness. Absorbed energy ratio as a function of absorbed energy ratio was expressed as one master curve regardless of loading conditions.  相似文献

Three-dimensional (3D) needled carbon/carbon (C/C) composites with a lowest porosity of 15.6% were achieved after 1 cycle of impregnation by phenolic resin slurry containing graphite filler, hot-pressing curing and pyrolysis. Carbon/silicon carbide (C/SiC) composites were obtained by liquid silicon infiltrating C/C composites. The aim was to incorporate cost effectiveness and excellent performance of C/SiC braking material. Using filler content not exceeding 30 wt% in the slurry promised undamaged C/C segments in C/SiC composites. The linear wear rate of C/SiC using 30 wt% filler was 0.33 μm side−1 cycle−1 and displayed a fourfold decrease; its weight wear rate was 2.46 mg side−1 cycle−1 and minus 171%, compared with the previously reported values of C/SiC without filler, at a braking velocity of 28 m/s. Its friction coefficients and friction stability coefficients appeared relative insensitive to changes in braking velocities and displayed higher values at high braking velocities compared with the previous values.  相似文献

Susceptibility to matrix driven failure is one of the major weaknesses of continuous-fiber composites. In this study, helical-ribbon carbon nanofibers (CNF) were dispersed in the matrix phase of a continuous carbon fiber-reinforced composite. Along with an unreinforced control, the resulting hierarchical composites were tested to failure in several modes of quasi-static testing designed to assess matrix-dominated mechanical properties and fracture characteristics. Results indicated CNF addition offered simultaneous increases in tensile stiffness, strength and toughness while also enhancing both compressive and flexural strengths. Short-beam strength testing resulted in no apparent improvement while the fracture energy required for the onset of mode I interlaminar delamination was enhanced by 35%. Extrinsic toughening mechanisms, e.g., intralaminar fiber bridging and trans-ply cracking, significantly affected steady-state crack propagation values. Scanning electron microscopy of delaminated fracture surfaces revealed improved primary fiber–matrix adhesion and indications of CNF-induced matrix toughening.  相似文献

Three-dimensional reinforcement of woven advanced polymer–matrix composites using aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is explored experimentally and theoretically. Radially-aligned CNTs grown in situ on the surface of fibers in a woven cloth provide significant three-dimensional reinforcement, as measured by Mode I interlaminar fracture testing and tension-bearing experiments. Aligned CNTs bridge the ply interfaces giving enhancement in both initiation and steady-state toughness, improving the already tough system by 76% in steady state (more than 1.5 kJ/m2 increase). CNT pull-out on the crack faces is the observed toughening mechanism, and an analytical model is correlated to the experimental fracture data. In the plane of the laminate, aligned CNTs enhance the tension-bearing response with increases of: 19% in bearing stiffness, 9% in critical strength, and 5% in ultimate strength accompanied by a clear change in failure mode from shear-out failure (matrix dominated) without CNTs to tensile fracture (fiber dominated) with CNTs.  相似文献

The scope of this study on arched composite laminates subjected to low-velocity impact was two-fold. One was to investigate the effect of camber height on energy absorption and the other the effect of boundary condition on energy absorption. All specimens were made of the same prepreg tape material and a cross-ply stacking sequence of [0/90]3s such that a comparison among flat panels and arched specimens with various camber heights can be made. Analysis on the load–deflection relation, the energy profile and the damage process were of primary interest as they provided the insight into the impact behavior of arched composites. Experimental results showed that the maximum deflection and the energy absorption increased significantly as the camber height increased while the peak load decreased slightly. It was also found that the boundary condition played an important role in the energy absorption process. Frame-clamped specimens experienced higher slippage, and hence higher energy absorption, than bolted specimens. This slippage was observed after impact because the specimen actually would pull out of the frame. Video footage also verified this phenomenon.  相似文献

Carbon fibres are particularly well suited for use in a multifunctional lightweight design of a structural composite material able to store energy as a lithium-ion battery. The fibres will in this case act as both a high performance structural reinforcement and one of the battery electrodes. However, the electrochemical cycling consists of insertions and extractions of lithium ions in the microstructure of carbon fibres and its impact on the mechanical performance is unknown. This study investigates the changes in the tensile properties of carbon fibres after they have been subjected to a number of electrochemical cycles. Consistent carbon fibre specimens were manufactured with polyacrylonitrile-based carbon fibres. Sized T800H and desized IMS65 were selected for their mechanical properties and electrochemical capacities. At the first lithiation the ultimate tensile strength of the fibres was reduced of about 20% but after the first delithiation some strength was recovered. The losses and recoveries of strength remained unchanged with the number of cycles as long as the cell capacity remained reversible. Losses in the cell capacity after 1000 cycles were measured together with smaller losses in the tensile strength of the lithiated fibres. These results show that electrochemical cycling does not degrade the tensile properties which seem to depend on the amount of lithium ions inserted and extracted. Both fibre grades exhibited the same trends of results. The tensile stiffness was not affected by the cycling. Field emission scanning electron microscope images taken after electrochemical cycling did not show any obvious damage of the outer surface of the fibres.  相似文献

The versatile electrospinning technique was used to successfully align and disperse multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) in nylon 6,6 matrix to obtain composite fibers. The morphology of the composite fibers and the dispersion of the CNTs within the fibers were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. TEM analysis revealed that the CNTs were well-dispersed, separated and aligned along the fiber axis. The thermal and mechanical properties of the composite fibers were characterized as a function of weight fraction of the CNTs. Incorporation of the CNTs in the fibers resulted in an increase in glass-transition temperature (Tg) by ∼7 °C, indicating that the addition of CNTs has restricted the mobility of the polymer chains and provided confinement to neighboring molecular chains. Tensile and nanoindentation experiments were performed to investigate the mechanical deformation behavior of the composite fibers. The results suggested that incorporation of high strength and high aspect ratio CNTs into the fiber matrix enhanced significantly the stiffness and strength of nylon 6,6 fibers. An understanding of the structure–property relationships can provide fruitful insights to develop electrospun fibers with superior properties for miniaturized and load-bearing applications.  相似文献

Study was made of the effect of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and polymeric compatibilizer on thermal, mechanical, and tribological properties of high density polyethylene (HDPE). The composites were prepared by melt mixing in two steps. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were melt mixed with maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (PEgMA) as polymeric compatibilizer to produce a PEgMA-CNT masterbatch containing 20 wt% of CNTs. The masterbatch was then added to HDPE to prepare HDPE nanocomposites with CNT content of 2 or 6 wt%. The unmodified and modified (hydroxyl or amine groups) CNTs had similar effects on the properties of HDPE-PEgMA indicating that only non-covalent interactions were achieved between CNTs and matrix. According to SEM studies, single nanotubes and CNT agglomerates (size up to 1 μm) were present in all nanocomposites regardless of content or modification of CNTs. Addition of CNTs to HDPE-PEgMA increased decomposition temperature, but only slight changes were observed in crystallization temperature, crystallinity, melting temperature, and coefficient of linear thermal expansion (CLTE). Young’s modulus and tensile strength of matrix clearly increased, while elongation at break decreased. Measured values of Young’s moduli of HDPE-PEgMA-CNT composites were between the values of Young’s moduli for longitudinal (E11) and transverse (E22) direction predicted by Mori-Tanaka and Halpin-Tsai composite theories. Addition of CNTs to HDPE-PEgMA did not change the tribological properties of the matrix. Because of its higher crystallinity, PEgMA possessed significantly different properties from HDPE matrix: better mechanical properties, lower friction and wear, and lower CLTE in normal direction. Interestingly, the mechanical and tribological properties and CLTEs of HDPE-PEgMA-CNT composites lie between those of PEgMA and HDPE.  相似文献

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) composites reinforced with carbon fibers (CFs) and nano-ZrO2 particles were prepared by incorporating nanoparticles into PEEK/CF composites via twin-screw extrusion. The effects of nanoparticles on the mechanical and wear properties of the PEEK/CF composites were studied. The results showed that the incorporation of nano-ZrO2 particles with carbon fiber could effectively enhance the tensile properties of the composites. The tensile strength and Young’s modulus of the composites increased with the increasing nano-ZrO2 content. The enhancement effect of the particle was more significant in the hybrid reinforced composites. The compounding of the two fillers also remarkably improved the wear resistance of the composites under water condition especially under high pressures. It was revealed that the excellent wear resistance of the PEEK/CF/ZrO2 composites was due to a synergy effect between the nano-ZrO2 particles and CF. CF carried the majority of load during sliding process and prevented severe wear to the matrix. The incorporation of nano-ZrO2 effectively inhibited the CF failures through reducing the stress concentration on the carbon fibers interface and the shear stress between two sliding surfaces. It was also indicated that the wear rates of the hybrid composites decreased with the increasing applied load and sliding distance under water lubrication. And low friction coefficient and low wear rate could be achieved at high sliding velocity.  相似文献

The use of textile reinforcing structures provides enormous possibilities in the design of lightweight composites. However, the physical mechanisms during fabric forming are complex and far from being fully understood especially in multilayer draping. The aims of this study are the analyses of interaction mechanisms of individual textile layers during the forming operation and of defects arising from interactions. In basic experiments of the carbon woven fabric, friction properties and the fabric integrity were investigated. In single and multilayer draping experiments the findings were transferred to the composite preforming process. Interaction defects are characterised as interdependency between the acting inter-ply shear forces and the structural integrity of the fabric. The defects resulting from the interactions depend on the configuration of the fabric (e. g. shearing) and the acting normal forces. The reduction of friction is crucial for the preform quality but is opposite to an actively force-controlled material manipulation.  相似文献

The piezoresistance of a multi-walled carbon nanotube filled silicone rubber composite under uniaxial pressure was studied. The experimental results show that the active carboxyl radical on multi-walled carbon nanotubes can effectively improve the homogeneous distribution and alignment of conductive paths in the composite. As a result, the composite presented positive piezoresistance with improved sensitivity and sensing linearity for pressure, both of which are key parameters for sensor applications.  相似文献

The role of nanoclay on the wear characteristics of nylon 6 nanocomposites processed via different routes is examined in this paper. Pristine clay and organoclay were used in melt-extrusion with the matrix resulting in a largely aggregated and a highly exfoliated morphology, respectively. High exfoliation of pristine clay was also achieved by a water-assist process in melt compounding. Nylon 6/pristine clay composite had the worst wear resistance due to the large aggregated clay particles. For the two nylon 6/exfoliated clay nanocomposites, the one with the organically modified clay outperformed that with the pristine clay exfoliated by water. Detailed study on the wear track and subsurface below of the nylon 6/clay composites using both transmission and scanning electron microscopy provided new insight into the differences in their deformation and damage mechanisms. It was revealed that the interfacial adhesion of clay to matrix, and not the exfoliated morphology of clay, played a critical role in wear. However, exfoliated clay morphology is preferred to aggregate morphology. Hence, the superior wear-performance of nylon 6/organoclay nanocomposite is brought about by a combined effect of fine dispersion of clay platelets in nylon 6, high interfacial interaction between nylon 6 and clay layers, and effective constraint on surrounding nylon 6 material exerted by the clay platelets.  相似文献

Carbon nanotube (CNT)/cellulose composite materials were fabricated in a paper making process optimized for a CNT network to form on the cellulose fibers. The measured electric conductivity was from 0.05 to 671 S/m for 0.5–16.7 wt.% CNT content, higher than that for other polymer composites. The real permittivities were the highest in the microwave region. The unique CNT network structure is thought to be the reason for these high conductivity and permittivity values. Compared to other carbon materials, our carbon CNT/cellulose composite material had improved parameters without decreased mechanical strength. The near-field electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) measured by a microstrip line method depended on the sheet conductivity and qualitatively matched the results of electromagnetic field simulations using a finite-difference time-domain simulator. A high near-field EMI SE of 50-dB was achieved in the 5–10 GHz frequency region with 4.8 wt.% composite paper. The far-field EMI SE was measured by a free space method. Fairly good agreement was obtained between the measured and calculated results. Approximately 10 wt.% CNT is required to achieve composite paper with 20-dB far-field EMI SE.  相似文献

A series of polyurethane (PU)/potassium titanate whiskers (PTW) composites modified by a high molecular weight hydroxyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (HTPDMS) were prepared. The PTW is modified by 2,4-diisocyanatotoluene (2,4-TDI). The effect of the PTW content on the mechanical and tribological properties of the PU composites was studied. Tensile strength of the PU composites increased with the addition of PTW. The friction and wear experiments were tested on a MRH-3 model ring-on-block test rig at different sliding speeds and loads under dry sliding and water lubrication. Experimental results revealed that the small content of PTW contributed to largely improve the tribological properties of the PU composites. The coefficient of friction (COF) of the composites increased and the wear rate value decreased with increasing PTW. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) investigations showed that the worn surfaces of the PTW-reinforced PU composites was smoother than pure polyurethane under given load and sliding speed.  相似文献

For many technical applications friction and wear are critical issues. Reinforced polymer-matrix composites are widely used under vibrating contact condition in various automotive and aerospace applications as well as in structural engineering. In this paper, the friction and wear of bulk epoxy and unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composite have been investigated under reciprocating sliding against either alumina or stainless steel balls in ambient air. The effect of sliding direction with respect to the long and unidirectional carbon fibers has been studied. We demonstrate that the carbon fiber reinforcement greatly improves the tribological properties of the thermoset epoxy: it reduces the coefficient of friction and the debris formation. It was found that on sliding in the anti-parallel direction a more significant degradation takes place than in the parallel direction. The coefficient of friction measured on bulk epoxy sliding against either stainless steel or alumina is around 0.65, whereas the coefficient of friction measured on epoxy reinforced with carbon fibers is significantly lower, namely down to 0.11. It was found that sliding with a stainless steel ball in a direction parallel to the fiber orientation results in a lower coefficient of friction than sliding in anti-parallel direction. The reduced coefficient of friction is largely influenced by the carbon fiber reinforcement due to the auto-protecting film formed as a paste in the contact area and along the wear track edges. The relationship between friction and degradation of the composite material including surface wear and debris formation are discussed based on an in-depth analysis of the worn surfaces by optical and scanning electron microscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy, and white light interferometry.  相似文献

In this paper, stacked-cup carbon nanofibers (CNF) were dispersed in the matrix phase of carbon-fiber-reinforced composites based on a high-performance epoxy system with and without modification by an elastomeric triblock copolymer (TCP) for increased toughness. The addition of the TCP provided an enhancement in toughness at the cost of a slight degradation in modulus and strength. The CNFs, on the other hand, provided significantly enhanced strength and stiffness in matrix-dominated configurations, including tension of quasi-isotropic composites and short beam shear strength of both quasi-isotropic and unidirectional composites. Scanning electron microscopy revealed enhanced adhesion between the matrix and carbon fibers with the addition of either TCP or CNFs. However, CNF agglomeration in the studied systems partially offset the energy dissipation processes brought about by the nanofibers, thereby limiting interlaminar fracture toughness enhancements by CNF addition. These results show good promise for CNFs as low-cost reinforcement for composites while offering insight into the codependent morphologies of multi-scale phases and their influence over bulk properties.  相似文献
