A computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model for tubes in a phase change thermal energy storage system has been developed and validated with experimental results. The heat transfer fluid (HTF) flows in tubes which are configured in a unique arrangement during the charging and discharging processes. Water was used as the phase change material (PCM) which was contained in a cylindrical tank with four tubes coiled inside it. Experiments were conducted for both freezing and melting processes. A three-dimensional CFD model using Ansys code was developed and validated with experimental results. This model endeavoured to describe both the freezing and melting processes of the PCM. The inlet and outlet HTF temperatures as well as nine temperature locations in the PCM were compared with the CFD results. The average effectiveness as well as the duration of the phase change process of each experimental point was also compared with results from the CFD. From this study, it was concluded that the CFD model developed can accurately predict the behaviour of the thermal storage system during charging and discharging. The paper gives details of the CFD model and compares results from the model and experiments.  相似文献

Nanoencapsulated phase change material (NPCM) slurry is a dispersion where the phase change material (PCM) is dispersed in fluid. Compared with fluid, these nanofluids have a higher heat capacity during the phase change and a possible enhancement, as a result of this phase change, in the heat transfer phenomenon. To appreciate the merits, in terms of energy, a numerical study has been carried out with fluid based on NPCM inside double pipe heat exchanger. The numerical simulation results have been validated using experimental heat transfer data. The Reynolds and Nusselt numbers have been determined using thermal conductivity and viscosity evaluated in the same conditions as those in numerical model. The results obtained show an improvement of this energetic criterion at low mass flow rate compared with the base fluid. Analysis of the numerical and analytical results reveal that higher inlet flow rate and NPCM concentration results in higher heat transfer rate. In addition, increasing NPCM slurry temperature decreases its performance due to fast melting of PCM inside the tube.  相似文献

The present study aims to investigate the effect of the pulsed fluid flow on the thermal performance of a latent heat storage unit (LHSU). The storage unit consists of a shell-and-tube in which phase change material (PCM) occupied the shell space and the heat transfer fluid (HTF) flows in the inner tube. The present study is motivated by the need to intensify heat transfer and accelerate melting process in LHSU. A mathematical model based on the conservation equations of energy in both HTF and PCM has been developed. The finite volume approach was used for the discretization of equations. The developed model has been validated by comparing the obtained numerical results with experimental, analytical, and numerical data found in literature. The effects of the pulsation frequency and amplitude, the Reynolds and Stefan numbers on the thermal performance and behavior of the LHSU were investigated. The parametric study showed that the pulsating parameters (frequency and amplitude) affect the thermal performance of the LHSU. The results reveal reduction in the melting time for low pulsating frequency (less than 0.052) and high pulsating amplitude. For pulsating amplitude of 6 and pulsating frequency of 0.01, a reduction up to 13% (at Reynolds number of 500 and Stefan number of 0.16) was obtained. The results also showed that the Reynolds and Stefan numbers strongly affect the heat transfer rate, and the low melting time is obtained for high Reynolds and Stefan numbers.  相似文献

In this study, a feed-forward back-propagation artificial neural network (ANN) algorithm is proposed for heat transfer analysis of phase change process in a finned-tube, latent heat thermal energy storage system. Heat storage through phase change material (PCM) around the finned tube is experimentally studied. A numerical study is performed to investigate the effect of fin and flow parameter by the solving governing equations for the heat transfer fluid, pipe wall and phase change material. Learning process is applied to correlate the total heat stored in different fin types of tubes, various Reynolds numbers and different inlet temperatures. A number of hidden numbers of ANN are trained for the best output prediction of the heat storage. The predicted total heat storage values obtained by an ANN model with extensive sets of non-training experimental data are then compared with experimental measurements and numerical results. The trained ANN model with an absolute mean relative error of 5.58% shows good performance to predict the total amount of heat stored. The ANN results are found to be more accurate than the numerical model results. The present study using ANN approach for heat transfer analysis in phase change heat storage process appears to be significant for practical thermal energy storage applications.  相似文献

This paper presents a numerical investigation on the thermal performance of a solar latent heat storage unit composed of rectangular slabs combined with a flat-plate solar collector. The rectangular slabs of the storage unit are vertically arranged and filled with phase change material (PCM: RT50) dispersed with high conductive nanoparticles (Al2O3). A heat transfer fluid (HTF: water) goes flow in the solar collector and receives solar thermal energy form the absorber area, then circulates between the slabs to transfer heat by forced convection to nanoparticle-enhanced phase change material (NEPCM). A numerical model based on the finite volume method and the conservation equations was developed to model the heat transfer and flow processes in the storage unit. The developed model was validated by comparing the obtained results with the experimental, numerical and theoretical results published in the literature. The thermal performance of the investigated latent heat storage unit combined with the solar collector was evaluated under the meteorological data of a representative day of the month of July in Marrakesh city, Morocco. The effect of the dispersion of high conductive nanoparticles on the thermal behavior and storage performance was also evaluated and compared with the case of base PCM without additives.  相似文献

A theoretical model was developed to predict the transient behavior of a shell-and-tube storage unit with the phase change material (PCM) on the shell side and the heat transfer fluid (HTF) circulating inside the tubes. The multidimensional phase change problem is tackled with an enthalpy-based method coupled to the convective heat transfer from the HTF. The numerical predictions are validated with experimental data. A series of numerical experiments are then undertaken to assess the effects of various thermal and geometric parameters on the heat transfer process and on the behavior of the system. Results show that the shell radius, the mass flow rate, and the inlet temperature of the HTF must be chosen carefully in order to optimize the performance of the unit.  相似文献

This paper presents, compares and validates two different mathematical models of packed bed storage with PCM, more specifically the heat transfer during charge of the PCM. The first numerical model is a continuous model based on the Brinkman equation and the second numerical model treats the PCM capsules as individual particles (energy equation model). Using the Brinkman model the flow field inside the porous media and the heat transfer mechanisms present in the packed bed systems can be described. On the other hand, using the energy equation model the temperature gradient inside the PCM capsules can be analysed. Both models are validated with experimental data generated by the authors. The experimental set up consists mainly of a cylindrical storage tank with a capacity of 3.73 L full of spherically encapsulated PCM. The PCM used has a storage capacity of 175 kJ/kg between ?2–13 °C. The results from the energy equation model show a basic understanding of cold charging. Moreover, three different Nu correlations found in the literature were analysed and compared. All of them showed the same temperature profile of the PCM capsules; hence any of them could be used in future models. The comparison between both mathematical models indicated that free convection is not as important as forced convection in the studied case.  相似文献

Due to the complexity of the fluid flow and heat transfer in packed bed latent thermal energy storage (LTES) systems, many hypotheses were introduced into the previous packed bed models, which consequently influenced the accuracy and authenticity of the numerical calculation. An effective packed bed model was therefore developed, which could investigate the flow field as the fluid flows through the voids of the phase change material (PCM), and at the same time could account for the thermal gradients inside the PCM spheres. The proposed packed bed model was validated experimentally and found to accurately describe the thermo-fluidic phenomena during heat storage and retrieval. The proposed model was then used to do a parametric study on the influence of the arrangement of the PCM spheres and encapsulation of PCM on the heat transfer performance of LTES bed, which was difficult to perform with the previous packed bed models. The results indicated that random packing is more favorable for heat storage and retrieval as compared to special packing; both the material and the thickness of the encapsulation have the apparent effects on the heat transfer performance of the LTES bed.  相似文献

Energy analysis of space solar dynamic heat receivers employing solid–liquid phase change storage is developed. The heat receiver is a critical component of a solar dynamic system. Phase change thermal energy storage is used in the heat receiver. The energy analysis presented here can be used to understand the energy transfer in the heat receiver and thermal energy storage in phase change materials (PCM). The heat receiver cavity radiation mathematical model and the working fluid tube heat model are established. Energy loss, energy absorbed by gas, the latent and sensible thermal energy storage in PCM, maximum tube temperature, gas outlet temperature and liquid PCM fraction were calculated. The results are analyzed and could be used in heat receiver design.  相似文献

This paper is aimed at analyzing the behavior of a packed bed latent heat thermal energy storage system. The packed bed is composed of spherical capsules filled with paraffin wax as PCM usable with a solar water heating system. The model developed in this study uses the fundamental equations similar to those of Schumann, except that the phase change phenomena of PCM inside the capsules are analyzed by using enthalpy method. The equations are numerically solved, and the results obtained are used for the thermal performance analysis of both charging and discharging processes. The effects of the inlet heat transfer fluid temperature (Stefan number), mass flow rate and phase change temperature range on the thermal performance of the capsules of various radii have been investigated. The results indicate that for the proper modeling of performance of the system the phase change temperature range of the PCM must be accurately known, and should be taken into account.  相似文献

The latent thermal energy storage system of the shell-and-tube type during charging and discharging has been analysed in this paper. An experimental and numerical investigation of transient forced convective heat transfer between the heat transfer fluid (HTF) with moderate Prandtl numbers and the tube wall, heat conduction through the wall and solid–liquid phase change of the phase change material (PCM), based on the enthalpy formulation, has been presented. A fully implicit two-dimensional control volume Fortran computer code, with algorithm for non-isothermal phase transition, has been developed for the solution of the corresponding mathematical model. The comparison between numerical predictions and experimental data shows good agreement for both paraffin non-isothermal melting and isothermal solidification. In order to provide guidelines for system performance and design optimisation, unsteady temperature distributions of the HTF, tube wall and the PCM have been obtained by a series of numerical calculations for various HTF working conditions and various geometric parameters, and the thermal behaviour of the latent thermal energy storage unit during charging and discharging has been simulated.  相似文献

A latent heat thermal energy storage system using a phase change material (PCM) is an efficient way of storing or releasing a large amount of heat during melting or solidification. It has been determined that the shell‐and‐tube type heat exchanger is the most promising device as a latent heat system that requires high efficiency for a minimum volume. In this type of heat exchanger, the PCM fills the annular shell space around the finned tube while the heat transfer fluid flows within the tube. One of the methods used for increasing the rate of energy storage is to increase the heat transfer surface area by employing finned surfaces. In this study, energy storage by phase change around a radially finned tube is investigated numerically and experimentally. The solution of the system consists of the solving governing equations for the heat transfer fluid (HTF), pipe wall and phase change material. Numerical simulations are performed to investigate the effect of several fin parameters (fin spacing and fin diameter) and flow parameter (Re number and inlet temperature of HTF) and compare with experimental results. The effect of each variable on energy storage and amount of solidification are presented graphically. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A latent heat storage unit incorporating heat pipes embedded in phase change material (PCM) is developed and tested for a novel application in low energy cooling of buildings. A one-dimensional mathematical model of the heat transfer from air to PCM is presented to allow sizing of a test unit. Details of the construction and testing of one heat pipe/PCM unit in a controlled environment are described, and measurements of heat transfer rate and melting times are presented. When the difference between air and PCM temperature was 5°C, the heat transfer rate was approximately 40 W over a melt period of 19 h. The heat transfer rate could be improved, and the phase change time shortened, with an alternative design for finning of the heat pipe inside the PCM.  相似文献

A new microencapsulated PCM (Phase Change Material) slurry (MEPCS) at high concentration (45% w/w) was developed based on microencapsulated Rubitherm RT6. Its heat storage and heat transfer characteristics have been experimentally investigated in order to assess its suitability for integration into a low temperature heat storage system for solar air conditioning applications. Differential scanning calorimetry tests have been conducted to evaluate the cold storage capacity and phase change temperature range. An experimental setup was built in order to quantify the natural convection heat transfer occurring from a vertical helically coiled tube immersed in the MEPCS. First, tests were carried out using water in order to obtain natural convection heat transfer correlations and then a comparison was made with the results obtained for the MEPCS. It was found that inside the phase change interval the values of the heat transfer coefficient for the MEPCS were significantly higher than for water, under identical temperature conditions.  相似文献

This paper addresses a numerical and experimental investigation of a thermal energy storage unit involving phase change process dominated by heat conduction. The thermal energy storage unit involves a triplex concentric tube with phase change material (PCM) filling in the middle channel, with hot heat transfer fluid (HHTF) flowing outer channel during charging process and cold heat transfer fluid (CHTF) flowing inner channel during discharging process. A simple numerical method according to conversation of energy, called temperature & thermal resistance iteration method has been developed for the analysis of PCM solidification and melting in the triplex concentric tube. To test the physical validity of the numerical results, an experimental apparatus has been designed and built by which the effect of the inlet temperature and the flow rate of heat transfer fluid (HTF, including HHTF and CHTF) on the thermal energy storage has been studied. Comparison between the numerical predictions and the experimental data shows good agreement. Graphical results including fluid temperature and interface of solid and liquid phase of PCM versus time and axial position, time-wise variation of energy stored/released by the system were presented and discussed.  相似文献

A numerical and experimental investigation of phase change process dominated by heat conduction in a thermal storage unit is presented in this paper. The thermal energy storage involves a shell and tube arrangement where paraffin wax as phase change material (PCM) is filled in the shell. Water as heat transfer fluid (HTF) is passed inside the tube for both charging and discharging cycles. According to the conservation of energy, a simple numerical method called alternative iteration between thermal resistance and temperature has been developed for the analysis of heat transfer between the PCM and HTF during charging and discharging cycles. Experimental arrangement has been designed and built to examine the physical validity of the numerical results. Comparison between the numerical predictions and the experimental data shows a good agreement. A detailed parametric study is also carried out for various flow parameters and system dimensions such as different mass flow rates, inlet temperatures of HTF, tube thicknesses and radii. Numerical study reveals that the contribution of the inlet temperature of HTF has much influence than mass flow rate in terms of storage operating time and HTF outlet temperature. Tube radius is a more important parameter than thickness for better heat transfer between HTF and PCM.  相似文献

A computational model for the prediction of the thermal behaviour of a compact multi-layer latent heat storage unit is presented. The model is based on the conservation equations of energy for the phase change material (PCM) and the heat transfer fluid (HTF). Electrical heat sources embedded inside the PCM are used for heat storage (melting) while the flow of an HTF is employed for heat recovery (solidification). Parametric studies are performed to assess the effect of various design parameters and operating conditions on the thermal behaviour of the unit. Results indicate that the average output heat load during the recovery period is strongly dependent on the minimum operating temperature, on the thermal diffusivity of the liquid phase, on the thickness of the PCM layer and on the HTF inlet mass flowrate and temperature. It is, on the other hand, nearly independent of the wall thermal diffusivity and thickness and of the maximum operating temperature. Correlations are proposed for the total energy stored and the output heat load as a function of the design parameters and the operating conditions. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this study, the cylindrical phase change storage tank linked to a solar powered heat pump system is investigated experimentally and theoretically. A simulation model defining the transient behaviour of the phase change unit was used. In the tank, the phase change material (PCM) is inside cylindrical tubes and the heat transfer fluid (HTF) flows parallel to it. The heat transfer problem of the model (treated as two-dimensional) was solved numerically by an enthalpy-based finite differences method and validated against experimental data. The experiments were performed from November to May in the heating seasons of 1992–1993 and 1993–1994 to measure both the mean temperature of water within the tank and the inlet and outlet water temperature of the tank. The experimentally obtained inlet water temperatures are also taken as inlet water temperature of the simulated model. Thus, theoretical temperature and stored heat energy distribution within the tank have been determined. Solar radiation and space heating loads for the heating seasons mentioned above are also presented.  相似文献

The enhancement of heat transfer in a thermal storage system consisting of a cylindrical vertical tube with internal longitudinal fin arrangement is discussed in this paper. This configuration that forms a V-shaped enclosure for the phase change material (PCM) gives maximum benefit to the fin arrangement. A theoretical model that also accounts for the circumferential heat flow through the tube wall is developed using enthalpy formulation and is employed in conjunction with the fully implicit finite difference method to solve the solidification in the convectively cooled vertical tube. A generalised enthalpy-temperature (H-T) relationship, developed by Date, is suitable for constant phase change temperature and this is modified in the present work to accommodate materials having either constant or a range of phase change temperatures. The numerical model is validated with experimental data. The instantaneous surface heat flux and the solidified fraction for different number of fins and tube radii, that are of interest for the design of latent heat thermal storage system consisting of an array of vertical cylindrical tubes containing PCM inside it, are also discussed in this article.  相似文献
