Having very strong current on the west coast with up to 10 m tidal range, there are many suitable sites for the application of tidal current power (TCP) in Korea. The turbine, which initially converts the tidal energy, is an important component because it affects the efficiency of the entire system. To design a turbine that can extract the maximum power on the site, the depth and duration of current velocity with respect to direction should be considered. To extract a significant quantity of power, a tidal current farm with a multi-arrangement is necessary in the ocean. The interactions between devices contribute significantly to the total power capacity. Thus, the study of wake propagation is necessary to understand the evolution of the wake behind a turbine. This paper introduces configuration design of horizontal axis tidal current turbine based on the blade element theory, and evaluating its performance with CFD. The maximum efficiency of the designed turbine was calculated as 40% at a tip speed ratio (TSR) of 5. The target capacity of 300 kW was generated at the design velocity, and the performance was stable over a wide range of rotating speeds. To investigate the wakes behind the turbine, unsteady simulation was carried out. The wake velocity distribution was obtained, and velocity deficit was calculated. A large and rapid recovery was observed from 2D to 8D downstream, followed by a much slower recovery beyond. The velocity was recovered up to 86% at 18D downstream.  相似文献

The study concentrates on the shape design and numerical analysis of a 1 MW horizontal axis tidal current turbine (HATCT), which can be applied near the southwest regions of Korea. On the basis of actual tidal current conditions of south-western region of Korea, configuration design of 1 MW class turbine rotor blade is carried out by blade element momentum theory (BEMT). The hydrodynamic performance including the lift and drag forces, is conducted with the variation of the angle of attack using an open source code of X-Foil. The optimized blade geometry is used for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis with hexahedral numerical grids. This study focuses on developing a new hydrofoil and designing a blade with relatively shorter chord length in contrast to a typical TCT blade. Therefore, after a thorough study of two common hydrofoils, (S814 and DU-91-W2-250, which show good performance for rough conditions), a new hydrofoil, MNU26, is developed. The new hydrofoil has a 26% thickness that can be applied throughout the blade length, giving good structural strength. Power coefficient, pressure and velocity distributions are investigated according to Tip Speed Ratio by CFD analysis. As cavitation analysis is also an important part of the study, it is investigated for all the three hydrofoils. Due to the shorter chord length of the new turbine blade in contrast to a typical TCT blade design, a Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) analysis is also done. Concrete conclusions have been made after comparing the three hydrofoils, considering their performance, efficiency, occurrence of cavitation and structural feasibility.  相似文献

The hydrodynamic forces imparted on a tidal turbine rotor, whilst causing it to rotate and hence generate power, will also cause the blades to deform. This deformation will affect the turbine's performance if not included in the early design phase and could lead to a decrease in power output and a reduction in operational life. Conversely, designing blades to allow them to deform slightly may reduce localised stress and therefore prolong the life of the blades and allow the blades to deform in to their optimum operational state. The aim of this paper is to better understand the kinetic energy extraction by varying the material modulus of a turbine blade. Shaft torque/power, blade tip displacement, and axial thrust results are presented for 2, 3 and 4 bladed rotor configurations at peak power extraction. For the rotor design studied the FSI model data show that there is a low sensitivity to blade deformation for the 2, 3 and 4 bladed rotors. However, the results reveal that the 3 bladed rotor displayed maximum hydrodynamic performance as a rigid structure which then decreased as the blade deformed. The 2 and 4 bladed rotor configurations elucidated a slight increase in hydrodynamic performance with deflection.  相似文献

The results of a detailed experimental investigation of the near-wake (up to seven turbine diameters downstream) of a model horizontal axis tidal turbine (HATT) device in a large-scale recirculating water channel facility are reported. An Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter is used to provide detailed three-dimensional mean and turbulent flow field information at five different depths across the full width of the channel downstream of the turbine, giving the most complete three-dimensional velocities and Reynolds normal and shear stress data set yet available. In addition the Reynolds-stress anisotropy tensor is used to illustrate the degree of anisotropy of the Reynolds stress within the turbine's wake. These results reveal the strongly anisotropic nature of the near-wake turbulence suggesting isotropic turbulence models should not be used to model near-wake dynamics. Finally the power-law decay rates of the maximum normalised turbulent kinetic energy differ significantly from those found downstream of grids, meshes or perforated disks, suggesting that previous modelling approaches, which neglected swirl effects and modelled the turbine by absorption discs, may significantly over predict the turbulent kinetic energy decay rate of HATT wakes.  相似文献

Large eddy simulations of a model scale tidal turbine encountering inflow turbulence have been performed. This has allowed both unsteady blade loading and hydrodynamic noise radiation to be predicted. The study is motivated by the need to assess environmental impact of tidal devices, in terms of their acoustic impact on marine species.Inflow turbulence was accounted for using a synthetic turbulence generator, with statistics chosen to represent the gross features of a typical tidal flow. The turbine is resolved in a fully unsteady manner using a sliding interface technique within the OpenFOAM® libraries. Acoustic radiation is estimated using a compact source approximation of the Ffowcs Williams–Hawkings equation.It is observed that the long streamwise length scale of the inflow turbulence results in characteristic ‘humps’ in the turbine thrust and torque spectra. This effect is also evident in the far-field noise spectra. The acoustic sources on the blades are visualised in terms of sound pressure level and “Powell's source term”. These measures show that the dominant sources are concentrated at the blade leading edges towards the tip. This results from the high loading of the turbine blades, and causes the sound to radiate more akin to a monopole than a dipole.The full scale source level, obtained from scaling of the simulation results, is found to be lower than comparable measured data reported in the literature; this is attributed to additional sources not included in the present study. Based on the predicted source level, no physical impact on fish is expected.  相似文献

The present study aims to understand the energy conversion mechanism of a 100 kW horizontal axis tidal stream turbine by analyzing thrust, torque, and wake flow measurements. The scale ratio of the turbine model was 1/20 and model tests for power and wake measurements were conducted in a towing tank facility. Wake fields were measured by a towed underwater stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (SPIV) system. The chord-length based Reynolds number at 40% of the radius of the turbine ranged from 53,000 to 63,000 in the test conditions. The turbine model showed the highest power coefficient at a tip speed ratio (TSR) of 3.5, and the magnitude of power coefficient was 0.278. Three TSR conditions were selected for SPIV measurement after power measurement tests, representing heavy loading, highest efficiency, and light loading, respectively. In the wake field measurement results, conversion of kinetic energy of the turbine wake was investigated, decomposing it into effectively extracted work, loss due to the drag on the turbine system, kinetic energy of the time-mean axial flow, local flow structures, turbulence, and secondary flow loss. In high TSR conditions with a small angle of attack onto the turbine blade, the secondary flow loss was minimized.  相似文献

Based on an unperturbed airflow assumption and using a set of validated modelling methods, a series of activities were carried out to optimise an aerodynamic design of a small wind turbine for a built up area, where wind is significantly weaker and more turbulent than those open sites preferable for wind farms. These activities includes design of the blades using a FORTRAN code; design of the nose cones and nacelles, which then constituted the rotor along with the blades; optimisation of the rotor designs in the virtual wind tunnel developed in the first part of the study; and finally, estimation of the annual power output of this wind turbine calculated using hourly wind data of a real Scottish Weather Station. The predicted annual output of the finalised rotor was then compared with other commercial turbines and result was rather competitive.  相似文献

The design of wind turbine blades is a true multi-objective engineering task. The aerodynamic effectiveness of the turbine needs to be balanced with the system loads introduced by the rotor. Moreover the problem is not dependent on a single geometric property, but besides other parameters on a combination of aerofoil family and various blade functions. The aim of this paper is therefore to present a tool which can help designers to get a deeper insight into the complexity of the design space and to find a blade design which is likely to have a low cost of energy. For the research we use a Computational Blade Optimisation and Load Deflation Tool (CoBOLDT) to investigate the three extreme point designs obtained from a multi-objective optimisation of turbine thrust, annual energy production as well as mass for a horizontal axis wind turbine blade. The optimisation algorithm utilised is based on Multi-Objective Tabu Search which constitutes the core of CoBOLDT. The methodology is capable to parametrise the spanning aerofoils with two-dimensional Free Form Deformation and blade functions with two tangentially connected cubic splines. After geometry generation we use a panel code to create aerofoil polars and a stationary Blade Element Momentum code to evaluate turbine performance. Finally, the obtained loads are fed into a structural layout module to estimate the mass and stiffness of the current blade by means of a fully stressed design. For the presented test case we chose post optimisation analysis with parallel coordinates to reveal geometrical features of the extreme point designs and to select a compromise design from the Pareto set. The research revealed that a blade with a feasible laminate layout can be obtained, that can increase the energy capture and lower steady state systems loads. The reduced aerofoil camber and an increased L/D-ratio could be identified as the main drivers. This statement could not be made with other tools of the research community before.  相似文献

Horizontal axis wind turbines operate under yawed conditions for a considerable period of time due to the power control mechanism or sudden changes in the wind direction. This in turn can alter the dynamic characteristics of a turbine blade because the flow over the rotor plane may trigger complicated induced velocity patterns. In this study, an aeroelastic analysis under yawed flow conditions is carried out to investigate the effects of yaw error on the blade behaviors and dynamic stability. A beam model including geometric nonlinearity coupled with unsteady aerodynamics based on a free-vortex wake method with the blade element theory is employed in the present study. The aerodynamic approach for a horizontal axis wind turbine blade under yawed flow conditions is verified through comparison with measurements. It is also shown that the present method gives slightly better results at high yaw angles than does the method previously published in the literature. The dynamic instabilities of a National Renewable Energy Laboratory 5 MW reference wind turbine have subsequently been investigated for various wind speeds and yaw angles. Observations are made that yaw effects induce considerable changes in airloads and blade structural behavior. Also, the aeroelastic damping values for this particular blade under yawed flow conditions can be reduced by up to approximately 33% in the worst case. Therefore, it is concluded that the impacts of yaw misalignments adversely influenced the dynamic aeroelastic stability of the horizontal axis wind turbine blade.  相似文献

The stress and deflection of straight and helical-bladed vertical axis turbines was investigated using hydrodynamic and structural analysis models. Using Double Multiple Streamtube (DMS) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models, the hydrodynamic forces and pressures on the turbines were modelled for three rotational rates from startup to over speed conditions. The results from these hydrodynamic models were then used to determine stress and total deflection levels using beam theory and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) methods. Maximum stress and deflection levels were found when the blades were in the furthest upstream region, with the highest stresses found at the blade-strut joints for the turbines studied. The helical turbine exhibited on average 13% lower maximum stress levels than the straight-bladed turbine, due to the helical distribution of the blades around the rotational axis. All simulation models offered similar accuracy when predicting maximum blade stress and deflection levels; however for detailed analysis of the blade-strut joints the more computationally demanding CFD-FEA models were required. Straight-bladed, rather than helical turbines, are suggested to be more suited for tidal installations, as for the same turbine frontal area they produce higher power output with only 13% greater structural stress loading.  相似文献

The design of turbine blades is a critical issue in the performance of vertical-axis wind-turbines (VAWTs). In a previous study, it is discovered that a loss of thrust in VAWT blades with a wave-like leading edge can be attributed primarily to vortex distribution. This finding prompted us to apply the wave-like blade design to the trailing edge rather than the leading edge. In this study, computational fluid dynamics was used to observe the flow field on straight and tubercle blades in order to predict the resulting thrust and power performance. Increasing the amplitude and wavelength of the tubercle was shown to increase the maximum thrust by as much as 2.31% and the power coefficient by 16.4%, compared to a straight blade. Furthermore, the overall and maximum thrust performance of blades with a modified trailing edge was shown to exceed those of blades with a wave-like leading edge, due to a shift in the location of the vortices by the induced flow.  相似文献

A brief summary of the main challenges of rotor design in wind energy conversion (WEC) systems, most notably the horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT), are presented. One of the limiting factors in HAWT design is choosing the rated capacity to maximize power output and turbine longevity. One such strategy to accomplish this goal is to widen the operational range of the WEC system by using pitch or torque control, which can be costly and subject to mechanical failure. We present a morphing airfoil concept, which passively controls airfoil pitch through elastic deformation. As a justification of the concept, a two‐dimensional fluid‐structure interaction routine is used to simulate the aeroelastic response of a symmetric NACA 0012 blade subjected to variable loading. The results suggest that the morphing blade can be designed to offer superior average lift to drag ratios over a specified range of attack angles by up to 4.2%, and possibly even higher. This infers that the morphing blade design can increase the power production of WEC systems while conceivably reducing cost because the passive deformation of the morphing turbine does not require active control systems that come at an added upfront and maintenance cost. This paper described the design on the lab-scale horizontal continuous stirred-tank reactor (HCSTR) that the effective working volume is relatively large and the performance is stable at lower agitating speed. Using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation with an ethanol-type fermentation process experiment we determined the optimal agitating speed range for the bio-hydrogen production from analysis on the flow pattern generated at the various agitating speed conditions and select and the suitable three phase separator design has been constructed for gas–liquid–solid three phase separations. The experimental results in the designed bioreactor show that the agitating speeds of 50 rpm is most suited for economical bio-hydrogen production and three phase separation. It was consistent with the prediction from CFD simulation. The information obtained from this study is expected to provide basic knowledge on the optimal design of bioreactor and three phase separator aimed for scale up of the continuous stirred-tank reactor for bio-hydrogen production.  相似文献

Wind-lens turbines (WLTs) exhibit the prospect of a higher output power and more suitability for urban areas in comparison to bare wind turbines. The wind-lens typically comprises a diffuser shroud coupled with a flange appended to the exit periphery of the shroud. Wind-lenses can boost the velocity of the incoming wind through the turbine rotor owing to the creation of a low-pressure zone downstream the flanged diffuser. In this paper, the aerodynamic performance of the wind-lens is computationally assessed using high-fidelity transient CFD simulations for shrouds with different profiles, aiming to assess the effect of change of some design parameters such as length, area ratio and flange height of the diffuser shroud on the power augmentation. The power coefficient (Cp) is calculated by solving the URANS equations with the aid of the SST k–ω model. Furthermore, comparisons with experimental data for validation are accomplished to prove that the proposed methodology could be able to precisely predict the aerodynamic behavior of the wind-lens turbine. The results affirm that wind-lens with cycloidal profile yield an augmentation of about 58% increase in power coefficient compared to bare wind turbine of the same rotor swept-area. It is also emphasized that diffusers (cycloid type) of small length could achieve a twice increase in power coefficient while maintaining large flange heights.  相似文献

The prediction of dynamic characteristics for a floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) is challenging because of the complex load coupling of aerodynamics, hydrodynamics, and structural dynamics. These loads should be accurately calculated to yield reliable analysis results in the design phase of a FOWT. In this study, a high‐fidelity fluid‐structure interaction simulation that simultaneously considers the influence of aero‐hydrodynamic coupling due to the dynamic motion of a FOWT has been conducted using computational fluid dynamics based on an overset grid technique. The DeepCwind semisubmersible floating platform with the NREL 5‐MW baseline wind turbine model is considered for objective numerical verification with the NREL FAST code. A state‐of‐the‐art computational model based on the coupled computational fluid dynamics and dynamic structure analysis is constructed and analyzed to solve multiphase flow, 6 degrees of freedom motions of OC4 semisubmersible FOWT. A quasi‐static mooring solver is also applied to resolve the constraint motion of floater because of a 3‐line mooring system. The influence of tower shadow on the unsteady aerodynamic performance and loads is also demonstrated. Finally, complex unsteady flow fields considering blade and tower interference effects among blade‐tip vortices, shedding vortices, and turbulent wakes are numerically visualized and investigated in detail.  相似文献

Radial inflow turbine is one of the crucial components of organic Rankine cycle (ORC) system, which has great impact on the performance of system. R245fa was selected as the working fluid to recycle the waste heat source with a temperature of 350 to 400 K. The genetic algorithm (GA) was employed in thermodynamic design to optimize the 10 key design parameters, which are needed in aerodynamic design of the ORC turbine. Isotropic efficiency was the fitness function of 10 key variables in GA. The three‐dimensional geometry model was built based on the thermodynamic and aerodynamic design and then was imported into the commercial software ANSYS‐CFX to conduct viscous numerical simulation. Based on the three‐dimensional simulation, the off‐design performance in different mass flow rate, static inlet temperature coupled with different rotational speed was investigated respectively. The results show that at design condition, the maximum efficiency deviation is only 2.5% with the rotational speed variations among the range of 10%, so the radial inflow turbine designed in this research possesses great off‐design performance.  相似文献

The objective of this paper is to present the performance comparison of 2D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis with experimental analysis of 0.6 m impulse turbine with fixed guide vanes for both 0.6 and 0.7 hub to tip ratio (H/T). Also the comparison of 2D CFD analysis of the said turbine with different values of H/T ranging from 0.5 to 0.7. A 2D-cascade model was used for CFD analysis while uni-directional steady flow was used for experimental analysis. The blade and guide vane geometries are based on 0.6 m rotor diameter, with optimum profile, and different H/T of 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7. It was concluded from 2D CFD analysis that 0.5 H/T ratio performances was higher than that of 0.6 and 0.7 H/T at peak efficiency and the operational flow range for 0.5 H/T was found to be wider than that of 0.6 and 0.7 H/T ratio.  相似文献

为提高垂直轴风力机气动性能,提出一种随相位角变化而改变相对夹角的分流导叶结构。以NACA0021为基础翼型,采用计算流体力学方法对分流导叶作用下垂直轴风力机风能利用系数、单叶片瞬时转矩、压力系数及速度场进行数值分析。结果表明:静态和动态分流导叶均可提高垂直轴风力机气动性能,且动态分流导叶提升效果更为显著;相较于静态分流导叶,动态分流导叶垂直轴风力机在尖速比为2.33时风能利用系数最高可提升23%,在尖速比为2.03时静态分流导叶垂直轴风力机较原始垂直轴风力机风能利用系数提高37%;分流导叶也可使最佳尖速比前移,稳定叶片转矩波动,提升垂直轴风力机的运行稳定性。  相似文献
