Imported measles. A potential control problem

From Dec 23, 1978, through Jan 31, 1979, an outbreak of five laboratory-confirmed cases and four clinical cases of measles occurred in a Vietnamese refugee population living in a single housing complex in Albuquerque, NM. The index cases were in two refugee siblings in whom measles was incubating on arrival in the United States. Despite spread through three subsequent generations of disease transmission within the Vietnamese population, there was no additional spread into the general Albuquerque population. Responsible factors included the age distribution of susceptible persons, the social isolation of the refugee population, and the physical structure of the housing complex. There is a need to identify the problem of imported measles in "ethnic islands" in need of vaccination.     

Solution to the problem of longitudinal-force equilibrium in the deformation zone during flat rolling

The differential equation of longitudinal-force equilibrium has been solved when contact normal stresses and a friction function in the deformation zone of a strip are approximated by power functions. The solution can be applied for most flat rolling conditions.     

Marginal irregularity of flat elevated type of colorectal tumor as a marker of malignant potential

The open reading frame yjbR which had been sequenced as a part of the Bacillus subtilis genome project encodes a putative 40.9-kDa protein. The yjbR-coding sequence was slightly similar to those of bacterial sarcosine oxidases and possibly compatible with the tertiary structure of the porcine kidney D-amino acid oxidase. The yjbR gene product was overproduced in Escherichia coli, purified to homogeneity from the recombinant strain, and characterized. This protein effectively catalyzed the oxidation of sarcosine (N-methylglycine), N-ethylglycine and glycine. Lower activities on D-alanine, D-valine, and D-proline were detected although no activities were shown on L-amino acids and other D-amino acids. Since glycine is a product and not a substrate for sarcosine oxidase, this protein is not a type of demethylating enzymes but a novel deaminating oxidase, named glycine oxidase as a common name. Several enzymatic properties of the B. subtilis glycine oxidase were also investigated.     

Aedes albopictus: a potential problem in the United Kingdom

The United Kingdom is within the geographical area in which Aedes albopictus could survive. A large number of used car tyres are imported and a number of introduced cases of dengue fever occur annually. The health authorities should be aware of the possibility of dengue transmission.

Strong and weak principles for progressing from precontemplation to action on the basis of twelve problem behaviors.

Two principles for progressing from the precontemplation stage of change to the action stage were discovered. The strong principle states that progression from precontemplation to action is a function of approximately a 1 standard deviation increase in the pros of a health behavior change. The weak principle states that progression from precontemplation to action is a function of approximately a 1/2 standard deviation decrease in the cons of a health behavior change. In Study 1, these principles were derived from cross-sectional data on 12 problem behaviors relating the pros and cons of changing to the stages of change. In Study 2, these principles were validated on cross-sectional data from an independent sample of 1,466 smokers. Reconstitution and pigment-binding properties of recombinant CP29

The minor light-harvesting chlorophyll-a/b-binding protein CP29 (Lhcb4), overexpressed in Escherichia coli, has been reconstituted in vitro with pigments. The recombinant pigment-protein complexes show biochemical and spectral properties identical to the native CP29 purified from maize thylakoids. The xanthophyll lutein is the only carotenoid necessary for reconstitution, a finding consistent with the structural role of two lutein molecules/polypeptide suggested by the crystallographic data for the homologous protein light-harvesting chlorophyll-a/b-binding protein of photosystem II (LHCII). The CP29 protein scaffold can accommodate different chromophores. This conclusion was deduced by the observation that the pigment composition of the reconstituted protein depends on the pigments present in the reconstitution mixture. Thus, in addition to a recombinant CP29 identical to the native one, two additional forms of the complex could be obtained by increasing chlorophyll b content. This finding is typical of CP29 because the major LHCII complex shows an absolute selectivity for chromophore binding [Plumley, F. G. & Schmidt, G. W. (1987) Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. USA 84, 146-150; Paulsen, H., Rümler, U. & Rüdiger, W. (1990) Planta (Heidelb.) 181, 204-211], and it is consistent with the higher stability of CP29 during greening and in chlorophyll b mutants compared with LHCII.
