Chitosan–multiwalled carbon nanotubes/hydroxyapatite nanocomposites were synthesized by a novel in situ precipitation method. The electrostatic adsorption between multiwalled carbon nanotubes and chitosan was investigated and explained by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis. Morphology studies showed that uniform distribution of hydroxyapatite particles and multiwalled carbon nanotubes in the polymer matrix was observed. In chitosan–multiwalled carbon nanotubes/hydroxyapatite nanocomposites, the diameters of multiwalled carbon nanotubes were about 10 nm. The mechanical properties of the composites were evaluated by measuring their compressive strength and elastic modulus. The elastic modulus and compressive strength increased sharply from 509.9 to 1089.1 MPa and from 33.2 to 105.5 MPa with an increase of multiwalled carbon/chitosan weight ratios from 0 to 5 %, respectively. Finally, the cell biocompatibility of the composites was tested in vitro, which showed that they have good biocompatibility. These results suggest that the chitosan–multiwalled carbon nanotubes/hydroxyapatite nanocomposites are promising biomaterials for bone tissue engineering.  相似文献

This article reports effects of alignment of embedded carbon nanotubes in a polycarbonate polymer matrix under magnetic, direct and alternating current electric fields on the electrical properties of the resulting nanocomposites. Composites consisting of different quantities of carbon nanotubes in a polycarbonate matrix have been prepared using a solution casting technique. The effects of field strength and nanotube concentration on the resulted network structure and conductivity of the composites were studied by in situ optical microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and four-point probe technique. The results showed that the composites prepared in the presence of field had better conductivity than those of as-prepared composites. It was also concluded that the application of alternating current electric field and magnetic field in this system led to the formation of relatively continuing networks while direct current electric field only prevented agglomeration of the carbon nanotubes in the polycarbonate matrix and created relatively uniform distribution of nanotubes in the matrix.  相似文献

Nanoparticle fluid suspensions were prepared using photochemically functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes in polar base fluids. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes prepared by catalytic chemical vapour deposition technique have been functionalized by irradiating with ultraviolet light of wavelength 254 nm. The photochemical oxidation of multiwalled carbon nanotubes under UV irradiation introduces oxygen containing functional groups onto the surface of the nanotubes, generating new defects on their structure. Silver nanoparticles have been deposited over multiwalled carbon nanotubes by chemical method. The enhancement in thermal conductivity of the prepared nanofluids using functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes and Ag nanoparticles deposited functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes with volume fraction, temperature and aspect ratio has been demonstrated. Silver deposited functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes based nanofluids in DI water with 0.02% volume fraction exhibit a thermal conductivity enhancement of 9.9% and 47% at room temperature and at 50 degrees C respectively.  相似文献

The thermal conductivity of individual multiwalled carbon nanotubes was measured by utilizing the four-point-probe third-harmonic method, based on the fact that the third harmonic amplitude and phase as a response to applied alternate current at fundamental frequency, omega, can be expressed in terms of thermal conductivity and diffusivity. To this end, a microfabricated device composed of four metal electrodes was modified to manufacture nanometer-sized wires by using a focused ion beam source. A carbon nanotube could then be suspended over a deep trench milled by the focused ion beam, preventing heat loss to the substrate. Compared with the two-point-probe technique, a significant improvement in accuracy is assured by using four probes, because the contact contribution to the determination of the thermal conductivity is eliminated, making it possible to measure the correct signals of first and third harmonics. The multiwalled carbon nanotube was modeled as a one-dimensional diffusive energy transporter and its thermal conductivity was measured at room temperature under vacuum to be 300 +/- 20 W/mK.  相似文献

The influence of addition of polyaniline functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (PANI-MWNTs) on the positive temperature coefficient (PTC) characteristics of carbon black (CB) filled high-density polyethylene (HDPE) nanocomposite materials have been studied. Polymer nanocomposites were prepared by the combined solution and melt-mixing process. The experimental results showed that the PTC intensity and maximum resistivity of the hybrid nanocomposites were obviously influenced by the polyaniline functionalization of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). A noticeable PTC of resistivity was observed for PANI-MWNTs/CB/HDPE hybrid nanocomposites near the melting point of HDPE. This is due to the significant volume expansion near the melting point of the HDPE in presence of hybrid fillers and a sudden increase of the resistivity due to the disconnection of the conductive paths. The PTC effect of CB/HDPE composites can be effectively modified by the addition of PANI-MWNTs.  相似文献

We present repeated structural and electrical measurements on individual multiwalled carbon nanotubes, alternating between electrical measurements under ambient conditions and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The multiwalled carbon nanotubes made by chemical vapor deposition were manipulated onto cantilever electrodes extending from a specially designed microfabricated chip. Repeated TEM investigations were then made of the progressive destruction of the nanotube structure induced by Joule heating in air. The electrical measurements indicate that the studied nanotubes behave as diffusive conductors with remarkably predictable electrical properties despite extensive structural damage.  相似文献

In this paper, the electrical conductivity and mechanical properties such as elastic modulus of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) reinforced polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites were investigated both experimentally and theoretically. MWCNT-PP nanocomposites samples were produced using injection mold at different injection velocities. The range of the CNT fillers is from 0 up to 12?wt%. The influence of the injection velocity and the volume fraction of CNTs on both electrical conductivity and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were studied. The injection speed showed some effect on the electrical conductivity, but no significant influence on the mechanical properties such as elastic modulus and stress-strain relations of the composites under tensile loading. Parallel to the experimental investigation, for electrical conductivity, a percolation theory was applied to study the electrical conductivity of the nanocomposite system in terms of content of nanotubes. Both Kirkpatrick (Rev Mod Phys 45:574?C588, 1973) and McLachlan et?al. (J Polym Sci B 43:3273?C3287, 2005) models were used to determine the transition from low conductivity to high conductivity in which designates as percolation threshold. It was found that the percolation threshold of CNT/PP composites is close to 3.8?wt%. For mechanical properties of the system, several micromechanical models were applied to elucidate the elastic properties of the nanocomposites. The results indicate that the interphase between the CNT and the polymers plays an important role in determining the elastic modulus of the system.  相似文献

Functional polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites were prepared by melt compounding with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) as the electrically conductive component and barium titanate (BT) spherical nanoparticles as the ferroelectric component. To make PP electrically conductive, more than 3 wt.% MWNT is required. Surface modification of either MWNT or BT with titanate coupling agent further improves the electrical conductivity of the PP/MWNT/BT ternary nanocomposites. Interestingly, by modifying both MWNT and BT, 2 wt.% MWNT are sufficient to make the ternary nanocomposite electrically conductive. In addition, the incorporation of MWNT greatly increases the dielectric permittivity of PP/BT nanocomposites. However, to retain a low dielectric loss, the MWNT loading should be slightly less than the percolation threshold of the nanocomposites. The improved electrical conductivity and dielectric properties make the ternary nanocomposites attractive in practical applications.  相似文献

Poly(hexamethylene terephthalate) (PHT)/carbon nanotubes (CNT) nanocomposites containing 1% and 3% (w/w) of filler were prepared by two procedures: in situ ring-opening polymerization of hexamethylene terephthalate cyclic oligomers in the presence of CNT and melt blending of PHT/CNT mixtures. Arc discharge multiwalled carbon nanotubes, both pristine (MWCNT) and hydroxyl functionalized (MWCNT-OH), were used. The objective was to evaluate the effect of preparation procedure, nanotube side-wall functionalization and amount of nanotube loaded on properties of PHT. All nanocomposites showed an efficient distribution of the carbon nanotubes within the PHT matrix but interfacial adhesion and reinforcement effect was dependent on both functionalization and nanotubes loading. Significant differences in thermal stability and mechanical properties ascribable to functionalization and processing were observed among the prepared nanocomposites. All the prepared nanocomposites showed enhanced crystallizability due to CNT nucleating effects although changes in melting and glass transition temperatures were not significant.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to investigate temperature dependence of electrical conductivity of carbon nanotube (CNT)/polyester nanocomposites from room temperature to 77 K using four-point probe test method. To produce nanocomposites, various types and amounts of CNTs (0.1, 0.3 and 0.5 wt.%) were dispersed via 3-roll mill technique within a specially formulized resin blend of thermoset polyesters. CNTs used in the study include multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNT) with and without amine functional groups (–NH2). It was observed that the incorporation of carbon nanotubes into resin blend yields electrically percolating networks and electrical conductivity of the resulting nanocomposites increases with increasing amount of nanotubes. However, nanocomposites containing amino functionalized carbon nanotubes exhibit relatively lower electrical conductivity compared to those with non-functionalized carbon nanotubes. To get better interpretation of the mechanism leading to conductive network via CNTs with and without amine functional groups, the experimental results were fitted to fluctuation-induced tunneling through the barriers between the metallic regions model. It was found that the results are in good agreement with prediction of proposed model.

Poly(p-phenylenediamine) (PpPD)/carboxylic acid-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (c-MWCNTs) nanocomposites were prepared by chemical oxidative polymerization using potassium persulfate (K2S2O8) as an oxidant. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE–SEM) and field-emission transmission electron microscopy (FE–TEM) showed that a tubular layer of PpPD was coated on the surface of carbon nanotubes with a thickness of 10–20 nm. FT–IR analysis provided an evidence for the formation of nanocomposites. The thermal stability of nanocomposites was improved by addition of c-MWCNTs as confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). XRD spectra showed that the crystalline nature of PpPD was not affected much by the addition of c-MWCNTs. As the content of c-MWCNTs was increased, the electrical conductivity of the nanocomposites increased due to the interaction between polymer and nanotubes that enhances electron delocalization.  相似文献

The interfacial effects are critical to understand the nanocomposite behavior based on polymer matrices. These effects are dependent upon the morphology of carbon nanotubes, the type of used polymer and the processing technique. Indeed, we show that the different parameters, as the eventual surfactant use, the ultrasonic treatment and shear mixing have to be carefully examined, in particular, for nanotube dispersion and their possible alignment. A series of multiwalled nanotubes (MWNT) have been mixed with a regular epoxy resin under a controlled way to prepare nanocomposites. The influence of nanotube content is examined through helium bulk density, glass transition temperature of the matrix and direct current electrical conductivity measurements. These results, including the value of the percolation threshold, are analyzed in relationship with the mesostructural organization of these nanotubes, which is observed by standard and conductive probe atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements. The wrapping effect of the organic matrix along the nanotubes is evidenced and analyzed to get a better understanding of the final composite characteristics, in particular, for eventually reinforcing the matrix without covalent bonding.  相似文献

Reconsolidation of thermally spray formed (plasma and high velocity oxyfuel spraying) hypereutectic Al–Si nanocomposites with multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) reinforcement was carried out by inert atmosphere sintering for prolonged time periods. The sintering treatment resulted in the removal of porosity and residual stress, and increase in size and volume fraction of primary Si particles in the Al–Si matrix. The morphology of multiwalled carbon nanotubes in sintered nanocomposites remained unchanged after sintering. The interfacial ultrathin product layer of silicon carbide between MWCNT reinforcement and Al–Si matrix was unaltered. Microhardness and elastic modulus of the sintered nanocomposites were influenced by combined effect of multiple factors, i.e. reduction in porosity, residual stress removal and MWCNT distribution. Overall improvement of microhardness and elastic modulus of the sintered nanocomposites was observed. The experimentally measured elastic modulus values were compared with theoretically estimated values using micromechanics models.  相似文献

The effects of boron doping and electron correlation on the transport properties of CVD boron-doped multiwalled carbon nanotubes are reported. The boron-doped multiwalled carbon nanotubes were characterized by TEM as well as Raman spectroscopy using different laser excitations (viz. 488, 514.5 and 647 nm). The intensity of the D-band laser excitation line increased after the boron incorporation into the carbon nanotubes. The G-band width increased on increasing the boron concentration, indicating the decrease of graphitization with increasing boron concentration. Electrical conductivity of the undoped and boron-doped carbon nanotubes reveal a 3-dimensional variable-range-hopping conductivity over a wide range of temperature, viz. from room temperature down to 2 K. The electrical conductivity is not found to be changed significantly by the present levels of B-doping. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) results for the highest B-doped samples showed similarities with previously reported EPR literature measurements, but the low concentration sample gives a very broad ESR resonance line.  相似文献

Commercially available multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) were chemically modified by amine, acid and silane and their ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) based nanocomposites were prepared. Unmodified and modified nanotubes were characterized by thermogravimetry, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Early degradation of modified nanotubes from the thermogravimetry study proved the presence of functional groups on nanotube surface. Increase in D-band to G-band ratio and a shift in radial breathing mode peaks from the Raman spectra indicated the generation of surface defects due to functionalization and variation in van der Waals force of attraction between nanotube aggregates on modification. The unmodified nanotubes improved the tensile strength by 30% with 4 weight% of filler. Amine modification imparted further increase in strength due to the presence of functional groups on the nanotube surface and the subsequent better dispersion of the nanotubes in the polymer matrix. The silane treatment imparted maximum improvement in various properties of the nanocomposites. The nanotubes provided better thermal degradation stability and also higher thermal conductivity to virgin EVA. The results were well supported by the morphological as well as swelling study of the various samples.  相似文献

Conductive films that are both stretchable and flexible could have applications in electronic devices, sensors, actuators and speakers. A substantial amount of research has been carried out on conductive polymer composites, metal electrode-integrated rubber substrates and materials based on carbon nanotubes and graphene. Here we present highly conductive, printable and stretchable hybrid composites composed of micrometre-sized silver flakes and multiwalled carbon nanotubes decorated with self-assembled silver nanoparticles. The nanotubes were used as one-dimensional, flexible and conductive scaffolds to construct effective electrical networks among the silver flakes. The nanocomposites, which included polyvinylidenefluoride copolymer, were created with a hot-rolling technique, and the maximum conductivities of the hybrid silver-nanotube composites were 5,710 S cm?1 at 0% strain and 20 S cm?1 at 140% strain, at which point the film ruptured. Three-dimensional percolation theory reveals that Poisson's ratio for the composite is a key parameter in determining how the conductivity changes upon stretching.  相似文献

Polyaniline doped by Zn2+ ions was synthesized as nanocomposites with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) by in-situ oxidative polymerization and investigated as electrode material for supercapacitors. The uniform coating of polyaniline on MWCNT was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The effect of Zn2+ ions on nanocomposites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The electrochemical performances were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), constant current charging/discharging cyclic test (CC) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) using a three-electrode system. The doped polyaniline composites show higher specific capacitance and better cyclic stability.  相似文献

The block polymer of poly(styrene-b-pyrene) (PS-b-PAH) containing pyrene units was successfully applied on the surface of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and the properties of nanocomposites were enhanced. The morphology of the modified MWNTs was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the results showed that PS-b-PAH helped effectively the MWNTs to disperse well in epoxy matrices, and these dispersed MWNTs were stabilized by the pyrene modifier. The mechanical properties of the composites, such as impact toughness and flexural strength, and the electrical conductivity of the nanocomposites, are improved significantly after the treatment of the MWNTs using PS-b-PAH. The results show that the mechanical and electrical properties of the modified MWNTs/epoxy composites with PS-b-PAH are obviously superior to those of pristine MWNTs/epoxy composites. The enhanced interfacial interactions lead to good dispersion of MWNTs in epoxy matrices, thus enhancing the mechanical and electrical properties of the nanocomposites.  相似文献

Free standing structures of hypereutectic aluminum-23 wt% silicon nanocomposite with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) reinforcement have been successfully fabricated by two different thermal spraying technique viz Plasma Spray Forming (PSF) and High Velocity Oxy-Fuel (HVOF) Spray Forming. Comparative microstructural and mechanical property evaluation of the two thermally spray formed nanocomposites has been carried out. Presence of nanosized grains in the Al-Si alloy matrix and physically intact and undamaged carbon nanotubes were observed in both the nanocomposites. Excellent interfacial bonding between Al alloy matrix and MWCNT was observed. The elastic modulus and hardness of HVOF sprayed nanocomposite is found to be higher than PSF sprayed composites.  相似文献
