Previous research on developing parallel triangulation algorithms concentrated on triangulating planar point sets.O(log3 n) running time algorithms usingO(n) processors have been developed in Refs. 1 and 2. Atallah and Goodrich(3) presented a data structure that can be viewed as a parallel analogue of the sequential plane-sweeping paradigm, which can be used to triangulate a planar point set inO(logn loglogn) time usingO(n) processors. Recently Merks(4) described an algorithm for triangulating point sets which runs inO(logn) time usingO(n) processors, and is thus optimal. In this paper we develop a parallel algorithm for triangulating simplicial point sets in arbitrary dimensions based on the idea of the sequential algorithm presented in Ref. 5. The algorithm runs inO(log2 n) time usingO(n/logn) processors. The algorithm hasO(n logn) as the product of the running time and the number of processors; i.e., an optimal speed-up.  相似文献

We disprove a conjecture of López-Ortiz by showing that the Element Distinctness Problem for n numbers of size O(logn) can be solved in O(n2(logn)3/2(loglogn)1/2) steps by a nondeterministic one-tape Turing machine. Further we give a simplified algorithm for solving the problem for shorter numbers in time O(n2logn) on a deterministic one-tape Turing machine and a new proof of the matching lower bound.  相似文献

The symmetry number of a tree is defined as the number of nodes of the maximum subtree of the tree that exhibits axial symmetry. The best previous algorithm for computing the symmetry number for an unrooted unordered tree is due to [P.P. Mitra, M.A.U. Abedin, M.A. Kashem, Algorithms for solving the symmetry number problem on trees, Inform. Process. Lett. 91 (2004) 163-169] and runs in O(n3) time. In this paper we show an improvement on this time complexity by encoding small trees. Our algorithm runs in time O(n32(loglogn/logn)).  相似文献

In this paper we consider the following problem of computing a map of geometric minimal cuts (called MGMC problem): Given a graph G=(V,E) and a planar rectilinear embedding of a subgraph H=(V H ,E H ) of G, compute the map of geometric minimal cuts induced by axis-aligned rectangles in the embedding plane. The MGMC problem is motivated by the critical area extraction problem in VLSI designs and finds applications in several other fields. In this paper, we propose a novel approach based on a mix of geometric and graph algorithm techniques for the MGMC problem. Our approach first shows that unlike the classic min-cut problem on graphs, the number of all rectilinear geometric minimal cuts is bounded by a low polynomial, O(n 3). Our algorithm for identifying geometric minimal cuts runs in O(n 3logn(loglogn)3) expected time which can be reduced to O(nlogn(loglogn)3) when the maximum size of the cut is bounded by a constant, where n=|V H |. Once geometric minimal cuts are identified we show that the problem can be reduced to computing the L Hausdorff Voronoi diagram of axis aligned rectangles. We present the first output-sensitive algorithm to compute this diagram which runs in O((N+K)log2 NloglogN) time and O(Nlog2 N) space, where N is the number of rectangles and K is the complexity of the Hausdorff Voronoi diagram. Our approach settles several open problems regarding the MGMC problem.  相似文献

We consider the following problem: Given an unsorted array of n elements, and a sequence of intervals in the array, compute the median in each of the subarrays defined by the intervals. We describe a simple algorithm which needs O(nlogk+klogn) time to answer k such median queries. This improves previous algorithms by a logarithmic factor and matches a comparison lower bound for k=O(n). The space complexity of our simple algorithm is O(nlogn) in the pointer machine model, and O(n) in the RAM model. In the latter model, a more involved O(n) space data structure can be constructed in O(nlogn) time where the time per query is reduced to O(logn/loglogn). We also give efficient dynamic variants of both data structures, achieving O(log2n) query time using O(nlogn) space in the comparison model and O((logn/loglogn)2) query time using O(nlogn/loglogn) space in the RAM model, and show that in the cell-probe model, any data structure which supports updates in O(logO(1)n) time must have Ω(logn/loglogn) query time.Our approach naturally generalizes to higher-dimensional range median problems, where element positions and query ranges are multidimensional—it reduces a range median query to a logarithmic number of range counting queries.  相似文献

In this paper, we solve the maximum agreement subtree problem for a set T of k rooted leaf-labeled evolutionary trees on n leaves where T contains a binary tree. We show that the O(kn3)-time dynamic-programming algorithm proposed by Bryant [Building trees, hunting for trees, and comparing trees: theory and methods in phylogenetic analysis, Ph.D. thesis, Dept. Math., University of Canterbury, 1997, pp. 174-182] can be implemented in O(kn2+n2logk−2nloglogn) and O(kn3−1/(k−1)) time by using multidimensional range search related data structures proposed by Gabow et al. [Scaling and related techniques for geometry problems, in: Proc. 16th Annual ACM Symp. on Theory of Computing, 1984, pp. 135-143] and Bentley [Multidimensional binary search trees in database applications, IEEE Trans. Softw. Eng. SE-5 (4) (1979) 333-340], respectively. When k<2+(logn−logloglogn)/(loglogn), the first implementation will be significantly faster than Bryant's algorithm. For k=3, it yields the best known algorithm which runs in O(n2lognloglogn)-time.  相似文献

The connected vertex cover problem is a variant of the vertex cover problem, in which a vertex cover is additional required to induce a connected subgraph in a given connected graph. The problem is known to be NP-hard and to be at least as hard to approximate as the vertex cover problem is. While several 2-approximation NC algorithms are known for vertex cover, whether unweighted or weighted, no parallel algorithm with guaranteed approximation is known for connected vertex cover. Moreover, converting the existing sequential 2-approximation algorithms for connected vertex cover to parallel ones results in RNC algorithms of rather high complexity at best.In this paper we present a 2-approximation NC (and RNC) algorithm for connected vertex cover (and tree cover). The NC algorithm runs in O(log2n) time using O(Δ2(m+n)/logn) processors on an EREW-PRAM, while the RNC algorithm runs in O(logn) expected time using O(m+n) processors on a CRCW-PRAM, when a given graph has n vertices and m edges with maximum vertex degree of Δ.  相似文献

We present an O(n 2logn)-time algorithm that finds a maximum matching in a regular graph with n vertices. More generally, the algorithm runs in O(rn 2logn) time if the difference between the maximum degree and the minimum degree is less than r. We present the first in-place algorithm for solving Klee's measure problem for a set of n axis-parallel rectangles in the plane. Our algorithm runs in O(n3/2logn) time and uses O(1) extra words in addition to the space needed for representing the input. The algorithm is surprisingly simple and thus very likely to yield an implementation that could be of practical interest. As a byproduct, we develop an optimal algorithm for solving Klee's measure problem for a set of n intervals; this algorithm runs in optimal time O(nlogn) and uses O(1) extra space.  相似文献

The first problem is to perform edge-coloring for an existing edge-colored graphGwith Δ + 1 colors stemming from the addition of a new vertex intoG. The proposed parallel algorithm for this problem runs inO3/2log3Δ + Δ logn) time usingO(max{nΔ, Δ3}) processors. The second problem is to color the edges of a given uncolored graphGwith Δ + 1 colors. For this problem, our first parallel algorithm requiresO5.5log3Δ logn+ Δ5log4n) time andO(max{n2Δ,nΔ3}) processors, which is a slight improvement on the algorithm by H. J. Karloff and D. B. Shmoys [J. Algorithms8 (1987), 39–52]. Their algorithm costsO6log4n) time andO(n2Δ) processors if we use the fastest known algorithm for finding maximal independent sets by M. Goldberg and T. Spencer [SIAM J. Discrete Math.2 (1989), 322–328]. Our second algorithm requiresO4.5log3Δ logn+ Δ4log4n) time andO(max{n2,nΔ3}) processors. Finally, we present our third algorithm by incorporating the second algorithm as a subroutine. This algorithm requiresO3.5log3Δ logn+ Δ3log4n) time andO(max{n2log Δ,nΔ3}) processors, which improves, by anO2.5) factor in time, on Karloff and Shmoys' algorithm. We prove that the rank-width of an n-vertex graph can be computed exactly in time O(n2n3log2nloglogn). To improve over a trivial O(n3logn)-time algorithm, we develop a general framework for decompositions on which an optimal decomposition can be computed efficiently. The most natural kinetic data structure for maintaining the maximum of a collection of continuously changing numbers is the kinetic heap. Basch, Guibas, and Ramkumar proved that the maximum number of events processed by a kinetic heap with n numbers changing as linear functions of time is O(nlog2n) and . We prove that this number is actually Θ(nlogn). In the kinetic heap, a linear number of events are stored in a priority queue, consequently, it takes O(logn) time to determine the next event at each iteration. We also present a modified version of the kinetic heap that processes O(nlogn/loglogn) events, with the same O(logn) time complexity to determine the next event.  相似文献

The primal-dual scheme has been used to provide approximation algorithms for many problems. Goemans and Williamson gave a (2−1/(n−1))-approximation for the Prize-Collecting Steiner Tree Problem that runs in O(n3logn) time—it applies the primal-dual scheme once for each of the n vertices of the graph. We present a primal-dual algorithm that runs in O(n2logn), as it applies this scheme only once, and achieves the slightly better ratio of (2−2/n). We present a randomized parallel algorithm that computes the greatest common divisor of two integers of n bits in length with probability 1−o(1) that takes O(nloglogn/logn) time using O(n6+?) processors for any ?>0 on the EREW PRAM parallel model of computation. In 1996, Fredman and Khachiyan [J. Algorithms 21 (1996) 618-628] presented a remarkable algorithm for the problem of checking the duality of a pair of monotone Boolean expressions in disjunctive normal form. Their algorithm runs in no(logn) time, thus giving evidence that the problem lies in an intermediate class between P and co-NP. In this paper we show that a modified version of their algorithm requires deterministic polynomial time plus O(log2n) nondeterministic guesses, thus placing the problem in the class co-NP[log2n]. We investigate the diameter problem in the streaming and sliding-window models. We show that, for a stream of nn points or a sliding window of size nn, any exact algorithm for diameter requires W(n)\Omega(n) bits of space. We present a simple e\epsilon-approximation algorithm for computing the diameter in the streaming model. Our main result is an e\epsilon-approximation algorithm that maintains the diameter in two dimensions in the sliding-window model using O((1/e3/2) log3n(logR+loglogn + log(1/e)))O(({1}/{\epsilon^{3/2}}) \log^{3}n(\log R+\log\log n + \log ({1}/{\epsilon}))) bits of space, where RR is the maximum, over all windows, of the ratio of the diameter to the minimum non-zero distance between any two points in the window.  相似文献

We present an algorithm for maintaining the biconnected components of a graph during a sequence of edge insertions and deletions. It requires linear storage and preprocessing time. The amortized running time for insertions and for deletions isO(m 2/3 ), wherem is the number of edges in the graph. Any query of the form ‘Are the verticesu andv biconnected?’ can be answered in timeO(1). This is the first sublinear algorithm for this problem. We can also output all articulation points separating any two vertices efficiently. If the input is a plane graph, the amortized running time for insertions and deletions drops toO(√n logn) and the query time isO(log2 n), wheren is the number of vertices in the graph.
