Agreement on titles and qualifications ... first reports!]

The significance of exercise-induced hypertensive blood pressure values is poorly known. The present study has looked for a correlation between hypertensive systolic blood pressure values on exercise in a normotensive population and later development of hypertension at rest. After elimination of patients with hypertension at rest and of patients lost to the follow-up, this study includes 74 normotensive subjects who had developed exertional hypertension (blood pressure superior to 220/95 mmHg) during exercise testing. At the end of an average follow-up of six years, 40.5% of these patients are showing hypertension at rest. Thus hypertensive blood pressure values on exercise in a normotensive subject is an important finding. It should lead to an adaptation of diet and life style and to regular blood pressure controls.     

Working within systems that don't ... or at least not the way I thought they would!

Each culture has its own systems, values, structures, and rules which differ from those of other cultures. To function effectively in any culture, one has to gain an appreciation of its values and rules, an understanding of how it is organized, and knowledge of the people who are in charge of its systems. This is true, also, of clinical work with people of different cultures. This article is a personal journal which describes one speech-pathologist's encounters with ethnic and governmental cultures, what she learned, and how she grew.

The author expresses his opinions concerning the relationship between research and teaching in psychology. Most psychologists spend a portion of their time in teaching. For many it is their most important activity in terms of the amount of time spent and the proportion of income received. Most psychologists think of themselves as scientists and spend a portion of time in planning and carrying out research. Many psychologists who are employed primarily as teachers elect to be in the laboratory during any time which can be spared from teaching. Almost all teaching psychologists, therefore, have two basic functions--one as a teacher and the other as a scientist. On the surface it may seem that the two roles are completely compatible but a more careful look reveals that there are inconsistencies between the behavior of the psychologist when he functions as a teacher and his behavior when he functions as a scientist. This editorial discusses the current issue of the International Journal of Play Therapy. In this issue, there are two special sections which feature research studies with an emphasis on play therapy strategies. The first special section focuses on the Color-Your-Life (CYL) technique--a play therapy tool developed by Kevin O'Connor. The other special section features the winner of the Association for Play Therapy's Student Research Award--a study of the effects of family play.
