High-speed CMOS switch designs for free-space optoelectronic MIN's

We present the theory, experimental results, and analytical modeling of high-speed complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) switches, with a two-dimensional (2-D) layout, suitable for the implementation of packet-switched free-space optoelectronic multistage interconnection networks (MIN's). These switches are fully connected, bidirectional, and scaleable. The design is based on the implementation of a half-switch, which is a two-to-one multiplexer, using a 2-D layout. It introduces a novel self-routing concept, with contention detection and packet drop-and-resend capabilities. It uses three-valued logic, with 2.5 V being the third value for a 5 V power supply. Simulations show that for a 0.8-μm CMOS technology the switches can operate at speeds up to 250 Mb/s. Scaled-down versions of the switches have been successfully implemented in 2.0 μm CMOS. The analytical modeling of these switches show that large scale free-space optoelectronic MIN's using this concept could offer close to Terabit/sec throughput capabilities for very reasonable power and area figures. For example, a 4096 channel system could offer 256 Gb/s aggregate throughput for a total silicon area of about 18 cm² and a total power consumption (optics plus electronics) of about 90 W

A single-chip tuner for DVB-T

A new architecture is presented for a single-chip tuner for digital terrestrial television, based on existing double conversion and direct conversion topologies. The new design forms part of a mixed-signal Digital Video Broadcasting-Terrestrial (DVB-T) receiver system, employing digital signal processing at baseband to ensure minimal performance requirements for the analog circuitry. To evaluate the potential performance of this new tuner/receiver system, high-level system simulations have been performed, followed by the construction of a prototype DVB-T receiver using a custom-designed analog ASIC which integrates all analog tuner blocks (including channel filtering) on one chip. Measured results from this chip, implemented in a 20-GHz bipolar technology, show an overall third-order input referred intercept point of 116 dB/spl mu/V, a noise figure of 14 dB and an automatic gain control range of 71.4 dB, drawing 250 mA at a 5-V supply.

Using combinatorial designs to construct partial concentrators

Partial concentrators have been shown to be useful in the construction of various types of interconnecting networks. It is shown how a large class of combinatorial designs, which are well studied in the literature, can be used to construct partial concentrators and thus provide a direct link between the fields of combinatorial designs and switching networks. A construction efficiency factor called the cost ratio is introduced, and some lower bounds on the capacity of partial concentrators having certain characteristics are established. It is shown how to use various combinatorial designs to construct partial concentrators having these same characteristics and corresponding capacities
