Underground space needs an interdisciplinary approach

During a very long period of time, civil engineers have been the only ones to be designated as the experts for underground space, while the planners and architects were the ones of the development at the surface. This silo approach to work is now a thing for the past in most major cities, but solving this fragmentation of the disciplines does not happen overnight. It first took a few thinkers to promote and publish on the subject, such as Edouard Utudjian, founder of GECUS in 1937, and also that planners abandon their ambiguous position on this invisible space, become part of multi-disciplinary teams and participate in the dissemination of new knowledge, particularly through some international associations such as ACUUS. With biennial scientific conferences dating back to 1983, the organization actively promotes since partnerships amongst all actors in the field of planning, management, research and uses of urban underground space in all its forms. The originality of ACUUS comes from its success in attracting public, private and university levels into a cohesive network of mutual cooperation, which is not so common in international organizations.

Does Collaboration Work?

Bringing together a number of design celebrities, among them Greg Lynn, UN Studio, Foreign Office Architects (FOA) and Kevin Kennon Architect, United Architects (UA) was established to create a collaborative proposal for the 2003 competition for a new World Trade Center. Invoking the name as well as the intentions of what started as a similar collaborative formation by established actors and film-makers in the 1940s (United Artists) to challenge mainstream corporate power, UA attempted to offer more visionary alternatives to the expectations of typical mainstream architectural solutions. Kevin Kennon here presents an insider's perspective on the UA collaboration and employs his unique history, including his former partnership at Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF) to raise important questions about collective design in terms of authorship, identity and practice. 台湾交通大学光复校区的机车棚一案中,潘冀建筑师除了将解决实际停车问题视为设计目标,更将基地条件的限制、营造经费的不足、分期建造的需求与传统不被赋予空间品质的停车场建筑类型等条件,转化为设计的潜力,化劣势为机会,创造出融合基地、结构创新、造型清楚、建筑语汇简洁,穿透性、空间感兼具,又有充足自然通风与采光的建筑物。本案说明了设计案没有分规模大或小、建筑类型不应分重要或不重要。差异其实只在于建筑师的专业度与敬业态度。     

从大邑刘氏庄园看外来文化对中国建筑的影响

通过对大邑刘氏庄园这座乡土建筑的调查和研究仔细分析其带有的外来文化影响的痕迹,并回顾中外文化交流的历史背景,特别是与刘氏庄园有关的历史,指出外来文化从传入到推动中国建筑发展分为三个阶段,目前在中国是多阶段共存。而认为中国建筑要发展就必须解决对外来文化“消化不良”的现象,化被动为主动,寻找中国的建筑发展之路。

Making Place in Bangalore

Lithuania: assembling in cities

Blurring Boundaries,Defining Places: The New Hybrid Spaces of Eating

Customised ‘Care-Ready’ Living: A HAPPI-Inspired Design for Evolutionary Housing by Walter Menteth Wren Architects

In 2013, Walter Menteth Architects entered the 2013 Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Re-imagine Ageing Design Competition with an entry that focused on the delivery of customised housing to suit individual specifications. Here Walter Menteth , a director of the practice, describes the research the office undertook as part of the project and how it led to a solution that radically questioned the current procurement process for development-led retirement housing by proposing a new, distinctively ‘branded’ delivery vehicle that improves access to consumers while expanding buyer choice and engagement.     

Redesigning Domesticity: Creating Homes for the Elderly

Sally Stewart , Deputy Head of the Mackintosh School of Architecture at the Glasgow School of Art, highlights how nurturing a sense of ‘home’ can be a key ingredient in the creation of successful accommodation for the elderly and those with dementia. What, however, sets a ‘home’ apart from mere housing provision, and how can architects engender it? Stewart looks at some recent projects in the UK, Japan and the Netherlands in search of the answer.

Modernising the Morgan Library

Renzo Piano's recent addition to the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York is of interest in its own right because it radically alters the experience at one of the city's most appealing and unique institutions. But it is also worth considering, Jayne Merkel argues, because Piano is now working on more major museums than any architect in the world. At the Morgan, he subtly transformed a magnificent Renaissance Revival private library into a full-fledged modern museum with fine facilities for displaying parts of the collection and making its resources available to scholars. The old parts look as magnificent as ever, though they are now somewhat side-lined. The new parts are strong and elegant. The two are daringly juxtaposed, and the planning for 14,028 square metres (151,000 square feet) of facilities that more than doubles the size of the whole on part of a cramped Manhattan block is skilful. Top of the rock observatory

Smack dab in the middle of the famous cluster of Manhattan towers, a new tri-level, indoor-outdoor observation deck on top of the tallest building in Rockefeller Center (the ge Building) brings visitors close to the surrounding pinnacles with overviews of the New York archipelago. One surprise, as Jayne Merkel explains, is that this sensational tourist site, with a glittery, spiralling, three-storey entrance, was designed by Michael Gabellini, the New York architect known for pristine boutiques in elegant old buildings, such as the Jil Sander store in the former Royal Bank of Scotland on London's Saville Row.
