The Green500 List: Encouraging Sustainable Supercomputing

The performance-at-any-cost design mentality ignores supercomputers' excessive power consumption and need for heat dissipation and will ultimately limit their performance. Without fundamental change in the design of supercomputing systems, the performance advances common over the past two decades won't continue. The HPC community needs a Green500 List to rank supercomputers on speed and power requirements and to supplement the TOP500 List. Vendors and system architects worldwide take substantial pride and invest tremendous effort toward making the biannual TOP500 List. We anticipate that the Green500 List effort will do the same and encourage the HPC community and operators of Internet data centers to design more power-efficient supercomputers and large-scale data centers.

Supercomputing with transputers

An overview of large-scale applications of transputers is presented in the context of the Edinburgh Concurrent Supercomputing Project. This is built around a Meiko Computing Surface, with presently some 400 floating-point transputers and 1.7 Gbytes of memory. The first part of the paper gives an overview of the Project's origins and status and describes experience gained in providing a multi-user service. The second part gives examples of applications which are able to exploit effectively this processing power. Tools which facilitate the use of the machine for large-scale computation and visualisation are also briefly described.

超级计算环境容错机制

中国科学院超级计算环境是整合了包括总中心、分中心和所级中心计算资源的3层架构超级计算环境.为提升超级计算环境的可靠性,提供稳定、可靠的计算服务,其容错机制的研究成为超级计算环境的一个研究重点.在对容错基本思想及各类计算机容错技术进行充分调研的基础上,提出一种适用于超级计算环境的容错框架,依据该框架给出了不同层次的容错方案,并对不同层次的容错开销进行了分析和比较,验证了不同层次容错方案对应用程序所带来的影响.     

网络并行超级计算系统THNPSC—1

网络并行计算（也称集群式计算）是实现高性能计算的重要方式,该文介绍了一个清华大学研制的网络并行超级计算系统THNPSC－1,它是由Pentium Ⅲ SMP计算结点组成;网络互联采用两种高速网：一种是自制的具有动态仲裁与路由寻经的交叉开关网络THNet,另一种是100Mpbs的Ethernet.THNet中的交叉开关THSwitch是用15万门的ALTERA FPGA芯片构成,THNet还包括具有DMA引擎的网络适配器THNIA.THNet每一端口可以提供数据传输率为1．056Gbps,其聚合频宽可达8．4Gbps;采用固定用户缓冲和扩展的主动消息传递等法,THNet执行用户层的消息传递,旁路操作系统的系统调用,做到零拷贝的消息传递,乒乓测试结果表明：单向消息传递延迟可减少到8μs。THNetl软件包括THNIA驱动程序和支持用户层通信的函数库。此文对相关工作进行了简要对比,并说明了该系统的应用情况。     

Data Protection Comes of Age: The Data Protection Clauses in the European Constitutional Treaty

This article traces the evolution of the right to data protection in European law, with a particular focus on the inclusion of the right in the European Union Charter of Fundamental Rights and its proposed legal status under the new Constitutional Treaty. In particular, the discussion considers the legal impact of this 'constitutionalisation' of this area of legal protection. It is argued that this should be viewed as more than just a formal development in that entrenchment of the right may strengthen ground-level interpretation and implementation of data protection principles.     

Multiway tele-immersion at Supercomputing 97

Tele-immersion-the union of networked virtual reality (VR) and video to support collaboration among scientists, engineers, and educators-is an important element in the computing information infrastructure envisioned by the National Computational Science Alliance. Tele-immersion will let people from around the world casually enter a shared virtual environment (VE), manipulate that environment-whether a scientific simulation or a design space-and engage in discourse with their collaborators. The Alliance consists of more than 50 universities and government institutions led by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. Supercomputing 97 provided an excellent opportunity to connect several of the Alliance partners together and experiment with the kind of shared interaction my colleagues and I will be focusing on in the next few years. Rather than show a tele-immersion demo at Supercomputing, we wanted to use the conference as an opportunity to do research on the show floor
