A Service Level Agreement Language for Dynamic Electronic Services   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
This paper proposes a novel language for Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for dynamic and spontaneous electronic services. In a cross-organizational setting, it is important for customers of a service to obtain, monitor and enforce quality of service (QoS) guarantees by service providers, usually expressed in the form of SLAs. Since the supervision and management of SLAs and the provisioning of corresponding systems should be automated for economic reasons, we need a formal language to define an SLA. If, moreover, providers and customers want to sign custom-made SLAs, the SLA language, correspondingly, must provide a large degree of flexibility.The SLA language described in this paper aims at providing the needed flexibility by means of an XML-based representation and a runtime system for SLAs. Using this language, parties to an SLA can describe how parameters are measured and computed from raw metrics, the guarantees they want with respect to those parameters and the involvement of third parties to, e.g., independently verify SLA compliance.  相似文献

In today's competitive world, service providers need to be customer-focused and proactive in their marketing strategies to create consumer awareness of their services. Cloud computing provides an open and ubiquitous computing feature in which a large random number of consumers can interact with providers and request services. In such an environment, there is a need for intelligent and efficient methods that increase confidence in the successful achievement of business requirements. One such method is the Service Level Agreement (SLA), which is comprised of service objectives, business terms, service relations, obligations and the possible action to be taken in the case of SLA violation. Most of the emphasis in the literature has, until now, been on the formation of meaningful SLAs by service consumers, through which their requirements will be met. However, in an increasingly competitive market based on the cloud environment, service providers too need a framework that will form a viable SLA, predict possible SLA violations before they occur, and generate early warning alarms that flag a potential lack of resources. This is because when a provider and a consumer commit to an SLA, the service provider is bound to reserve the agreed amount of resources for the entire period of that agreement – whether the consumer uses them or not. It is therefore very important for cloud providers to accurately predict the likely resource usage for a particular consumer and to formulate an appropriate SLA before finalizing an agreement. This problem is more important for a small to medium cloud service provider which has limited resources that must be utilized in the best possible way to generate maximum revenue. A viable SLA in cloud computing is one that intelligently helps the service provider to determine the amount of resources to offer to a requesting consumer, and there are number of studies on SLA management in the literature. The aim of this paper is two-fold. First, it presents a comprehensive overview of existing state-of-the-art SLA management approaches in cloud computing, and their features and shortcomings in creating viable SLAs from the service provider's viewpoint. From a thorough analysis, we observe that the lack of a viable SLA management framework renders a service provider unable to make wise decisions in forming an SLA, which could lead to service violations and violation penalties. To fill this gap, our second contribution is the proposal of the Optimized Personalized Viable SLA (OPV-SLA) framework which assists a service provider to form a viable SLA and start managing SLA violation before an SLA is formed and executed. The framework also assists a service provider to make an optimal decision in service formation and allocate the appropriate amount of marginal resources. We demonstrate the applicability of our framework in forming viable SLAs through experiments. From the evaluative results, we observe that our framework helps a service provider to form viable SLAs and later to manage them to effectively minimize possible service violation and penalties.  相似文献

Engineering asset management (EAM) is a broad discipline with distributed functions and services. When engineering assets are capital intensive, management requires specialized expertise for diagnosis, prognosis, maintenance and repairs. The current practice of EAM relies on self maintained experiential rules with coordinated collaboration and outsourcing for maintenance and repairs. In order to enhance the life long asset value and efficiency (from the stakeholder’s viewpoint) and after sales service quality (from the asset provider’s viewpoint), this research proposes a collaborative maintenance platform that integrates real time data collection with diagnostic and prognostic expertise. The collaborative system combines and delivers services among asset operation sites (the maintenance demanders), the service center (the intermediary coordinator), the system providers, the first tier maintenance collaborators, and the second and lower tier parts suppliers. Multi-agent system technology is used to integrate different systems and databases. Agents with autonomy and authority work to assist service providers and coordinate communications, negotiations, and maintenance decision support. Finally, game theory is used to design the decision models for strategic, tactical, and operational decision making during collaborative maintenance practices.  相似文献

Service level agreements (SLAs) are facilitators for widening the commercial uptake of Grid technology. They provide explicit statements of expectation and obligation between service consumers and providers. However, without the ability to assess the probability that an SLA might fail, commercial uptake will be restricted, since neither party will be willing to agree. Therefore, risk assessment mechanisms are critical to increase confidence in Grid technology usage within the commercial sector. This paper presents an SLA brokering mechanism with risk assessment support, which evaluates the probability of SLA failure. WS‐Agreement and risk metrics are used to facilitate SLA creation between service consumers and providers within a typical Grid resource usage scenario. An evaluation is conducted to examine risk models, the performance of the broker's implementation as well as a comparison of its capabilities against similar SLA‐based solutions from the literature. Currently many service providers offer their services on a private and proprietary hard- and software infrastructure. These infrastructures often share many similarities. Hence we believe a generic service management architecture, that allows service providers to offer a large array of different services on a single infrastructure or multiple providers to offer their services cooperatively, would provide many advantages over current silo-based approaches. Additionally, by allowing the distributed service management components to cooperate in a peer-to-peer overlay network, scalability and resilience of the system could be greatly improved.In this paper we propose an optimal algorithm, based on an integer linear programming (ILP) formulation, and several heuristics to support such a generic overlay-based service management architecture. More specifically, we propose algorithms for dynamically allocating server and network resources to a set of services and selecting a suitable service instance for each client. Service instances are placed on a set of servers, taking into account server resource constraints (e.g. CPU and memory). Unlike existing algorithms for this problem, those proposed in this paper also support service level agreements (SLAs), which take the form of Quality of Service demands such as transmission latency constraints and bandwidth requirements. The optimisation goal is to maximise the percentage of satisfied demand (answered requests) and minimise the total number of required overlay servers, while satisfying the SLAs and resource constraints. Additionally, we propose an extension that allows the algorithms to find overlay routing paths to improve the transmission latency for latency-sensitive services.Extensive simulations were performed to evaluate the performance and scalability of the heuristics. They showed that in many cases the heuristics perform close to optimal and they scale well in terms of network size.  相似文献

The number of cloud service users has increased worldwide, and cloud service providers have been deploying and operating data centers to serve the globally distributed cloud users. The resource capacity of a data center is limited, so distributing the load to global data centers will be effective in providing stable services. Another issue in cloud computing is the need for providers to guarantee the service level agreements (SLAs) established with consumers. Whereas various load balancing algorithms have been developed, it is necessary to avoid SLA violations (e.g., service response time) when a cloud provider allocates the load to data centers geographically distributed across the world. Considering load balancing and guaranteed SLA, therefore, this paper proposes an SLA-based cloud computing framework to facilitate resource allocation that takes into account the workload and geographical location of distributed data centers. The contributions of this paper include: (1) the design of a cloud computing framework that includes an automated SLA negotiation mechanism and a workload- and location-aware resource allocation scheme (WLARA), and (2) the implementation of an agent-based cloud testbed of the proposed framework. Using the testbed, experiments were conducted to compare the proposed schemes with related approaches. Empirical results show that the proposed WLARA performs better than other related approaches (e.g., round robin, greedy, and manual allocation) in terms of SLA violations and the provider’s profits. We also show that using the automated SLA negotiation mechanism supports providers in earning higher profits.  相似文献

Web services as a technology to enable distributed business processes gain in importance. However, the support of Quality of Service (QoS) is crucial in this context. Thus, we present an integrated web service architecture with comprehensive QoS support. The architecture we introduce in this paper supports the assessment of web services to assure that only web services will be used in critical business processes that satisfy the requirements defined by the user. The selection and execution of a certain web service depends on its QoS-properties that must be guaranteed in Service Level Agreements (SLAs). The compliance with SLAs is monitored by the system as well. Furthermore we introduce a prototypical implementation of our web service architecture.  相似文献

Flat-rate pricing appeals to Internet users and service providers because of its simplicity and predictability. However, congestion is the inevitable consequence of flat-rate pricing because Internet users who pay a fixed access fee have no incentive to limit their network usage. Future applications that require timely delivery of data will require mechanisms for allocating network resources that give consumers choices in services and prices while allowing service providers to recover their costs. We examine the proposed improvements in Internet pricing that are designed to increase its economic efficiency and support the deployment of new applications that require a better quality of service than the Internet currently offers  相似文献

IT service providers are increasingly hosting different services of different customers on a shared IT infrastructure. While this fosters utilization of hardware infrastructure, system malfunctions, unexpected service behaviour or peak demands for one or more services may exploit resource pools (CPU, I/O, main memory, bandwidth etc.), entailing rejection of service requests. In this paper we describe models for dynamic admission control on shared infrastructures. The admission control model decides whether to accept, buffer or reject a service request based on the revenue, Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and its resource demand in comparison to the actual workload to maximize overall revenue. Simulations of a media streaming infrastructure have been used for evaluation and comparison with traditional admission control policies.  相似文献

Successful massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs) have today millions of registered users and hundreds of thousands of active concurrent players. To be able to guarantee quality of service (QoS) to a highly variable number of concurrent users, game operators statically over-provision a large infrastructure capable of sustaining the game peak load, even though a large portion of the resources is unused most of the time. To address this problem, we introduce in this work a new MMOG ecosystem for hosting and provisioning of MMOGs which effectively splits the traditional monolithic MMOG companies into three main service providers: game providers, game operators, and resource providers. Their interaction is regulated through comprehensive service level agreements (SLA) that establish the price, terms of operation, and compensation for service violations. In our model, game operators efficiently provision resources for MMOGs from multiple cloud providers, based on dynamic load forecasts, and ensure proper game operation that maintains the required QoS to all clients under varying resource availability. Game providers manage multiple distributed MMOGs for which they lease services under strict operational SLAs from game operators to satisfy all client requests. These three self-standing, smaller, more agile service providers enable access to the MMOG market for the small and medium enterprises, and to the current commercial cloud providers. We evaluate, through simulations based on real-life MMOG traces and commercial cloud SLAs, the impact of resource availability on the QoS offered to the MMOG clients. We find that our model can mitigate the negative effects of resource failures within four minutes and that MMOG server consolidation can accentuate the negative effects of failures in a resource-scarce environment. We further investigate different methods of ranking MMOG operational offers with either single or multiple (competing) MMOG providers. Our results show that compensations for SLA faults in the offer selection process can lead up to 11–16 % gain in the game providers’ income. We also demonstrate that adequate ranking of offers can lead to MMOG operational cost reductions from 20 up to 60 %.  相似文献

An Internet application can invoke several services--a stock-trading Web service, for example, could invoke a payment service, which could then invoke an authentication service. Such a scenario is called a composite Web service, and it can be specified statically or established dynamically. Dynamic composition of Web services requires service consumers to discover service providers that satisfy given functional and nonfunctional requirements including cost and QoS requirements such as performance and availability. In previous columns, I've examined how quality of service (QoS) comes into play for service providers, consumers, and parallel transactions. Increasingly, Internet services are being deployed over an infrastructure that spans multiple control domains. These services require cooperation between multiple organizations, systems and entities. Currently, few standard mechanisms exist to share selective management information between the various service providers or between service providers and their customers. Such mechanisms are necessary for end-to-end service management and diagnosis as well as for ensuring the service level obligations between a service provider and its customers or partners. This paper describes an architecture that uses contracts based on service level agreements (SLAs) to share selective management information across administrative boundaries. Grid computing is already a mainstream paradigm for resource-intensive scientific applications, but it also promises to become the future model for enterprise applications. The grid enables resource sharing and dynamic allocation of computational resources, thus increasing access to distributed data, promoting operational flexibility and collaboration, and allowing service providers to scale efficiently to meet variable demands. Large-scale grids are complex systems composed of thousands of components from disjoined domains. Planning the capacity to guarantee quality of service (QoS) in such environments is a challenge because global service-level agreements (SLAs) depend on local SLAs. We provide a motivating example for grid computing in an enterprise environment and then discuss the how resource allocation affects SLAs.  相似文献

We describe a novel framework for specifying and monitoring Service Level Agreements (SLA) for Web Services. SLA monitoring and enforcement become increasingly important in a Web Service environment where enterprise applications and services rely on services that may be subscribed dynamically and on-demand. For economic and practical reasons, we want an automated provisioning process for both the service itself as well as the SLA managment system that measures and monitors the QoS parameters, checks the agreed-upon service levels, and reports violations to the authorized parties involved in the SLA management process. Our approach to these issues is presented in this paper. The Web Service Level Agreement (WSLA) framework is targeted at defining and monitoring SLAs for Web Services. Although WSLA has been designed for a Web Services environment, it is applicable as well to any inter-domain management scenario, such as business process and service management, or the management of networks, systems and applications in general. The WSLA framework consists of a flexible and extensible language based on XML Schema and a runtime architecture comprising several SLA monitoring services, which may be outsourced to third parties to ensure a maximum of objectivity. WSLA enables service customers and providers to unambiguously define a wide variety of SLAs, specify the SLA parameters and the way they are measured, and relate them to managed resource instrumentations. Upon receipt of an SLA specification, the WSLA monitoring services are automatically configured to enforce the SLA. An implementation of the WSLA framework, termed SLA Compliance Monitor, is publicly available as part of the IBM Web Services Toolkit.  相似文献

IT-based Service Economy requires Service Markets to flourish for the trade of services. A market does not represent a simple buyer-seller relationship, rather it is the culmination point of a complex chain of stake-holders with a hierarchical integration of value along each point in the chain. To enable a Service Economy, Service Markets must be practically realized, which in turn requires an enabling infrastructure to support service value chains and service choreographies resulting from service composition scenarios. In such scenarios, services compose together hierarchically in a producer-consumer manner to form service supply-chains of added value. Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are defined at various levels in this hierarchy to ensure the expected quality of service for different stakeholders. Automation of service composition directly implies the aggregation of their corresponding SLAs.In this paper we elaborate on the requirements of hierarchical aggregation of SLAs corresponding to service choreographies leading to business models such as Business Value Networks. During the hierarchical aggregation of SLAs, certain SLA information pertaining to different stakeholders is meant to be restricted and can be only partially revealed to a subset of their business partners. We introduce the concept of SLA-Views to protect such privacy concerns. We then formalize the notion of SLA Choreography and define an aggregation model based on SLA-Views to enable the automation of hierarchical aggregation of Service Level Agreements. Maintaining long-term customer loyalty has been an important issue in the service industry. Although customer satisfaction can be enhanced with better service quality, delivering appropriate services to customers poses challenges to service providers, particularly in real-time and resource-limited dynamic service contexts. However, customer expectation management has been regarded as an effective way for helping service providers achieve high customer satisfaction in the real world that is nevertheless less real-time and dynamic. This study designs a FCM-based customer expectation-driven service dispatch system to empower providers with the capability to deal effectively with the problem of delivering right services to right customers in right contexts. Our evaluation results show that service providers can make appropriate decisions on service dispatch for customers by effectively managing customer expectations and arranging their contextual limited resources and time via the proposed service dispatch system. Meanwhile, customers can receive suitable service and obtain high satisfaction when appropriate services are provided. Accordingly, a high-performance ecosystem can be established by both service providers and customers who co-create value in the dynamic service contexts.  相似文献

The differentiated services architecture (Diffserv) enables service providers to offer tighter, more comprehensive service-level agreements (SLAs) for IP service performance. One way it does this is by letting designers engineer IP backbone networks to assure that SLA parameters are met on a per-class basis. This review covers best practices for designing, validating, deploying, and operating Diffserv in the network backbone. It also presents new results from router-based testing that demonstrate how, with Diffserv, high-performance backbone routers can achieve tight SLA capabilities.  相似文献

Automated Service Level Agreements (SLAs) have been proposed for cloud services as contracts used to record the rights and obligations of service providers and their customers. Automation refers to the electronic formalized representation of SLAs and the management of their lifecycle by autonomous agents. Most recently, SLA automated management is becoming increasingly of importance. In previous work, we have elaborated a utility architecture that optimizes resource deployment according to business policies, as well as a mechanism for optimization in SLA negotiation. We take all that a step further with the application of actor systems as an appropriate theoretical model for fine-grained, yet simplified and practical, monitoring of massive sets of SLAs. We show that this is a realistic approach for the automated management of the complete SLA lifecycle, including negotiation and provisioning, but focus on monitoring as the driver of contemporary scalability requirements. Our proposed work separates the agreement’s fault-tolerance concerns and strategies into multiple autonomous layers that can be hierarchically combined into an intuitive, parallelized, effective and efficient management structure.  相似文献

There exist many web services which exhibit similar functional characteristics. It is imperative to provide service consumers with facilities for selecting required web services according to their non-functional characteristics or quality of service (QoS). However, the selection process is greatly complicated by the distinct views of service providers and consumers on the services QoS. For instance, they may have distinct views of the service reliability—wherein a consumer considers that a service is reliable if its success rate is higher than 99%, while a provider may consider its service as reliable if its success rate is higher than 90%. The aim of this paper is to resolve such conflicts and to ensure consensus on the QoS characteristics in the selection of web services. It proposes a QoS Consensus Moderation Approach (QCMA) in order to perform QoS consensus and to alleviate the differences on QoS characteristics in the selection of web services. The proposed approach is implemented as a prototype tool and is tested on a case study of a hotel booking web service. Experimental results show that the proposed approach greatly improves the service selection process in a dynamic and uncertain environment of web services.  相似文献
