The objective of this study is to summarize the load and resistance criteria for highway bridge plank decks, and to estimate the reliability of plank decks designed by the AASHTO Code. Both transverse and longitudinal planks for a variety of typical stringer spacings and plank sizes are considered. Truck traffic load data are based on the model used to calibrate the 1994 AASHTO LRFD Code. However, for plank decks, wheel load rather than whole vehicle weight is most important, and these statistics are developed for this study. For wood planks, dead load and dynamic load are not significant. The limit state considered is flexural strength, and resistance statistics are presented for wood planks in terms of modulus of rupture. Special flat-wise use data are presented to account for section aspect ratio as well as edge of load application. The reliability analysis is carried out using the procedure developed for calibration of AASHTO LRFD. Reliability indices for both the AASHTO Standard and AASHTO LRFD Code are presented for plank decks. The results indicate that there are considerable differences in plank reliability indices. Causes of inconsistencies in safety are identified.  相似文献

Much of the reported research on the dynamic analysis of pile foundations assumes linear behavior of soil that may not be valid for strong excitations. In this paper, material nonlinearity of the soil caused by plasticity and work hardening is considered in the dynamic analysis of pile foundations. An advanced plasticity based soil model, HiSS, is incorporated in a finite element technique. To simulate radiation effects, proper boundary conditions are used. The model and algorithm are verified with analytical results that are available for elastic and elastoplastic soil models. Analyses are carried out for free-field response and pile head response of end-bearing single piles. Both harmonic and transient excitations are considered in the analyses. Effects of frequency of excitation and stiffness of soil are investigated. It was found that the nonlinearity of soil has significant effects on the pile response for lower and moderate frequencies of excitations (a0<0.6) while at higher frequencies its effects are not as significant.  相似文献

The results from short-term tests for genetic and related effects, abstracted from the open literature for 36 anticancer drugs, are examined in this review. Data for 27 of these agents are available in the EPA/IARC Genetic Activity Profile (GAP) database. Data summaries, including data listings and activity profiles, are presented for nine anticancer drugs added to the GAP database for this analysis. Genetic toxicity data from the recent literature are included for the additional agents to provide a broader representation of the categories of drugs being evaluated. These categories, based on the chemical mode of action, are covalent and noncovalent DNA-binding drugs, topoisomerase II inhibitors, antimetabolites, mitotic spindle inhibitors, and drugs which affect endocrine function. The qualitative data for all 36 drugs are summarized in this report and findings are presented from pair-wise matching of genetic activity profiles, based on test results in common, for some chemical analogs. The significance of germ cell test results for some of these drugs and their implication in assessing risk of heritable genetic disease are discussed.  相似文献

Draws a distinction between attribution of responsibility for a problem and attribution of responsibility for a solution. Four general helping models are derived. In the "moral" model, actors are held responsible for both problems and solutions and are believed to need only proper motivation. In the compensatory model, people are responsible only for solutions and are believed to need power. Individuals in the medical model are responsible for neither problems nor solutions and are thought to need treatment. In the enlightenment model, actors are responsible for problems but are unable or unwilling to provide solutions; they need discipline. It is maintained that each set of assumptions has characteristic consequences for the competence, status, and well-being of actors and that the wrong choice of model in a situation will undermine effective helping and coping. Competing models of responsibility in education, psychotherapy, law, and welfare are described, and research on attribution of responsibility is recommended as a way of addressing problems of both theoretical and social significance. Assessment of Time of Concentration Formulas for Overland Flow   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Despite the importance of overland time of concentration on the design discharge, engineers are often bewildered by the array of formulas available in the literature without knowing the accuracy of each formula. This assessment covers nine formulas published between 1946 and 1993, which are intended for overland flow only that is subjected to uniform rain. The assessment compares the estimates from the formulas with experimental values that are derived under the same conditions for two surfaces: concrete and grass. The assessment shows that formulas that do not account for the rainfall intensity are only valid for a limited range of rainfall intensities. The formulas that account for the rainfall intensity generally show better agreement with the experimental data. Finally, the assessment gives two rankings of the formulas for the two surfaces in accordance to their accuracy as compared to the experimental data. The formula that has the best accuracy for both surfaces is the Chen and Wong formula.  相似文献

This paper evaluates the benefits of computing deflection with an equivalent moment of inertia based on integration of curvature to account for changes in member stiffness along the span. Results are evaluated for steel and fiber-reinforced polymer reinforced (FRP-reinforced) concrete flexural members with different loading arrangements and support conditions. Closed-form solutions of integrated expressions for deflection are expressed in terms of an equivalent moment of inertia Ie′ and compared to deflection computed with an effective moment of inertia Ie based on the stiffness at the critical section. Results from this comparison are validated with measured deflections from an experimental database for FRP-reinforced concrete. Current code-related approaches are also compared to the experimental database. It is shown herein that the use of an integration-based expression for the moment of inertia can lead to improved prediction of deflection, though the use of an effective moment of inertia based on member stiffness at the critical section gives a reasonably conservative estimate of deflection in many cases. The benefits of taking account of changes in stiffness along the member span are more evident when low reinforcing ratios are used in combination with FRP reinforcement, and use of the integration-based expression Ie′ may be warranted when deflection control is critical in such cases.  相似文献
