The two initiatives presented-the Hanna Nassif Community-Based Upgrading which adopted an innovative approach in both its institutional setup and the use of labour-intensive community contracting and community management, and the solid waste management initiative involving private and community-based collection methods, both of which build capacity within the community for the improvement of infrastructure as a means of reducing poverty, illustrate some of the achievements and imoacts realized and lessons learnt.
