Introduces this issue of the Canadian Journal of Experimental Psychology as focusing on musical cognition and performance. There are a series of articles reporting on explorations of various aspects of the cognitive processing of music. Other articles focus on different aspects of the perceptual and cognitive processing of music. Also represented in this special issue is work looking at the emotional aspect of musical behaviour. Finally, this special issue contains two series of experiments related to musical performance, each, interestingly enough, with a developmental slant. Overall, the articles in this special issue provide insight into how it is that people perceive and produce complex auditory information, and are suggestive about what research in musical cognition can say about psychological processing in general. The five articles that make up the bulk of this special issue collectively illustrate new methods for examining the utility of sub-test and scale-level profile analysis. By necessity they are preliminary, but they illustrate methods that may indeed prove useful and may help resolve this divide between research and practice. This special issue grew out of a symposium conceived and organized by Cecil Reynolds at the American Psychological Association in 1998. The articles and one of the commentaries in this special issue are extensions of that symposium. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

This special issue of the Canadian Journal of Experimental Psychology is titled "Implicit Memory Research in 1996." Implicit memory now occupies centre stage in the study of memory, and as such, the editor of the journal saw the need for a special issue. In this special issue, several articles investigate priming on perceptually-cued tests and contribute to our understanding of the nature of implicit retrieval on perceptually-cued tests. The study of priming has been dominated by the use of verbal tasks, like the tasks used in the previous articles. However, priming can be revealed in many ways, and it is important that researchers explore the nature of priming in a variety of experimental situations so as to broaden our knowledge and understanding of implicit memory. Several articles in this special issue do this. Each article stands on it own and makes a novel and important contribution. At the same time, the articles share similarities which also helped to determine the order of presentation of the articles in the issue. With this special issue, CJBS joins several journals in focussing on environmental problems and their relation to human behaviours. The six research papers by Canadian researchers in this issue are grouped into three areas: environmentally responsible behaviours, managed resource use, and community problems. An invited essay by the Minister of Environment, the Honourable Sergio Marchi, P.C, M.P., concludes this issue with a call for psychological research targeted to the needs of policymakers and legislators. This introduction sets these articles in the context of environmental psychology research, defined as a perspective on psychological research in which the focus is on transactions between people and their physical surroundings. A special section of this issue of the Journal examines theoretically where we are in the area of working alliance and what is needed to advance understanding in this area. Six articles have been prepared by some of the very best minds in the field of psychotherapy in the area of working alliance. I am sure you will find these pieces to be thoughtful and far reaching and, just as important, they should provide energy and direction for research and thought on working alliance in the years ahead. The six papers are followed by a summary and integration by Dr. Samstag, in which she points out common themes and points of divergence among the six papers. From these, she develops some of her own thoughts about where we should be heading. As implied, our hope in creating this special section was that it would stimulate better theory, research, and clinical practice related to the working alliance. In the context of professional psychology, peer review refers to an organized system of assessing quality of services and requires analysis and judgment of professional practice by other practitioners within the profession. This special issue on peer review and quality assurance represents a report on the status of developments in quality assurance within the mental health professions and emphasizes the major role of groups within the American Psychological Association (APA). The first set of articles discusses general issues in quality assessment. The next set of articles is specifically relevant to the progress and development of the Defense Department's Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services (CHAMPUS) Project. The third section comprises a series of articles that describe the application of quality assurance methodology to a variety of service delivery settings. Other approaches to quality assessment and quality assurance are described in the final section. The editors hope that the articles in this special issue can assist the profession in achieving greater and more consistent effectiveness with the public it serves. This special issue, entitled "Evidence-Based Parent and Family Interventions in School Psychology," examines the data that support the use of interventions as methods for changing children's school-related behavior and learning problems. Taken together, the articles reflect the work of the Parent and Family Intervention domain of the Evidence-Based Interventions in School Psychology Task Force. Across the articles in this special issue, the categories of coding criteria in the Manual were used to organize the presentation of results. Six review articles on the evidence base for parent and family intervention appear next; these are followed by commentary from distinguished scholars and a brief reflective comment from the special issue editors. Parent intervention is the exclusive focus of the reviews of parent education and parent consultation. Two reviews focus on the home-school relationship including the articles on parent involvement and home-school collaboration. Two reviews include both parent and family treatments: early childhood family-focused interventions and parent training and family systems interventions. Commentary was sought from the current co-chairs of the Task Force, an expert in evidence-based practice in child clinical psychology, a researcher in family-school linkages and parent consultation, and a methodologist. This special issue of the Canadian Journal of Experimental Psychology is entitled "Research on implicit memory in 1996." Today, implicit memory is the focus of memory research. As research on implicit memory is still a very new phenomenon, and the readers of the Canadian Journal of Experimental Psychology come from extremely different mediums of research, the author presents a general introduction to implicit memory and to the eleven articles of this special issue. As you will note, the eleven articles in this issue throw a new and innovating glance on a whole range of empirical or theoretical subjects which treat implicit memory. Introduces this special issue of Psychological Bulletin. When this journal was founded just after the turn of the century, the discipline of psychology was in its infancy. The knowledge base of the emerging discipline was quite limited, and the contributors to it were few. During the past century, research and theory on psychological issues have increased exponentially. This special issue of Psychological Bulletin includes articles on a select number of topics that are of broad interest and importance and that are likely to be viewed as fundamental issues for psychologists in the coming years. In these articles, scholars who are leaders in the field offer their insights into what is known about these topics and what issues are of central importance to address in the future. The articles in this issue offer compelling examples of behavioral research that integrates theory and methods within and outside of psychology. The topics discussed contribute to an understanding of a broad range of basic psychological processes, including issues related to positive adjustment and psychopathology. A number of theories have been proposed to account for the role of motivation in human functioning. Amongst these theories, self-determination theory (e.g., Deci & Ryan, 1985) has been especially influential. Canadian researchers have played a key role in the development of this important theory. The collection of articles in this special issue concern self-determination theory. Following an introductory article by Deci and Ryan, a total of nine articles appear. These articles review research in a variety of contexts on various important themes, such as work, education, relationships, parenting, health, environmental issues, and psychotherapy. Finally, a concluding article provides some reflection on these articles and proposes directions for future research. As such, this special issue celebrates the role that Canadian researchers have played, and continue to play, in testing and refining this major motivation theory. This special issue represents an effort by the journal Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology to emphasize its interdisciplinary mission by encouraging the writing of articles on clinical research and the interchange between basic and clinical research on mental illness and the addictions. This special issue opens with a commentary from A. I. Leshner (2002), retired director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which emphasizes the importance of translating research findings into clinical practice. Four review articles and 12 original research reports provide a broad sampling of contemporary clinical research, including behavioral therapy, pharmacotherapy, psychiatric comorbidity, and special populations, and also illustrate linkages between clinical research and basic fields of inquiry, including behavioral theory, neuropsychology, neuropharmacology, and statistics. The Foreword traces the development of advance directive instruments and discusses their legal enforceability and many benefits. Despite their advantages, advance directives remain underused and are frequently ignored by service providers. The contributors to this special issue discuss why this is so and offer and debate a variety of remedial proposals. They analyze the various legal, clinical, ethical, and practical issues presented by the use of advance directives for health and mental health care and examine new directions in their application. The Foreword describes the organization of this special issue, summarizes the articles it contains, and comments on their significance. This lead article of the special issue discusses conceptual and methodological considerations in studying sexual minority issues, particularly in research conducted by counseling psychologists (including the work represented in this special issue). First, the overarching challenge of conceptualizing and defining sexual minority populations is described. Second, the importance and value of scholarship about sexual minority issues are highlighted. Third, challenges in sexual minority research are outlined, using the articles in this special issue for illustrative purposes, and suggestions are offered for consideration in future research. Finally, the article concludes with a discussion of the ways in which counseling psychologists are uniquely positioned to advance knowledge, practice, and social justice through research on sexual minority issues. From its beginnings in 1981, psychologists have been involved in worldwide efforts to meet the many challenges of the AIDS health crisis. As researchers and practitioners, as consultants and policy advisors, as educators and evaluators, and as activists and concerned members of the community--we psychologists have responded in many ways. We have attempted a broad perspective in approaching this special issue. We wanted coverage of the science, the practice, and the social issues that AIDS has brought into focus for psychology. Any attempt to cover all the issues is doomed to failure, however. The science changes too quickly, and the disease is spreading too rapidly, for any group of journal articles to ever claim currency and comprehensiveness. The issue has been divided into six major sections, each with an introduction. We begin with articles that overview the roles of psychology in the AIDS health crisis as seen in our own profession, and from various levels of science, health care, and legislative and government action. Then we present articles reviewing some of the primary issues AIDS commands us to examine: public health, antibody testing, AIDS and the communities of Black and Hispanic men, IV drug abuse, sexual behavior change, stigma, and psychoneuroimmunology.
