A large part of Social Sciences and the Humanities do not adapt to international proceedings used in English for scientific output on databases such as the Web of Science and Scopus. The aim of this paper is to show the different results obtained in scientific work by comparing Social Sciences researchers with those of other sciences in four Spanish universities. The first finding is that some Social Sciences researchers are somewhat internationalised. However, the majority of individuals who are prestigious in their local academic-scientific community do not even appear on the information sources mentioned above.  相似文献

This brief research note is based on data that were gathered as part of the Human Capital and Mobility project “Postgraduate Education and Training in the European Community,” a research network directed by Robert Burgess of CEDAR—University of Warwick involving eight countries. Impact factors for 20 journals ranked first by Journal Citation Reports (JCR) were compared with the same indicator calculated on the basis of citation data obtained from Scopus database. A significant discrepancy was observed as Scopus, though results differed from title to title, found in general more citations than listed in JCR. This also affected ranking of the journals. More thorough examination of two selected titles proved that the divergence resulted mainly from difference in coverage of two products, although other important factors also play their part.  相似文献

Patterns of migration among disciplines and specialties are examined using data from a large survey of U. S. Ph. D. s in a broad range of fields. Mappings of scholarly fields are derived from the migration patterns and these mappings are largely consistent with results from previous studies using citation flows and other measures of field similarities. Migration patterns suggest that there are two boundaries dividing the fields in this analysis, and that hierarchical relations among disciplines are weak or absent. In this study we propose and evaluate a method to automatically identify the journal publications that are related to a Ph.D. thesis using bibliographical data of both items. We build a manually curated ground truth dataset from German cumulative doctoral theses that explicitly list the included publications, which we match with records in the Scopus database. We then test supervised classification methods on the task of identifying the correct associated publications among high numbers of potential candidates using features of the thesis and publication records. The results indicate that this approach results in good match quality in general and with the best results attained by the “random forest” classification algorithm.

This paper proposes a kernel-based strategy to analyze the distribution of local point clouds and detect 3D lines from dense airborne LIght Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) data. The proposed method, namely topological elevation connection (TEC) analysis, employs geometric criteria with an automatic procedure instead of threshold operation. The focused targets include flat roofs with parapets, step roofs, hipped roofs, and gable roofs. By comparing with reference data, the accuracy between the detected lines and reference data can reach within 0.2?m. Three-dimensional boundaries and structure lines are essential for building modeling and data registration. Many related works have focused on the collection of co-planar LIDAR points to calculate intersection lines with optimized thresholds. In addition, they did not focus on parapets because of the limitations of developed assumptions and the criteria used. It is crucial to analyze the local point distribution for the automation improvement of detection processes. The major objective is to automatically detect 3D lines using the TEC analysis instead of threshold selection. The interesting targets include building boundaries and a variety of rooftops. The core concept of TEC is that the local relief along the alignment must be smoother than the local relief across the alignment. All consecutive point clouds, which belong to one line, must be sufficient for progressive elevations along the alignment and the linear shape. In the validation, the detected results are compared with reference data. The comparisons indicate that the proposed scheme can reach a detection accuracy of 0.2 m and provide a higher degree of modeling automation for varied building types.  相似文献

It is well known that the quality of a doctorate program is related to the level of involvement of its faculty in research. Thus, we worked with the hypothesis that postulates that if the in-house scientific output of the core faculty involved in a Ph.D. program can be appraised in such a manner that the achievements render quantitative and qualitative indicators, it is possible to depict profiles amenable for comparisons. We describe the methodology, that uses performance scientometric indicators, and results obtained after studying five Ph.D. programs in the field of Cell and Molecular Biology/Biochemistry in three different Chilean universities and show that the approach serves to portray the in-house capacity of each programvis a vis national and international standards.  相似文献

The ocean color and temperature scanner (OCTS) collected global ocean color data from November 1996 to June 1997. Analyses of OCTS imagery indicate three features that impair scientific research uses: (1) band misalignments, (2) image striping, and (3) image noise. These are due to (1) band offsets in the sensor design, (2) detector radiometric response variability, and (3) primarily cloud contamination, respectively. Methods are analyzed to ameliorate the effects of each that facilitate use of OCTS ocean color data for quantitative scientific analyses.  相似文献

We assessed the geometric and radiometric performance of the ocean color and temperature scanner (OCTS) using data acquired over the United States. Initial results indicated a geometric offset in the along-track direction of 4-5 pixels that was attributed to a tilt bias. OCTS radiometric data appeared to suffer from near-field and possibly far-field scatter effects. Analysis of radiometric stability was inconclusive because of daily variability and the absence of a full seasonal cycle. Comparison of OCTS-computed water-leaving radiances with colocated in situ measurements showed that the prelaunch calibration required adjustment from -2% to +13%. Minor modification of OCTS data processing based on these results and avoidance of near-field scatter effects can enable improved and more-reliable OCTS data for quantitative scientific analyses.  相似文献

This study examines the relative efficiency of the R&D process across a group of 22 developed and developing countries using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The R&D technical efficiency is examined using a model with patents granted to residents as an output and gross domestic expenditure on R&D and the number of researchers as inputs. Under CRS (Constant Returns to Scale), Japan, the Republic of Korea and China are found to be efficient, whereas under the VRS (Variable Returns to Scale) framework, Japan, the Republic of Korea, China, India, Slovenia and Hungary are found to be efficient. The emergence of some of the developing nations on the efficiency frontier indicates that these nations can also serve as benchmarks for their efficient use of R&D resources. The inefficiency in the R&D resource usage highlighted by this study indicates the underlying potential that can be tapped for the development and growth of nations.  相似文献

Citation analyses were performed for Australian social science journals to determine the differences between data drawn from Web of Science and Scopus. These data were compared with the tier rankings assigned by disciplinary groups to the journals for the purposes of a new research assessment model, Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA), due to be implemented in 2010. In addition, citation-based indicators including an extended journal impact factor, the h-index, and a modified journal diffusion factor, were calculated to assess whether subsequent analyses influence the ranking of journals. The findings suggest that the Scopus database provides higher number of citations for more of the journals. However, there appears to be very little association between the assigned tier ranking of journals and their rank derived from citations data. The implications for Australian social science researchers are discussed in relation to the use of citation analysis in the ERA.  相似文献
