The new year has brought problems for America Online on at least two fronts. First of all a group of teenage hackers were able to breach security on AOL Instant Messenger. Then a lawsuit was filed on behalf of its subscribers, claiming the company’s latest software disables any Internet accounts users have with other companies, making them unusable. The suit cites a federal computer crimes law that is generally used to prosecute hackers. That law provides criminal and civil liability for any persons that interfere with another’s computer.  相似文献

Characterizing user’s intent and behaviour while using a retrieval information tool (e.g. a search engine) is a key question on web research, as it hold the keys to know how the users interact, what they are expecting and how we can provide them information in the most beneficial way. Previous research has focused on identifying the average characteristics of user interactions. This paper proposes a stratified method for analyzing query logs that groups queries and sessions according to their hit frequency and analyzes the characteristics of each group in order to find how representative the average values are. Findings show that behaviours typically associated with the average user do not fit in most of the aforementioned groups.  相似文献

Despite the large variety and wide adoption of different techniques to detect and filter unsolicited messages (spams), the total amount of such messages over the Internet remains very large. Some reports point out that around 80% of all emails are spams. As a consequence, significant amounts of network resources are still wasted as filtering strategies are usually performed only at the email destination server. Moreover, a considerable part of these unsolicited messages is sent by users who are unaware of their spamming activity and may thus inadvertently be classified as spammers. In this case, these oblivious users act as spambots, i.e., members of a spamming botnet. This paper proposes a new method for detecting spammers at the source network, whether they are individual malicious users or oblivious members of a spamming botnet. Our method, called SpaDeS, is based on a supervised classification technique and relies only on network-level metrics, thus not requiring inspection of message content. We evaluate SpaDeS using real datasets collected from a Brazilian broadband ISP. Our results show that our method is quite effective, correctly classifying the vast majority (87%) of the spammers while misclassifying only around 2% of the legitimate users.  相似文献

Should marketers providing e-mail advertising to sellers of weight loss, phone sex, and get-rich-quick-scheme services have a right to send unsolicited e-mail via online services such as AOL? Does the First Amendment of the US Constitution guarantee such access as a form of free speech? Do the antitrust laws prohibit AOL and other servers from denying these marketers access to an essential facility of competition? Cyber Promotions Inc. thinks so, but the federal district court in Philadelphia did not agree. Cyber sends e-mail advertising via the Internet and AOL to AOL subscribers and to subscribers of other services linked to AOL on the Net. During the period from November 4 to November 11, 1996, Cyber sent approximately 2 million unsolicited e-mail messages through AOL to AOL subscribers. AOL tried to block Cyber's e-mail by implementing a program that AOL termed “Preferred Mail The Guard Against Junk E-Mail”. Under this system, AOL subscribers could click on a preference box captioned “I want junk e-mail!” If subscribers clicked on the box, they would get unsolicited advertising, but not otherwise. The author looks at the issues in this case  相似文献

Expanding its determined efforts to bring about a resolution to the spam issue, America Online has filed suit against a company that owns and runs pornographic websites, alleging that it sends junk E-mail to AOL members. AOL’s lawsuit alleges that Cyber Entertainment knows and encourages webmasters to send unsolicited E-mails promoting its sites, despite the company’s no-spam policy. John Bennett and Joseph Elkind, the two owners of the company, along with eight employees and 29 webmasters, were named in the suit.  相似文献

Fred Cohen 《Network Security》2000,2000(11):16-18
Networks dominate today's computing landscape and commercial technical protection is lagging behind attack technology. As a result, protection programme success depends more on prudent management decisions than on the selection of technical safeguards. Managing Network Security takes a management view of protection and seeks to reconcile the need for security with the limitations of technology.  相似文献
