The effects of particle concentration and size on hydrodynamics and mass transport in an air–water slurry bubble column were experimentally studied. When the particle concentration αs increased from 0% to 20%, the averaged gas holdup decreased by ~30%, gas holdup of small bubbles and gas–liquid volumetric mass transfer coefficient decreased by up to 50%, while the gas holdup of large bubbles increased slightly. The overall effect of particle size was insignificant. A liquid turbulence attenuation model which could quantitatively describe the effects of particle concentration and size was first proposed. Semi-empirical correlations were obtained based on extensive experimental data in a wide range of operating conditions and corrected liquid properties. The gas holdup and mass transfer coefficient calculated by the correlations agreed with the experimental data from both two-phase and three-phase bubble columns, with a maximum error <25%.  相似文献

Local time-averaged gas holdup in a 10.2 cm diameter fluidized bed is determined using X-ray computed tomography (CT) over a range of superficial gas velocities (Ug), side air injection flow rates (Qside), and fluidized bed material. Without side air injection, only small variations in the local time-averaged gas holdup are observed for beds composed of glass beads, ground walnut shell, or ground corncob. With the introduction of side air injection, which simulates the immediate volatilization of biomass in a fluidized bed gasifier, a distinctive plume is observed along the reactor wall above the side injection port. The plume gradually expands toward the center of the bed as height increases; the expansion is found to increase with increasing Qside. As Ug increases, fluidization becomes more uniform and the effect of the side air injection on the fluidization hydrodynamics is less pronounced. Additionally, increasing Ug increases overall gas holdup and bed expansion. Of the three bed materials examined, ground corncob fluidization is the least affected by side air injection and shows the highest overall gas holdup while glass bead fluidization is much more affected by side air injection and has the lowest overall gas holdup. This study demonstrates the usefulness of X-ray CT in noninvasively visualizing detailed internal features of fluidized beds. These results will be used in future studies to validate computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models of fluidized beds.  相似文献

A unique characteristic linear dimension (d), defined as the cube root of the specific liquid holdup (hsp) in the packed column, was used to correlate successfully the liquid film mass transfer coefficient kLa for gas absorption-desorption for sparingly soluble gases in liquids below loading. To produce this simple, dimensionless correlation, kLa data reported in literature were used, covering a wide range of physical properties of liquids, packings and operating conditions. This new approach showed operating holdup as an important factor in gas liquid mass transfer.  相似文献

In the literature, very few correlations have been proposed for hold-up prediction in slurry pipelines. However, these correlations fail to predict hold-up over a wide range of conditions. Based on a databank of around 220 measurements collected from the open literature, a correlation for hold-up was derived using artificial neural network (ANN) modeling. The hold-up for slurry was found to be a function of nine parameters such as solids concentration, particle dia, slurry velocity, pressure drop and solid and liquid properties. Statistical analysis showed that the proposed correlation has an average absolute relative error (AARE) of 2.5% and a standard deviation of 3.0%. A comparison with selected correlations in the literature showed that the developed ANN correlation noticeably improved prediction of hold-up over a wide range of operating conditions, physical properties and pipe diameters. This correlation also predicts properly the trend of the effect of the operating and design parameters on hold-up.  相似文献

Experiments were performed to study the hydrodynamics of a cocurrent three‐phase fluidized bed with liquid as continuous phase. Based on the 209 experimental data (with four liquid systems and five different particles) along with 115 literature data from six different sources on minimum fluidization velocity, a unique correlation for the estimation of minimum fluidization velocity in two‐phase (ug = 0) as well as in three‐phase systems is developed. A data bank consisting of 1420 experimental measurements for the fractional gas phase holdup data with a wide range of variables is used for developing empirical correlations. Separate correlations are developed for two flow regimes observed in this present work. The proposed correlations are more accurate and simpler to use. © 2002 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

New robust correlations and mechanistic model of macroscopic fluid dynamic and gas–liquid mass transfer characteristics for randomly packed towers were developed based on first principles, neural network computing and dimensional analysis (artificial neural network and dimensional analysis, ANN–DA). These tools concerned the loading and flooding capacities, the total liquid hold-up, the irrigated pressure drop, the local volumetric liquid-side, kLa, and gas-side, kGa, mass transfer coefficients, the overall volumetric, KLa and KGa, mass transfer coefficients, and the packing fractional wetted area. Validation of these tools was performed by interrogating a broad experimental database including over 10,750 measurements published in the literature over the past seven decades. The fully-predictive mechanistic model proved powerful in forecasting the tower hydraulics below the loading point without requiring any adjustable parameter. On the other hand, the ANN–DA correlations proved highly powerful in correlating the tower fluid dynamics and gas–liquid mass transfer regardless of the operating flow regime. These approaches were also benchmarked with respect to the comprehensive Billet and Schultes (Trans. Industr. Chem. Eng. 77 (1999) 498) phenomenological approach and the classical Onda et al. (J. Chem. Eng. Japan 1 (1968) 56) mass transfer correlations.  相似文献

This paper investigates the effect of sparger geometry on flow regime of a bubble column. The experiments presented in this study were performed under atmospheric pressure with water/air in a cylindrical Plexiglas® column of 33.0 cm i.d. and 3.0 m height. Three different perforated plate spargers were employed. Hole diameter was varied in the range of 1–3 mm, while the free area was 1.0%.The theory of linear stability is used for the prediction of regime transitions in the bubble column and a comparison has been presented between the predictions and the experimental observations. A good agreement between the predictions and the experimental values of transition gas holdup has been obtained. In addition, the data from the literature has been analyzed. Experimental values of transition gas holdups and predictions by the theory of linear stability have been compared with those of literature.A correlation based on dimensionless numbers (Archimedes, Froude, Eötvös and Weber) and the group (do/DC) for the prediction of gas holdup in homogeneous regime is proposed. The average error between the correlation predictions and experimental values remains under ±10%.The proposed correlation is compared with the published data and found to be in fairly good agreement.  相似文献

Based on an extensive experimental database (946 measurements) set up from the literature published over past 30 years, a new correlation relying on artificial neural network (ANN) was proposed to predict the basic pulsation frequency of pulsing flow in the trickle-bed reactors. Seven dimensionless groups employed in the proposed correlation were liquid and gas Reynolds (ReL,ReG), liquid Weber (WeL), gas Froude (FrG), gas Stokes (StG) and liquid Eötvös numbers and a bed correction factor (Sb). The performance comparisons of literature and present correlations showed that ANN correlation is significantly an improvement in predicting pulsation frequency with an AARE of 10% and a standard deviation less than 18%. The effects of the variables including the properties of fluid and bed, and flow rate of liquid and gas on pulsing frequency were investigated by ANN parametric simulations and the trends were compared with exiting experimental results that confirmed the coherence of the proposed method with the previous experiments.  相似文献

A Kenics® KMX static mixer that has curved-open blade internal structure was investigated to study its hydrodynamic performance related to residence time distribution and liquid holdup in a gas/liquid system. The static mixer reactor had 24 mixing elements arranged in line along the length of the reactor such that the angle between two neighboring elements is 90°. The length of the reactor was 0.98 m with an internal diameter of 3.8 cm and was operated cocurrently with vertical upflow. The fluids used were hydrogen (gas phase), monochlorobenzene (liquid phase) and hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber solution (liquid phase). In all the experiments, the polymer solution was maintained as a continuous phase while hydrogen gas was in the dispersed phase. All experiments were conducted in the laminar flow regime with the liquid side hydraulic Reynolds number in the range of 0.04-0.36 and the gas side hydraulic Reynolds number in the range of 3-18. Different polymer concentrations and different operating conditions with respect to gas/liquid flow rates were used to study the corresponding effects on the hydrodynamic parameters such as Peclet number (Pe) and the liquid holdup (εL). Empirical correlations were obtained for the axial dispersion coefficient (Da) and liquid holdup in liquid system alone and for the gas/liquid system separately. It was observed that the Peclet number decreased with the introduction of gas in to the reactor while in the liquid system alone, an increase in viscosity decreased the Peclet number. The liquid holdup was empirically correlated as a function of the physical properties of the fluids used in addition to the operating flow rates.  相似文献

Gas-liquid interphase mass transfer was investigated in a slurry bubble column under CO2 hydrate forming operating conditions. Modeling gas hydrate formation requires knowledge of mass transfer and the hydrodynamics of the system. The pressure was varied from 0.1 to 4 MPa and the temperature from ambient to 277 K while the superficial gas velocity reached 0.20 m/s. Wettable ion-exchange resin particles were used to simulate the CO2 hydrate physical properties affecting the system hydrodynamics. The slurry concentration was varied up to 10%vol. The volumetric mass transfer coefficient (klal) followed the trend in gas holdup which rises with increasing superficial gas velocity and pressure. However, klal and gas holdup both decreased with decreasing temperature, with the former being more sensitive. The effect of solid concentration on klal and gas holdup was insignificant in the experimental range studied. Both hydrodynamic and transport data were compared to best available correlations.  相似文献

Temporal variations of the liquid holdup in a mini-pilot scale trickle bed reactor cold-mockup, induced by an ON-OFF liquid flow modulation strategy of operation, are explored at different axial positions. The reactor is packed with porous beads of γ-Al2O3 and the liquid holdup is approximately estimated with a conductimetric technique, using probes that mimic the packing. The effects of the liquid and gas superficial velocities, the bed depth and the cycling parameters, cycle period and split, on the liquid holdup modulation are examined for a wide range of conditions. For slow and intermediate cycle periods, the liquid holdup time dependence observed during the dry period is represented by an exponential function. The characteristic value of the decay is correlated to the examined variables. The correlation allows reconstruction of the liquid holdup time dependence along the column.  相似文献

Wake volumes in three-phase fluidized beds hae been computed from phase holdup and bubble rising velocity data over a wide range of experimental conditions. The ratio of the wake to gas holdup k? increased with liquid velocity and decreased with gas velocity and surface tension. A correlation relating k? to these variables was derived. Both a stable wake and vortex shedding appeared to contribute to the measured wake volume.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Ejectors have excellent mass transfer characteristics with energy efficiency and can be used in place of conventional countercurrent systems, namely, packed bed contactors as well as venturi scrubbers, cyclones and airlift pumps. Although a number of papers have been published in the recent past, none of them provides a theoretical basis for the prediction of gas phase holdup. In this work an attempt has been made to develop a theoretical basis for predicting gas phase holdup based on first principles using Nguyen and Spedding's distribution function (Co) and initial value parameter (B). RESULTS: In the present work, measurements and correlations are reported for the gas holdup and energy dissipation in a liquid‐gas ejector. The holdup data have been correlated using the theoretical models proposed by Nguyen and Spedding, 26 with an estimated initial value parameter B and the distribution function Co. The throat and diffuser loss coefficients were found to be constant up to a gas/liquid flow ratio of 1.6 and then it was found to be a function of area ratio, physical properties and gas holdup. CONCLUSIONS: The present proposed correlations for gas phase holdup and energy dissipation, Emix, should be useful for the efficient design of co‐current ejectors for gas‐liquid contacting, in particular for the removal of CO2 from natural gas, since the viscosity and surface tension ranges covered in the present study are essentially those encountered in amine–carbon dioxide systems. In the present work, water and three phase compositions of Solka-Floc, a cellulose fiber for simulating the biomass in bacteria, yeast, and fungal fermentation were studied in a 1.4?m3 stirred airlift reactor. The fractional dispersed phase holdup and the overall volumetric mass transfer coefficients were measured. The dispersed phase riser gas holdup and overall volumetric mass transfer coefficients both increased with increasing riser superficial dispersed phase velocity (0.02–0.1?ms?1) and agitator speed in the range of 0–5?rs?1. An increase in the Solka-Floc concentration (1–3% w/v) was found to reduce ?GR and K L a L . Empirical correlations have been developed for fractional dispersed phase gas holdup and overall volumetric mass transfer coefficients.  相似文献

Flow structures were determined in a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) riser (0.203 m i.d.×5.9 m high) of FCC particles (dp=70 μm, ρs=1700 kg/m3). A momentum probe was used to measure radial momentum flux profiles at several levels and to distinguish between upward and downward flow regions. Time-mean dynamic pressure (ΔPm) decreases towards the wall in the range Ug=5-8 m/s, Gs=10-340 kg/m2 s. The thickness of the annular downflow layer based on ΔPm=0 reaches a maximum with increasing height. The annular downflow layer disappears locally with increasing solids mass flux (Gs) at a constant gas velocity, with achievement of the dense suspension upflow (DSU) regime. A new correlation is developed to predict the time-mean thickness of solids down-flowing layer based on solids mass flux and momentum flux. It successfully accounts for the variation of the annular layer thickness with height and Gs, and covers a wide Gs range right up to near the onset of the DSU regime.  相似文献

The average in situ volume fraction of the liquid phase for gas-liquid cocurrent downflow through packed beds is correlated to the input volume fraction of the liquid and the bed geometry. The range of operation is delineated into a high-interaction regime and a low-interaction regime based on the influence of the gas rate on the liquid holdup. Experimental data of the present investigation using air-water and air-CMC solutions, as well as that reported in literature covering a wide range in variables, are considered in the development of correlations for total and dynamic liquid holdup.  相似文献

The contributions of pressure drop due to wall frictional losses to the total gas holdup of two‐phase viscous non‐Newtonian systems were experimentally investigated using a 150 dm3 circulating bubble column. The column had a downcomer‐to‐riser cross‐sectional area ratio of 0.54 and a dispersion height of 2.5 m. Aqueous solutions of xanthan gum and carboxymethyl cellulose were used to simulate a wide range of rheological properties. The average wall shear stress was estimated from Al‐Masry's (1999) correlation for the average wall shear rate in external loop airlift reactors. Pressure drop due to wall shear stress was found significantly contributed by 10–70 % to the total gas holdup. This contribution has always been ignored in the data presented in the literature due to the absence of reliable and simple correlations for the average shear rate and shear stress. Corrections to gas holdup were found necessary for non‐Newtonian solutions with concentrations of ≥ 0.5 wt/wt.‐%.  相似文献

Hydrodynamic and mass transfer characteristics of a gas-liquid stirred tank provided with a radial gas-inducing turbine were studied. The effect of the rotation speed and the liquid submergence on global hydrodynamic and mass transfer parameters such as the critical impeller speed, the induced gas flow rate, the gas holdup, the power consumption and the volumetric gas-liquid mass transfer coefficient were investigated. The experiments are mainly conducted with air-water system. In the case of critical impeller speed determination, two liquid viscosities have been used. The volumetric gas-liquid mass transfer coefficient kLa has been obtained by two different techniques. The gas holdup, the induced gas rate and the volumetric gas-liquid mass transfer coefficient are increasing functions with the rotation speed and decreasing ones with the liquid submergence. The effects of these operating parameters on the measured global parameters have been taken into account by introducing the dimensionless modified Froude number and correlations have been proposed for this type of impeller.  相似文献

Gas holdup in a semi-batch operated slurry (pulp fibre suspension) bubble column was investigated for two pulp types (softwood and hardwood kraft pulps) over a range of suspension mass concentrations (Cm=0–9% by mass) and superficial gas velocities (Ug=0.0027–0.027 m/s). Three techniques were used: height difference between gassed and ungassed operation; pressure difference as a function column height; and electrical resistance tomography (ERT). Depending on the technique used the average, axial and radial holdup profiles could be determined. In the pulp suspensions, the ERT determined gas holdups correlated well with those determined using the differential height method. In water, the ERT determined gas holdups were significantly lower, but the agreement was significantly improved by increasing the background conductivity by adding 1 g/L salt to the water. This, however, reduced the overall gas holdup due to the effect of the electrolyte on bubble coalescence. Other differences between the three measurement techniques were attributed to limitations in the detection methods and the averaging procedures used to compare results. The presence of pulp fibres reduced gas-holdup at all gas flow rates and suspension concentrations studied and is attributed to increased bubble coalescence which increases bubble size and consequently bubble rise velocity through the suspension. Gas holdup (as determined by ERT) increased with column height. The radial gas profiles were non-uniform and more peaked than the corresponding water profiles. At low suspension concentrations this was attributed to asymmetric suspension recirculation within the column. As suspension concentration increased, channels formed in the suspension with the average void fraction leveling off to a plateau.  相似文献
