Many rivers and streams worldwide are impacted by pharmaceuticals originating from sewage. The hyporheic zone underlying streams is often regarded as reactive bioreactor with the potential for eliminating such sewage-born micropollutants. The present study aims at checking the elimination potential and analyzing the coupling of hydrodynamics, biogeochemistry and micropollutant processing. To this end, two sites at the lowland stream Erpe, which receives a high sewage burden, were equipped and sampled with nested piezometers. From temperature depth profiles we determined that at one of the sites infiltration of surface water into the aquifer occurs while exfiltration dominates at the other site. Biogeochemical data reveal intense mineralization processes and strictly anoxic conditions in the streambed sediments at both sites. Concentrations of the pharmaceuticals indomethacin, diclofenac, ibuprofen, bezafibrate, ketoprofen, naproxen and clofibric acid were high in the surface water and also in the subsurface at the infiltrating site. The evaluation of the depth profiles indicates some attenuation but due to varying surface water composition the evaluation of subsurface processes is quite complex. Borate and non-geogenic gadolinium were measured as conservative wastewater indicators. To eliminate the influence of fluctuating sewage proportions in the surface water, micropollutant concentrations are related to these indicators. The indicators can cope with different dilutions of the sewage but not with temporally varying sewage composition.  相似文献

The installation of large wood and sediment berms to narrow the overwide channel of the River Bulbourne, Hertfordshire, aimed to restore geomorphological processes, improve channel habitat diversity and increase the amenity value of the park in which the river is located. The Modular River Survey provides a framework and suite of tools for river managers and volunteers to monitor and assess restoration activities. Applying this technique to the River Bulbourne before and after restoration demonstrated that the works increased physical habitat and vegetation complexity. The restored section was narrowed, substrate composition changed and the range of in‐stream vegetation morphotypes increased. The initial slight improvement in riparian habitat complexity immediately following the restoration is expected to increase further over time as the riparian vegetation develops and the restored section of channel matures. A public perception and recreational use survey reviewed how visitor experience and use of the park changed following restoration.  相似文献

Pesticides and deposited fine sediment have independently been associated with changes in relative abundance and species richness in aquatic ecosystems, but the interplay between these two stressors in agricultural streams is poorly understood. A 28-day experiment in outdoor stream mesocosms examined the effects of four levels each of fine sediment coverage (0, 25, 75, 100%) and glyphosate-based herbicide concentration (0, 50, 200, 370 μg/L) on periphyton communities (algae and bacteria) in a fully factorial, repeated-measures design. Our aims were to determine whether (i) increased levels of sediment and glyphosate had individual and/or additive effects, (ii) increased sediment reduced the toxicity of glyphosate (antagonistic multiple stressor interaction), or (iii) sediment-adsorbed glyphosate prolonged the effects of exposure (synergistic interaction). We also assigned all algal taxa to three ecological guilds (low-profile, high-profile and motile growth forms) and separately determined their responses to the treatments. As individual stressors, sediment addition affected all algal community-level metrics, whereas glyphosate addition only affected algal community evenness. Bacterial taxon richness was unaffected by either stressor. In combination, however, significant overall sediment by glyphosate interactions were detected, demonstrating synergistic (algal evenness, high-profile and motile guilds) or antagonistic effects (low-profile guild). Our experiment underscores the importance of considering both structural and functional indicators, including algal guild representation, when assessing the mechanisms by which periphyton communities respond to multiple stressors.  相似文献

The impacts of climate change on nitrogen (N) in a lowland chalk stream are investigated using a dynamic modelling approach. The INCA-N model is used to simulate transient daily hydrology and water quality in the River Kennet using temperature and precipitation scenarios downscaled from the General Circulation Model (GCM) output for the period 1961-2100. The three GCMs (CGCM2, CSIRO and HadCM3) yield very different river flow regimes with the latter projecting significant periods of drought in the second half of the 21st century. Stream-water N concentrations increase over time as higher temperatures enhance N release from the soil, and lower river flows reduce the dilution capacity of the river. Particular problems are shown to occur following severe droughts when N mineralization is high and the subsequent breaking of the drought releases high nitrate loads into the river system. Possible strategies for reducing climate-driven N loads are explored using INCA-N. The measures include land use change or fertiliser reduction, reduction in atmospheric nitrate and ammonium deposition, and the introduction of water meadows or connected wetlands adjacent to the river. The most effective strategy is to change land use or reduce fertiliser use, followed by water meadow creation, and atmospheric pollution controls. Finally, a combined approach involving all three strategies is investigated and shown to reduce in-stream nitrate concentrations to those pre-1950s even under climate change.  相似文献

A field-scale no-till corn plot (120 m x 90 m) located on a tile drained silt loam soil near Kintore, Ontario was irrigated with 2.5 cm of water over a 3 h period to examine the effects of irrigation on tile sediment transport in a headwater stream. Flow characteristics and the composition, concentration and size distribution of suspended solids were measured at the tile outlet, an upstream reference site and three sites located downstream of the tile drain. Results show that tile sediments at the study site are fine-grained (D50 approximately 5.0 microm) and consist primarily of quartz, anorthite/albite, dolomite and calcite. Sediment concentrations in tile effluent increased from 8 to 57 mg L(-1) after 1.5 h of irrigation and reached a maximum of 72 mg L(-1). The sediment yield from the tile drain for the irrigation event was 4.6 kg ha(-1). An unsteady, mobile boundary flow model (MOBED) was used to predict flow characteristics in the stream. According to the MOBED model, bed shear stress in the stream was approximately 6 N m(-2). This value is significantly greater than the critical shear stress for complete suspension of 1 N m(-2) for tile sediments as determined from laboratory experiments using a rotating circular flume. Grain size distributions of suspended solids in the stream were close to the dispersed size distribution because of the high shear stress in the receiving stream.  相似文献

This article investigates the temporal and spatial controls on sediment-phosphorus (P) dynamics in two contrasting sub-catchments of the River Kennet, England. Suspended sediment (collected under representative flow conditions) and size-fractionated bedload (collected weekly for one year) from the Rivers Lambourn and Enborne was analysed for a range of physico-chemical determinands. Total P concentrations were highest in the most mobile fractions of sediment: suspended sediment, fine silt and clay and organic matter (mean concentrations of 1758, 1548 and 1440 microg P g(-1) dry sediment, respectively). Correlation analysis showed significant relationships between total P and total iron (n= 110), total manganese (n= 110), organic matter (n= 110) and specific surface area (n= 28) in the Lambourn (r2 0.71, 0.68, 0.62 and 0.52, respectively) and between total P and total iron (n= 110), total manganese (n= 110) and organic matter (n= 110) in the Enborne (r2 0.74, 0.85 and 0.68, respectively). These data highlight the importance of metal oxyhydroxide adsorption of P on fine particulates and organic matter. However, high total P concentrations in the granule gravel and coarse sand size fraction during the summer period (mean concentration 228 microg P g(-1) dry sediment) also highlight the role of calcite co-precipitation on P dynamics in the Lambourn. P to cation ratios in Lambourn sediment indicated that fine silt and clay and granule gravel and coarse sand size fractions were potential sources of P release to the water column during specific periods of the summer and autumn. In the Enborne, however, only the granule gravel and coarse sand size fraction had high ratios and a slow, constant release of P was observed. In addition, scanning electron microscopy work confirmed the association of P with calcite in the Lambourn and P with iron on clay particles in the Enborne. The study highlighted the importance of the chemical and physical properties of the sediment in influencing the mechanisms controlling P storage and release within river channels.  相似文献

We review the current status of knowledge regarding the role that flow parameters play in controlling the macrophyte communities of temperate lowland rivers. We consider both direct and indirect effects and the interaction with other factors known to control macrophyte communities. Knowledge gaps are identified and implications for the management of river systems considered.The main factors and processes controlling the status of macrophytes in lowland rivers are velocity (hence also discharge), light, substrate, competition, nutrient status and river management practices. We suggest that whilst the characteristics of any particular macrophyte community reflect the integral effects of a combination of the factors, fundamental importance can be attributed to the role of discharge and velocity in controlling instream macrophyte colonisation, establishment and persistence. Velocity and discharge also appear to control the relative influence of some of the other controlling factors.Despite the apparent importance of velocity in determining the status of macrophyte communities in lowland rivers, relatively little is understood about the nature of the processes controlling this relationship. Quantitative knowledge is particularly lacking. Consequently, the ability to predict macrophyte abundance and distribution in rivers is still limited. This is further complicated by the likely existence of feedback effects between the growth of macrophytes and velocity.Demand for water resources increases the pressure on lowland aquatic ecosystems. Despite growing recognition of the need to allocate water for the needs of instream biota, the inability to assess the flow requirements of macrophyte communities limits the scope to achieve this. This increases the likelihood of overexploitation of the water resource as other users, whose demands are quantifiable, are prioritised.  相似文献

We investigated three small streams in the New Territories of Hong Kong, China. In each stream, we compared the benthic macroinvertebrate fauna of one site immediately upstream of an area of agricultural land (market gardening) with a second site immediately downstream. Each pair of sites was < 300 m apart. Samples were taken at the end of the dry season (March 2000) and again (April 2000) just after heavy rainfall had caused runoff from the fields. The total number of taxa at the downstream sites was the same as that in the upstream sites in March. In April, the total taxon richness was lower at the downstream localities although this difference was statistically significant in only one stream. The acute toxic effect of runoff became clearer when focusing on the group of sensitive benthic fauna. The grouping was done by ranking the relatively physiological tolerance to organotoxins following the relevant literature (Bull. Environ. Contam. Toxicol. 67 (2001) 360). All streams showed a significant downstream decrease in the number of sensitive taxa in April, while in two of three streams the number of relatively tolerant taxa increased. Ordination (by n-MDS) confirmed this pattern. It revealed a marked temporal trend in all streams resulting from a decrease of sensitive taxa downstream that was not apparent at the upstream sites. The size of the observed effects varied among streams, and may have reflected differences in the composition of the agricultural runoff.  相似文献

The water quality of 13 rivers in the lowland, agricultural county of Suffolk is investigated using routine monitoring data for the period 1981 to 2006 collected by the Environment Agency of England and Wales (EA), and its predecessors, with particular emphasis on phosphorus (as total reactive phosphorus, TRP) and total (dissolved and particulate) oxidised nitrogen (TOxN — predominantly nitrate NO3). Major ion and flow data are used to outline fundamental hydrochemical characteristics related to the groundwater provenance of base-flow waters. Relative load contributions from point and diffuse sources are approximated using Load Apportionment Modelling for both TRP and TOxN where concurrent flow and concentration data are available. Analyses indicate a mixture of point and diffuse sources of TRP, with the former being dominant during low flow periods, while for TOxN diffuse sources dominate.Out of 59 sites considered, 53 (90%) were found to have annual average TRP concentrations greater than 0.05 mg P l− 1, and 36 (61%) had average concentrations over 0.120 mg P l− 1, the upper thresholds for ‘High’ and ‘Good’ ecological status, respectively. Correspondingly, for TOxN, most of the rivers are already within 70% of the 11.3 mg N l− 1 threshold, with two rivers (Wang and Ore) being consistently greater than this.It is suggested that the major challenge is to characterise and control point-source TRP inputs which, being predominant during the late spring and summer low-flow period, coincide with the peak of primary biological production, thus presenting the major challenge to achieving ‘good’ ecological status under the Water Framework Directive. Results show that considerable effort is still required to ensure appropriate management and develop tools for decision-support.  相似文献

Current governmental policy in Ireland is encouraging afforestation, 80% of which is likely to consist of exotic conifer species, in low-lying agricultural areas. Whereas most studies of bird diversity in forest/farmland mosaic landscapes have focused on high quality woodland remnants in a hostile agricultural matrix, this study has considered the influence of man-made plantations in a less intensively farmed context. Bird communities of three lowland agricultural landscapes (each 2000 ha in area) with intermediate or low levels of coniferous forest cover (33% or 8% approximately) were sampled in winter and summer. Though total abundance and species richness of birds of farmland habitats in the partially forested and open sites did not differ, the presence of trees in the surrounding landscape did influence abundance of some common species such as Blue Tit Parus caeruleus, Robin Erithacus rubecula and Blackbird Turdus merula. In winter, species composition of farmland habitats with and without hedgerow trees differed between forested and open landscapes. Also, the abundance of certain species varied between farmland adjacent to and remote from forest edges, in both seasons. In these landscapes, coniferous plantations did not greatly affect the mainly generalist farmland bird community, either positively or negatively. However, if the proportion of land-use occupied by forestry were to increase, reducing the available hedgerow habitat and forest edge/area ratio, diversity and abundance of declining farmland bird species might be negatively affected.  相似文献

Traditional Inuit foods are contaminated with chemical residues from industrial and other activities around the world. The intake of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polychlorinated camphenes (PCCs) exceeds the 'tolerable daily intake' (TDI) for many consumers. The implications of long term contaminant intake, even for single contaminants, are not known and will be difficult or impossible to determine in the foreseeable future. Traditional foods form a substantial part of the Inuit diet and are a major source of energy and essential nutrients. Available alternative imported foods are nutritionally inferior and substitution may lead to nutritional deficiencies and associated risks to health and to the social and cultural life of Arctic communities.  相似文献

It has been proposed that the accumulation of PCBs by aquatic organisms is a physicochemical process that is governed by the equilibrium partitioning of PCBs between the organisms and the ambient water. This approach focuses primarily on the hydrophobicity of PCBs, while neglecting the biological impacts of PCB accumulation and possible differences in species-specific response. Furthermore, it does not reflect the complex mechanistic aspects of PCB accumulation. Current modeling, while focusing on accumulation via contaminated food, has been for large lake systems and is not appropriate for lower trophic organism interactions. The objective of this research was to evaluate the ecotoxicological fate of PCBs in a laboratory stream system and to determine if species-specific differences in the accumulation and toxic effects of PCBs existed. Bench scale experiments were conducted to determine kinetic and equilibrium parameters measuring algal uptake of PCB, and these results were used to explain the periphytic response to low level PCB exposure in the laboratory stream system. The results revealed that the accumulation rate, accumulation capacity and toxicity of PCBs differed for the species tested. The observation of PCB fate in the laboratory stream system indicated that PCB volatilization, sediment adsorption and periphyton bioaccumulation were the major pathways of PCB fate. The periphytic biolayer was the significant sink for PCB concentration. The accumulation capacity of periphytic biolayer to PCBs was one order of magnitude greater than that of sediments on a TOC basis. Comparison of the experimental data with model predictions illustrates that equilibrium partitioning models are not very accurate for predicting the accumulation of hydrophobic chemicals by low trophic biota.  相似文献

The depth profiles of the (129)I concentration and the (129)I/(127)I ratio in a surface sediment core from the Kattegat area have been analyzed in order to obtain information about the different sources of (129)I in that core. Therefore, a mathematical model that relates the measured values to the available emission data from the nuclear fuel reprocessing plants and nuclear weapons tests has been applied. Results show that the reprocessing plants at La Hague and Sellafield are the main sources of (129)I in the sediment. Results about the transfer from the release points at the reprocessing plants to the sampling zone agree with other literature data. The model calculates quite fast the sedimentation of (129)I in the sampling place, probably attached to organic matter. Finally, an estimation of approximately 89 kg of (129)I released by Sellafield between 1952 and 1968 has been obtained from the model.  相似文献

The presence of carbamazepine (CBZ), an antiepilectic drug, has been reported in sewage treatment plant (STP) effluents as a result of its low biodegradability. In the present work, the persistence of CBZ in aquatic environment with respect to abiotic transformation processes along with its toxicity and capability of accumulating in single aquatic organisms (algae) are evaluated. The possibility of removing CBZ from STP effluents is studied by characterizing its ozonation process through the assessment of kinetics and the distribution of oxidation products.  相似文献

The Mike 11-TRANS modelling system was applied to the lowland Gjern river basin in Denmark to assess climate-change impacts on hydrology and nitrogen retention processes in watercourses, lakes and riparian wetlands. Nutrient losses from land to surface waters were assessed using statistical models incorporating the effect of changed hydrology. Climate-change was predicted by the ECHAM4/OPYC General Circulation Model (IPCC A2 scenario) dynamically downscaled by the Danish HIRHAM regional climate model (25 km grid) for two time slices: 1961-1990 (control) and 2071-2100 (scenario). HIRHAM predicts an increase in mean annual precipitation of 47 mm (5%) and an increase in mean annual air temperature of 3.2 degrees C (43%). The HIRHAM predictions were used as external forcings to the rainfall-runoff model NAM, which was set up and run for 6 subcatchments within and for the entire, Gjern river basin. Mean annual runoff from the river basin increases 27 mm (7.5%, p<0.05) when comparing the scenario to the control. Larger changes, however, were found regarding the extremes; runoff during the wettest year in the 30-year period increased by 58 mm (12.3%). The seasonal pattern is expected to change with significantly higher runoff during winter. Summer runoff is expected to increase in predominantly groundwater fed streams and decrease in streams with a low base-flow index. The modelled change in the seasonal hydrological pattern is most pronounced in first- or second-order streams draining loamy catchments, which currently have a low base-flow during the summer period. Reductions of 40-70% in summer runoff are predicted for this stream type. A statistical nutrient loss model was developed for simulating the impact of changed hydrology on diffuse nutrient losses (i.e. losses from land to surface waters) and applied to the river basin. The simulated mean annual changes in TN loads in a loamy and a sandy subcatchment were, respectively, +2.3 kg N ha(-1) (8.5%) and +1.6 kg N ha(-1) (6.9%). The rainfall-runoff model and the nutrient loss model were chained with Mike 11-TRANS to simulate the combined effects of climate-change on hydrology, nutrient losses and nitrogen retention processes at the scale of the river basin. The mean annual TN export from the river basin increased from the control to the scenario period by 7.7%. Even though an increase in nitrogen retention in the river system of 4.2% was simulated in the scenario period, an increased in-stream TN export resulted because of the simulated increase in the diffuse TN transfer from the land to the surface-waters.  相似文献

A 3-month investigation has been carried out in a stream environment, on the fluctuation of the level of mercury within the sediment and the Gammarus pulex population. A positive correlation is found between the organic content and the mercury content (μg g−1 dry wt) of the samples. The mean mercury concentration in the organic fraction can be read from the regression line. Of the units: μg g−1 dry wt, μg g−1 ashfree dry wt and μg cm−3, the values expressed g−1 ashfree dry wt are considered to be of greatest validity for comparing different localities, and for establishing the pollution level in a stream sediment. Within the investigation period a very high fluctuation is found in the mercury content of analyzed Gammarus pulex. The phenomenon may be explained through fluctuations in the methylating processes within the sediment. No positive correlation is found between mercury in Gammarus pulex and in sediement taken from identical sample locations.  相似文献

Regional assessment of agricultural impacts on the environment requires systematic integration of a range of data. To overcome various limitations, a synoptic approach would be useful for preliminary assessment of potential impact or for deriving hypothetical relationships at geospatial basis. The objective of this case study was to demonstrate the effect of a synoptic approach using a fine-scale geoinformation system in geospatial assessment of environmental impact, viz., the nationwide impact of nitrogen fertiliser on groundwater quality. All farmlands throughout Japan were expressed as polygons comprising a few hectares, and the system integrated a wide range of basic geospatial datasets including topographic data, soil type, meteorological data, drainage conditions, and detailed land-use conditions. The case study showed that nitrogen load from fertilisers was closely related to nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N) of regional groundwater. A hypothetical regression model was derived from the synoptic data analysis. Results demonstrated the usefulness of comprehensive geospatial platforms for a wide range of agricultural and environmental applications.  相似文献

The average nitrate concentration in the groundwater of the Vitoria-Gasteiz (Basque Country) quaternary aquifer rose from 50 mg NO3-/l during 1986 to over 200 mg/l in 1995, which represents an increase of some 20 mg NO3-/l per year. From 1995 to 2002, the nitrate concentration of the groundwater slightly decreased. Nitrate groundwater pollution during the period 1986-1993 was the result of the abusive use of fertilizers and of the modification in the recharge patterns of the aquifer from surface water sources. From 1993 onwards, apart from a possible rationalization in fertilizer use, the change in the origin of water for irrigation and wetland restoration (water is taken now from artificial pools outside the quaternary aquifer) must be explained in order to account for the observed decrease in nitrate concentration in the groundwater. The water of the aquifer and of the unsaturated zone were studied in two experimental plots (one of them cultivated and the other uncultivated) for 18 months (January 1993-June 1994), during the period of maximum contamination, to evaluate the effect of fertilizers on soil water and on the water in the saturated zone. The soil water was sampled using soil lysimeters at various depths. The volumetric water content of the soil was measured at the same depths using time domain reflectrometry (TDR) probes. Samples of groundwater were taken from a network of wells on the aquifer scale, two located close to the two experimental plots. The temporal evolution of nitrate concentrations in soil solutions depends on the addition of fertilizers and on soil nitrate leaching by rain. During episodes of intense rain (>50 mm in a day), the groundwater deposits are recharged with water coming from the leaching of interstitial soil solutions, causing an increase in the groundwater nitrate concentrations. The mass of nitrate leached from the cultivated zone is five times higher than that of the nitrate leached from the uncultivated zone (1147 kg NO3-/ha in the cultivated sector as against 211 kg NO3-/ha in the uncultivated sector), although part of the nitrate leached into the soil had been previously deposited by the rise of the water table. If we consider that the level of groundwater input is similar in both plots, we may conclude that 964 kg NO3-/ha circulated towards the groundwater in the cultivated zone during the period under study, representing 87% of the nitrate applied to the soil in the form of fertilizer during that period.  相似文献

Stormwater ponds have been widely used to control increased surface runoff resulting from urbanization, and to enhance runoff quality. As receiving waters, they are impacted by intermittent stormwater pollution while also serving as newly created aquatic habitats, which partly offset changes of aquatic ecosystems and their biodiversity by urbanization. Thus, determining ecological risks in stormwater ponds is important for the preservation and rehabilitation of biodiversity in urban areas. Limitations of the conventional toxicity assessment techniques in stormwater ponds have led us to use the sediment quality triad approach with the specific analyses of oligochaetes. The latter analyses build on the earlier work by the Cemagref (Lyon, France) and use the oligochaetes as bioindicators of the sediment quality. This integrative approach was tested at eight sites in the Terraview–Willowfield stormwater facility in Toronto, Ontario, in all four seasons (summer 2008–spring 2009). The facility receives direct runoff from the MacDonald-Cartier freeway with a traffic intensity of 340,000 vehicles/d. Sediment chemistry results indicate that several heavy metals and PAH compounds exceeded the Ontario sediment quality guidelines in the facility. Regardless of the season, laboratory bioassays revealed a strong spatial variation in sediment toxicity along the flow path from the inlet to the outlet, agreeing with decreasing concentrations of contaminants in sediment, especially of heavy metals. However, in situ assessments of the benthic macroinvertebrate community structure and in particular of the oligochaete community revealed an overriding influence of seasonally varying toxicity. This seasonal pattern was described as high toxicity in spring and recovery in fall and corresponded to the influx and flushing-out of road salts and of several heavy metals within the facility.  相似文献

Anaerobic nitrate consumption was accompanied by the accumulation of nitrite in the range of 3-52 micromoll(-1) in laboratory sediment cores continuously perfused with nitrate from below. Highest interstitial nitrite concentrations were observed in organically poor sediment cores with a low extractable protein content. Supplemented with an additional source of fixed nitrogen (ammonium), the nitrate-perfused sediments exhibited considerably lower nitrite concentrations than the respective control treatments. The simultaneous addition of ammonium and chloramphenicol, however, resulted in high nitrite concentrations. This suggests that in the absence of chloramphenicol an ammonium-fuelled bacterial protein de novo synthesis prevented the accumulation of nitrite in the course of anaerobic nitrate consumption. Additional DOC (glucose, methanol) generally increased the anaerobic nitrate consumption rate and the interstitial nitrite concentrations.
