Controlling sandwich‐structure of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) microcellular foams using coupling of CO2 diffusion and CO2‐induced crystallization is presented in this article. The intrinsic kinetics of CO2‐induced crystallization of amorphous PET at 25°C and different CO2 pressures were detected using in situ high‐pressure Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and correlated by Avrami equation. Sorption of CO2 in PET was measured using magnetic suspension balance and the diffusivity determined by Fick's second law. A model coupling CO2 diffusion in and CO2‐induced crystallization of PET was proposed to calculate the CO2 concentration as well as crystallinity distributions in PET sheet at different saturation times. It was revealed that a sandwich crystallization structure could be built in PET sheet, based on which a solid‐state foaming process was used to manipulate the sandwich‐structure of PET microcellular foams with two microcellular or even ultra‐microcellular foamed crystalline layers outside and a microcellular foamed amorphous layer inside. © 2011 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 58: 2512–2523, 2012  相似文献

Summary: Via a batch process in an autoclave, foam processing of intercalated PC/clay nanocomposites, having different amounts of clay, has been conducted using supercritical CO2 as a foaming agent. The cellular structures obtained from various foaming temperature‐CO2 pressure ranges were investigated by SEM. The incorporation with nanoclay‐induced heterogeneous nucleation occurs because of a lower activation energy barrier compared with homogeneous nucleation as revealed by the characterization of the interfacial tension between bubble and matrix. The controlled structure of the PCCN foams changed from microcellular (d ? 20 µm and Nc ? 1.0 × 109 cells · cm?3) to nanocellular (d ? 600 nm and Nc ? 3.0 × 1013 cells · cm?3). The mechanical properties of PCCN foams under compression test were discussed.

Synthesis and properties of urethane elastomer-modified epoxy resins were studied. The urethane elastomer-modified epoxy resins were synthesized by the reaction of a 4-cresol type epoxy compound having hydroxymethyl groups (EPCDA) with isocyanate prepolymer. The structure was identified by IR, 1H NMR and GPC. These epoxy resins (EPCDATDI) were mixed with a commercial epoxy resin (DGEBA) in various ratios. The mixed epoxy resins were cured with a mixture of 4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane and 3-phenylenediamine (molar ratio 6:4) as a hardener. The curing behaviour of these epoxy resins was studied by DSC. The higher the concentration of EPCDATDI, the higher the onset temperature and the smaller the rate constant (k) of the exothermic cure reaction were. It was considered that the ratio of hydroxymethyl group to epoxide group was very small and the molecular weight of EPCDATDI was large. Therefore, the accelerating effect of the hydroxymethyl group on the epoxide–amine reaction was cancelled by the retardant effect of increased molecular weight and viscosity, and decreased molecular motion. Toughness was estimated by Izod impact strength and fracture toughness (K1C). On addition of 10 wt% EPCDATDI with low molecular weight (M?n 6710, estimated by GPC using polystyrene standard samples), Izod impact strength and K1C increased by 70% and 60%, respectively, compared with unmodified epoxy resin. Glass transition temperatures (Tg) for the cured epoxy resins mixed with EPCDATDI measured by dynamic mechanical spectrometry were the same as those of unmodified epoxy resin. The storage modulus (E′) at room temperature decreased with increasing concentration of EPCDATDI. Toughness and dynamic mechnical behaviour of cured epoxy resin systems were studied based on the morphology.  相似文献

In CO2-assisted polyurethane (PU) foaming, the solubility and diffusion coefficient of CO2 is vitally important to the cell nucleation and growth. This work is aimed at the effect of molecular weights (M n) and crosslinking densities (V e) on the solubility and diffusion coefficient of CO2 in PU oligomers. A series of PU oligomers with different M n and V e were synthesized. The solubility and diffusivity of CO2 in PU oligomers were measured experimentally in the temperature from 80 to 140 °C and with pressures up to 15 MPa. It was shown that the solubility and diffusion coefficients of CO2 was decreased 20.5 and 21.0%, respectively, with the M n increasing from 5864 to 153,754 g mol−1 at 80 °C, 15 MPa. The solubility and the diffusion coefficient also decreased 11.1 and 38.0% as the V e was increased from 64 to 1493 mol m−3. Furthermore, the diffusion mechanism of CO2 in PU oligomers was explored via molecular dynamics simulations. The results indicated that the calculated diffusivity of CO2 showed the same changing trend as the experimental values, and the smaller M n or crosslinking degree contributed to an increase in fractional free volume and stronger polymer–CO2 interactions. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ether sulfone imide)s (PEI) with molecular weight Mn ∼ 104 were synthesized from 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride and amine terminated poly(ether sulfone) having molecular weights ranging from Mn ∼ 400 to Mn ∼ 4000. Thus, the PEIs had the same molecular weight but various imide and ether sulfone contents. The PEIs were mixed with a stoichiometric mixture of diglycidyl ether bis-phenol-A (DGEBA)/diamino diphenyl sulfone (DDS). The effect of PEI on the curing reaction of DGEBA/DDS and the morphology of the polymer blend were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and optical microscopy. In the DGEBA/DDS/PEI blend with a fixed PEI molecular weight and PEI concentration but with various imide content, the experimental data revealed the PEI with a higher content of ether sulfone had a lower Tg and a better compatibility with solvents and epoxy resins; the curing reaction rate of DGEBA/DDS/PEI was faster for PEI with a higher imide content; the DSC data of cured DGEBA/DDS/PEI showed two Tgs, indicating phase separation between PEI and cured epoxy resins; and the data of optical microscopy showed that the compatibility of PEI with epoxy resins increased with the content of ether sulfone in PEI. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The morphology–toughness relationship of vinyl ester resins was studied as a function of their modification. Bisphenol A based and novolac‐based vinyl ester resins were modified by a star‐shaped polyether polymer with vinyl and hydroxyl functionalities and/or by a polyisocyanate. The polyisocyanate‐containing systems were termed vinyl ester/urethane hybrids. The morphology of the crosslinked resins was studied with dynamic mechanical thermal analysis and atomic force microscopy with ion‐eroded specimens and discussed. The toughness of the crosslinked resins was assessed by the linear elastic fracture mechanics with compact tension specimens. The fracture toughness and energy changed fairly linearly as functions of Mc and Mc0.5, respectively, where Mc is the mean molecular mass between crosslinks. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cobalt acrylate (CoA2) has been treated with bisphenol‐A and epichlorohydrin to modify epoxy resins. It was cured with p‐acetylbenzilidene triphenyl arsonium ylide. The properties such as epoxide equivalent weight (equiv/100 g), molecular weight, hydrolyzable chlorine content increases whereas hydroxyl content, refractive index decreases in the presence of CoA2. The cured epoxy resins shows improve electrical conductivity due to the incorporation of CoA2 with epoxy resins. The influence of complex formation of CoA2 with either linkage of epoxy resins were investigated by spectroscopy. The decrease in Tg from differential scanning calorimetry support the improve in flexibility. The dispersion of cobalt in epoxy resins matrix was confirmed by scanning electron microscope. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

Low‐molecular‐weight poly(2,6‐dimethyl‐1,4‐phenylene oxide) (PPO) with unimodal polydispersity was synthesized by oxidative polymerization of 2,6‐dimethylphenol in the presence of Cu‐ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid catalyst in water. A series of low‐molecular‐weight PPO oligomers with Mn ranged from 360 to 3500 were obtained. It was found that the molecular weight and polydispersity were affected by reaction time, reaction temperature, and catalyst concentration. Based on the detector response‐elution volume curve and the molecular weight from gel permeation chromatography, a possible molecular weight growth mechanism was proposed. The structure and properties of low‐molecular‐weight PPO oligomers were characterized by atomic absorption spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, Ubbelohde viscometer, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Compared to the commercial low‐molecular‐weight PPO, PPO oligomers synthesized in water had a much lower residual copper content. The relationships between Tg and Mn at relatively low‐molecular weight are in good agreement with the equation proposed by Fox and Loshack. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. The cell nucleation and real‐time cell growth with increasing cell growth time in microcellular foaming were investigated by means of temperature quenching in a supercritical CO2 pressure‐quench process. Samples of uniform size and shape were saturated in a vessel under conditions of 100–180°C and 30 MPa, and then depressurized to the atmosphere in 10 s. After depressurization, these samples were removed from the vessel at prescribed intervals, and immediately immersed in an ice‐water slurry to obtain foamed samples with various cell growth times. It was found that the nucleation density is closely correlated to the gas absorption capacity of the polymer matrix, so that the final cell density should not be adopted as the nucleation density, as done commonly. The change of cell structure and mass density with increasing cell growth time was dominated by gas diffusion behavior, which was strongly influenced by the temperature. The final cell structure was mainly determined by the cell growth step, where gas diffusion played a key role. The final cell density was in direct proportion to the gas remaining in the substrate, which ranged from 6.0 × 109 to 4.7 × 106 cells/cm3. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work describes the synthesis of various phenoxy resins by in situ fusion reaction of aromatic dihydroxyl and low molecular weight liquid diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) with an aryl phosphonium salt catalyst. FTIR and 1H-NMR spectra and GPC analyses were performed to characterize the resins. Analyses results indicated that resins have an adequate high molecular weight and physical properties when the reaction occurred after 5–10 min at 225–230°C. In addition, DSC and TGA analyses were performed to investigate the thermal properties of these phenoxy resins. According to these results, the lack of steric hindrance of the molecular structure in these phenoxy resins depressed the changes of Tg and weight loss. A series of phenoxy modified epoxy networks containing narrower polydisperity and higher Mn will exhibit the most significant effect on impact toughness. Moreover, the FTIR spectrum of the phenoxy resin as a function of temperature correlates well with the glass transition temperature. Furthermore, results presented herein demonstrate effective miscibility with thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer (TPU). © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 73: 2369–2376, 1999  相似文献

In this study, we explore the use of solid‐state nucleation in polymer pellets as a means to create microcellular PLA foams in extrusion. This is achieved by using gas‐saturated PLA pellets as input to the extruder. Foam density, bubble size, and bubble density is reported and compared with microcellular foams created in the gas‐injection extrusion process. PLA pellet gas concentrations between 17 and 29 mg CO2/g PLA was found to produce quality microcellular foams in this process. Gas concentrations within this range were achieved by varying methods that included partial saturation, desorption from full saturation, and blending saturated with unsaturated pellets. This gas concentration window that produced microcellular foams was found to be independent of the saturation and desorption process used to achieve the desired concentration. We further compare the pressure drop and pressure drop rate of the gas‐saturated pellet extrusion process showing that similar foams can be produced at pressures orders of magnitude lower than the alternative gas‐injection extrusion processes. Investigations into extrusion pressures support the hypothesis that the gas‐saturated pellet extrusion process utilizes solid‐state nucleation in the feed section of the extruder to achieve high bubble density foams. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Supercritical CO2 as a blowing agent has attracted increasing interest in the preparation of microcellular polyamide 6 (PA6) foams. In this work, we developed the supercritical CO2-assisted method to prepare a series of different microcellular PA6 foams by controlling its crystallization properties in two steps and carefully investigated the corresponding crystallization properties of modified PA6 and foams using various techniques. Initially, a multifunctional epoxy-based chain extender (CE) was used to produce high-melt strength-modified PA6 with improved foaming ability; then, the resulting PA6 was foamed to prepare the microcellular foams of PA6 using supercritical CO2 as a blowing agent in a batch foaming route. The CE effectively enhanced the melt strength of PA6, and CE usage was optimized to obtain a threshold of high branching without crosslinking. The number of crystals was also adjusted by the saturation temperature. Furthermore, these crystals that formed during the saturation process served as high-efficiency bubble nucleating agents and then limited the growth of bubbles at the same time. The microcellular foams of PA6 were successfully obtained with a cell size of 10.0 μm, and cell density of 2.0 × 109 cells/cm3 at the saturation temperature of 225°C.  相似文献

A continuous extrusion process for the manufacture of low-density microcellular polymers is presented. Microcellular polymers are foamed plastics characterized by a cell density greater than 109 cells/cm3 and a fully grown cell size on the order of 10 μm. Previous research on continuous processing of microcellular polymers has focused on control of microcell nucleation in extrusion. This paper presents an effective means for control of cell growth to achieve a desired expansion ratio with CO2 as a blowing agent in microcellular foam processing. Also, a strategy to prevent deterioration of the cell-population density via cell coalescence during expansion is presented. Promotion of a desired volume expansion ratio and prevention of cell coalescence in microcellular foam processing were experimentally verified. By tailoring the extrusion processing parameters, microcellular HIPS foams with a cell density of 1010 cells/cm3 and a controlled expansion ratio in the range of 1.5 to 23 were obtained.  相似文献

Epoxy resins are among the most versatile engineering structural materials. A wide variety of epoxy resins are commercially available, but most are brittle. Several approaches have been used to improve the toughness of epoxy resins, including the addition of fillers, rubber particles, thermoplastics, and their hybrids, as well as interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) of acrylic, polyurethane, and flexibilizers such as polyols. This last approach has not received much attention; none of them have been able to suitably increase resin toughness with out sacrificing tensile properties. Therefore, in an attempt to fill this gap, we experimented with newly synthesized hydroxy‐terminated silicon‐modified polyurethane (SiMPU) oligomers as toughening agents for epoxy resins. SiMPU oligomers were synthesized from dimethyl dichlorosilane, poly(ethylene glycol) (weight‐average molecular weight ~ 200), and toluene 2,4‐diisocyanate and characterized with IR, 1H‐NMR and 13C‐NMR, and gel permeation chromatography. The synthesized SiMPU oligomers, with different concentrations, formed IPNs within the epoxy resins (diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A). The resultant IPN products were cured with diaminodiphenyl sulfone, diaminodiphenyl ether, and a Ciba–Geigy hardener under various curing conditions. Various mechanical properties, including the lap‐shear, peel, and impact strength, were evaluated. The results showed that 15 phr SiMPU led to better impact strength of epoxy resins than the others without the deterioration of the tensile properties. The impact strength increased continuously and reached a maximum value (five times greater than that of the virgin resin) at a critical modifier concentration (20 phr). The critical stress intensity factor reached 3.0 MPa m1/2 (it was only 0.95 MPa m1/2 for the virgin resin). © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 90: 1497–1506, 2003  相似文献

Time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF‐SIMS) was used to investigate correlations between the molecular changes and postcuring reaction on the surface of a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A and diglycidyl ether of bisphenol F based epoxy resin cured with two different amine‐based hardeners. The aim of this work was to present a proof of concept that ToF‐SIMS has the ability to provide information regarding the reaction steps, path, and mechanism for organic reactions in general and for epoxy resin curing and postcuring reactions in particular. Contact‐angle measurements were taken for the cured and postcured epoxy resins to correlate changes in the surface energy with the molecular structure of the surface. Principal components analysis (PCA) of the ToF‐SIMS positive spectra explained the variance in the molecular information, which was related to the resin curing and postcuring reactions with different hardeners and to the surface energy values. The first principal component captured information related to the chemical phenomena of the curing reaction path, branching, and network density based on changes in the relative ion density of the aliphatic hydrocarbon and the C7H7O+ positive ions. The second principal component captured information related to the difference in the surface energy, which was correlated to the difference in the relative intensity of the CxHyNz+ ions of the samples. PCA of the negative spectra provided insight into the extent of consumption of the hardener molecules in the curing and postcuring reactions of both systems based on the relative ion intensity of the nitrogen‐containing negative ions and showed molecular correlations with the sample surface energy. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. N‐Phenylmaleimide–N‐(p‐hydroxy)phenylmaleimide–styrene terpolymer (HPMS), carrying reactive p‐hydroxyphenyl groups, was prepared and used to improve the toughness of cyanate ester resins. Hybrid modifiers composed of N‐phenylmaleimide–styrene copolymer (PMS) and HPMS were also examined for further improvement in toughness. Balanced properties of the modified resins were obtained by using the hybrid modifiers. The morphology of the modified resins depends on HPMS structure, molecular weight and content, and hybrid modifier compositions. The most effective modification of the cyanate ester resin was attained because of the co‐continuous phase structure of the modified resin. Inclusion of the modifier composed of 10 wt% PMS (Mw 136 000 g mol?1) and 2.5 wt% HPMS (hydroxyphenyl unit 3 mol%, Mw 15 500 g mol?1) led to 135% increase in the fracture toughness (KIC) for the modified resin with a slight loss of flexural strength and retention of flexural modulus and glass transition temperature, compared with the values for the unmodified resin. Furthermore, the effect of the curing conditions on the mechanical and thermal properties of the modified resins was examined. The toughening mechanism is discussed in terms of the morphological and dynamic viscoelastic behaviour of the modified cyanate ester resin system. © 2001 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Microcellular foaming of poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS) and its glass–fiber (GF) reinforced composites using supercritical CO2 as a blowing agent presents a promising approach to produce novel cellular materials with tailored microstructures. This study investigated the effects of the material composition and process conditions on the foaming behaviors and final morphologies of the microcellular foamed PPS and PPS/GF composites. The rheological and thermal properties as well as the saturation and desorption behaviors of CO2 in the pure PPS and PPS/GF composites were also detailedly discussed. The results show that microcellular foams with various relative densities, cell sizes, cell‐size distributions, and cell densities can be attained by tailoring the fiber content and key process parameters. At low foaming temperatures below the cold crystallization temperature, the microcellular foamed PPS and PPS/GF composites both present a unimodal cell‐size distribution. At elevated temperatures, the generated crystalline superstructures including spherulites in the polymer matrix and transcrystals around the GF will cause a secondary heterogeneous cell nucleation. This leads to the observations of bimodal and trimodal cell‐size distributions in the pure PPS and the PPS/GF composites, respectively. The mechanisms for the solid‐state foaming behaviors of pure PPS and PPS/GF composites have been illustrated by establishing theoretical models. POLYM. A family of hydrophilic and flexible epoxy polymers was prepared from the reaction of poly(oxyalkylene)amines and diglycidyl ether of bisphenol‐A (DGEBA) at 1:1 molar ratio of N H to epoxide. The use of a high molecular weight (MW = 1000–6000) poly(oxyethylene–oxypropylene)amine and a low MW amine as curing agents provided epoxy materials with good properties in toughness and hydrophilicity. The hydrophilicity, probed by surface resistivity of these cured materials, was found to be affected by the nature and weight content of poly(oxyethylene) segment in the polymer backbone, and also by the degree of crystallinity. Specifically, in the presence of a water‐soluble poly(oxyethylene–oxypropylene)diamine of MW 2000 the cured epoxies can reach surface resistivity as low as 108.6–9.6 Ω/□. In comparison, the water‐insoluble poly(oxypropylene)diamine of MW 2000 afforded a higher surface resistivity of 1010.5 Ω/□ because of the difference in hydrophilicity between oxyethylene and oxypropylene functionalities. Poly(oxypropylene)diamine of MW 230 as the sole curing agent generated an epoxy with even higher surface resistivity of 1013 Ω/□ due to a highly crosslinking structure. With proper selection of mixed poly(oxyethylene–oxypropylene)diamine (25 wt%) and 2‐aminoethanol (9 wt%), the DGEBA cured polymer had an appropriate surface resistivity of 109.8 Ω/□ for antistatics. Moreover, this material was extremely ductile in appearance and showed over 500 % elongation at break during mechanical tests. The high flexibility is rationalized by the balanced chemical structure of poly(oxyalkylene) segments and bisphenol‐A distributed in a slightly crosslinked system. © 2000 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Crystallinity is a controlling parameter in the development of microcellular foam final structure. In this research, using a well-controlled continuous microcellular foamed sheet production system, the effect of crystallinity on the final structure of the microcellular foam is studied. To produce microcellular foamed sheets, different levels of the supercritical carbon dioxide (ScCO2) is dissolved in the polymer at high pressure and the foamed material is stabilized using a four roll apparatus at different roll temperatures. Crystallization occur by delay, however this lag time can be controlled by controlling temperature gradient. The higher decrease in the roll temperature results in higher temperature gradient which increases the crystallization rate during the cell growth, causing bimodal cell structures which indicates secondary nucleation. Moreover, as the amount of gas increases, the cell formation time increases, hence, at even higher temperatures we observed the effect of secondary nucleation, resulting in the occurrence of bimodal cell structures.  相似文献

Dual functional epoxy resins were synthesized by solution polycondensation of 2,6‐bis(4‐hydroxy‐3‐methoxy benzylidene)cyclohexanone and 2,5‐bis(4‐hydroxy‐3‐methoxy benzylidene)cyclopentanone with epichlorohydrin. The synthesized epoxy resins were characterized systematically for their structure by UV, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), 1H NMR, and 13C NMR spectroscopic techniques. Thermal characterization of synthesized epoxy resins was carried out by thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) under nitrogen atmosphere. The self extinguishing property of synthesized oligomers was studied by determining limiting oxygen index (LOI) values using Van Krevelen's equation. X‐ray analysis showed that the epoxy resins containing cyclopentanone have higher degree of crystallinity. The photoreactive property of the synthesized epoxy resins in solution and film states was investigated by UV–Vis spectroscopy. The photocross‐linking proceeds through the dimerization of olefinic chromophore present in the main chain of the oligomer via 2π + 2π cycloaddition reaction. The influence of photoacid generator on the rate of photocross‐linking of epoxy resin was studied by FTIR. UV irradiation of the epoxy resin in presence of photoacid generator produces aromatic sulfonium cation radicals and aromatic radicals which initiate the cationic ring‐opening polymerization of oxirane ring. The photoreactivity studies of the oligomers by FTIR and DSC indicated the presence of dual functionality in the synthesized epoxy resins. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
